A simple fiber-optic sensor based on Fabry-Perot interference for refractive index measurement of optical glass is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. A broadband light source is coupled into an extrinsic fiber Fabry-Perot cavity formed by the surfaces of a sensing fiber end and the measured sample. The interference signals from the cavity are reflected back into the same fiber. The refractive index of the sample can be obtained by measuring the contrast of the interference fringes. The experimental data meet with the theoretical values very well. The proposed technique is a new method for glass refractive index measurement with a simple, solid, and compact structure.  相似文献

A new technique, microinterferometric optical phase tomography, is introduced for use in measuring small, asymmetric refractive-index differences in the profiles of optical fibers and fiber devices. The method combines microscopy-based fringe-field interferometry with parallel projection-based computed tomography to characterize fiber index profiles. The theory relating interference measurements to the projection set required for tomographic reconstruction is given, and discrete numerical simulations are presented for three test index profiles that establish the technique's ability to characterize fiber with small, asymmetric index differences. An experimental measurement configuration and specific interferometry and tomography practices employed in the technique are discussed.  相似文献

A method for measuring the length of an optical fiber by use of an optical fiber ring laser pulse source is proposed and demonstrated. The key element of the optical fiber ring laser is a gain-switched Fabry-Perot laser diode operated in a self-injection seeding scheme. This method is especially suitable for measuring a medium or long fiber, and a resolution of 0.1 m is experimentally achieved. The measurement is implemented by accurately determining the pulse frequency that can maximize the output power of the fiber ring laser. The measurement results depend only on the refractive index of the fiber corresponding to this single wavelength, instead of the group index of the fiber, which represents a great advantage over both optical time-domain reflectometry and optical low-coherence reflectometry methods.  相似文献

This report describes an optical phase contrast imaging technique for the measurement of wide bandwidth ultrasound fields in water. In this method, a collimated optical wavefront (λl = 810 nm) impinges on a wide bandwidth ultrasound pulse. The method requires that refractive index perturbations induced by the ultrasound field be sufficiently small. Specifically, on exit from the acoustic field, the phase of the optical wavefront must be proportional to the ray sum of local density taken in the direction of propagation of the incident optical wave. A similar restriction is placed on the dimensions of the ultrasound pulse. Repeated measurement of this phase as the ultrasound field is rotated through 180° about an axis normal to the direction of propagation of the incident optical wave generates the Radon transform of the ultrasonically induced refractive index perturbation. Standard tomographic reconstruction techniques are used to reconstruct the full three-dimensional refractive index perturbation. A simple two-lens imaging system and an optical signal processing element from phase contrast microscopy provide a method of directly measuring an affine function of the desired optical phase for small optical phase shifts. The piezo- and elasto-optic coefficients (the first partial derivatives of refractive index with respect to density and pressure) relate refractive index to density and pressure via a linear model. We report the progress of developing a fiber-optic probe hydrophone (FOPH) system applicable to the measurement of local density/pressure fluctuations in a cryogenic liquid. The measurement principle is based on a law of classical optics known as “Fresnel’s reflection loss.” We use this principle at the end-face of a single-mode optical fiber that is immersed in liquid helium. Since the refraction index of liquid 4He is a function of density, and the refraction index of the core of the optical fiber is constant, the pressure can be obtained by measuring the reflectivity. We have succeeded in measuring the temperature dependence of the static density, and we go on to discuss the possibility of application to acoustic pressure measurements.  相似文献

We present an improved, high-resolution method for the measurement of phase retardation induced by the material birefringence of optical fibers. Such a method can be used to retrieve information about the spatial distribution of refractive index anisotropy in the fiber by comparing the accumulated phase of a polarization component oriented along the fiber transmission axis and another located in the transverse plane. The method is based on the nonlinear regression of a phase modulated signal of known modulation amplitude altered by the sample. Experimental results obtained with our method for a standard telecommunications fiber (the Corning SMF-28) as well as photosensitive fibers (Fibercore PS1250 and PS1500) are presented with a noise-limited phase resolution below 10(-4) radians and a spatial resolution below 1 microm. An analysis of the limitation of such measurement methods is also presented including diffraction by the fibers.  相似文献

