Corrosion of steel under the defected coating in near-neutral pH solution was investigated by localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) measurements. The LEIS response is dependent on the size of the defect. For small defects, e.g., less than 200 μm in diameter, localized corrosion process and mechanism of steel, as indicated by the measured LEIS plots, change with time. The diffusion process dominates the interfacial corrosion reaction, which is due to the block effect of the deposited corrosion product combined with the geometrical factor of a large coating thickness/defect width ratio. In the presence of a big defect, e.g., up to 1000 μm, the LEIS responses measured at the defect are always featured by a coating impedance in the high-frequency range and an interfacial corrosion reaction in the low-frequency range. The block effect of corrosion product does not apply due to the relatively open geometry. Conventional EIS measurements on a macroscopic-coated electrode reflect the “averaged” impedance results from both coating and defect. The information of the localized electrochemical corrosion processes and mechanisms at the small defect is lost, and the coating impedance information is “averaged” out when a big defect is contained. LEIS measurement provides an essential technique to characterize microscopically the local electrochemical corrosion reaction of steel under the defected coating.  相似文献

Corrosion protection of steel by polyaniline blended coating   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Phosphate doped polyaniline was synthesized from aqueous phosphoric acid containing aniline by chemical oxidation method using ammonium persulphate as oxidant. The polymer was characterized by UV–vis and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques. Using this polymer, a paint with 1% polyaniline was prepared with epoxy binder. The corrosion resistant property of the polymer containing coating on steel was found out by open circuit potential measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic method in 0.1 N HCl, 0.1 N H3PO4 and 3% NaCl for a duration of 50 days. The coating was able to protect the steel more in 0.1 N H3PO4 and 3% NaCl media than in 0.1 N HCl.  相似文献

Corrosion protection of mild steel reinforcement offered by a newly developed epoxy based coating system containing inherently conducting polyaniline as one of the pigments has been studied. The synthesis of polyaniline and preparation of epoxy based coating system containing this polyaniline are described here. The corrosion resistant property of epoxy polyaniline system, coated on mild steel was evaluated by various techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potential time studies, cathodic disbondment test, anodic polarization study, salt spray test and chemical resistance test. The corrosion resistance of epoxy polyaniline coating system coated on reinforcement bars embedded in concrete was also studied by an accelerated time to cracking study. The formation of polyaniline was characterized using FTIR, UV, GPC, particle size analyzer and fineness studies. Electrochemical impedance studies reveal that the resistance of the coating decreased initially and then increased due to passivating ability of the polyaniline pigment. Based on the results of different techniques, it is found that epoxy coating with polyaniline pigment is effective in corrosion protection of steel in concrete environment.  相似文献

Alternating current (AC) corrosion of mild steel in marine environments under cathodic protection (CP) condition was studied. Electrochemical studies at the two protection potentials namely −780 and −1100 mV versus SCE were examined by different techniques. DC polarization study was carried out for mild steel in natural seawater and 18.5 g/L NaCl solution to evolve corrosion current density. The corrosion rate determination, pH of the end experimental solution and surface morphology of the mild steel specimens under the influence of different AC current densities were studied. The amount of leaching of iron into the solution was estimated using inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. All these techniques revealed that AC influences the corrosion of mild steel in the presence of marine environments even though CP was given. Surface micrographs revealed that spreading of red rust products noticed on the mild steel surface. At −780 mV CP, red rusts are visually seen when the AC source was above 10 A/m2 in both the media but red rusts are appeared after 20 A/m2 in the case of −1100 mV CP. Weight loss measurements coupled with surface examination and solution analysis is a effective tool to characterize and quantify the AC corrosion of mild steel in marine environments.  相似文献

In this work, corrosion of the coated 7A04 aluminum alloy with and without ultraviolet (UV) aging was studied by salt spray test, surface observation and localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Results demonstrated that, in the absence of UV aging, the impedance at coating defect increases with time, indicating the formation and accumulation of corrosion product, while the impedance in the adjacent coating decreases, which is attributed to the permeation of corrosive solution from defect and the resultant disbondment of coating. Upon UV aging, the impedance values at both defected area and the coating decrease. The coating contains a significant number of wrinkles. The wrinkles provide micro-pathways where the corrosive species, such as chloride ions, could permeate and reach the aluminum alloy surface for corrosion reaction. Different from the coating without UV aging where corrosion is limited to the defected area, a layer of corrosion product would not be formed to cover the defected area when coating experiences UV aging. Therefore, corrosion occurs continuously with time.  相似文献

