Jordan relies heavily on expensive and unreliable imported oil. Therefore, this study was initiated to investigate the potential of ethyl ester used as vegetable oil (VO; biodiesel) to substitute oil-based diesel fuel. The fuels tested were several ester/diesel blends including 100% ester in addition to diesel fuel, which served as the baseline fuel. Variable-speed tests were run on all fuels on a standard test rig of a single-cylinder, direct-injection diesel engine. Tests were conducted to compare these blends with the baseline local diesel fuel in terms of engine performance and exhaust emissions. The results indicated that the blends burned more efficiently with less specific fuel consumption, and therefore, resulted in higher engine thermal efficiency. Furthermore, the blends produced less carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons than diesel fuel. The 100% ester fuel and the blend of 75:25 ester/diesel gave the best performance while the 50:50 blend consistently resulted in the lowest amounts of emissions over the whole speed range tested.  相似文献

In the present work, the effect of using neat orange oil, optimum orange oil-diesel blend and the optimum flow rate of DEE with orange oil are evaluated for the performance, emissions and combustion characteristics of a single cylinder, diesel engine. The experimental results show that carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC) and smoke emissions decrease while oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions increase for orange oil and its blends compared to diesel fuel and DEE with orange oil. The brake thermal efficiency in the case of DEE with orange oil is higher than that of orange oil, orange oil-diesel fuel blend and diesel fuel. The peak cylinder pressure and heat release rate for DEE with orange oil are higher than those of diesel fuel operation.  相似文献

An alternative fuel production was performed by pyrolysis of waste vehicle tires under nitrogen (N2) environment and with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) as catalyst. The sulfur content of liquids obtained were reduced by using Ca(OH)2. The liquid fuel of waste vehicle tires(TF) was then used in a diesel engine to blend with petroleum diesel fuel by 5%(TF5), 10%(TF10), 15%(TF15), 25%(TF25), 35%(TF35), 50%(TF50), and 75%(TF75) wt. and pure (TF100). Performance characteristics such as engine power, engine torque, brake specific fuel consumption (bsfc) and exhaust temperature and emission parameters such as oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon monoxides (CO), total unburned hydrocarbon (HC), sulfur dioxides (SO2) and smoke opacity of the engine operation with TF and blend fuels of TF-diesel were experimentally investigated and compared with those of petroleum diesel fuel. It was concluded that the blends of pyrolysis oil of waste tires TF5, TF10, TF25 and TF35 can efficiently be used in diesel engines without any engine modifications. However, the blends of TF50, TF75 and TF100 resulted considerably to high CO, HC, SO2 and smoke emissions.  相似文献

The effects of using blends of methyl and isopropyl esters of soybean oil with No. 2 diesel fuel were studied at several steady-state operating conditions in a four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. Fuel blends that contained 20, 50, and 70% methyl soyate and 20 and 50% isopropyl soyate were tested. Fuel properties, such as cetane number, also were investigated. Both methyl and isopropyl esters provided significant reductions in particulate emissions compared with No. 2 diesel fuel. A blend of 50% methyl ester and 50% No. 2 diesel fuel provided a reduction of 37% in the carbon portion of the particulates and 25% in the total particulates. The 50% blend of isopropyl ester and 50% No. 2 diesel fuel gave a 55% reduction in carbon and a 28% reduction in total particulate emissions. Emissions of carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons also were reduced significantly. Oxides of nitrogen increased by 12%.  相似文献

Safflower seed oil was chemically treated by the transesterification reaction in methyl alcohol environment with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to produce biodiesel. The produced biodiesel was blended with diesel fuel by 5% (B5), 20% (B20) and 50% (B50) volumetrically. Some of important physical and chemical fuel properties of blend fuels, pure biodiesel and diesel fuel were determined. Performance and emission tests were carried out on a single cylinder diesel engine to compare biodiesel blends with petroleum diesel fuel. Average performance reductions were found as 2.2%, 6.3% and 11.2% for B5, B20 and B50 fuels, respectively, in comparison to diesel fuel. These reductions are low and can be compensated by a slight increase in brake specific fuel consumption (Bsfc). For blends, Bsfcs were increased by 2.8%, 3.9% and 7.8% as average for B5, B20 and B50, respectively. Considerable reductions were recorded in PM and smoke emissions with the use of biodiesel. CO emissions also decreased for biodiesel blends while NOx and HC emissions increased. But the increases in HC emissions can be neglected as they have very low amounts for all test fuels. It can be concluded that the use of safflower oil biodiesel has beneficial effects both in terms of emission reductions and alternative petroleum diesel fuel.  相似文献

