A population of terminals communicating with a central station over a packet-switched multiple access radio channel is investigated with regard to multiple access control schemes. The authors describe the ICMA-DR, which is an advanced idle-signal casting multiple access (ICMA) scheme characterized by data slot reservation. This improved central controlled multiple-access scheme for packet transmission in terrestrial radio communications is evaluated in terms of throughput traffic, throughput delay characteristics, and handling capacity. It is shown that the throughput characteristics of ICMA-DR are superior than those of ICMA or slotted ALOHA when a packet for data slot reservation is relatively short in comparison to that for upward data. Thus, it is shown that ICMA-DR is suitable for the packet radio multiple-access scheme, especially in the case where fading packet error occurs frequently and ordered traffic is heavy. The ICMA-DR scheme has been utilized for the access control channel of NTT's new 800-MHz-band high-capacity land mobile communication system since the Spring of 1988  相似文献

A new medium access control (MAC) protocol for mobile wireless communications is presented and investigated. We explore, via an extensive simulation study, the performance of the protocol when integrating voice, video and data packet traffic over a wireless channel of high capacity (referring to an indoor microcellular environment). Depending on the number of video users admitted into the system, our protocol varies: a) the request bandwidth dedicated to resolving the voice users contention, and b) the probability with which the base station grants information slots to voice users, in order to preserve full priority for video traffic. We evaluate the maximum voice capacity and mean access delay, as well as the aggregate channel throughput, for various voice and video load conditions, and the maximum voice capacity, aggregate channel throughput and average data message delays, for various video, voice and data load conditions. As proven by the comparison with a recently introduced efficient MAC scheme (DPRMA), when integrating voice and video traffic our scheme obtains higher voice capacity and aggregate channel throughput. When integrating all three traffic types, our scheme achieves high aggregate channel throughput in all cases of traffic load.  相似文献

A multiaccess protocol suitable for packet satellite broadcast channels is introduced in this paper. The proposed protocol, called diversity reservation ALOHA (DRA) combines the essential features of announced retransmission random access (ARRA). diversity ALOHA, and a reservation scheme with a slotted ALOHA reservation channel to achieve the goals of improved delay-throughput characteristics and high channel utilization. Two versions of DRA protocols are analyzed. In scheme 1, called DRA with reservation cleared (DRA-RC), no global queue information is required for a user to access the channel. In this version, even a successful transmission of reservation requests will be cleared from the system if it causes overflow. The second scheme, called DRA with reservation delayed (DRA-RD), establishes a global queue distributed at users' terminals, so that users with successful transmission of reservation requests are assured of access rights although transmission may be delayed to later fames. Important system performance measures, such as activity-factor-throughput characteristics, for DRA-RC and DRA-RD are compared with those of ARRA. Examples of numerical results show that with system parameters properly chosen, substantial increases in attainable channel utilization are possible. Furthermore, the use of diversity for reservation allows a smaller packet delay especially under light traffic conditions. The analysis is validated in light of the simulation results.  相似文献

We consider a packet switched wireless network where each cell's communication channel is shared among packet voice sources. In this paper, we present a method for the design and analysis of wireless cells using a reservation random access (RRA) scheme for packet access control. This scheme is integrated with a call admission control procedure. We model the state process of a single cell as a vector Markov chain. We compute the steady state distribution of the Markov chain. This result is used to calculate the packet dropping probability and the call blocking probability. By setting limits on maximum permissible levels for the call blocking probability and the packet dropping probability, we obtain the Erlang capacity of a single cell, with and without hand-off traffic. For an illustrative RRA scheme, the Erlang capacity of a single cell is shown to be about twice that attained by a comparable fixed assigned TDMA scheme. We show that a cellular network using this RRA scheme and which applies can be no blocking of hand-off calls, exhibits similar call capacity levels. This work is supported by a University of California MICRO and Pacific-Bell Grant No. 94-107.  相似文献

