In this paper, we present an improved general methodology including four stages to design robust and reliable products under uncertainties. First, as the formulation stage, we consider reliability and robustness simultaneously to propose the new formulation of reliability-based robust design optimization (RBRDO) problems. In order to generate reliable and robust Pareto-optimal solutions, the combination of genetic algorithm with reliability assessment loop based on the performance measure approach is applied as the second stage. Next, we develop two criteria to select a solution from obtained Pareto-optimal set to achieve the best possible implementation. Finally, the result verification is performed with Monte Carlo Simulations and also the quality improvement during manufacturing process is considered by identifying and controlling the critical variables. The effectiveness and applicability of this new proposed methodology is demonstrated through a case study.  相似文献

There are two commonly used analytical reliability analysis methods: linear approximation - first-order reliability method (FORM), and quadratic approximation - second-order reliability method (SORM), of the performance function. The reliability analysis using FORM could be acceptable in accuracy for mildly nonlinear performance functions, whereas the reliability analysis using SORM may be necessary for accuracy of nonlinear and multi-dimensional performance functions. Even though the reliability analysis using SORM may be accurate, it is not as much used for probability of failure calculation since SORM requires the second-order sensitivities. Moreover, the SORM-based inverse reliability analysis is rather difficult to develop.This paper proposes an inverse reliability analysis method that can be used to obtain accurate probability of failure calculation without requiring the second-order sensitivities for reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) of nonlinear and multi-dimensional systems. For the inverse reliability analysis, the most probable point (MPP)-based dimension reduction method (DRM) is developed. Since the FORM-based reliability index (β) is inaccurate for the MPP search of the nonlinear performance function, a three-step computational procedure is proposed to improve accuracy of the inverse reliability analysis: probability of failure calculation using constraint shift, reliability index update, and MPP update. Using the three steps, a new DRM-based MPP is obtained, which estimates the probability of failure of the performance function more accurately than FORM and more efficiently than SORM. The DRM-based MPP is then used for the next design iteration of RBDO to obtain an accurate optimum design even for nonlinear and/or multi-dimensional system. Since the DRM-based RBDO requires more function evaluations, the enriched performance measure approach (PMA+) with new tolerances for constraint activeness and reduced rotation matrix is used to reduce the number of function evaluations.  相似文献

In the reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) model, the mean values of uncertain system variables are usually applied as design variables, and the cost is optimized subject to prescribed probabilistic constraints as defined by a nonlinear mathematical programming problem. Therefore, a RBDO solution that reduces the structural weight in uncritical regions does not only provide an improved design but also a higher level of confidence in the design. In this paper, we present recent developments for the RBDO model relative to two points of view: reliability and optimization. Next, we develop several distributions for the hybrid method and the optimum safety factor methods (linear and nonlinear RBDO). Finally, we demonstrate the efficiency of our safety factor approach extended to nonlinear RBDO with application to a tri-material structure.  相似文献

Multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) is a concurrent engineering design tool for large-scale, complex systems design that can be affected through the optimal design of several smaller functional units or subsystems. Due to the multiobjective nature of most MDO problems, recent work has focused on formulating the MDO problem to resolve tradeoffs between multiple, conflicting objectives. In this paper, we describe the novel integration of linear physical programming within the collaborative optimization framework, which enables designers to formulate multiple system-level objectives in terms of physically meaningful parameters. The proposed formulation extends our previous multiobjective formulation of collaborative optimization, which uses goal programming at the system and subsystem levels to enable multiple objectives to be considered at both levels during optimization. The proposed framework is demonstrated using a racecar design example that consists of two subsystem level analyses — force and aerodynamics — and incorporates two system-level objectives: (1) minimize lap time and (2) maximize normalized weight distribution. The aerodynamics subsystem also seeks to minimize rearwheel downforce as a secondary objective. The racecar design example is presented in detail to provide a benchmark problem for other researchers. It is solved using the proposed formulation and compared against a traditional formulation without collaborative optimization or linear physical programming. This paper presents a new univariate decomposition method for design sensitivity analysis and reliability-based design optimization of mechanical systems subject to uncertain performance functions in constraints. The method involves a novel univariate approximation of a general multivariate function in the rotated Gaussian space for reliability analysis, analytical sensitivity of failure probability with respect to design variables, and standard gradient-based optimization algorithms. In both reliability and sensitivity analyses, the proposed effort has been reduced to performing multiple one-dimensional integrations. The evaluation of these one-dimensional integrations requires calculating only conditional responses at selected deterministic input determined by sample points and Gauss–Hermite integration points. Numerical results indicate that the proposed method provides accurate and computationally efficient estimates of the sensitivity of failure probability, which leads to accurate design optimization of uncertain mechanical systems.  相似文献