The performance and emissions of an indirect injection (IDI)-turbo automobile diesel engine operated with diesel and blends of degummed-deacidified mixed crude palm oil in diesel at portions of 20, 30, and 40 vol.% are examined and compared at various loads and speeds. Although fuel properties of the tested blends do not exactly meet all regulations of Thailand, they are all able to operate the engine. Comparing this with diesel, especially at full loads, shows that all blends produce the same maximum brake torque and power. A higher blending portion results in a little higher brake specific fuel consumption (+4.3% to +7.6%), a slightly lower brake thermal efficiency (-3.0% to -5.2%), a slightly lower exhaust gas temperature (−2.7% to −3.4%), and a significantly lower amount of black smoke (−30% to −45%). The level of carbon monoxide from the 20 vol.% blend is significantly lower (−70%), and the levels of nitrogen oxides from all blends are little higher.  相似文献

Karanja (Pongamia pinnata) oil, a non-edible high viscosity (27.84 cSt at 40 °C) straight vegetable oil, was blended with conventional diesel in various proportions to evaluate the performance and emission characteristics of a single cylinder direct injection constant speed diesel engine. Diesel and karanja oil fuel blends (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) were used to conduct short-term engine performance and emission tests at varying loads (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%). Tests were carried out over the entire range of engine operation and engine performance parameters such as fuel consumption, thermal efficiency, exhaust gas temperature, and exhaust emissions (smoke, CO, CO2, HC, NOx, and O2) were recorded. The brake specific energy consumption (BSEC), brake thermal efficiency (BTE), and exhaust emissions were evaluated to determine the optimum fuel blend. Higher BSEC was observed at full load for neat petro-diesel. A fuel blend of 10% karanja oil (KVO10) showed higher BTE at a 60% load. Similarly, the overall emission characteristics were found to be best for the case of KVO10 over the entire range of engine operation.  相似文献

Oleander oil has been used as raw material for producing biodiesel using ultrasonic irradiation method at the frequency of 20 kHz and horn type reactor 50 watt. A two-step transesterification process was carried out for optimum condition of 0.45 v/v methanol to oil ratio, 1.2% v/v H2SO4 catalyst, 45 °C reaction temperature and 15min reaction time, followed by treatment with 0.25 v/v methanol to oil ratio, 0.75% w/v KOH alkaline catalyst, 50 °C reaction temperature and 15 min reaction time. The fuel properties of Oleander biodiesel so obtained confirmed the requirements of both the standards ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 for biodiesel. Further Oleander biodiesel-diesel blends were tested to evaluate the engine performance and emission characteristics. The performance and emission of 20% Oleander biodiesel blend (B20) gave a satisfactory result in diesel engines as the brake thermal efficiency increased 2.06% and CO and UHC emissions decreased 41.4% and 32.3% respectively, compared to mineral diesel. Comparative investigation of performance and emissions characteristics of Oleander biodiesel blends and mineral diesel showed that oleander seed is a potential source of biodiesel and blends up to 20% can be used for realizing better performance from an unmodified diesel engine.  相似文献

Soapnut (Sapindus mukorossi) oil, a nonedible straight vegetable oil was blended with petroleum diesel in various proportions to evaluate the performance and emission characteristics of a single cylinder direct injection constant speed diesel engine. Diesel and soapnut oil (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) fuel blends were used to conduct short-term engine performance and emission tests at varying loads in terms of 25% load increments from no load to full loads. Tests were carried out for engine operation and engine performance parameters such as fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency, and exhaust emissions (smoke, CO, UBHC, NOx, and O2) were recorded. Among the blends SNO 10 has shown a better performance with respect to BTE and BSEC. All blends have shown higher HC emissions after about 75% load. SNO 10 and SNO 20 showed lower CO emissions at full load. NOx emission for all blends was lower and SNO 40 blend achieved a 35% reduction in NOx emission. SNO 10% has an overall better performance with regards to both engine performance and emission characteristics.  相似文献

