Al2O3/SiC ceramic composites with different SiC contents have been prepared by powder metallurgy at 1600 °C for 120 min at 30 MPa pressure. The effect of second phase particles on the microstructure and mechanical properties of composites have been studied. The results show that SiC particle has a significant impact on the matrix subjected to residual stress, and on the microstructure of the composites as well. The average grain size of alumina matrix decreases as the SiC particle content increases. Simultaneously, it has been found that the mechanical properties of the material are significantly enhanced in comparison with monolithic Al2O3. The highest strength and toughness are obtained when the SiC content is 15 vol%, and the values are 1237 MPa and 5.68 MPa m1/2, respectively. The mechanisms of strengthening and toughening have been discussed.  相似文献

The zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) composites have been widely used as an engineering material in many application areas due to their remarkable mechanical properties. However, the fracture toughness of ZTA does not generally meet the requirements of aerospace, machinery and other fields. In this study, the SiC whiskers (SiCw) have been incorporated in the ZTA composites to improve the fracture toughness. The SiCw employed in this study mainly consist of the β phase, with a small fraction of the α phase. The effect of the SiCw content and sintering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the SiCw-ZTA (ZASw) composites has been systematically studied. The incorporation of SiCw is noted to reduce the density of the ZASw composites. On enhancing the SiCw content, the Vickers hardness and fracture toughness of the composites initially decrease, followed by an increase. However, the flexural strength of the composites increases with the SiCw content. At a SiCw content of 10.0 vol %, the strength, hardness and toughness are observed to reach the maximum values. On enhancing the sintering temperature, the strength and hardness of the composites are observed to remain nearly constant, while the toughness of the composites is increased.  相似文献

In the present work, the influence of sintering temperature and particle size of pristine ZrC particles on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal properties of ZrC/ZTA ceramic composites are investigated. Specimens consolidated by spark plasma sintering at different sintering temperatures from 1500 °C to 1800 °C. XRD results revealed that α-Al2O3, t-ZrO2, ZrC, and a small quantity of m-ZrO2 phases are present in the composites. The microstructure of μm-ZrC/ZTA is found to be more compact than nm-ZrC/ZTA composites. There is an apparent increase in the average grain size with the increase in temperature. From the micrographs of fracture surfaces, step-wise transgranular fracture structures are observed. Relative densities and Vickers hardness are in proportion to sintering temperature from 1500 °C to 1700 °C. The maximum Vickers hardness of 1919 HV1 is obtained for μm-ZrC/ZTA composites. Indentation fracture toughness displays a gradual rise when the temperature rises from 1500 °C to 1700 °C, then deteriorates at 1800 °C for both nm-ZrC/ZTA and μm-ZrC/ZTA ceramic composites. The maximum fracture toughness values for nm-ZrC/ZTA and μm-ZrC/ZTA are 6.75 MPa m1/2 and 6.83 MPa m1/2, respectively. The thermal conductivity of the specimens decreased gradually as the temperature increases from 100 °C to 1000 °C. The obtained results indicated that the 1700 °C is the optimized sintering temperature where μm-ZrC/ZTA composites have excellent performance on microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal properties than nm-ZrC/ZTA composites.  相似文献

Zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramics with high mechanical properties were sintered by hot-pressing method using SiC particles (SiCp) and SiC whiskers (SiCw) as the reinforcing agents simultaneously. The influences of sintering temperature, SiCp, and SiCw contents on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ZTA ceramics were investigated. It was found that both SiCp and SiCw could contribute to grain refinement significantly and promote the mechanical properties of the ceramics. However, the excess addition of SiCp or SiCw led to the formation of pores with large sizes and degraded the mechanical properties instead. When 13 wt% SiCp was introduced, the maximum flexural strength of 1180.0 MPa and fracture toughness of 15.9 MPa·m1/2 were obtained, whereas the maximum flexural strength of 1314.0 MPa and fracture toughness of 14.7 MPa·m1/2 were achieved at 20 wt% SiCw. Interestingly, the simultaneous addition of SiCp and SiCw could further improve the mechanical properties, and the highest flexural strength of 1334.0 MPa and fracture toughness of 16.0 MPa·m1/2 were achieved at a SiCw/SiCp ratio of 16/4. The reinforcement mechanisms in the ceramics mainly included the phase transformation toughening of ZrO2, the crack deflection and bridging of SiCp and SiCw, and the pull-out of SiCw.  相似文献