A fiber-optic sensor based on surface-plasmon resonance for the determination of the refractive index is used for measuring the degree of salinity of water. The transducing element consists of a multilayer structure deposited on a side-polished monomode optical fiber. Measuring the attenuation of the power transmitted by the fiber shows that a linear relation with the refractive index of the outer medium of the structure is obtained. The system is characterized by use of a varying refractive index obtained with a mixture of water and ethylene glycol. Experimental results show that the sensor can be used as a salinity-degree measurement device with environmental applications.  相似文献

针对传统有源电磁式互感器易饱和、稳定性与抗干扰能力差、安装受限等问题,本文基于Faraday磁光效应,设计了一种无源全光纤电流互感器,通过旋光角来测量被测电流;设计互感器以HB Spun光纤作为传感元件,无饱和现象,可用于大电流测量;利用光学互易回路,消除光路中温度、光纤缺陷等因素对旋光角测量的干扰;采用反射式光路将电场引起的旋光角放大4倍,实现小电流的精确测量;传感元件采用柔性传感光纤环结构,形状可变,适应复杂空间内电流的测量。对比了不同圈数的柔性光纤传感环与标准电流互感器的测量精度,结果表明,本文设计的光学互易回路可以消除温度对电流测量的影响,全光纤电流互感器在-5℃~70℃全温度范围内精度为0.5,可实现小电流的精确测量。  相似文献

研制了一种新型的利用激光光束反射原理的全光纤弹速测量系统。该系统采用了全光纤结构和光纤耦合器等无源器件,以输出光功率1mW, 工作波长1300nm的半导体激光器作为测试系统的光源,用光纤耦合器进行分光,实现了在一根光纤中同时传输光源和接受目标反射的信号光,避免了复杂的调节和准直过程。该系统结构简单、可靠性高,利用它,成功地测量了霍普金森杆发射的子弹速度,结果表明其速度测量相对不确定度小于1%。  相似文献

In this paper, an on-line bending loss measurement system is studied and realized. To avoid complicated calculation of fiber bending loss, we propose a simplified theoretical model for on-line evaluation. A specific fiber adaptor is developed for light signal feeding and picking up through a free space optical fiber coupling technique. Relevant factors, including free space fiber misalignment, are considered. The signal-to-noise ratio of the whole system is improved by optimizing the spatial perturbation length of the fiber and the deformation of the bending fiber. The use of an on-line monitoring technique for measuring the bending loss of optical fibers is presented in this paper. With this technique, manufacturing efficiency can be improved, and the cost of maintaining fiber quality control can be reduced.  相似文献

A wavelength-scanning heterodyne interference confocal microscope quickly accomplishes the simultaneous measurement of the thickness and the refractive index of a sample by detection of the amplitude and the phase of the interference signal during a sample scan. However, the measurement range of the optical path difference (OPD) that is obtained from the phase changes is limited by the time response of the phase-locked loop circuit in the FM demodulator. To overcome this limitation and to improve the accuracy of the separation measurement, we propose an OPD detection using digital signal processing with a Hilbert transform. The measurement range is extended approximately five times, and the resolution of the OPD is improved to 5.5 from 9 microm without the electrical noise of the FM demodulator circuit. By applying this method for simultaneous measurement of thickness and the refractive index, we can measure samples 20-30-microm thick with refractive indices between 1 and 1.5.  相似文献

Fiber-loop ring-down spectroscopy (FLRDS) is a recently developed absorption spectroscopic technique suitable for very small liquid samples. It is based on measurements of the optical decay constant of laser intensity in a loop made of optical waveguide material. This decay constant changes as small liquid samples containing absorbing species are introduced into the loop. In this report, it is demonstrated that one can also obtain the optical decay constant using a continuous wave laser beam that is intensity modulated and then coupled into an optical fiber loop. The inherent exponential decay in the fiber loop introduces a phase shift of the light emitted from the loop with respect to the pumping beam. By measuring this phase shift, one can readily determine the concentration of the analyte introduced between the two fiber ends and a model is established to describe the relationship. It is demonstrated that this technique, dubbed phase-shift fiber-loop ring-down spectroscopy (PS-FLRDS), is well suited as an absorption detector for any flow system in which the optical absorption path is limited by the instrument architecture. By measuring the phase angle as a function of concentration of 1,1'-diethyl-4,4'-dicarbocyanine iodide in dimethyl sulfoxide, the detection limit was determined as approximately 6 microM for a 30-40-microm absorption path. A temporal resolution of approximately 100 ms was demonstrated by a rapid displacement of the solutions between the two fiber ends. Proof-of-principle use of the PS-FLRDS detection in capillary flow systems using a commercial four-way microcross established that the alignment of the fiber and the capillary can be made simple and effective, while retaining both a low detection limit and a fast response.  相似文献