Non-edible jatropha (Jatropha curcas), karanja (Pongamia pinnata) and polanga (Calophyllum inophyllum) oil based methyl esters were produced and blended with conventional diesel having sulphur content less than 10 mg/kg. Ten fuel blends (Diesel, B20, B50 and B100) were tested for their use as substitute fuel for a water-cooled three cylinder tractor engine. Test data were generated under full/part throttle position for different engine speeds (1200, 1800 and 2200 rev/min). Change in exhaust emissions (Smoke, CO, HC, NOx, and PM) were also analyzed for determining the optimum test fuel at various operating conditions. The maximum increase in power is observed for 50% jatropha biodiesel and diesel blend at rated speed. Brake specific fuel consumptions for all the biodiesel blends with diesel increases with blends and decreases with speed. There is a reduction in smoke for all the biodiesel and their blends when compared with diesel. Smoke emission reduces with blends and speeds during full throttle performance test.  相似文献

Experimental tests were investigated to evaluate the performance, emission and combustion of a diesel engine using neat rapeseed oil and its blends of 5%, 20% and 70%, and standard diesel fuel separately. The results indicate that the use of biodiesel produces lower smoke opacity (up to 60%), and higher brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) (up to 11%) compared to diesel fuel. The measured CO emissions of B5 and B100 fuels were found to be 9% and 32% lower than that of the diesel fuel, respectively. The BSFC of biodiesel at the maximum torque and rated power conditions were found to be 8.5% and 8% higher than that of the diesel fuel, respectively. From the combustion analysis, it was found that ignition delay was shorter for neat rapeseed oil and its blends tested compared to that of standard diesel. The combustion characteristics of rapeseed oil and its diesel blends closely followed those of standard diesel.  相似文献

Vegetable methyl ester was added in ethanol–diesel fuel to prevent separation of ethanol from diesel in this study. The ethanol blend proportion can be increased to 30% in volume by adding the vegetable methyl ester. Engine performance and emissions characteristics of the fuel blends were investigated on a diesel engine and compared with those of diesel fuel. Experimental results show that the torque of the engine is decreased by 6%–7% for every 10% (by volume) ethanol added to the diesel fuel without modification on the engine. Brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) increases with the addition of oxygen from ethanol but equivalent brake specific fuel consumption (EBSFC) of oxygenated fuels is at the same level of that of diesel. Smoke and particulate matter (PM) emissions decrease significantly with the increase of oxygen content in the fuel. However, PM reduction is less significant than smoke reduction. In addition, PM components are affected by the oxygenated fuel. When blended fuels are used, nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions are almost the same as or slightly higher than the NOx emissions when diesel fuel is used. Hydrocarbon (HC) is apparently decreased when the engine was fueled with ethanol–ester–diesel blends. Fuelling the engine with oxygenated diesel fuels showed increased carbon monoxide (CO) emissions at low and medium loads, but reduced CO emissions at high and full loads, when compared to pure diesel fuel.  相似文献

The paper presents the experimental results obtained concerning performances and pollution of a diesel engine fueled with diesel–biodiesel–ethanol blends compared with diesel fuel in laboratory tests. The main properties of the researched fuels are presented within this paper, in comparison with classical diesel fuel (chemical composition, density, kinematic viscosity, cold filter plugging point, flash point). Engines’ performances were evaluated by determining the brake specific fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency. For pollution evaluation the emissions of CO, CO2, NOx, HC and smoke have been measured. An increasing of brake specific fuel consumption has been observed, especially at lower engines’ loads, with maximum 32.4%, reducing engine brake thermal efficiency with maximum 21.7%. CO emissions decrease, especially at high loads with maximum 59%, on the basis of CO2 increased emissions. NOx emissions slightly increase, especially at partial and high loads, meanwhile HC and smoke emissions decrease in all engines’ load cycles.  相似文献