In this study, the high-content SiCnw reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composites (SiCnw/SiC CMC) were successfully fabricated by hot pressing β-SiC and sintering additive (Al2O3-Y2O3) with boron nitride interphase modification SiCnw. The effects of sintering additive content and mass fraction (5–25 wt%) of SiCnw on the density, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. The results showed that with the increase of sintering additives from 10 wt% to 12 wt%, the relative density of the SiCnw/SiC CMC increased from 97.3% to 98.9%, attributed to the generated Y3Al5O12 (YAG) liquid phase from the Al2O3-Y2O3 that promotes the rearrangement and migration of SiC grains. The comprehensive performance of the obtained composite with 15 wt% SiCnw possessed the optimal flexural strength and fracture toughness of 524 ± 30.24 MPa and 12.39 ± 0.49 MPa·m1/2, respectively. Besides, the fracture mode of the composites with 25 wt% SiCnw content revealed a pseudo-plastic fracture behavior. It concludes that the 25 wt% SiCnw/SiC CMC was toughened by the fiber pull-outs, debonding, bridging, and crack deflection that can consume plenty of fracture energy. The strategy of SiC nanowires worked as a main bearing phase for the fabrication of SiC/SiC CMC providing critical information for understanding the mechanical behavior of high toughness and high strength SiC nanoceramic matrix composites.  相似文献

Unidirectional SiCf/SiC composites (UD SiCf/SiC composites) with excellent mechanical properties were successfully fabricated by a modified PIP method which involved the preparation of film-like matrix containing carbon layer with a low concentration PCS solution followed by the rapid densification of composites with a high concentration PCS solution. Carbon layers were in-situ formed and alternating with SiC layers in the as-received matrix. The unique microstructure endows the composites with appropriate interfacial bonding state, good load transfer ability of interphase and matrix and load bearing ability of fiber, and great crack deflection capacity, which ensures the synergy of high strength and toughness of composites. It is also found that the fiber volume fraction in the preform makes a non-negligible effect on the distribution of interphase and matrix, of which the reasonable adjustment can be utilized to optimize the mechanical properties of composites. Compared with the composites only using high concentration PCS solution, the UD SiCf/SiC composites prepared by the modified PIP method exhibit superior mechanical properties. Ultrahigh flexural strength of 1318.5 ± 158.3 MPa and fracture toughness of 47.6 ± 5.6 MPa·m1/2 were achieved at the fiber volume fraction of 30%.  相似文献

Carbon fibre reinforced CVI-SiC matrix (Cf/SiC) composite is well known for its superior properties such as low density, high specific modulus, high fracture toughness, and high temperature mechanical properties. In the present work, 2.5-Directional Cf/SiC composites with (PyC/SiC) n=4 multilayer interface having two different thicknesses with a density of ~2.1 g cm-3 are prepared through isobaric isothermal chemical vapour infiltration technique. High temperature tensile properties of the prepared composites with and without Si-B-C seal coating are studied and the results are presented. Samples prepared without seal coat exhibited a KICof ~ 30 MPa m1/2, and tensile strength of ≥200 MPa at room temperature. Si-B-C seal coated Cf/SiC composites has shown significant increase (28%) in high temperature tensile strength at 1200 °C and 1500 °C respectively compared to uncoated composites. Microstructural observations, XRD, and XPS studies support the observed thermomechanical behaviour of these composites at 1200 °C and 1500 °C.  相似文献

To tailor the fiber–matrix interface of SiC nanowires-reinforced SiC (SiCnw/SiC) ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for improved mechanical properties, SiC nanowires were coated with BN and pyrolytic carbon (PyC) compound coatings prepared by the dip-coating process in boric acid and urea solution and the pyrolysis of phenolic resin. SiCnw/SiC CMC with PyC/BN interfaces were fabricated by reactive melt infiltration (RMI) at 1680°C for 1 h. The influences of phenolic resin content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the CMC were investigated. The results showed that the flexural strength and fracture toughness reach the maximum values of 294 MPa and 4.74 MPa m1/2 as the phenolic resin content was 16 and 12 wt%, respectively. The displacement–load curve of the sample exhibited a gradient drop with increasing phenolic resin content up to 12 wt%. The results demonstrated that the PyC/BN compound coatings could play the role of protecting the SiCnw from degradation as well as improving the more moderate interfacial bonding strengths during the RMI.  相似文献

