One of Roberts' key contributions was his work demonstrating the applicability of several ecological rules to human populations (Roberts [1953] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 11:533-558; [1978] Climate and Human Variability, 2nd ed., Menlo Park, CA: Cummings). His finding that average body weight systematically covaries with mean annual temperature was widely taken as confirmation of Bergmann's rule for humans. More recently his findings on weight and temperature have been extended and confirmed (Ruff [1994] Yrbk. Phys. Anthropol. 37:65-407; Katzmarzyk and Leonard [1995] Hum Biol Council Program Abstracts 132) although the strength of the association may be decreasing when considering more recent surveys (Katzmarzyk and Leonard [1995]). Roberts noted in 1953 that Oceanic populations may be somewhat of an exception to Bergmann's rule, and we propose that Neel's ([1962] Am. J. Hum. Genet. 14:353-362) thrifty genotype model may account for some of the deviation from predicted weights among these populations. We provide an updated version of the thrifty genotype model, suggesting that selection for energetic efficiency may have occurred for some Oceanic populations during the voyaging to and settlement of their island homes. Under conditions of modernization the thrifty genotype may be manifesting as high rates of obesity and NIDDM among Polynesians and Micronesians. First, using measurements of adult male weight from 19 Oceanic populations, we demonstrate the extreme nature of their deviation from predicted weight based on Roberts' regression of weight on mean annual temperature. Next, we regress the deviations from predicted weight on NIDDM prevalence for these 19 populations, producing a highly significant regression (R2 = 0.46; P < 0.001), consistent with expectations if the thrifty genotype is responsible for the high weights.  相似文献

Stable carbon isotope ratios in prehistoric human bone collagen have been used extensively to document the introduction and intensification of maize horticulture in notheastern North America. Most previous studies are based on small samples of adults who are assumed to characterize the diet of the population. In this study, all 29 individuals buried within an Ontario Iroquoian village site dated A.D. 1530-1580 were analysed for stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. Age distribution of the sample ranges from preterm to elderly. Significant negative correlations between age and delta 13C, and age and delta 15N values were found. High delta 13C values in infants and young children (delta 13C = -6.8 to -12.3) suggest a weaning diet high in maize. High delta 15N values in infants relative to adults suggest a trophic level effect during breast-feeding which has been reported in a modern sample by Tuross et al. (Am. J. Phys. Anthropol., 1993). In addition to the isotopic evidence for extremely high carbohydrate (maize) intake, the MacPherson sample includes two juveniles aged 3-4 years, exhibiting circular caries. No other cases of this condition are known in the extensively studied southern Ontario skeletal collections. Together the evidence from dentition and stable carbon isotopes indicates a very high carbohydrate diet in subadults. Circular caries result from developmental stress during enamel formation with subsequent caries formation in areas of thinner enamel. These findings are relevant to studies of infant and early childhood morbidity and mortality among prehistoric maize horticulturists.  相似文献

Interlimb coordination is directly relevant to the understanding of the neural control of locomotion, but few studies addressing this topic for nonhuman primates are available, and no data exist for any hominoid other than humans. As a follow-up to Jungers and Anapol's ([1985] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 67:89-97) analysis on a lemur and talapoin monkey, we describe here the patterns of interlimb coordination in two chimpanzees as revealed by electromyography. Like the lemur and talapoin monkey, ipsilateral limb coupling in chimpanzees is characterized by variability about preferred modes within individual gaits. During symmetrical gaits, limb coupling patterns in the chimpanzee are also influenced by kinematic differences in hindlimb placement ("overstriding"). These observations reflect the neurological constraints placed on locomotion but also emphasize the overall flexibility of locomotor neural mechanisms. Interlimb coordination patterns are also species-specific, exhibiting significant differences among primate taxa and between primates and cats. Interspecific differences may be suggestive of phylogenetic divergence in the basic mechanisms for neural control of locomotion, but do not preclude morphological explanations for observed differences in interlimb coordination across species.  相似文献

