Gas chromatography analyses and behavioral assays showed that Atta laevigata, a highly polymorphic ant species, has a mandibular gland secretion that varies with castes. All castes contain 4-methyl-3-heptanone as the main component and its concentration is proportional to head size. Small workers and soldiers, but not medium size workers, also contain 4-methyl-3-heptanol. Queens show variations in their chemical composition after mating, as virgin males contain a secretion dominated by 4-methyl-3-heptanol, and, in a lesser proportion, 4-methyl-3-heptanone. In mated males these proportions are inverted. The compounds 4-methyl-6-hepten-3-one, 4-methyl-4-hepten-3-one, 6-methyl-tetradecene, and 2,6-dimethyl-2-dodecene are found only in queens. The behavioral response elicited by the secretion is mainly alarm, which is elicited more strongly by glands of larger workers. The results suggest that chemical castes, behavioral castes, and morphological castes overlap in this species.  相似文献

A chemical study of the sex pheromone of the cigarette beetle was carried out. Seven components were isolated from active fractions of column chromatography of the female extract, and their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic evidence and confirmed by synthesis to be (4S,6S,7S)-4,6-di-methyl-7-hydroxynonan-3-one (serricornin) (I), 2,6-diethyl-3,5-dimethyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran (anhydroserricornin) (II), 4,6-dimethylnonan-3,7-dione (III), 4,6-dimethylnonan-3,7-diol (IV), 4,6-dimethyl-7-hydroxy-4-nonen-3-one (V), (2S,3R)-2,3-dihydro-3,5-dimethyl-2-ethyl-6-(l-methyl-2-oxobutyl)-4H-pyran-4-one (serricorone) (VI) and (2S,3R)-2,3-dihydro-3,5-dimethyl-2-ethyl-6-(1-methyl-2-hydroxybutyl)-4H-pyran-4-one (serricorole) (VII).These structural features suggested that the occurrence of these components might be related to the polyketide biosynthesis. The behavioral bioassay and BAG experiments revealed the biological role of each component in the copulatory behavior of this insect.  相似文献

Reinvestigation of the pheromonal activity of anhydroserricornin, (2S,3S)-2,6-diethyl-3,5-dimethyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran, showed that the magnitude of its activity was less than 1/103 of that of serricornin, 7-hydroxy-4,6-dimethyl-3-nonanone, the sex pheromone of the cigarette beetleLasioderma serricorne (F.). Neither a synergistic nor an inhibitory effect of anhydroserricornin addition on the action of serricornin was observed.  相似文献

InAtta sexdens rubropilosa, a strongly polyethic and polymorphic species of myrmicine ant, the contents of the mandibular gland vary with caste. Small workers of head width 0.5–1.8 mm, those generally engaged in duties inside the nest, contain chiefly 4-methyl-3-heptanone. Larger workers, those chiefly engaged in foraging, and the soldier caste contain a mixture dominated by neral and geranial, with very little of the ketone of the smaller workers. The soldiers have massive glands containing milligram amounts of neral and geranial. Virgin and mated females contain essentially only 4-methyl-3-heptanone, the amount increasing after mating, while virgin males have 4-methyl-3-heptanone and 4-methyl-3-heptanol in approximately equal proportions. Mated males have less secretion and lose the 4-methyl-3-heptanol.  相似文献

The chirality of the pheromone of the rice weevil,Sitophilus oryzae (L.), and the maize weevil,S. zeamais (Motschulsky), 5-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-heptanone, was determined using an acetyl lactate derivatization procedure. Maize weevils were shown to produce >98% 4S,5R. Determination was more difficult with rice weevils due to a smaller quantity of insect extract, but they were shown to produce at least 92% 4S, 5R.The attractancy of the four synthetic stereoisomers of 5-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-heptanone was tested using rice and maize weevils. As expected, both species were most strongly attracted to the 4S, 5R enantiomer. Maize weevils also showed low but significant responses (P < 0.05) to both 4R, 5R and 4S,5S. Rice weevils showed a highly significant (P < 0.01) response to 4R, 5S, although it was only about one third the response to 4S, 5R. Thus, (4S,5R)-5-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-heptanone is clearly the major component of the pheromone of bothS. zeamais andS. oryzae. This article reports the results of research only. The mandibular glands of the Israeli weaver ant,Polyrhachis simplex, contain a mixture of 4-heptanone, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one and 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol;its Dufour's gland secretion consists mainly ofn-tridecane. The significance of these glandular secretions in the biology of the weaver ant is discussed.  相似文献

