In this study, we attempted to advance the academic dialogue towards establishing TOC as a formal operations management theory, so it can continue improving practice. We link the component parts of the TOC and map the theoretical arrangement to the consensual definitional components and properties of a theory. Also, we examine whether TOC satisfy the virtues of a good theory (uniqueness, parsimony, conservation, generalisability, fecundity, internal consistency, empirical riskiness, and abstraction). Consequently, a practical outcome of our study stems from demonstrating the utility of the goodness criteria as a useful instrument for examining future theories in the field of operations. From a practitioner's standpoint, by establishing a strong theoretical foundation for TOC, we assist managers deploying it to gain better understanding of TOC elements and ultimately avoid implementation failures. Also, we increase the credibility of TOC in the eyes of senior executives. The study concludes by sketching new avenues for future research that have industrial relevance for successful TOC implementation efforts.  相似文献

There is growing concern that certain content within motor vehicle advertising may have a negative influence on driving attitudes and behaviours of viewers, particularly young people, and hence a negative impact on road safety. In response, many developed countries have adopted a self-regulatory approach to motor vehicle advertising. However, it appears that many motor vehicle advertisements in Australia and elsewhere are not compliant with self-regulatory codes. Using standard commercial advertising methods, we exposed three motor vehicle ads that had been the subject of complaints to the Australian Advertising Standards Board (ASB) to, N = 463, 14–55 year olds to assess the extent to which their perceptions of the content of the ads communicated themes that were contrary to the Australian self-regulatory code. All three ads were found to communicate messages contrary to the code (such as the vehicle's speed and acceleration capabilities). However, the ASB had upheld complaints about only one of the ads. Where motor vehicle advertising regulatory frameworks exist to guide motor vehicle advertisers as to what is and what is not acceptable in their advertising, greater efforts are needed to ensure compliance with these codes. One way may be to make it mandatory for advertisers to report consumer pre-testing of their advertising to ensure that undesirable messages are not being communicated to viewers.  相似文献

Thermal treatment before optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) measurement is an important step in all widely accepted OSL dating procedures used with quartz. This is a major constraint on the design of a portable luminescence instrument for estimating ages in the field. Preliminary experiments show that using a standard dating protocol without heating caused a 30-50% underestimation of equivalent dose. This underestimate arises mainly from OSL derived from the 110 degrees C thermoluminescence (TL) trap; because of the thermal instability of this trap, this OSL contribution is only present in unheated laboratory-regenerated signals, but not in the natural signal. An alternative to thermal pre-treatment is investigated, based on the mathematical separation of the stable dosimetry OSL signal from the total OSL; the latter is the sum of signals from several traps, including the 110 degrees C TL trap. Our results show consistency with dose estimates obtained using a standard measurement protocol including pre-heating.  相似文献

The rule of multiplicity of three according to which a nanotube has a metallic conductivity if the difference between the chiral indices is a multiple of three or behaves as a semiconductor or dielectric in the opposite case, is commonly used for interpretation of the physical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). This rule is shown to have limited validity, for example, for single-walled CNTs considered as strongly correlated systems in terms of the perturbation theory, in which the state of individual atoms is a zero approximation and the electron site-to-site hopping is regarded as a perturbation. Due to a strong Coulomb interaction between π-electrons at one site, the energy spectrum is divided into two Hubbard subbands resulting in conditions when the rule of multiplicity of three does not work.  相似文献

The well-known 80/20 Pareto principle and its refinement into “A”, “B”, and “C” categories give rise to a managerial methodology consisting of three steps: classification; differentiation; and resource allocation. This is an easy-to-implement and extremely effective methodology. It starts with the creation of “Pareto diagrams”, i.e. bar charts of attributes and their relative frequency, presented in descending order. Typically, Pareto diagrams are useful in that they provide managers with a summary of practical information, revealing critical attributes. However, sometimes a Pareto diagram is less informative than it might be, because the relative frequency is almost uniform. The objective of this article is to provide an analytical tool (an index) that employs the above-mentioned methodology to measure the closeness of empirical Pareto diagrams to an “ideal” Pareto diagram. Broadly speaking, Victorian scientific periodicals fell into one of two categories: specialist periodicals aimed at publishing original research for an audience of scientific researchers, or popularizing periodicals meant to share news about science with a broader readership. When astronomer Norman Lockyer founded Nature in 1869, he envisioned his new weekly as a member of the latter group. That vision resulted partly from his own wish to raise science's profile in Great Britain and partly from the interests of his publisher Macmillan and Company, which bankrolled Nature with its eye on eventual profit. This paper shows that the pressure for Nature to be a financial success shaped Lockyer's approach to editing and thus shaped Nature's content, leading the magazine to occupy an unusual space in the landscape of Victorian science publishing and placing unique burdens on its editor. Nature quickly moved away from Lockyer's initial vision of a popularizing magazine and became known as a periodical by and for researchers. The magazine's popularity among scientific researchers set it apart from its closest inspiration, the commercial weekly Chemical News. But in contrast to contemporary editors at learned society journals, such as George Gabriel Stokes at the Philosophical Transactions, Lockyer did not linger over the scientific details of Nature's papers. Instead, articles for Nature were usually either accepted or rejected immediately, with little editorial involvement shaping their scientific content. The difference between editing Nature and editing other research periodicals is clearly visible in the selection of Richard Gregory as Lockyer's successor in 1919. Most research periodicals selected eminent men of science as their editors-in-chief. Gregory, a science writer and long-time subeditor at Nature, did not lend scientific prestige to the masthead, but was eminently qualified to maintain Nature's distinctive content and its profitability for Macmillan and Company.  相似文献