Reports an error in the original article by J. Krueger and R. W. Clement (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1994[Oct], Vol 67[4], 596–610). A correction to the equation on page 605 is provided. (The following abstract of this article originally appeared in PA, Vol 82:5338.) Consensus bias is the overuse of self-related knowledge in estimating the prevalence of attributes in a population. The bias seems statistically appropriate (R. M. Dawes; see record 1989-25841-001), but according to the egocentrism hypothesis, it merely mimics normative inductive reasoning. In Exp 1, Ss made population estimates for agreement with each of 40 personality inventory statements. Even Ss who had been educated about the consensus bias, or had received feedback about actual consensus, or both showed the bias. In Exp 2, Ss attributed bias to another person, but their own consensus estimates were more affected by their own response to the item than by the other person's response. In Exp 3, there was bias even in the presence of unanimous information from 20 randomly chosen others. Planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes to promote appropriate infant feeding practices require detailed, current information about these practices in the target populations. To estimate the prevalences and identify the correlates of overall breast-feeding and of exclusive breast-feeding in different age periods during infancy, a cohort of 152 apparently healthy neonates and their mothers were followed during October 1987 through April 1989 in rural Bilbeis, Sharqiya Governorate, Egypt. Feeding data were collected through twice weekly home visits thus reducing the potential for bias in our findings due to respondent recall errors. The prevalence of overall breastfeeding in the infants declined from 100% in age period 0-11 weeks to 89% in age period 36-47 weeks. Mothers with previous living children were associated with significantly higher (odds ratio [OR]: 6.53, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.33-32.09) and ownership of refrigerators was associated with significantly lower (OR: 0.18, 95% CI: 0.05-0.67) overall breast-feeding prevalences in age periods 24-35 and 36-47 weeks, respectively. The prevalence of exclusive breast-feeding in breast-fed infants dropped from 20% in age period 0-11 weeks to 0% in age period 36-47 weeks. After multivariate adjustment, prelacteal feeding was significantly negatively (OR: 0.12, 95% CI: 0.04-0.37) associated with exclusive breast-feeding in age period 0-11 weeks. Nearly 90% of Bilbeis infants were breast-fed at age 47 weeks, but the initiation of supplementation at 0-11 weeks in 80% of breast-fed infants is contrary to current recommendations.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The study was set up to assess the effect of recruitment methods on participation rate, response bias and cardiovascular risk factor estimates. METHODS: Two random samples of men and women in Halifax County aged 25-74 were drawn from the same sampling frame. Their respective sizes were 1007 (NSHHS) and 3036 (MONICA) people. Recruitment by Nova Scotia Heart Health Survey (NSHHS) was through face-to-face contact, whereas the MONICA survey relied on invitation by mail. Outcome measures were response rates at various stages of the recruitment process and the differences in cardiovascular risk factor estimates. RESULTS: Face-to-face recruitment located 51% and mail recruitment located 47% of their respective samples; face-to-face recruitment resulted in fewer individuals who refused to participate in the survey, but also produced fewer who were prepared to provide blood samples in addition to answering questionnaires. By-mail recruits were more likely to have post-secondary education, but did not differ in the proportion of smokers, mean diastolic blood pressure or body mass index, if controlled for education level, gender and age. However, the mean systolic blood pressure was 5.7 mmHg higher and the mean cholesterol level 0.44 mmol/l lower in face-to-face recruits. CONCLUSIONS: Controlling for age, gender and education level eliminates the effect of recruitment bias on most cardiovascular risk factors estimates. The exceptions in our study were systolic blood pressure and cholesterol, where methodological factors may have played a role.  相似文献

Kinematic data on primate head and neck posture were collected by filming 29 primate species during locomotion. These were used to test whether head and neck posture are significant influences on basicranial flexion and whether the Frankfurt plane can legitimately be employed in paleoanthropological studies. Three kinematic measurements were recorded as angles relative to the gravity vector, the inclination of the orbital plane, the inclination of the neck, and the inclination of the Frankfurt plane. A fourth kinematic measurement was calculated as the angle between the neck and the orbital plane (the head-neck angle [HNA]). The functional relationships of basicranial flexion were examined by calculating the correlations and partial correlations between HNA and craniometric measurements representing basicranial flexion, orbital kyphosis, and relative brain size (Ross and Ravosa [1993] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 91:305-324). Significant partial correlations were observed between relative brain size and basicranial flexion and between HNA and orbital kyphosis. This indicates that brain size, rather than head and neck posture, is the primary influence on flexion, while the degree of orbital kyphosis may act to reorient the visual field in response to variation in head and neck posture. Regarding registration planes, the Frankfurt plane was found to be horizontal in humans but inclined in all nonhuman primates. In contrast, nearly all primates (including humans) oriented their orbits such that they faced anteriorly and slightly inferiorly. These results suggest that for certain functional craniometric studies, the orbital plane may be a more suitable registration plane than Frankfurt "Horizontal."  相似文献