The compositions of the alarm pheromones of two species of grass-cutting ant, Atta bisphaerica and A. capiguara, were examined, and caste and colony variations quantified. The pheromones of A. bisphaerica and A. capiguara were remarkably similar and were composed of a complex mixture of volatiles in which 4-methyl-3-heptanone and 2-heptanone were the most abundant compounds. Small but consistent intraspecific differences were found between the worker castes and between individual colonies. The results support the view that alarm pheromones are rarely species specific. The possible importance of intercolony variation is discussed.  相似文献

The mandibular gland secretions of worker castes from wild colonies of the leaf-cutting ants Atta sexdens sexdens and Atta opaciceps were analyzed quantitatively by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The secretions comprised a complex mixture of volatile, mainly oxygenated compounds, and their profiles exhibited considerable qualitative and quantitative variations among species and castes. The known alarm pheromone 4-methyl-3-heptanone was common to both species. The elevated relative proportions of this ketone found in the secretions of gardeners and generalists suggest that such castes are primarily responsible for the production and release of the alarm pheromone. Quantitative variations (but no qualitative differences) in the profiles of secretions of soldiers from different colonies of A. sexdens sexdens were detected, supporting the view that intraspecific colony recognition is mediated through mandibular gland secretions. Subsequent laboratory assays showed that, among the compounds identified by GC–MS, 4-methyl-3-heptanone elicited a strong alarm response in workers of A. sexdens sexdens and A. opaciceps.  相似文献

Sex pheromone of the San Jose scale   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The sex pheromone of the San Jose scale,Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comstock), was isolated from airborne collections on Porapak Q. Two components, present in approximately equal amounts, were identified as (Z)-3,7-dimethyl-2,7-octadien-1-yl propanoate and 3-methylene-7-methyl-7-octen-1-yl propanoate. Greenhouse bioassays and field tests have shown that the compounds are independently attractive to male San Jose scale. These structures are compared with those of other known scale pheromones.  相似文献

A male-produced aggregation pheromone was demonstrated in Colopterus truncatus Randall (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) by gas chromatographic comparisons of male and female volatile emissions. Male-specific compounds were identified with coupled gas chromatographic–mass spectrometric (GC-MS) analysis and GC and MS comparison of authentic standards. Physiological activity was evaluated by coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic (GC-EAG) recordings, and electroantennographic (EAG) assays of standards. The male-produced volatiles eliciting responses from male and female antennae (and relative abundance) were (2E,4E,6E)-3,5-dimethyl2,4,6-octatriene (1) (1.8), (2E,4E,6E)-4,6-dimethyl-2,4,6-nonatriene (2) (100), and (2E,4E,6E,8E)-3,5,7-trimethyl-2,4,6,8-decatetraene (3) (3.3). A fourth male-specific compound, (2E,4E,6E,8E)-4,6,8-trimethyl-2,4,6,8-undecatetraene (4) (0.6) was not EAG-active. EAG dose–response studies showed that the antennae were most sensitive to 2 followed by 3 and 1. Synthetic 2, binary blends of 1 and 3, and tertiary blends of 1, 2, and 3 were highly attractive in the field when synergized with fermenting whole-wheat bread dough. In the field, cross-attraction to the C. truncatus pheromone components was observed for Carpophilus lugubris Murray, C. antiquus Melsheimer, and C. brachypterus Say.  相似文献