An experimental study of the performance and emission characteristics of diesel engine using direct and indirect injection combustion systems are carried out on a same model of two diesel engines fuelled with diesel and the blend of diesel and Chinese pistache biodiesel. The results show that the NOx emissions from the indirect injection combustion system (ICS) fuelled with diesel are reduced by around two thirds, compared to that from direct injection combustion system (DCS). Smoke emissions from the engine using ICS are all significantly lower than that of DCS, reduced by 70% for diesel; by 50-60% for the blend. The brake thermal efficiencies (BTEs) reduced by 8-10%, compared to that of DCS; the fuel consumptions increased by around 7-9%. It is also found that carbon monoxide (CO) emissions are reduced when the engine run at engine high power outputs, so are the hydrocarbon (HC) emissions from ICS at the peak power outputs. It is found that, when fuelled with the blend, the effects of ICS to the performance and emissions of diesel engine are very similar to that of running with diesel. For ICS engine fuelled with diesel and the blend fuel, the BSFCs for the blend are around 5% higher; the BTEs are around 2-4% lower; the reductions of NOx from the blend fuel are 5.1-8.4% on average for the ICS; the reductions of smoke from the blend fuel are 26.8-31.7% on average for the ICS. CO emissions are around a half lower; and HC emissions are around one fifth lower, compared to that of fuelling with diesel. Comparing to that of DCS fuelled with diesel, using ICS fuelled with the blended fuel has much lower emissions. NOx emissions decreased by 65.6% and 66.1%; smoke emissions decreased by 75.7% and 80.2%; CO emissions decreased by 55.8% and 46.0%; HC emissions decreased by 24.9% and 18.9%; with the BSFCs around 14.6-14.9% higher and the BTEs around 9.7-10.0% lower.  相似文献

Nitrogen oxides and smoke emissions are the most significant emissions for the diesel engines. Especially, fuels containing high-level oxygen content can have potential to reduce smoke emissions significantly. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the influence of n-butanol/diesel fuel blends (as an oxygenation additive for the diesel fuel) on engine performance and exhaust emissions in a small diesel engine. For this aim five-test fuels, B5 (contains 5% n-butanol and 95% diesel fuel in volume basis), B10, B15, B20 and neat diesel fuel, were prepared to test in a diesel engine. Tests were performed in a single cylinder, four stroke, unmodified, and naturally aspirated DI high speed diesel engine at constant engine speed (2600 rpm) and four different engine loads by using five-test fuels. The experimental test results showed that smoke opacity, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide emissions reduced while hydrocarbon emissions increased with the increasing n-butanol content in the fuel blends. In addition, there is an increase in the brake specific fuel consumption and in the brake thermal efficiency with increasing n-butanol content in fuel blends. Also, exhaust gas temperature decreased with increasing n-butanol content in the fuel blends.  相似文献

The performance of biodiesel obtained from mahua oil and its blend with high speed diesel in a Ricardo E6 engine has been presented in this paper together with some of its fuel properties. These properties were found to be comparable to diesel and confirming to both the American and European standards. Engine performance (brake specific fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency and exhaust gas temperature) and emissions (CO, smoke density and NOx) were measured to evaluate and compute the behaviour of the diesel engine running on biodiesel. The reductions in exhaust emissions and brake specific fuel consumption together with increase brake power, brake thermal efficiency made the blend of biodiesel (B20) a suitable alternative fuel for diesel and thus could help in controlling air pollution.  相似文献

