To obtain isotactic polypropylene (iPP) nanocomposites with high β‐crystal content, TMB5, calcium pimelate and calcium pimelate supported on the surface of nano‐CaCO3 were used as β‐nucleating agent and MWCNT filled β‐nucleated iPP nanocomposites were prepared. The effect of different β‐nucleating agent and MWCNT on the crystallization behavior and morphology, melting characteristic and β‐crystal content of β‐nucleated iPP nanocomposites were investigated by DSC, XRD and POM. The results indicated that addition of MWCNT increased the crystallization temperature of iPP and MWCNT filled iPP nanocomposites mainly formed α‐crystal. The β‐nucleating agent can induce the formation of β‐crystal in MWCNT filled iPP nanocomposites. The β‐nucleating ability and β‐crystal content in MWCNT filled β‐nucleated iPP nanocomposites decreased with increasing MWCNT content and increased with increasing β‐nucleating agent content due to the nucleation competition between MWCNT and β‐nucleating agents. It is found that the calcium pimelate supported on the surface of inorganic particles as β‐nucleating agent has stronger heterogeneous β‐nucleation than calcium pimelate and TMB5. The MWCNT filled iPP nanocomposites with high β‐crystal content can be obtained by supported β‐nucleating agent. POLYM. COMPOS., 36:635–643, 2015. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

To investigate the nucleation of metal pimelate for isotactic polypropylene (iPP) crystallization, iPP filled with a series of metal oxides with and without metal pimelate on their surface was prepared. There was a chemical reaction between pimelic acid (PA) and metal oxides MgO, CaO, BaO or ZnO, but not TiO2. The corresponding metal pimelate formed by the chemical reaction between PA and MgO, CaO, BaO or ZnO had a different influence on the crystallization behavior and melting characteristics of iPP. Addition of metal oxides increased the crystallization temperature of iPP and mainly formed α‐phase due to the heterogeneous α‐nucleation of metal oxides. The α‐nucleation of CaO could be easily changed into β‐nucleation using CaO‐supported PA, and 90.1% β‐phase was obtained. The β‐nucleation of BaO could be markedly enhanced by barium pimelate formed using supported PA. However, no β‐phase was observed for iPP filled with MgO‐ or ZnO‐supported PA. The various metal oxides with supported PA had a different influence on the crystallization behavior and melting characteristics of iPP due to the different structure of metal pimelate formed by chemical reaction between PA and the metal oxides. The influence of the composition ratio of pimelic acid/calcium stearate bicomponent nucleator on the β crystal form content of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) had been studied at the crystallization temperature of 120°C and duration of 30 min. It was found that the β crystal form content increased continuously with increasing amount of calcium stearate at the constant amount of 0.15% pimelic acid. High β crystal form content polypropylene could be produced when the amount of calcium stearate was greater than 0.30% (the mass composition ratio of pimelic acid/calcium stearate was less than 1/2, the mole ratio was less than 1.89/1). It was shown that pimelic acid and calcium stearate could react to produce a high effective β nucleator (calcium pimelate) “in situ” during the melt‐mixing of iPP and the bicomponent nucleator. The influence of crystallization temperatures (100–140°C) on the β crystal form content of iPP had also been studied at the constant composition ratio of 0.15% pimelic acid/0.5% calcium stearate (the calcium pimelate produced in situ was 0.16%, which was calculated from stoichiometry). It was found that the β crystal form content increased continuously with increasing crystallization temperature and it maximized at 130°C. β Crystal form content decreased sharply at the crystallization temperature of 140°C. It was shown that β → α modification transformed between 130 and 140°C. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

A highly novel nano‐CaCO3 supported β‐nucleating agent was employed to prepare β‐nucleated isotactic polypropylene (iPP) blend with polyamide (PA) 66, β‐nucleated iPP/PA66 blend, as well as its compatibilized version with maleic anhydride grafted PP (PP‐g‐MA), maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene‐octene (POE‐g‐MA), and polyethylene‐vinyl acetate (EVA‐g‐MA), respectively. Nonisothermal crystallization behavior and melting characteristics of β‐nucleated iPP and its blends were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter and wide angle X‐ray diffraction. Experimental results indicated that the crystallization temperature (T) of PP shifts to high temperature in the non‐nucleated PP/PA66 blends because of the α‐nucleating effect of PA66. T of PP and the β‐crystal content (Kβ) in β‐nucleated iPP/PA66 blends not only depended on the PA66 content, but also on the compatibilizer type. Addition of PP‐g‐MA and POE‐g‐MA into β‐nucleated iPP/PA66 blends increased the β‐crystal content; however, EVA‐g‐MA is not benefit for the formation of β‐crystal in the compatibilized β‐nucleated iPP/PA66 blend. It can be relative to the different interfacial interactions between PP and compatibilizers. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of PP in the blends was evaluated by Mo's method. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