The same polypeptide chain (58 amino acids, 6 cysteines) is used to build up two ferredoxins in Desulfovibrio gigas a sulfate reducing organism. Ferredoxin II (FdII) contains a single [Fe3S4] core and ferredoxin I (FdI) mainly a [Fe4S4] core. The [Fe3S4] core can readily be interconverted into a [Fe4S4] complex (J.J.G. Moura, I. Moura, T.A. Kent, J.D. Lipscomb, B.H. Huynh, J. LeGall, A.V. Xavier, and E. Munck, J. Biol. Chem. 257, 6259 (1982)). This interconversion process suggested that the [Fe3S4] core could be used as a synthetic precursor for the formation of heterometal clusters. Co, Zn, Cd, and Ni derivatives were produced (I. Moura, J.J.G. Moura, E. Munck, V. Papaephthymiou, and J. LeGall, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 108, 349 (1986), K. Sureurs, E. Munck, I. Moura, J.J.G. Moura, and J. LeGall, J. Am. Chem. The redox properties of a series of heterometal clusters (MFe3S4] are assessed using direct electrochemistry (square wave voltammetry--SWV) promoted by Mg(II) at a glassy carbon electrode (derivatives: Cd (-495 mV), Fe (-420 mV), Ni (-360 mV), and Co (-245 mV) vs normal hydrogen electrode (NHE)). In parallel, the electrochemical behavior (cyclic voltammetry--CV, differential pulse voltammetry--DPV and SWV) of FdI and FdII were investigated as well as the cluster interconversion process. In addition to the +1/0 (3Fe cluster) and +2/+1 (4Fe cluster) redox transitions, a very negative redox step, at -690 mV, was detected for the 3Fe core, reminiscent of a postulated further 2e- reduction step, as proposed for D. africanus ferredoxin III by F.A. Armstrong, S.J. George, R. Cammack, E.C. Hatchikian, and A.J. Thomson, Biochem. J. 264, 265 (1989). The electrochemical redox potential values are compared with those determined by independent methods (namely by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and visible spectroscopy).  相似文献

Our previous studies have suggested that there is minimal fecal excretion of carbohydrate-derived energy in premature infants fed lactose or glucose-polymer as the source of carbohydrate. In these studies, carbohydrate energy excretion was equated with the non-nitrogenous, nonfat energy. Although these studies provided consistent results, this methodological approach cannot distinguish actual excretion of dietary carbohydrate from carbohydrate in the form of large molecular compounds derived from infant or bacterial cells (which in fact comprise approximately 90% of the measured value). Therefore, in this study we compared the absorption of carbohydrate energy to the fractional absorption of 13C derived from [D-1-13C]-lactose in 10 premature infants 30-32 weeks gestational age fed either a commercial premature infant formula containing a mixture of carbohydrates (50% lactose: 50% glucose polymer) or the same formula in which lactose was the sole carbohydrate. The two methods provided comparable estimates of carbohydrate absorption (96 and 94%, respectively), although there were significant discrepancies in two infants. These studies provide evidence of external validity for the two methods.  相似文献

A "new" syndrome was identified by McPherson and Clemens [1996: Am J Med Genet 62:58-60] in a brother and sister with bilateral cleft lip and palate, hypertelorism, flat facial profile, flat occiput, and complex heart defects. The brother also had a bilobed tongue and the sister had malrotation of the intestine and bifid thumbs. We describe three brothers with similar anomalies apart from the bilobed tongue, malrotation of the intestine, and bifid thumbs. McPherson and Clemens [1996: Am J Med Genet 62:58-60] suggested autosomal recessive inheritance. Our observation of three affected brothers also raises the possibility of X-linked recessive inheritance.  相似文献