Semiochemicals from bark beetles: New results, remarks, and reflections   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A brief survey is given about recent results in the identification of semiochemicals in bark beetles: Males ofIps sexdentatus (Boern.), stressed by the attack on resinous trees produce large amounts of 3(S)-1-methyl-5-(1-hydroxyl-1-methylethyl)-cyclohexa-1,3-diene. The compound appears to be derived from 3-carene and acts as a repellent. Males ofIps typographus (L.), stressed through the attack on unsuitable host material release 3-methyl-7-methylene-1,3(E), 8-nonatriene, which seems to act as a repellent. The odor bouquet of three species ofPityogenes is described. The occurrence of (+)-grandisol and other compounds related to weevil pheromones points to a close relation between Scolytidae and Curculionidae. Females ofDendroctonus simplex (Le Conte) use (–)-frontalin as the main pheromone. 6-Methyl-6-hepten-2-one, a minor component among the volatile compounds released by the females, is regarded as a possible precursor of frontalin. Similarly, (2R,5S)-2(1-hydroxyl-1-methylethyl)-5-methyltetrahydrofuran, pityol, a pheromone ofPityophthorus spp., is regarded to at least share a common biogenetic precursor with 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol, sulcatol. A new bicylic acetal, 2-ethyl-1,5-dimethyl-6,8-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octane, is described as an aggregation pheromone of the beech bark beetle,Taphrorychus bicolor (Herbst). Structural relationships between bark beetle pheromones and plant volatiles are discussed.  相似文献

Males of five sympatric species of economically damaging cucujid grain beetles,Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens),C. pusillus (Schönhen),C. turcicus (Grouvelle),Oryzaephilus mercator (Fauvel), andO. surinamensis (L.), produce macrolide aggregation pheromones especially in the presence of food. Work leading to the isolation, identification, and establishment of biological activity of these semiochemicals is reviewed. The trivial name cucujolide is proposed and used to identify these compounds that are characteristic of the Cucujidae. The twoOryzaephilus share species share a common cucujolide pheromone, whileCryptolestes species use cucujolides that are either enantiomeric, unique to the genus, or released in trace quantities byOryzaephilus spp. and not used as pheromones by the latter species. The major mechanisms for species specificity in chemical communication are: (1) presence of a unique pheromone (C. ferrugineus andC. pusillus); (2) use of pheromones that are inactive alone but synergize response to cucujolides unique to a species (C. pusillus, C. turcicus, andO. surinamensis); (3) response to only one enantiomer of a pheromone (C. ferrugineus, O. surinamensis, andO. mercator); and (4) synergism between enantiomers of a pheromone (C. turcicus). The only species for which cross-attraction was evident wasO. mercator toO. surinamensis. Both sexes ofOryzaephilus spp. produce (R)-1-octen-3-ol, which highly synergizes response to the cucujolide pheromones. Similar synergism occurs between hexanal, octanal, and nonanal and the cucujolide pheromones ofOryzaephilus spp. The males of a sixth cucujid species,Cathartus quadricollis (Guér) produce a different aggregation pheromone, (3R,6E)-7-methyl-6-nonen-3-yl acetate. Trapping ofCryptolestes andOryzaephilus spp. in cardboard traps baited with pheromones is efficient in environments mimicking food-storage areas. Pheromone-baited plastic probe traps are the most efficient at capturing these species in infested grain.Coleoptera: Cucujidae.Presented at the 194th American Chemical Society National Meeting in the Symposium on Insect Chemical Communication: Unifying Concepts (Burdick & Jackson International Award in Pesticide Chemistry honoring Dr. James H. A male-produced aggregation pheromone was identified for the Australian sap beetle,Carpophilus davidsoni Dobson (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), by bioassay-guided fractionation of volatiles collected from feeding beetles. The most abundant components were: (2E,4E,6E)-5-ethyl-3-methyl-2,4,6-nonatriene, (3E,5E,7E)-6-ethyl-4-methyl-3,5,7-decatriene, (2E,4E,6E,8E)-3,5,7-trimethyl-2,4,6,8-undecatetraene, and (2E,4E,6E,8E)-7-ethyl-3,5-dimethyl-2,4,6,8-undecatetraene. The relative abundance of these components in collections from individual males feeding on artificial diet was 100:7:9:31, respectively. Pheromone production began within several days after males were placed onto diet medium and continued for at least 20 weeks. Peak production was >3 µg total pheromone per male per day. Males in groups of 50–60 emitted less pheromone (the peak level was 0.09 µg per beetle per day), and the emissions from groups contained relatively little tetraene (proportions of the components listed above were 100:7:2:7, respectively). Three additional trienes and one additional tetraene were identified in minor amounts; the entire eight-component male-specific blend is qualitatively identical and quantitatively similar to that of the North American sibling species,C. freemani Dobson. A synthetic blend of the four major components on rubber septa, prepared to emit in the same proportions as from individual males, was highly attractive in the field when synergized with fermenting whole-wheat bread dough. Cross-attraction was observed in the field involving the pheromones ofC. davidsoni, C. hemipterus (L.), andC. mutilatus Erichson. Potential uses of the pheromones in pest management are discussed.Names are necessary to report factually on available data; however, the USDA neither guarantees nor warrants the standards of the products, and the use of the names by USDA implies no approval of the products to the exclusion of others that may also be suitable.  相似文献