A novel highly efficient β‐nucleating agent for isotactic polypropylene (iPP), hexahydrophthalic barium (HHPA‐Ba), was found and its effects on the mechanical properties, the β‐phase content, and crystallization behavior of iPP were investigated, respectively. The results show that the β‐phase content of nucleated iPP (kβ value) can reach 80.2% with 0.4 wt % HHPA‐Ba. The impact strength and crystallization peak temperature of nucleated iPP are greatly increased. Compared with pure iPP, the impact strength of nucleated iPP can increase 2.4 times. Meanwhile, the spherulite size of nucleated iPP is dramatically decreased than that of pure iPP. The Caze method was used to investigate the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nucleated iPP and the crystallization active energy was achieved by Kissinger method. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: It is a challenge for polymer processing to promote the formation of γ‐phase under atmospheric conditions in isotactic polypropylene (iPP) copolymer containing chain errors. Incorporation of an α‐nucleator in iPP copolymer seems reasonable since it can enhance non‐isothermal crystallization. Up to now, however, the issue regarding a β‐nucleated iPP copolymer still remains unclear, which is the subject of this study. RESULTS: The results indicate that the γ‐phase indeed occurs in a β‐nucleated random iPP copolymer with ethylene co‐unit (PPR) sample and becomes predominant at slow cooling rates (e.g. 1 °C min?1) where the formation of the β‐form is suppressed to a large extent. With detailed morphological observations the formation of γ‐phase in the β‐nucleated PPR sample at slow cooling rate is unambiguously attributed to the nucleating duality of the β‐nucleator towards α‐ and β‐polymorphs. The α‐crystals, induced by the β‐nucleator, serve as seeds for the predominant growth of the γ‐phase. Moreover, the presence of the β‐nucleator, acting as heterogeneous nuclei, promotes the formation of γ‐phase in the nucleated PPR sample, at least to some extent. CONCLUSION: The findings in this study extend our insights into the formation of γ‐phase in β‐nucleated iPP copolymer and, most importantly, provide an alternative route to obtain iPP rich in γ‐phase. The efficiency of heterogeneous nucleation of isotactic polypropylenes (iPP) with various isotacticity and MWD is estimated by an increase of the crystallization temperature (Tcr). A bi‐component nucleating system, composed of a pimelic acid and a calcium stearate, was added to the polymeric matrix in the molten state. The relative increase of Tcr is found to be independent on the structure stereo‐regularity of iPP. On the contrary, dependent on the polymer structure, the investigated nucleating system influences in a different way the creation of the β‐phase. The form of the DSC melting curves, for the β‐phase rich iPP samples, is discussed in terms of various preliminary cooling conditions. The transformation from a multi‐modal form of the DSC melting peak to a simple one is related to the lowering of the cooling rate and to the increase of the heating rate.  相似文献

A new kind of β nucleating agent, multi‐wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)‐supported calcium pimelate was introduced into polyamide 6 (PA 6)/isotactic polypropylene (iPP; 10/90 by weight) blend and the thermal properties, morphology, and mechanical properties were investigated. The results showed that β‐iPP appeared at low content of MWCNT‐supported calcium pimelate which surmounted the α‐nucleating effect of PA 6 for iPP, and the content of β‐iPP increased with increasing content of MWCNT‐supported calcium pimelate. The impact strength, elongation at break, and flexural modulus were improved with increasing content of MWCNT‐supported calcium pimelate without significantly deteriorating the tensile strength. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Zinc adipate (Adi‐Zn) was observed to be a highly active and selective β‐nucleating agent for isotactic polypropylene (iPP). The effects of Adi‐Zn on the mechanical properties and the β‐crystals content of nucleated iPP were investigated. The impact strength of iPP nucleated with 0.2 wt % Adi‐Zn was 1.8 times higher than that of neat iPP. In addition, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction analysis indicated that the content of β‐crystals in nucleated iPP (kβ value) reached 0.973 with 0.1 wt % Adi‐Zn, indicating that Adi‐Zn is a highly active and selective β‐nucleating agent for iPP. Furthermore, fast scanning chip calorimetry (FSC) studies using cooling rates from 60 to 13,800 °C min?1 revealed that the formation of β‐crystals significantly depended on the cooling rates. At cooling rates below 3000 °C min?1, only β‐crystals existed. However, at cooling rates above 6000 °C min?1, β‐crystals failed to form. Moreover, a lower critical crystallization temperature that corresponded to the generation of β‐crystals was investigated using cooling‐induced crystallization, and the results are in good agreement with those of a previous study. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. β‐Polypropylene composites containing calcium carbonate treated by titanate coupling agent (T‐CaCO3) and maleic anhydride grafted PP (PP‐g‐MAH) were prepared by melt compounding. The crystallization, morphology and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and mechanical tests. It is found that both T‐CaCO3 and NT‐C are able to induce the formation of β‐phase, and NT‐C greatly increases the β content and decreases the spherulitic size of PP. PP‐g‐MAH facilitates the formation of β‐form PP and improves the compatibility between T‐CaCO3 and PP. Izod notched impact strength of β‐PP/T‐CaCO3 composite is higher than that of PP/T‐CaCO3 composite, indicating the synergistic toughening effect of T‐CaCO3 and β‐PP. Incorporation of PP‐g‐MAH into β‐PP/T‐CaCO3 composite further increases the content of β‐crystal PP and improves the impact strength and tensile strength when T‐CaCO3 concentration is below 5 wt%. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of β‐PP composites is well described by Jeziorny's and Mo's methods. It is found that NT‐C and T‐CaCO3 accelerate the crystallization rate of PP but the influence of PP‐g‐MAH on crystallization rate of β‐PP composite is marginal. POLYM. Seven dicarboxylates of calcium were synthesized. The effect of dicarboxylate on the formation of β‐form polypropylene was investigated by X‐ray diffraction. Calcium pimelate, calcium suberate, calcium phthalate, and calcium terephthalate have been found to be an effective β‐nucleator. The Kx values of the isotatic propylene samples with 0.5 wt % of the nucleators above are 0.95, 0.96, 0.93, and 0.62, respectively. Calcium succinate, calcium adipate, and calcium sebacate behave invalidly on the nucleating of the β‐phase. We conducted an investigation on the affect of particle shape, crystal form, and crystallinity upon the level of the β‐form. The X‐ray diffraction of the effective nucleators reveals a common character that their first reflection locate at the d‐spacing between 10 to 13 Å, indicating structural similarity of the nucleators with β‐polypropylene. The nucleation mechanism is explained by the cooperative effect of the nonpolar and polar part of nucleating agents in the crystallization of polypropylene. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Calcium salts of suberic (Ca‐Sub) and pimelic (Ca‐Pim) acids were synthesized and implemented as in different grades of isotactic polypropylene (iPP). Propylene homopolymer, as well as random and block copolymers containing these additives, crystallized iPP into pure or nearly pure β modification in the isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization experiments. Recently, Ca‐Sub proved to be the most effective β‐nucleating agent of iPP. The Ca‐Sub nucleating agent widens the upper crystallization temperature range of pure β‐iPP formation up to 140°C. In this study the effect of the these additives on the crystallization, melting characteristics, and structure of the PP were studied. The degree of crystallinity of β‐iPP was markedly higher than that of α‐iPP. A widening in the melting peak of the samples crystallized in a high temperature range was first observed and discussed in regard to literature results of the same phenomenon for α‐iPP. The morphology of the β‐iPP samples was revealed by scanning electron microscopy. Independent of the type of polymer or nucleating agent, hedritic structures were found in the early stages of growth of the β‐spherulites. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The β-nucleated PP with high β-PP content was prepared by a novel supported β-nucleating agent, which was prepared with pimelic acid supported on nano-CaCO3 as support. The influences of the content of the support and supported β-nucleating agent, pre-melting temperature (Tmelt) and scan rates on crystallization behavior and melting characteristics, and the β-PP content of β-nucleated PP were determined by Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) and Wide-Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD). The results indicated that the addition of supported β-nucleating agent markedly increased the crystallization temperature (Tc) of PP. Increasing the content of supported β-nucleating agent slightly increased the Tc, but had no influence on the melting temperatures (Tm) of β-nucleated PP. The Tc and Tm of β-nucleated PP decreased slightly with increasing the content of the support nano-CaCO3. The effects of scan rates and multiple scans with different Tmelt on the crystallization and melting behavior of PP nucleated by supported β-nucleating agent are similar to that of PP nucleated by calcium pimelate (CaHA). The β-PP content above 90 percent was obtained in PP nucleated by supported β-nucleating agent and was not influenced by the content of nano-CaCO3. The supported β-nucleating agent prepared by supporting pimelic acid on nano-CaCO3 is a β-nucleating agent with high efficiency and selectivity, and low cost.  相似文献

A novel highly active β‐nucleating agent, β‐cyclodextrin complex with lanthanum (β‐CD‐MAH‐La), was introduced to isotactic polypropylene (iPP). Its influence on isothermal crystallization and melting behavior of iPP was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and polarized light microscopy (PLM). WAXD results demonstrated that β‐CD‐MAH‐La was an effective β‐nucleating agent, with β‐crystal content of iPP being strongly influenced by the content of β‐CD‐MAH‐La and the isothermal crystallization temperature. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of pure iPP and iPP/β‐CD‐MAH‐La was described appropriately by Avrami equation, and results revealed that β‐CD‐MAH‐La promoted heterogeneous nucleation and accelerated the crystallization of iPP. In addition, the equilibrium melting temperature (T) of samples was determined using linear and nonlinear Hoffman‐Weeks procedure. Finally, the Lauritzen‐Hoffman secondary nucleation theory was applied to calculate the nucleation parameter (Kg) and the fold surface energy (σe), the value of which verify that the addition of β‐CD‐MAH‐La reduced the creation of new surface for β‐crystal and then led to faster crystallization rate. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Modification of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) with two nucleation agents, namely 1,3:24‐bis(3,4‐dimethylobenzylideno) sorbitol (DMDBS) (α‐nucleator) and N, N′‐dicyclohexylo‐2,6‐naphthaleno dicarboxy amide (NJ) (β‐nucleator), leads to significant changes of the structure, morphology and properties. Both nucleating agents cause an increase in the crystallization temperature. The efficiency determined in a self‐nucleation test is 73.4 % for DMDBS and 55.9 % for NJ. The modification with NJ induces the creation of the hexagonal β‐form of iPP. The addition of DMDBS lowers the haze of iPP while the presence of NJ increases the haze. Nano‐CaCO3/polypropylene (PP) composites modified with polypropylene grafted with acrylic acid (PP‐g‐AA) or acrylic acid with and without dicumyl peroxide (DCP) were prepared by a twin‐screw extruder. The crystallization and melting behavior of PP in the composites were investigated by DSC. The experimental results showed that the crystallization temperature of PP in the composites increased with increasing nano‐CaCO3 content. Addition of PP‐g‐AA further increased the crystallization temperatures of PP in the composites. It is suggested that PP‐g‐AA could improve the nucleation effect of nano‐CaCO3. However, the improvement in the nucleation effect of nano‐CaCO3 would be saturated when the PP‐g‐AA content of 5 phf (parts per hundred based on weight of filler) was used. The increase in the crystallization temperature of PP was observed by adding AA into the composites and the crystallization temperature of the composites increased with increasing AA content. It is suggested that the AA reacted with nano‐CaCO3 and the formation of Ca(AA)2 promoted the nucleation of PP. In the presence of DCP, the increment of the AA content had no significant influence on the crystallization temperature of PP in the composites. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the melt structure of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) nucleated with α/β compounded nucleating agents (α/β‐CNA, composed of the α‐NA of 0.15 wt % Millad 3988 and the β‐NA of 0.05 wt % WBG‐II) was tuned by changing the fusion temperature Tf. In this way, the role of melt structure on the crystallization behavior and polymorphic composition of iPP were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that when Tf = 200°C (iPP was fully molten), the α/β‐CNA cannot encourage β‐phase crystallization since the nucleation efficiency (NE) of the α‐NA 3988 was obviously higher than that of the β‐NA WBG‐II. Surprisingly, when Tf was in 179–167°C, an amount of ordered structures survived in the melt, resulting in significant increase of the proportion of β‐phase (achieving 74.9% at maximum), indicating that the ordered structures of iPP played determining role in β‐phase crystallization of iPP nucleated with the α/β‐CNA. Further investigation on iPP respectively nucleated with individual 3988 and WBG‐II showed that as Tf decreased from 200°C to 167°C, the crystallization peak temperature Tc of iPP/3988 stayed almost constant, while Tc of iPP/WBG‐II increased gradually when Tf < 189°C and became higher than that of iPP/3988 when Tf decreased to 179°C and lower, which can be used to explain the influence of ordered structure and α/β‐CNA on iPP crystallization. Using this method, the selection of α‐NA for α/β‐CNA can be greatly expanded even if the inherent NE of β‐NA is lower than that of the α‐NA. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The nucleating ability of p‐cyclohexylamide carboxybenzene (β‐NA) towards isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, X‐ray diffraction, polarized optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. β‐NA is identified to have dual nucleating ability for α‐iPP and β‐iPP under appropriate kinetic conditions. The formation of β‐iPP is dependent on the content of β‐NA. The content of β‐phase can reach as high as 96.96% with the addition of only 0.05 wt% β‐NA. Under non‐isothermal crystallization the content of β‐iPP increases with increasing cooling rate. The maximum β‐crystal content is obtained at a cooling rate of 40 °C min–1. The supermolecular structure of the β‐iPP is identified as a leaf‐like transcrystalline structure with an ordered lamellae arrangement perpendicular to the special surface of β‐NA. Under isothermal crystallization β‐crystals can be formed in the temperature range 80–140 °C. The content of β‐crystals reaches its maximum value at a crystallization temperature of 130 °C. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Nano‐sized calcium carbonate (nano‐CaCO3)‐supported nucleating agent for poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) was prepared by supporting calcium phenylphosphonate (PPCa) on nano‐CaCO3 surface. The thermal properties of phenylphosphonic acid (PPOA) and nano‐CaCO3‐supported nucleating agent and its dispersion in PLLA matrix were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the formation of nucleating agent supported on nano‐CaCO3 was attributed to the chemical reaction between nano‐CaCO3 and PPOA. The nano‐CaCO3‐supported nucleating agents were dispersed evenly in the PLLA matrix even with 5 wt% loading. The supported nucleating agent was added to PLLA to examine its nucleating ability for PLLA. The results of the investigation showed that the nano‐CaCO3‐supported nucleating agent exhibited higher nucleation ability compared to PPCa nucleating agent. POLYM. ENG. The isothermal crystallization and subsequent melting behavior of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) composites filled with nano‐CaCO3 were investigated at designated temperatures with differential scanning calorimetry. The Avrami equation was used to fit the isothermal crystallization. The Avrami exponents were determined to be 2–3 for the neat PTT and PTT/CaCO3 composites. The particles of nano‐CaCO3, acting as nucleating agents in the composites, accelerated the crystallization rate, with the half‐time of crystallization decreasing or the growth rate constant (involving both nucleation and growth rate parameters) increasing. The crystallization activation energy calculated from the Arrhenius formula was reduced as the nano‐CaCO3 content increased from 0 to 2%, and this suggested that nano‐CaCO3 made the molecular chains of PTT easier to crystallize during the isothermal crystallization process. Subsequent melting scans of the isothermally crystallized composites exhibited triple or double melting endotherms: the greater the content was of nano‐CaCO3, the lower the temperature was of the melting peak. The degree of crystallization deduced from the melt enthalpy of composites with the proper concentration of nano‐CaCO3 was higher than that of pure PTT, but it was lower when the nano‐CaCO3 concentration was more than 2%. The transmission electron microscopy pictures suggested that the dispersion state of nano‐CaCO3 particles in the polymer matrix was even when its concentration was no more than 2%, whereas some agglomeration occurred when its concentration was 4%. Polarized microscopy pictures showed that much smaller or less perfect crystals formed in the composites because of the interaction between the molecular chains and nano‐CaCO3 particles. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