Because considerable information about progression of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has been provided by studies of cohorts of individuals with prevalent HIV infection, this study was designed to investigate bias due to onset confounding (differential time-since-infection distributions) and differential length-biased sampling in epidemiologic analyses of data from such cohorts. Subjects were participants in the Italian Seroconverters Study, a seroincident cohort of more than 1,200 adults seen at ambulatory care clinics in Italy, with observed HIV seroconversion in 1980-1988. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) diagnoses, based on the 1987 Centers for Disease Control case definition, and mortality were ascertained through Italian national registries through 1994. To estimate bias in prevalent cohorts, a series of pseudoseroprevalent (PSP) cohorts were drawn by sampling, from among the total seroincident cohort, prevalent AIDS-free subjects in each calendar year. The relative AIDS risk associated with a given covariate was calculated in each PSP cohort and compared with the relative AIDS risk for that covariate in the seroincident cohort. Relative risks were estimated by both the ratio of AIDS incidence densities and the relative AIDS hazards from proportional hazards regression. Differential length bias was not evident, as assessed in the following way: Among 338 individuals with seroconversion dates in 1983-1986, the relative risk of AIDS for subjects born before 1951 compared with those born more recently was 1.67 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.30-2.14). Although differential length-biased sampling was expected to bias this relative risk toward 1.0, the observed relative risk for earlier birth ranged from 1.79 to 2.86 in 1987-1992 PSP cohorts. Onset bias was observed: Among 644 subjects with seroconversion in 1980-1988, the AIDS relative risk for 1980-1985 seroconverters compared with 1986-1988 seroconverters was 1.09 (95% CI 0.76-1.55). Onset bias was seen in 1988-1990 PSP cohorts (relative risks for early seroconversion = 1.47, 1.46, and 1.34, respectively); in 1991-1992, relative risks were close to the expected value of 1.09, and CIs on relative risks from all PSP cohorts after 1989 included 1.0. Confounding attributable to differential length-biased sampling in prevalent cohorts does not necessarily bias estimates of the impact of covariates on rate of progression to AIDS. Bias can arise when a covariate suspected of affecting AIDS risk is closely linked to date of acquisition of HIV infection. However, onset bias appears to wane as subjects' dates of infection become more remote.  相似文献

McCredie and Reid [(1978): J Pediatr 92: 762-765] described an association of diaphragmatic hernia and upper limb deficiencies. Lerone et al. [(1992): Am J Med Genet 44:827-829] recently described a new case with this combination. We present an epidemiological study using two analytic methods with data from the Spanish Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECEMC). Cytopenias following bone marrow transplantation may be severe and life-threatening. These have been described post-allogeneic Klumpp, 1991: Bone Marrow Transplant 8:159-171. or post-autologous bone marrow transplants Khouri et al., 1994: J Clin Oncol 12:748-758. as well as with peripheral blood stem cell transplantation Klumpp et al., 1992: Am J Hematol 41:215-217. It can be immune mediated, associated on occasions with graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) Anasetti et al., 1989: Blood 4:1054-1058; however, in most cases, the underlying mechanism is uncertain. The treatment of post-transplant cytopenias is not well established, and they are often refractory to immunosuppressive therapy with steroids. Herein we describe two cases of neutropenia after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation that improved after therapy with high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin.  相似文献

