The Treasurer of APA is required to engage in the activity of modern prophecy known as forecasting. He also must recapitulate APA's financial past. This report, accordingly, will again cover APA's financial results for 1969, estimate our fiscal status for 1970, propose a budget for 1971, and make references to 1972 and 1973. This report reviews the financial highlights of 1987 and examines the 1986 audit report, the most recent year for which audited data are available. Information about the current financial affairs of the Association are compared to previous years to provide historical perspective. Significant fiscal implications of the activities of the Boards and Committees on which the Treasurer serves are also briefly noted. The purpose of this report is to record, for the annual archival issue of the American Psychologist, the audited financial statement of the Association for the past year. As such, it is an account of historical rather than current events. But I would be remiss not to discuss, even if briefly, the impact of Psychology Today on our financial affairs. Although the profits and losses associated with the magazine ultimately will have an impact on the APA in terms of its net worth, the operating budgets have been kept entirely separate so that revenues and expenses can be monitored. With the exception of some tax benefits and some shared audit expenses, both of which result in some savings to the APA, Psychology Today has little direct impact on the APA financial report that follows. The discussion of Psychology Today will follow the report on APA's financial operations. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Presents a report from the American Psychological Association's treasurer for the year 1977. Because APA's activities and materials are largely in publications, and since these constitute over half of our annual revenues, the first part of this year's Treasurer's Report is devoted to a selective overview of our publication programs and operations. The financial portion of the report includes (a) a report of the 1976 audited results from operations; (b) a look at APA's financial condition as of December 31, 1976; (c) a prediction for 1977; (d) a review of the 1978 approved budget; and (e) a projection for 1979. I am beginning to believe in the myth that all good things must come to an end as I near the end of my tenure (nine years in all) as APA treasurer. It has been my distinct pleasure to serve the APA membership in this capacity during a period when APA's "net worth" has increased from $1,043,732 in 1973 to $2,417,666 in 1980. In fact, by the time I officially leave this office, our net worth will be approaching the $3 million plateau. To put this growth in net worth in perspective, it took about 82 years for APA to build its net worth to $1,043,732, while it has only taken nine years (1973-1982) to go from $1,043,732 to nearly $3,000,000. This solidification of APA's financial foundation has been accomplished during a period in our economy when double-digit inflation rates have been commonplace. It has only been possible with the universal support of the entire APA governance system, including the special efforts of the Board of Directors, the Finance Committee, the Investment Committee, the executive officer, and the Central Office management team. This article provides an in-depth look into the recent financial success of APA. Topics discussed include: information concerning revenues for 1980, the expected surplus of 1981, and future budget plans for 1982. Reports on actions of the Council, including a petition of the Black Students Psychological Association that lists five goals. The item with the most potentially far-reaching implications for the future of APA is one that involves only rather minor immediate decisions. This is the question of the role of nondoctoral psychologists in APA and the proper function of APA in serving individuals who apply psychology. At the moment the recommendations ask only for study of the manpower needed for providing effective psychological services and of the way in which APA might serve the needs of the individual psychologists with less than doctoral training. This report discusses implications for an increase in dues income, membership standards, the size of APA, its journal program, and the effect of this issue on professional education, training, and standards. Public affairs issues continue to be a major concern of the Board of Directors and of Council. At the October meeting, Council will consider several resolutions related to nondiscriminatory practices; the legitimacy of the work of the membership of the Division of Military Psychology; a possible endorsement of a moratorium of university teaching, study, and research in protest of American involvement in Vietnam; and a possible withdrawal of the accreditation of any doctoral training program that discriminates against women. The report of the Treasurer at the Annual Meeting is always concerned with three years' Association operation: the year passed for which all accounts have been examined and audited; the current year; and the next year, the Budget for which the Council of Representatives adopted in Chicago on September 2, 1960. Following this pattern I will review the years 1959, 1960, and 1961. Also, I will comment on certain trends in our financial operation.