SiC ceramics, for the first time, were toughened with nano scale carbon nanotubes (CNTs) buckypapers and micro scale carbon fibers within this work. The CNTs buckypapers were alternately laminated with carbon fiber fabrics (Cfb) to a preform by needle punched in Z-direction. Afterwards, the buckypaper-Cfb/SiC composites were obtained by infiltrating of SiC into the as-laminated preform via chemical vapor infiltration (CVI). Some effects of different lamination thickness and CVI times on the mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. Results showed that the maximum flexural strength and work of fracture of the buckypaper-Cfb/SiC composites reached 262.4 MPa and 4.15 kJ m−2, respectively, when the thickness reached about 3.50 mm. Compared to Cfb/SiC composites without buckypapers, the strength and work of fracture of the buckypaper-Cfb/SiC composites increased by 19.8% and 111.7%, respectively. Densified composites can be obtained after CVI for 8 times. A main factor affecting the mechanical properties of buckypaper-Cfb/SiC composites is the degree of densification. Introducing nano scale CNTs and micro scale carbon fibers reaches a multiscale co-toughening effect. Meanwhile, a sandwich structure ceramic matrix composite with high-CNT concentration was obtained in this work.  相似文献

This study reports on the preparation and mechanical properties of a novel SiCnf/SiC composite. The single crystal SiC nanofiber(SiCnf) reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMC) were successfully fabricated by hot pressing the mixture of β-SiC powders, SiCnf and Al–B–C powder. The effects of SiCnf mass fraction as well as the hot-pressing temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of SiCnf/SiC CMC were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that the 15 wt% SiCnf/SiC CMC obtained by hot pressing (HP) at 1850 °C with 30 MPa for 60 min possessed the maximum flexural strength and fracture toughness of 678.2 MPa and 8.33 MPa m1/2, respectively. The nanofibers pull out, nanofibers bridging and cracks deflection were found by scanning electron microscopy, which are believed can strengthen and toughen the SiCnf/SiC CMC via consuming plenty of the fracture energy. Besides, although the relative density of the prepared SiCnf/SiC CMC further increased with the sintering temperature rose to 1900 °C, the further coarsend composites grains results in the deterioration of the mechanical properties for the obtained composites compared to 1850 °C.  相似文献

SiC–TiC0.5N0.5 composites were fabricated from β‐SiC and TiN powders with 2 vol% equimolar Y2O3–Sc2O3 additives by conventional hot pressing. Thermal and mechanical properties of the SiC–TiC0.5N0.5 composites were investigated as a function of initial TiN content. Relative densities of ≥98.9% were achieved for all samples. The addition of a small amount of TiN increased thermal conductivity, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of SiC ceramics. However, further addition of TiN in excess of 10 and 20 vol% deteriorated both thermal conductivity and flexural strength of the composites, respectively. In contrast, the fracture toughness of the composites increased continuously from 4.2 to 6.2 MPa?m1/2 with increasing initial TiN content from 0 to 35 vol%, due to crack deflection by TiC0.5N0.5. The maximum values of thermal conductivity and flexural strength were 224 W/m K for a 2 vol% TiC0.5N0.5 and 599 MPa for a 10 vol% TiC0.5N0.5 composite.  相似文献

(Mo0.94Nb0.06)(Si0.97Al0.03)2–SiC composites were consolidated via vacuum HP sintering from the mixture of (Mo0.94Nb0.06)(Si0.97Al0.03)2 powder and SiC nanoparticles. The (Mo0.94Nb0.06)(Si0.97Al0.03)2 powder was prepared by self propagating synthesis (SHS). The effects of SiC content on the ambient temperature mechanical properties and microstructure of the SHS-HP composites were investigated. The results show that the indentation fracture toughness, bending strength and Vickers hardness of (Mo0.94Nb0.06)(Si0.97Al0.03)2x vol% SiC composites increase gradually with the increase of SiC content. The grain size and relative density of the composites decrease gradually with increase of SiC content. (Mo0.94Nb0.06)(Si0.97Al0.03)2−15 vol% SiC composite exhibits excellent mechanical properties: Vickers hardness 12.62 GPa, fracture toughness 5.01 MPa m1/2, bending strength 472 MPa. With the addition of SiC, the fracture mode transforms from a mixed mode of transcrystalline and intercrystalline fracture to mainly transcrystalline fracture.  相似文献