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) has been used to characterise intact unpigmented epoxy coated mild steel with and without the application of cathodic protection (CP). Coated specimens were exposed to 0.6 M NaCL solution. Cathodic protection was applied at −0.78 V and −1.1 V (SCE). Coated specimens were also tested at Open Circuit Potential (OCP). The application of cathodic protection at −1.1 V was shown to affect the protective properties of the coating, causing the coating resistance to fall below the border line between fair and poor coating. The coating maintained a resistance in the order of 1 × 106 Ω cm2 when CP was applied at −0.78 V but a resistance of 1 × 105 Ω cm2 when CP was applied at −1.1 V. It was shown that water uptake by the coated specimens was considerably affected by the application of CP. The water uptake by the coated specimens was increased as a result of increasing the level of CP. The application of CP at −0.78 V, and −1.1 V was found to reduce the extent of corrosion on the coated specimens.  相似文献

In this work, corrosion protection of mild steel by a novel epoxy resin (EP)-based coating system containing polyaniline (PAni) as an anticorrosive agent was studied. The corrosion behavior of mild steel samples coated with an EP/PAni-EB (emeraldine base), EP/PAni-ES (emeraldine salt), EP/SPAN (PAni sulfonated), EP/PAni-fibers, EP/PhoZn (zinc phosphate), EP/ChroZn (zinc chromate) or EP/Charge was investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution. For this purpose, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were utilized. It was found that the addition of three forms of PAni—undoped, sulfonated and fibers—to the EP resin increased its corrosion protection efficiency.  相似文献

A solventborne alkyd composite coating containing modified montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclay was made on carbon steel, and its corrosion protection was investigated by in-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements in 3 wt.% NaCl solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated intercalation of the MMT sheets in the composite coating. Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated improved thermal stability of the composite coating due to the modified nanoclay. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and AFM examination revealed dispersion and also some aggregation of the nanoclay particles in the coating. In-situ AFM images show a stable coating surface at nano-scale during relative long time exposure in the NaCl solution, indicating an enhanced stability of the composite coating. The EIS results confirmed that the composite coating provides an enhanced barrier type corrosion protection for carbon steel in the corrosive solution, which could be attributed to the intercalated lamellar MMT sheets in the coating that block the defects and decrease the transport of water and corrosive species.  相似文献

Nano-composite coatings were formed by incorporating 3 wt% nano-ZnO in a polyurethane-based waterborne coating. The nano-ZnO based composite coatings were applied on standard phosphated steel panels by cathodic electrodeposition. The electrodeposited nano-composite coatings were then baked for 20 min at 165 °C. To investigate the corrosion resistance of the coatings, the coated panels were immersed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solutions for 2880 h (120 days). The improvement in corrosion performance of the composite coatings was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. It was found that the films containing nano-sized ZnO particles show a corrosion resistance of 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the neat films.  相似文献

In this research, we investigated the corrosion inhibition properties of polished steel plates (low carbon) coated with a polyaniline (emeraldine base form) blend with nylon 66 (termed PANi/Ny) via cast method with formic acid as the solvent. Polyaniline (PANi) was prepared chemically from aqueous solution using aniline (0.2 M) as a monomer and ammonium persulfate (0.2 M) as an oxidant. The polymer powder produced was changed into emeraldine base (EB) form after treatment with dilute ammonia solution (0.5 M) in order to do further processing. The corrosion experiments were performed in the open circuit, exposing samples to different aggressive and corrosive conditions (e.g., NaCl, HCl). To produce a good comparison, the corrosion study was performed on both polymer-coated and bare-steel samples. Corrosion monitoring was performed by simple immersion tests and determination of the concentration of iron ions and metal weight loss in test solutions. It was found that PANi/Ny coatings can provide an anodic protection against corrosive environments in which the metals are exposed. The corrosion rate for the polymer coated steel was significantly lower than the bare steel (~10–15 times).  相似文献

Organic coatings are often associated with cathodic protection to fight against the corrosion of metallic structures when immersed in seawater. However, cathodic protection leads to the generation of a strong alkalinity at the metal/coating interface, which causes the degradation of the coating. It is then necessary to develop a reliable method to evaluate the compatibility between organic coatings and the application of cathodic protection.