A novel technique is proposed for measurement of the group delay (GD) and the differential group delay (DGD) of optical material, components, and fiber. This new method is based on continuous polarization modulation of the stimulus optical field as opposed to sequential polarization state switching used in the traditional phase shift method. A new complete derivation of the phase shift method, based on the modified Jones calculus of elementary matrices, is presented. The derivation reveals that the phase shift measurement actually depends on all eight elementary parameters that represent DGD and optical frequency derivatives of polarization-dependent loss (PDL). Thus, the new expression for the phase shift includes the combined effect of PDL and DGD. The proposed method is evaluated by measuring a section of polarization-maintaining fiber and a 50 km length of single-mode fiber over a wavelength range from 1530 to 1610 nm. Measurements of DGD in a long single-mode fiber are shown to be highly insensitive to environmentally induced GD drift.  相似文献

We propose a simple white-light interferometric method of measuring a one-dimensional rotation angle with use of an optical plane parallel plate of standard refractive index. The phase change of the interference pattern of the interferometer during the rotation of the flat plate of known refractive index and thickness placed in one of the interferometer's arms is used for determination of the rotation angle. This method has been demonstrated for an accurate angle measurement over the angle range from 0° to 40° within a maximum uncertainty of 0.057°.  相似文献

A new type of demodulation system for low-coherence interferometric sensors based on highly birefringent fibers is presented. The optical path delay introduced by the sensor is compensated in four detection channels by quartz crystalline plates of appropriate thickness. The system can be used to decode a single-point sensor with a resolution of 2.5 x 10(-3) or two serially multiplexed sensors with decreased resolution. In a multiplexed configuration each sensor is served by two detection channels. By tilting the quartz plates, we can tune the initial phase shift between interference signals in successive channels to differ by pi/8 or pi/4, respectively, for a single-point or a multiplexed configuration. We transferred the sinusoidal intensity changes into digital pulses by appropriate electronic processing, which eventually allows for an unambiguous phase-shift measurement with a resolution of 1/8 or 1/4 of an interference fringe. The system performance for the measurement of hydrostatic pressure changes and simultaneous changes of hydrostatic pressure and temperature is demonstrated. The pressure sensors are based on side-hole fiber to ensure high sensitivity and an operation range of 2.4 MPa. A new configuration for temperature compensation of hydrostatic pressure sensors is proposed, which is better suited for dynamic pressure measurements. In this configuration the sensing and compensating fibers are located in the same compartment of the sensor housing.  相似文献

Based on the phenomena of Brewster's angle and the principles of common-path heterodyne interferometry, we present an optical method for measuring the optical rotation angle and the refractive index of a chiral solution simultaneously in one optical configuration. A heterodyne light beam and a circularly polarized heterodyne light beam are separately guided to project onto the interface of a semicircle glass and a chiral solution. One of the beams is transmitted through the solution, and the other is reflected near Brewster's angle at the interface. Then the two beams pass through polarization components respectively for interference. The phase differences of the two interference signals used to determine the rotation angle and the refractive index become very high with the proper azimuth angles of some polarization components, hence achieving an accurate rotational angle and a refractive index. The feasibility of the measuring method was demonstrated by our experimental results. This method should bear the merits of high accuracy, short sample medium length, and simpler operational endeavor.  相似文献

We describe a quantitative method for measuring the phase of a propagating wave field in three dimensions by use of a scanning optical-fiber interferometer. Because phase modulation in the reference arm is exploited, this technique is insensitive to large variations in the intensity of the field being studied and is therefore highly suitable for measurement of phase within spatially confined optical beams. It uses only a single detector and is not reliant on lock-in electronics. The technique is applied to the measurement of the near field of a cleaved optical fiber and is shown to produce results in good agreement with theory.  相似文献