The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) offers performance guaranteed packet data services to mobile users over wireless frequency-division duplex links with time division multiple access, and core packet data networks. This paper presents a dynamic adaptive guaranteed Quality-of-Service (QoS) provisioning scheme over GPRS wireless mobile links by proposing a guaranteed QoS media access control (GQ-MAC) protocol and an accompanying adaptive prioritized-handoff call admission control (AP-CAC) protocol to maintain GPRS QoS guarantees under the effect of mobile handoffs. The GQ-MAC protocol supports bounded channel access delay for delay-sensitive traffic, bounded packet loss probability for loss-sensitive traffic, and dynamic adaptive resource allocation for bursty traffic with peak bandwidth allocation adapted to the current queue length. The AP-CAC protocol provides dynamic adaptive prioritized admission by differentiating handoff requests with higher admission priorities over new calls via a dynamic multiple guard channels scheme, which dynamically adapts the capacity reserved for dealing with handoff requests based on the current traffic conditions in the neighboring radio cells. Integrated services (IntServ) QoS provisioning over the IP/ATM-based GPRS core network is realized over a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) architecture, and mobility is supported over the core network via a novel mobile label-switching tree (MLST) architecture. End-to-end QoS provisioning over the GPRS wireless mobile network is realized by mapping between the IntServ and GPRS QoS requirements, and by extending the AP-CAC protocol from the wireless medium to the core network to provide a unified end-to-end admission control with dynamic adaptive admission priorities.  相似文献

In this paper, a medium access control protocol is proposed for integrated voice and data services in wireless local networks. Uplink channels for the proposed protocol are composed of time slots with multiple spreading codes per slot based on slotted code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. The proposed protocol uses spreading code sensing and reservation schemes. This protocol gives higher access priority to delay‐sensitive voice traffic than to data traffic. The voice terminal reserves an available spreading code to transmit multiple voice packets during a talkspurt. On the other hand, the data terminal transmits a packet without making a reservation over one of the available spreading codes that are not used by voice terminals. In this protocol, voice packets do not come into collision with data packets. The numerical results show that this protocol can increase the system capacity for voice service by applying the reservation scheme. The performance for data traffic will decrease in the case of high voice traffic load because of its low access priority. But it shows that the data traffic performance can be increased in proportion to the number of spreading codes.  相似文献

Based on the requirements of beyond 3G mobile communication systems, the access network architecture and media access control technique for B3G systems are studied. The proposed novel access network architecture, which can reduce network complexity and improve system performance, is introduced. Centralized mini-slot packet reservation multiple access (CMPRMA), based on OFDMA, is proposed, which not only can inherit the advantages of MPRMA and support real-time traffic well, but can also supply the resource reservation scheme for data traffic and support transmission for data traffic efficiently  相似文献

A bandwidth reservation multiple access scheme(BRMA) is proposed to resolve contention and assignbandwidth among multiple users trying to gain access toa common channel such as in mobile users contending for resources in an ATM-based cellular networkor a wireless local area network (LAN) with shortpropagation delays. The protocol is best suited tosupport variable-bit-rate (VBR) traffic that exhibits high temporal fluctuations. Each mobile user isconnected end-to-end to another user over virtualchannels via the base station that is connected to thewired ATM B-ISDN network. The channel capacity is modeled as a time frame with a fixed duration. Each frame starts with minislots, to resolve contentionand reserve bandwidth, followed by data-transmissionslots. Every contending user places a request for data slots in one of the minislots. If therequest is granted by the base station through adownlink broadcast channel, the user then startstransmission in the assigned slot(s). The number ofassigned slots varies according to the required qualityof service (QoS), such as delay and packet lossprobability. A speech activity detector is utilized inorder to indicate the talkspurts to avoid wastingbandwidth. Due to its asynchronous nature, BRMA is ratherinsensitive to the burstiness of the traffic. Since theassignment of the minislots is deterministic, therequest channels are contention-free and the data channels are collision-free. Hence, in spite ofthe overhead (minislots) in each frame, BRMA provideshigher throughput than Packet Reservation MultipleAccess (PRMA) for the same QoS, especially for high-speed systems. A better delay performance is alsoachieved for data traffic compared to Slotted Alohareservation-type protocol PRMA. In addition, BRMAperforms better in terms of bandwidth efficiency thanthe conventional TDMA or the Dynamic TDMA, wherespeech activity detectors are very difficult toimplement.  相似文献