On one hand, cathodic disbonding tests (ASTM G-8 and G-80) can be driven with an artificial defect but this defect is mainly responsible for the electrochemical response. In addition, calcareous deposit rapidly forms onto the defect zone when cathodic protection is applied which can make difficult the evaluation of coating delamination. On the other hand, immersion of defect-free specimens requires very long testing periods (several months or even years) in order to detect the coating degradation.

In this work, an attempt to accelerate the coatings degradation by imposing a high temperature and thermal cycles were made in order to decrease the test-time duration. The influence of the applied cathodic potential was also investigated. The coating degradation was evaluated by EIS, considering the defect-free zone of coatings. It was shown that the coating degradation is faster in the presence of a defect and for high temperature (45 °C). Moreover, thermal cycles allow to greatly accelerate the degradation of defect-free coatings and then to compare the compatibility of both coatings with cathodic protection.  相似文献

The formation of zinc phosphate coating by cathodic electrochemical treatment and evaluation of its corrosion resistance is addressed. The corrosion behaviour of cathodically phosphated mild steel substrate in 3.5% sodium chloride solution exhibits the stability of these coatings, which lasts for a week's time with no red rust formation. Salt spray test convincingly proves the white rust formation in the scribed region on the painted substrates and in most part of the surface on unpainted surface. The protective ability of the zinc corrosion product formed on the surface of the coated steel is evidenced by the decrease in the loss in weight due to corrosion of the uncoated mild steel, when it is galvanically coupled with cathodically phosphated mild steel. Potentiodynamic polarization curves reveal that Ecorr shifts towards higher cathodic values (in the range of −1000 to −1100 mV versus SCE) compared to that of uncoated mild steel and conventionally phosphated mild steel substrates. The icorr value is also very high for these coatings. EIS studies reveal that zinc dissolution is the predominant reaction during the initial stages of immersion. Subsequently, the non-metallic nature of the coating is progressively increased due to the formation of zinc corrosion products, which in turn enables an increase in corrosion resistance with increase in immersion time. The zinc corrosion products formed may consist of zinc oxide and zinc hydroxychloride.  相似文献

A rectangular crevice assembly was used to investigate the effects of cathodic protection (CP) potential, bubbling CO2 and surface condition on the crevice corrosion of X70 steel under a disbonded coating. The solution within the crevice becomes more alkaline due to the reduction of dissolved O2. As a result, the potential of the steel reaches the protected potential range and thus the protection distance becomes longer when the applied CP potential is more negative. Potential drop (IR) mainly occurs in the vicinity of the opening. However, the introduction of CO2 into the solution prevents the formation of an alkaline environment but gives rise to an environment with a nearly neutral pH and a uniform potential distribution in the crevice. In addition, it is found that the pre-corrosion product layer significantly decreases the polarization rate in the crevice.  相似文献

The disbondment of protective organic coatings under excessive cathodic protection potentials is a widely reported coating failure mechanism. Traditional methods of evaluating cathodic disbondment are based on ex situ visual inspection of coated metal surfaces after being exposed to standard cathodic disbondment testing conditions for a long period of time. Although electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been employed as an effective means of evaluating various anti-corrosion properties of organic coatings; its application for assessing the cathodic disbondment resistance of coatings has not been sufficiently exploited. This paper reports an experimental study aimed at developing EIS into a tool for in situ measurement and monitoring of cathodic disbondment of coatings. A clear correlation between EIS parameters and the disbonded coating areas has been confirmed upon short term exposure of epoxy-coated steel electrodes to cathodic disbondment conditions; however the degree of this correlation was found to decrease with the extension of exposure duration. This observation suggests that EIS loses its sensitivity with the propagation of coating disbondment, and that in order to achieve quantitative determination of the coating cathodic disbondment localized EIS measurements are required to measure the parameters related to local disbonded areas.  相似文献

Increasing needs of very high resistance to cosmetic corrosion, of more extended service life and reduced maintenance costs for infrastructures, civil and industrial buildings open new fields of application for coil coated stainless steel. This paper describes the adhesion and corrosion properties of new coil coated stainless steel materials produced in industrial coil coating lines. The use of an electrochemical test (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) can give detailed information on the reactivity of the system and allow the performance of different substrates (AISI 409, 430, 316 and 304) coated with different polymers (polyvinylidene and polyester) to be compared. The results obtained show the interesting properties of this new class of coil coated products. The materials were tested for a long time (about 200 days) in an aggressive environment (3.5% sodium chloride solution) also in the presence of macrodefects. In particular, VIVINOX 430, 304 and 316 revealed no reactivity, corrosion or disbonding, thus supporting the expectancy of very long trouble free exposure also in very aggressive natural environments. (VIVINOX is the brand name of the AST (Acciali Speciali Terni) line of coil coated stainless steel.)  相似文献

