APA journals: Suggestions for a radical change.

The comments in recent issues on APA publication difficulties (Amer. Psychologist, 9, 37-40) have stirred me to present for consideration the following rather radical suggestions. Perhaps all articles of APA journals might be issued as separates, even though the existing journal names (and editors' domains) would remain unchanged. To be accepted by an editor, an article must be accompanied by an abstract substantially ready for inclusion in the Psychological Abstracts. The "personality" of each APA journal will be maintained, but the physical appearance of the separately issued articles would be standardized. Prepaid subscribers would purchase only those articles chosen on the basis of regularly issued prepublication abstracts, and only enough copies of each article to meet its demand will be printed. Publication in APA journals: Advice from the editors.

The Council of Editors, at its spring meeting in 1965, exchanged experiences indicating that many members of the psychological community are not fully aware of the steps followed in editing the American Psychological Association journals, and do not have sufficient awareness of the differences in publication lags and editorial policies of the various journals. Structure and function of APA: Guidelines for the future.

The Bylaws of the Ameircan Psychological Association direct the Policy and Planning Board to review the structure and function of the Association as a whole every 5th year. In this, the 5th report, the Board concludes that despite evidence of success, there are problems which the Association, as presently structured, is ill-equipped to handle. A new tabulation of statistical procedures used in APA journals.

Tabulated articles in the American Psychological Association journals from 1964 to 1972 to show the types of statistical procedures used. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) consistently increased in frequency of use and by 1972, 71% of all articles using statistical inference used ANOVA. Although simple 1-way ANOVA was sometimes used, 88% of the ANOVA articles employed repeated measures or factorial designs. It is recommended that these techniques as well as simple 1-way ANOVA be taught in introductory statistics courses for psychology students. Citation impact, acceptance rate, and APA journals.

Investigated the role that factors such as journal circulation and acceptance rate play in relation to citation impact (CTI). CTI was negatively related to acceptance rate and positively related to circulation, consistent with the construct of CTI as a measure of journal quality. CTI was highest for moderate publication lag and had substantial stability over time. Compared to non-American Psychological Association (APA) journals, APA journals had significantly higher CTI in both 1977 and 1978, higher circulation, and lower acceptance rates.