Cellular packet data systems require medium access control (MAC) protocols that allow flexible resource allocation on both the uplink and the downlink. The overhead introduced for managing MAC functions should be minimized, and control fields should be well protected in order to provide robustness to channel errors. The IS-136 TDMA digital control channel specifies shared channel feedback (SCF) procedures and fields for managing uplink resources. However, the SCF mechanism is not well suited to long packet data transactions. We describe a simple and robust packet channel feedback (PCF) mechanism for an IS-136 based TDMA packet data channel by identifying the minimal set of functions and fields required to manage both contention access and reserved access. The proposed scheme has unambiguous state transitions and better performance under error conditions. The PCF scheme provides considerable flexibility in assigning bandwidth to multiple users, and allows the efficient scheduling of contention and reservation opportunities on each subchannel without wasted slots  相似文献

Mobile satellite systems (MSSs) are expected to play a significant role in providing users with communication services worldwide. In such a context, low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations seem to be a good solution to attain a global coverage and to allow the use of low-power lightweight mobile terminals. This paper analyzes the performance of a novel medium access control (MAC) scheme suitable for applications in LEO-MSSs, named packet reservation multiple access with hindering states (PRMA-HS), that has been derived by proper modifications of the well-known PRMA protocol. We envisage a mixed traffic with voice sources and data sources with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. The good behavior of the proposed PRMA-HS scheme is validated by extensive comparisons with the classical PRMA protocol. Finally, it is shown that PRMA-HS efficiently supports integrated voice and data traffic in LEO-MSSs  相似文献

In a wireless system that supports multimedia services, each traffic requires different quality of service (QoS) at both communication on radio links and connection admission. We initially derive the uplink capacity satisfying the QoS constraint on radio links in a multiclass multicode code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system. Based on the derived capacity, the number of channel elements, which is one of the system resources, is determined. Then, we define the QoS parameters associated with connection processes. To guarantee the defined QoS at the connection level, under given channel elements, we propose a channel-assignment scheme with dynamic priority adjustment (DPA). The proposed scheme gives multipriority to different traffic classes. Real-time classes can preempt non-real-time classes with restricted preemptive priority. Such restriction is regulated by preemption-free code channels and a buffer threshold for non-real-time classes. Among real-time classes, different priorities are assigned to each traffic class by code reservation parameters. These multipriority parameters are dynamically adjusted in order to guarantee different QoS requirements. We analyze the DPA scheme by the matrix-geometric method, and evaluate the performance of each traffic class. The results show that the proposed scheme flexibly guarantees QoS depending on traffic loading condition and achieves high channel utilization.  相似文献

Packet reservation multiple access (PRMA) is portrayed as a multimedia packet multiplexer conveying speech, data and video signals, which ensures that the slot occupancy of conventional time division multiple access (TDMA) links is approximately doubled. In addition to 20 speech users the 20 slot 720 kbit/s scheme presented supported 20 data users and up to seven video users, while maintaining a slot occupancy in excess of 80%.<>  相似文献

A well designed Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for wireless networks should provide an efficient mechanism to share the limited bandwidth resources, and satisfy the diverse and usually contradictory Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of each traffic class. In this paper a new MAC protocol for next generation wireless communications is presented and investigated. The protocol uses a combined Packet Discard/Forward Error Correction scheme in order to efficiently integrate MPEG-4 videoconference packet traffic with voice, SMS data and web packet traffic over a noisy wireless channel of high capacity. Our scheme achieves high aggregate channel throughput in all cases of traffic load, while preserving the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of each traffic type, and is shown to clearly outperform DPRMA, another efficient MAC protocol proposed in the literature for multimedia traffic integration over wireless networks. The paper presents a high performance wireless access and switching system for interconnecting mobile users in a community of interest. Radio channel and time slot assignments are made on user demand, while the switch operations are controlled by a scheduling algorithm designed to maximize utilization of system resources and optimize performance. User requests and assignments are carried over a low-capacity control channel, while user information is transmitted over the traffic channels. The proposed system resolves both the multiple access and the switching problems and allows a direct connection between the mobile end users. The system also provides integration of voice and data traffic in both the access link and the switching equipment. The “movable boundary” approach is used to achieve dynamic sharing of the channel capacity between the voice calls and the data packets. Performance analysis based on a discrete time Markov model, carried out for the case of optimum scheduling yields call blocking probabilities and data packet delays. Performance results indicate that data packets may be routed via the exchange node with limited delays, even with heavy load of voice calls. Also the authors have proposed scheduling algorithms that may be used in implementing this system  相似文献