Owing to a typographic error in computer programming, Tables 3 and 4 contain incorrect parameter estimates and chi-square values. The 1st study extrapolated earlier findings (J. H. Davis et al; see record 1989-15329-001) that the critical 4th voter in 6-person mock juries evenly divided between guilty- and not-guilty-inclined jurors (3,3) were significantly influenced by the preceding sequence (guilty or not-guilty faction voting first) and timing of a straw poll. Results implied that both procedural variables would have an effect on jury verdict distributions, but their magnitude was surprisingly low, especially for sequence. Exp 2 focused only on sequential voting in (4,2) groups in which sequential voting by majority-minority factions first was again observed to influence critical individuals, although the effect was sharply mediated by the "leniency bias." The additional empirical parameter estimates permitted a more comprehensive exploration of probable verdict consequences. Results showed that group-level decisions, under the particular conditions studied, remained counterintuitively robust against significant social influence pressures observed at the individual level, and familiar from numerous studies of conformity and minority influence. One can obtain population-based estimates of the penetrance of a measurable mutation from cohort studies, from population-based case-control studies, and from genotyped-proband designs (GPD). In a GPD, we assume that representative individuals (probands) agree to be genotyped, and one then obtains information on the phenotypes of first-degree relatives. We also consider an extension of the GPD in which a relative is genotyped (GPDR design). In this paper, we give methods and tables for determining sample sizes needed to achieve desired precision for penetrance estimates from such studies. We emphasize dichotomous phenotypes, but methods for survival data are also given. In an example based on the BRCA1 gene and parameters given by Claus et al. [(1991) Am J Hum Genet 48:232-242], we find that similar large numbers of families need to be studied using the cohort, case-control, and GPD designs if the allele frequency is known, though the GPDR design requires fewer families, and, if one can study mainly probands with disease, the GPD design also requires fewer families. If the allele frequency is not known, somewhat larger sample sizes are required. Surprisingly, studies with mixtures of families of affected and non-affected probands can sometimes be more efficient than studies based exclusively on affected probands when the allele frequency is unknown. We discuss the feasibility and validity of these designs and point out that GPD and GPDR designs are more susceptible to a bias that results when the tendency for an individual to volunteer to be a proband or to be a subject in a cohort or case-control study depends on the phenotypes of his or her relatives.  相似文献

This study reevaluates the long-standing observation that human morphology varies with climate. Data on body mass, the body mass index [BMI; mass (kg)/stature (m)2], the surface area/body mass ratio, and relative sitting height (RSH; sitting height/stature) were obtained for 223 male samples and 195 female samples derived from studies published since D.F. Roberts' landmark paper "Body weight, race, and climate" in 1953 (Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 11:533-558). Current analyses indicate that body mass varies inversely with mean annual temperature in males (r=-0.27, P < 0.001) and females (r=-0.28, P < 0.001), as does the BMI (males: r=-0.22, P=0.001; females: r=-0.30, P < 0.001). The surface area/body mass ratio is positively correlated with temperature in both sexes (males: r=0.29, P < 0.001; females: r=0.34, P < 0.001), whereas the relationship between RSH and temperature is negative (males: r=-0.37, P < 0.001; females: r=-0.46, P < 0.001). These results are consistent with previous work showing that humans follow the ecological rules of Bergmann and Allen. However, the slope of the best-fit regressions between measures of body mass (i.e., mass, BMI, and surface area/mass) and temperature are more modest than those presented by Roberts. These differences appear to be attributable to secular trends in mass, particularly among tropical populations. Body mass and the BMI have increased over the last 40 years, whereas the surface area/body mass ratio has decreased. These findings indicate that, although climatic factors continue to be significant correlates of world-wide variation in human body size and morphology, differential changes in nutrition among tropical, developing world populations have moderated their influence.  相似文献

We introduce a novel application for linkage analysis: using bone marrow donor-recipient sib pairs to search for genes influential in graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a major cause of morbidity and mortality following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. In particular, we show that transplant sib pairs in which the recipient developed severe GVHD can be used to map genes in the same way as traditional discordant (affected/unaffected) sib pairs (DSPs). For a plausible GVHD model, we demonstrate that the transplant/discordant sib pair analog of the "possible triangle test" [Holmans (1993) Am J Hum Genet 52:362-374] has similar power to that of the simpler "restricted test" proposed by Risch [(1990b) Am J Hum Genet 46:229-241; (1992) Am J Hum Genet 51:673-675]. Moreover, we show that the restricted test has superior power in much of the DSP possible triangle and significantly inferior power in only a small region. Thus, we conclude that the restricted test is preferable for localizing genes with transplant/discordant sib pairs. Finally, we examine the effects of heterogeneity on the power to detect GVHD loci and demonstrate the gain in efficiency by dividing the sample into genetically more homogeneous subgroups.  相似文献