A criterion-referenced standard is an important element of most successful professional testing programs. A growing body of evidence suggests that judge decisions are influenced by characteristics related to the normative experience of the individual judge (e.g. gender, age, etc.). This investigation used two health-care related boards to explore the effects of judge characteristics on the standards established. Two judge panels (composed of 26 and 30 members respectively) were used in a simplified Objective Standard Setting exercise to define examination cutoff points. Multi-faceted Rasch analyses were employed to detect and explore differences in judgment making. Significant but not necessarily consistent differences were found between panel judges on several examined characteristics. Results suggest that criterion-referenced standards defined by judge panels are inexorably connected to their normative experiences and are therefore wholly sample dependent. While stratification of judge panels is clearly an important element in defining standards, if they are ever to achieve the goals of Glaser (1963) and Majer (1962) including meaningful independence, more must be done to investigate these and other concerns. The case for the predictive validity of criterion-referenced standards has not thusfar been made in any convincing fashion.  相似文献

In this study we compare internationalization of academic journals in six fields of science. Internationalization was investigated through journals’ concentration on publishing papers from particular countries, relationship between the geographical distributions of editors and authors, and relationship between language of publication and the geographical distribution of papers. Having analyzed more than 1,000 journals we can state that social sciences literature in the fields considered is still nationally and linguistically fragmented more than natural sciences literature, but in some cases the gap is not so big. One of the consequences concerning research output assessment is that usefulness of international databases having national disparity in coverage is still limited in social sciences.  相似文献

To predict the success of an analgesic drug we have suggested a bibliometric indicator, the Top Journals Selectivity Index (TJSI) (Kissin, Scientometrics, 86:785–795, 2011). It represents the ratio (as %) between the number of all types of articles on a particular drug in the top 20 biomedical journals and the number of articles on that drug in all (>5,000) journals covered by Medline over the first 5 years after a drug’s introduction. For example, the highest TJSI score among analgesics was that of sumatriptan, the most successful drug for the treatment of migraine. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that TJSI may be used not only in the field of analgesics, but also for various other categories of drugs. The study tested two hypotheses. First, the difference between the most successful and less successful drugs in any pharmacological class can be reliably detected by TJSI. Second, drugs with TJSI indicators as high as that of sumatriptan can be found among other pharmacological classes as well. Drugs from various pharmacological classes approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) during the 10-year period, 1980–1989, were used in this study. Two groups of 10 drugs were selected to test the first hypothesis. One group included the most successful (breakthrough) drugs; the other included less successful drugs matched with the breakthrough drugs according to mechanism of action. The difference between the two groups was compared using three publication indices: the TJSI, the number of all types of articles on a drug in journals presented by Medline (AJI), and the number of articles covering only randomized controlled trials (RCT). It was found that TJSI can detect the difference between the two groups of drugs better than the two other indices. TJSI detected the difference between a breakthrough drug and its less successful counterpart at least 69% of the time with 95% confidence. With the other two indices the difference was not distinguishable from random chance. Some of the breakthrough drugs (zidovudine, omeprazole, lovastatin) have TSJIs as high or even higher than that of sumatriptan (19.2 vs. 23.0, 21.4, and 20.6, respectively). In conclusion, TJSI can be useful not only in the field of analgesics, but also with drugs belonging to other pharmacological classes.  相似文献

This article evaluates the propensity of firms to apply for R&D public grants, their capacity for obtaining subsides and how these relate to the firm age. This analysis is particularly relevant in understanding why young firms may be more or less successful in their application for public subsidies. Using data from an extensive database of 19,236 firms in Catalonia, we estimate a maximum likelihood probit model with sample selection. Our results show that firm age does not exert a significant direct impact on the application propensity in R&D public call, but younger firms tend to show a larger propensity to receive an R&D subsidy. They also show that firm age exerts a moderating role through different internal resources. They highlight the need to design R&D public policies that explicitly favour applications by young firms to help overcome their obstacles to innovation.  相似文献

Collaboration is a major factor in the knowledge and innovation creation in emerging science-driven industries where the technology is rapidly changing and constantly evolving, such as nanotechnology. The objective of this work is to investigate the role of individual scientists and their collaborations in enhancing the knowledge flows, and consequently the scientific production. The methodology involves two main phases. First, the data on all the nanotechnology journal publications in Canada was extracted from the SCOPUS database to create the co-authorship network, and then employ statistical data mining techniques to analyze the scientists’ research performance and partnership history. Also, a questionnaire was sent directly to the researchers selected from our database seeking the predominant properties that make a scientist sufficiently attractive to be selected as a research partner. In the second phase, an agent-based model using Netlogo has been developed to study the network in its dynamic context where several factors could be controlled. It was found that scientists in centralized positions in such networks have a considerable positive impact on the knowledge flows, while loyalty and strong connections within a dense local research group negatively affect the knowledge transmission. Star scientists appear to play a substitutive role in the network and are selected when the usual collaborators, i.e., most famous, and trustable partners are scarce or missing.  相似文献