The unused time slots in a primary time division multiple access (TDMA) network are regarded as the potential channel access opportunities for secondary users (SUs) in cognitive radio (CR). In this paper, we investigate the medium access control protocols that enable SUs to access a common TDMA channel with primary users (PUs). The primary traffic is assumed to follow a Bernoulli random process. A two‐state Markov chain is used to model the secondary traffic, and two different scenarios are considered. The first scenario assumes that the secondary packet arrivals are independent and follow a Bernoulli random process and a cognitive carrier sensing multiple access (Cog‐CSMA) protocol is proposed. A Rayleigh fading channel is considered in evaluating Cog‐CSMA, and its throughput expression is derived in this paper. The second scenario assumes that the packet arrivals follow a correlated packet arrival process and a cognitive packet reservation multiple access (Cog‐PRMA) protocol is proposed. A Markov chain is used to model the different system states in Cog‐PRMA and derive the throughput. Numerical results show that the Cog‐CSMA and Cog‐PRMA protocols achieve the objective of supporting secondary transmissions in a TDMA network without interfering the PUs' transmissions and improve the network bandwidth utilization. A novel network-assisted (signal processing based) medium access control (MAC) protocol known as the bit-map-assisted dynamic queue (BMDQ) is presented. The protocol is explicitly designed for a wireless slotted system with multiple packet reception (MPR) capability. In the proposed protocol, the traffic in the channel is viewed as a flow of transmission periods (TPs). Each TP has a bit-map (BM) slot at the beginning followed by a data transmission period (DP). The BM slot is reserved for user detection so that accurate knowledge of the active user set (AUS) can be obtained. Then, given the knowledge of the AUS and the channel MPR matrix, the number of users that can access the channel simultaneously in each packet slot in the DP is chosen to maximize the conditional throughput of every packet slot. Compared with other conventional and network-assisted MAC protocols, the proposed BMDQ protocol yields better performance. Its maximum steady-state throughput is close to the channel MPR capacity, and it can achieve the same throughput with lower traffic load and smaller delay. Performance issues are investigated analytically and via simulations.  相似文献

We investigate a new application of the well-known spread spectrum code division multiple access (SS-CDMA) techniques to multimedia services related to the development of the next-generation wireless mobile networks interconnecting with a wireline ATM-based broadband network. Such services allow users to share novel multimedia applications without any geographical restrictions. However, since the mobile radio channel has a fixed limited bandwidth, the traditional SS-CDMA system may not be sufficient to accommodate the variable bit rate (VBR) multimedia services requested by multiple mobile users simultaneously. Moreover, the traffic load at the base station can change dynamically due to the time-varying throughput requirement of these requested multimedia services. To tackle this difficulty, a multicode CDMA (MC-CDMA) technique is proposed to provide multirate multimedia services by varying the number of spreading codes assigned to each user in order to meet its throughput requirement. In MC-CDMA, a spreading code can be used to transmit information at a basic bit rate. Users (video or data) who need higher transmission rates can use multiple codes in parallel. Meanwhile, the maximum available number of codes in the MC-CDMA system is still limited. Hence, a cost-effective dynamic code allocation scheme has then been proposed to dynamically assign an appropriate number of codes to each user for achieving the maximum resource utilization for multiuser multimedia services via the mobile radio channel. Finally, a number of real multimedia titles generated from the well-known MacroMind Director are conducted to evaluate performance  相似文献

Contention-TDMA protocol: performance evaluation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A hybrid access protocol known, as contention time-division multiple access (C-TDMA), is presented and analyzed in a radio cellular multiuser system scenario. C-TDMA shows some features of contention-based (slotted-ALOHA) and reservation-based (packet reservation multiple access, PRMA) protocols. It has been recommended for use in the uplink of future European multimedia distribution systems. A simple Markov model is proposed to describe C-TDMA behavior. A complete statistical analysis of the model has been made in order to evaluate the performance of the protocol. However, due to the long computation time required in the presence of a large number of users, a simpler approach known as equilibrium point analysis (EPA) is used. Moreover, on the basis of the EPA analysis and the C-TDMA design parameters, a fast algorithm has been developed to improve the achievable throughput of C-TDMA. Results in terms of throughput and delay under variable traffic conditions indicate that C-TDMA is able to grant optimum throughput/delay figures for typical multiuser systems. Moreover, for a digital speech scenario, a performance comparison with PRMA demonstrates that C-TDMA yields equivalent performance to PRMA in terms of number of users supported by the system with a limited packet dropping rate  相似文献