By using chemical analyses, as well as laboratory and field behavioral tests, we tested the hypothesis that rove beetles of the myrmecophilous genus Pella use alarm pheromone compounds to avert attacks by their host ant Lasius fuliginosus. The secretions of Pella funestus and P. humeralis contain quinones and different aliphatic compounds, mainly undecane and 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (sulcatone). The latter two chemicals are also found in L. fuliginosus pheromone glands. Behavioral tests confirmed that undecane serves as an “aggressive alarm”-inducing pheromone in L. fuliginosus, whereas sulcatone most likely is a “panic-alarm”-inducing pheromone. The main tergal-secretion compounds, various quinones and undecane, individually and in mixtures induced aggression in L. fuliginosus workers. When sulcatone was added to these compounds, the space around the odor source was avoided and a reduced number of aggressive acts observed, suggesting that sulcatone blocks the aggression-inducing effect of undecane and the quinones. These results support the hypothesis that Pella beetles mimic alarm pheromones of their hosts. This is a rare example of chemical mimicry in myrmecophilous insects in which chemicals other than cuticular hydrocarbons are used.  相似文献

3,7-Dimethyl-2-undecanol, 3,7,9-trimethyl-2-tridecanol, and 3,7, 11-trimethyl-2-tridecanol were synthesized as racemic mixtures in moderate yields. The alcohols are known precursors of the female sex pheromones of the pine sawfly species Diprion nipponica, Macrodiprion nemoralis, and Microdiprion pallipes, respectively. Stereoisomeric mixtures of 3,8,12-trimethyl-2-tridecanol, erythro-(2R,3R,11R/S)-3,11-dimethyl-2-tetradecanol, 3,5-dimethyl-2-tetradecanol, and 5,7-dimethyl-2-tetradecanol, structurally related to sex pheromone alcohol precursors of pine sawfly species, were also synthesized in moderate yields. The key reaction in the syntheses was the ring opening of -butyrolactones by using different alkyl lithiums as nucleophiles.  相似文献

The two components of the sex pheromone of the San Jose scale,Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comstock) were synthesized. The first component, 7-methyl-3-methylene-7-octen-1-yl propanoate, was obtained by the addition of a 4-methyl-4-penten-1-yl copper complex to 3-butyn-1-yl propanoate (or 3-butyn-1-yl trimethylsilyl ether). Reaction of the same copper complex with propyne followed by treatment with carbon dioxide gave a key intermediate in the stereoselective synthesis of (Z)-3,7-dimethyl-2,7-octadien-1-yl propanoate, the second component of the pheromone.Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comstock) (Homoptera: Diaspididae).Contribution No. 73 from the Research Laboratory of Zoecon Corporation.  相似文献