Boron carbide (B4C) matrix composites had the advantages of high hardness, high melting point and low density. However, due to the low relative density and poor fracture toughness of B4C, its comprehensive properties were limited in engineering applications. In this work, in order to improve the comprehensive properties of B4C composites, B4C–SiC–SiB6–CeB6 composites were designed and fabricated via reactive hot pressing at 2050 °C and 20 MPa with B4C matrix and novel additives (Double doping of Si and CeO2) as raw materials. The effects of additive CeO2 content on the microstructures and mechanical properties of composite were investigated, and reaction mechanisms of B4C, Si and CeO2 at different temperatures were studied in detail. The work showed that liquid phase Si and SiB6 greatly improved the densification of composites. CeB6 played an indispensable role in the formation of SiC–SiB6 agglomerate structure, increasing strength and supplementing toughness. When the content of CeO2 was 6 wt%, the relative density, hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness reached to 99.7%, 34.9 GPa, 461.46 MPa and 5.57 MPa m1/2, respectively. Our strategy benefited from the formation of two liquid phases and SiC–SiB6 agglomerate structure, showing great potential in promoting sintering and improving fracture toughness.  相似文献

A reactive infiltration processing of SiC/Fe–Si composites using preforms made of coked rice husks (RHs) and SiC powder in different ratios is reported, in which FeSi2 alloy was used as infiltrant. The preforms were heat-treated at 1550 °C for 6 h prior to the infiltration. The coked RHs, which are composed of SiO2 and C, were converted to SiC and poorly crystallized C by carbothermal reduction during the heat treatment. The study of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites shows that molten Fe–Si alloy had good wetting of the heat-treated preforms and adequate infiltration properties. Free carbon in the preform reacted with Si in the molten FeSi2 during infiltration forming new SiC, the composition of the intermetallic liquid being moved towards that of FeSi. As a result, the infiltrated composites are composed of SiC, FeSi2 and FeSi phases. Vickers hardness, elastic modulus, three-point flexural strength and indentation fracture toughness of the composites are found to increase with SiC additions up to 30% w/w in the preforms, reaching the values of 18.2 GPa, 290 GPa, 213 MPa and 4.9 MPa m1/2, respectively. With the SiC addition further raised to 45% w/w, the elastic modulus, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composite turned down probably due to high residual stress and hence the more intense induction of microcracks in the composite. De-bonding of SiC particles pulled out of the Fe–Si matrix, transgranular fracture of part of the SiC particles and in the Fe–Si matrix, and crack bridging all exist in the fracture process of the composites.  相似文献

B4C-based composites were synthesized by spark plasma sintering using B4C、Ti3SiC2、Si as starting materials. The effects of sintering temperature and second phase content on mechanical performance and microstructure of composites were studied. Full dense B4C-based composites were obtained at a low sintering temperature of 1800 °C. The B4C-based composite with 10 wt% (TiB2+SiC) shows excellent mechanical properties: the Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, and flexural strength are 33 GPa, 8 MPa m1/2, 569 MPa, respectively. High hardness and flexural strength were attributed to the high relative density and grain refinement, the high fracture toughness was owing to the crack deflection and uniform distribution of the second phase.  相似文献

In this work, TiC-SiC-Ti3SiC2 composites were synthesized by in situ reactive hot pressing using β-SiC, graphite, and TiH2 powders as initial materials. Microstructure and mechanical properties of as-prepared dense composites were systematically investigated. It was found that by increasing the initial SiC content the final SiC content in the composites increased in contrast to the decrease in TiC and Ti3SiC2 contents. In the dense composites, TiC and Ti3SiC2 grains exhibited transgranular fracture, whereas SiC particles showed intergranular fracture. The composite containing 77 vol.% TiC, 4 vol.% SiC, and 19 vol.% Ti3SiC2 had the highest flexural strength of 706.6 MPa. The composite consisting of 44 vol.% TiC, 49 vol.% SiC, and 7 vol.% Ti3SiC2 exhibited the highest Vickers hardness of 22.3 GPa and the highest fracture toughness of 6.0 MPa·m1/2.  相似文献