Exhaust emissions and their effects on the environment and human health, such as mutagenicity of particulate matter (PM) and ozone-forming potential, must be considered when using an alternative fuel. In the present work, a test engine and two agricultural tractors ran on rapeseed oil methyl ester (biodiesel) or conventional diesel fuel as well as blends thereof. The objective was to detect any disproportionately positive or negative effects depending on blend levels, because conventional diesel fuel and biodiesel can be blended in every ratio. Generally, emissions of regulated compounds changed linearly with the blend level. The known positive and negative effects of biodiesel varied accordingly. Overall, no optimal blend was found. Increasing biodiesel content of the fuel caused a linear increase in benzene emissions in the agricultural five-mode engine test, an effect that may be explained from previous studies on precombustion chemistry. In using the test engine, it was found that PM from biodiesel significantly reduced mutagenic potential compared with that from diesel fuel, although in this work PM masses were found to be reproducibly higher for biodiesel from rapeseed oil compared with conventional diesel fuel. Ozone precursors increased 10–30% when using biodiesel compared with conventional diesel fuel. Emissions of aldehydes and alkenes are mainly responsible for this effect. N2O emissions increased when using a catalytic converter.  相似文献

A blend of 20% (v/v) ethanol/methyl soyate was prepared and added to diesel fuel as an oxygenated additive at volume percent levels of 15 and 20% (denoted as BE15 and BE20). We also prepared a blend containing 20% methyl soyate in diesel fuel (denoted as B20). The fuel blends that did not have any other additive were stable for up to 3 months. Engine performance and emission characteristics of the three different fuels in a diesel engine were investigated and compared with the base diesel fuel. Observations showed that particulate matter (PM) emission decreased with increasing oxygenate content in the fuels but nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions increased. The diesel engine fueled by BE20 emitted significantly less PM and a lower Bosch smoke number but the highest NOx among the fuel blends tested. All the oxygenate fuels produced moderately lower CO emissions relative to diesel fuel. The B20 blend emitted less total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions compared with base diesel fuel. This was opposite to the fuel blends containing ethanol (BE15, BE20), which produced much higher THC emission.  相似文献

An experimental investigation is conducted to evaluate the use of sunflower and cottonseed oil methyl esters (bio-diesels) of Greek origin as supplements in the diesel fuel at blend ratios of 10/90 and 20/80, in a fully instrumented, six-cylinder, turbocharged and after-cooled, direct injection (DI), Mercedes-Benz, mini-bus diesel engine installed at the authors’ laboratory. The tests are conducted using each of the above fuel blends, with the engine working at two speeds and three loads. Fuel consumption, exhaust smokiness and exhaust regulated gas emissions such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and total unburned hydrocarbons are measured. The differences in the measured performance and exhaust emissions from the baseline operation of the engine, i.e., when working with neat diesel fuel, and the two bio-diesels are determined and compared. Theoretical aspects of diesel engine combustion with the differing physical and chemical properties of these blends, aid the correct interpretation of the observed engine behavior.  相似文献

In this study, wasted cooking oil from restaurants was used to produce neat (pure) biodiesel through transesterification, and this converted biodiesel was then used to prepare biodiesel/diesel blends. The goal of this study was to compare the trace formation from the exhaust tail gas of a diesel engine when operated using the different fuel type: neat biodiesel, biodiesel/diesel blends, and normal diesel fuels. B20 produced the lowest CO concentration for all engine speeds. B50 produced higher CO2 than other fuels for all engine speeds, except at 2000 rpm where B20 gave the highest. The biodiesel and biodiesel/diesel blend fuels produced higher NOx for various engine speeds as expected. SO2 formation not only showed an increasing trend with increased engine speed but also showed an increasing trend as the percentage of diesel increased in the fuels. Among the collected data, the PM concentrations from B100 engines were higher than from other fuelled engines for the tested engine speed and most biodiesel-contained fuels produced higher PM than the pure diesel fuel did. Overall, we may conclude that B20 and B50 are the optimum fuel blends. The species of trace formation in the biodiesel-contained fuelled engine exhaust were mainly CnH2n+2, DEP, and DPS. For the B100, B80, B50, and D fuelled engines, C15H32 was the dominant species for all engine speeds, while squalene (C30H50) was the dominant for B20. DEP was only observed in the B100, B80, and B50 fuelled engines in this study. The D fuelled engine showed a higher DPS production for engine speeds higher than 1200 rpm.  相似文献