The absolute configuration of the sex pheromone of the Israeli pine bast scale,Matsucoccus josephi, was determined as (2E,5R,6E,8E)-5,7-dimethyl-2,6,8-decatrien-4-one, designated here asR-E with 10% (2E,5S,6E,8E)-5,7-dimethyl-2,6,8-decatrien-4-one, designated asS-E. The chirality of the quantitatively minorZ isomer was (2E,5R,6Z,8E)-5,7-dimethyl-2,6,8-decatrien-4-one (R-Z). Chiral assignments were made by comparative gas chromatographic (GC) analysis of naturalM. josephi pheromone with stereoselectively synthesized stereoisomers on a chiral Cyclodex-B column, which separated the enantiomers with baseline resolution. In gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analysis of the racemicZ andE isomers, the latter elicited the stronger antennal response by maleM. josephi. In GC-EAD of all four stereoisomers, employing the chiral column,R-E was the most active stereoisomer. In field testsR-E attracted 10 times more males ofM. josephi than didS-E. The racemicE/Z pheromone mixture, containing all four stereoisomers in approximately equal amounts, attracted as many maleM. josephi as did an equivalent amount ofR-E, indicating that the other stereoisomers are not inhibitory. The same keto-diene moiety with the same chiral center and configuration in all three known Matsucoccidae sex pheromones implies a common biosynthetic pathway and phylogenetic relationship.Contribution from the Agricultural Research Organization, the Volcani Center, No. 1496-E, 1994 series.Part of the work was performed during a sabbatical leave of E.D. at Simon Fraser University.  相似文献

The response of the two eulophid egg parasitoid species Chrysonotomyia ruforum and Dipriocampe diprioni to sex pheromones of their sawfly hosts Diprion pini and Neodiprion sertifer was studied in olfactometer bioassays. Females of C. ruforum were arrested when exposed to odor of the tested major sex pheromone components of Diprion pini [acetate and propionate of (2S,3R,7R)-3,7–dimethyl-2–tridecanol] or Neodiprion sertifer [(2S,3S,7S)-3,7–dimethyl-2–pentadecyl acetate]. This behavioral response of C. ruforum was observed whether (1) parasitoid females had oviposition experience with D. pini eggs or not, (2) parasitoid females emerged from D. pini eggs of a French population or from N. sertifer eggs of a Finnish population, and (3) the tested sex pheromone concentration was low (1 ng/l hexane) or high (100 ng/l hexane). However, C. ruforum did not behaviorally respond to a stereoisomer of the major sex pheromone component of N. sertifer, which is known to act as a sex pheromone antagonist [antagonist = (2S,3R,7R)-3,7–dimethyl-2–pentadecyl acetate]. Thus, C. ruforum responded stereospecifically to the S,S,S configured pheromone of N. sertifer, but not to the S,R,R configuration. Females of the parasitoid D. diprioni were also arrested by the tested major sex pheromone components of the host D. pini. The kairomonal effects of diprionid host sex pheromones on these egg parasitoids are compared to known responses of egg parasitoids to lepidopteran sex pheromones.  相似文献

A male-produced aggregation pheromone, common to the rice weevil,Sitophilus oryzae, and the maize weevil,S. zeamais, was isolated and identified from hexane extracts of highly absorbent paper disks exposed individually to young virgin male weevils. A combination of preparative column and gas-liquid chromatography of disk extracts yielded purified natural pheromone. When analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the structure of the natural pheromone, sitophilure, proved to be (R *,S *)-5-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-heptanone, of unknown enantiomeric composition. Synthetic racemic pheromone was highly attractive to males and females of both rice and maize weevils. In addition, both sexes of the granary weevil,S. granarius (L.) were attracted to the racemic preparation.  相似文献