Digital Light Processing (DLP) is a promising approach to fabricate delicate ceramic components with high-fidelity structural features. In this work, the alumina and zirconia/alumina ceramic suspensions with low viscosity and high solid loading (40 vol%) were prepared specifically for DLP 3D printing. After debinding and sintering, the final parts were obtained without any defects. The surface morphologies and mechanical properties of alumina (Al2O3) and zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) composites were investigated and the results showed that the final parts exhibited high relative densities and good interlayer combination at the sintering temperature of 1600 °C. Comparing with the Al2O3, the ZTA composites exhibited significantly enhanced density (99.4%), bending strength (516.7 MPa) and indentation fracture toughness (7.76 MPa m1/2).  相似文献

SiC/SiC composites prepared by liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) have the advantages of high densification, matrix cracking stress and ultimate tensile strength, but the toughness is usually insufficient. Relieving the residual microstress in fiber and interphase, dissipating crack propagation energy, and improving the crystallization degree of interphase can effectively increase the toughness of the composites. In this work, a special SiC particles and C (SiCP +C) double-cladding layer is designed and prepared via the infiltration of SiCP slurry and chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) of C in the porous SiC/SiC composites prepared by CVI. After LSI, the SiC generated by the reaction of C with molten Si combines with the SiCP to form a layered structure matrix, which can effectually relieve residual microstress in fiber and interphase and dissipate crack propagation energy. The crystallization degree of BN interphase is increased under the effects of C-Si reaction exotherm. The as-received SiC/SiC composites possess a density of 2.64 g/cm3 and a porosity of 6.1%. The flexural strength of the SiC/SiC composites with layered structure matrix and highly crystalline BN interphase is 577 MPa, and the fracture toughness reaches up to 37 MPa·m1/2. The microstructure and properties of four groups of SiC/SiC composites prepared by different processes are also investigated and compared to demonstrate the effectiveness of the SiCP +C double-cladding layer design, which offers a strategy for developing the SiC/SiC composites with high performance.  相似文献

SiCf/SiC composites with BN interface were prepared through isothermal-isobaric chemical vapour infiltration process. Room temperature mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, inter-laminar shear strength and fracture toughness (KIC) were studied for the composites. The tensile strength of the SiCf/SiC composites with stabilised BN interface was almost 3.5 times higher than that of SiCf/SiC composites with un-stabilised BN interphase. The fracture toughness is similarly enhanced to 23 MPa m1/2 by stabilisation treatment. Fibre push-through test results showed that the interfacial bond strength between fibre and matrix for the composite with un-stabilised BN interface was too strong (>48 MPa) and it has been modified to a weaker bond (10 MPa) due to intermediate heat treatment. In the case of composite in which BN interface was subjected to thermal treatment soon after the interface coating, the interfacial bond strength between fibre and matrix was relatively stronger (29 MPa) and facilitated limited fibre pull-out.  相似文献

Reaction-bonded SiC is a ceramic with excellent thermal properties, good corrosion resistance and the characteristic of near-net-shape manufacturing. However, the poor fracture toughness of free Si limits the applications of reaction-bonded SiC. In this study, TiC was added to reaction-bonded SiC and reacted with free Si to form Ti3SiC2. The effects of TiC and carbon black on the mechanical properties of reaction-bonded SiC were investigated. The results demonstrated that the in-situ formation of Ti3SiC2 and decrease in the content and size of free Si improved the mechanical properties of reaction-bonded SiC ceramics. The mechanical properties of TiC-added reaction-bonded SiC with 17.5 wt% carbon black were superior to those of TiC-added reaction-bonded SiC with 15 wt% carbon black. Moreover, increasing the TiC content of reaction-bonded SiC with 17.5 wt% carbon black from 0 to 7.5 wt% caused an increase in its bending strength from 183.92 to 424.43 MPa and an increase in fracture toughness from 3.7 to 5.24 MPa m1/2.  相似文献