Conducting polyaniline (Pani) was prepared in the presence of methane sulfonic acid (MeSA) as dopant by chemical oxidative polymerization. The Pani-MeSA polymer was characterized by FT-IR, UV-vis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and impedance spectroscopy. The polymer was dispersed in polyvinylacetate and coated on carbon steel samples by a dipping method. The electrochemical behavior and anticorrosion properties of the coating on carbon steel in 3% NaCl were investigated using open-circuit potential (OCP) versus time of exposure, and electrochemical techniques including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization and cyclic voltammetry (CV). During initial exposure, the OCP dropped about 0.35 V and the interfacial resistance increased several times, indicating a certain reduction of the polymer and oxidation of the steel surface. Later the OCP shifted to the noble direction and remained at a stable value during the exposure up to 60 days. The EIS monitoring also revealed the initial change and later stabilization of the coating. The stable high OCP and low coating impedance suggest that the conducting polymer maintains its oxidative state and provides corrosion protection for carbon steel throughout the investigated period. The polarization curves and CV show that the conducting polymer coating induces a passive-like behavior and greatly reduces the corrosion of carbon steel.  相似文献

This work aimed to address the issues that arise when cathodic protection is applied to a coated structure. The use of zinc chloride (ZnCl2) as a corrosion inhibitor was suggested; the idea was to bridge the weakly cross linked areas on the coating by depositing a film of zinc compounds in order to seal them from the corrosive environment.  相似文献

AISI 316L steel is often used in materials applied toward nuclear power but are subjected to pitting corrosion in a marine environment. In this study, (Cr, W, Al, Ti, Si)N multilayer coatings were deposited using multi-arc ion plating on the surface of non-nitrided and nitrided AISI 316L steel. The microstructure and corrosion resistance of four different systems were investigated, namely, (i) untreated AISI 316L steel, (ii) plasma nitrided (PN), (iii) coated on an untreated matrix (coating) only, and (iv) coated on nitrided (hybrid) specimens. The phase structures, morphologies, and compositions of the different specimens were characterized using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, Atomic Force Microscope, scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The results show that a thin CrWAlTiSiN multilayer coating, approximately 2.3 μm in thickness, is deposited on the surface of an ~12 μm nitrided layer. Potentio-dynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to evaluate the assessment of the electrochemical behavior in the natural seawater of China's Yellow Sea. The hybrid specimens exhibited excellent corrosion resistance compared to both the nitrided and coated specimens.  相似文献

Six formulations containing diacrylate monomers (from 89 to 92.5% (w/w)) as well as a phosphonated methacrylate monomer (from 1 to 10% (w/w)) were prepared. All formulations were UV-cured and the corrosion performance of the resulting coatings applied onto a steel substrate was assessed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was first shown that the coatings containing phosphonic acid methacrylate (MAPC1(OH)2) instead of methacrylate phosphonic dimethyl ester (MAPC1) presented higher corrosion protection related to the strong adhesive properties of phosphonic acid on the metal substrate. A minimum MAPC1(OH)2 content of 2.5% was determined to provide the highest impedance values (best efficiency). Then, a new bio-based compound, i.e. phosphonic acid-bearing oleic acid (phosphonated fatty acid), was synthesized and added as an inhibitor to the formulations. In the presence of this compound, the corrosion protection was notably improved. The beneficial effect of phosphonated fatty acid was explained by its inhibitive action at the steel/coating interface and by the improvement of the barrier properties.  相似文献

The paper reports a study on the behaviour of a cementitious conductive overlay anode used for cathodic protection (CP) of steel in concrete. The anode is made of nickel-coated carbon fibres in a cementitious mortar. Tests were carried out on concrete specimens with two layers of rebars that simulated reinforced concrete slabs. Anodic current densities in the range 10-100 mA/m2 with respect to the anode surface were imposed. Steel and anode potentials, as well as feeding voltage, were monitored. Four-hour decay and the distribution of current and potential were regularly measured. Galvanostatic polarisation tests were also carried out on the anode material immersed in saturated calcium hydroxide solutions. The maximum anode current output was evaluated. The effectiveness of patch repair of the anode, on areas damaged by excessive current output, is also discussed.  相似文献