In engineering design, to achieve high reliability and safety in complex and coupled systems (e.g., Multidisciplinary Systems), Reliability Based Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (RBMDO) has been received increasing attention. If there are sufficient data of uncertainties to construct the probability distribution of each input variable, the RBMDO can efficiently deal with the problem. However there are both Aleatory Uncertainty (AU) and Epistemic Uncertainty (EU) in most Multidisciplinary Systems (MS). In this situation, the results of the RBMDO will be unreliable or risky because there are insufficient data to precisely construct the probability distribution about EU due to time, money, etc. This paper proposes formulations of Mixed Variables (random and fuzzy variables) Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MVMDO) and a method of MVMDO within the framework of Sequential Optimization and Reliability Assessment (MVMDO-SORA). The MVMDO overcomes difficulties caused by insufficient information for uncertainty. The proposed method enables designers to solve MDO problems in the presence of both AU and EU. Besides, the proposed method can efficiently reduce the computational demand. Examples are used to demonstrate the proposed formulations and the efficiency of MVMDO-SORA.  相似文献

This paper presents an efficient reliability-based multidisciplinary design optimization (RBMDO) strategy. The conventional RBMDO has tri-level loops: the first level is an optimization in the deterministic space, the second one is a reliability analysis in the probabilistic space, and the third one is the multidisciplinary analysis. Since it is computationally inefficient when high-fidelity simulation methods are involved, an efficient strategy is proposed. The strategy [named probabilistic bi-level integrated system synthesis (ProBLISS)] utilizes a single-level reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) approach, in which the reliability analysis and optimization are conducted in a sequential manner by approximating limit state functions. The single-level RBDO is associated with the BLISS formulation to solve RBMDO problems. Since both the single-level RBDO and BLISS are mainly driven by approximate models, the accuracy of models can be a critical issue for convergence. The convergence of the strategy is guaranteed by employing the trust region–sequential quadratic programming framework, which validates approximation models in the trust region radius. Two multidisciplinary problems are tested to verify the strategy. ProBLISS significantly reduces the computational cost and shows stable convergence while maintaining accuracy.  相似文献

With the increased complexity of complex engineering systems (CES), more and more disciplines, coupled relationships, work processes, design data, design knowledge and uncertainties are involved. Currently, the MDO is facing unprecedented challenges especially in dealing with the CES by different specialists dispersed geographically on heterogeneous platforms with different analysis tools. The product design data integration and data sharing among the participants and the workflow optimization hamper the development and applications of MDO in enterprises seriously. Therefore, a multi-hierarchical integrated product design data model (MiPDM) supporting the MDO in web environment and a web services-based MDO framework considering aleatory and epistemic uncertainties are proposed in this paper. With the enabling technologies including web services, ontology, workflow, agent, XML, and evidence theory, the proposed framework enables the designers geographically dispersed to work collaboratively in the MDO environment. The ontology-based workflow enables the logical reasoning of MDO to be processed dynamically. Finally, a proof-of-concept prototype system is developed based on Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and an example of supersonic business jet is demonstrated to verify the web services-based MDO framework.  相似文献

The reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) presents to be a systematic and powerful approach for process designs under uncertainties. The traditional double-loop methods for solving RBDO problems can be computationally inefficient because the inner reliability analysis loop has to be iteratively performed for each probabilistic constraint. To solve RBDOs in an alternative and more effective way, Deb et al. [1] proposed recently the use of evolutionary algorithms with an incorporated fastPMA. Since the imbedded fastPMA needs the gradient calculations and the initial guesses of the most probable points (MPPs), their proposed algorithm would encounter difficulties in dealing with non-differentiable constraints and the effectiveness could be degraded significantly as the initial guesses are far from the true MPPs. In this paper, a novel population-based evolutionary algorithm, named cell evolution method, is proposed to improve the computational efficiency and effectiveness of solving the RBDO problems. By using the proposed cell evolution method, a family of test cells is generated based on the target reliability index and with these reliability test cells the determination of the MPPs for probabilistic constraints becomes a simple parallel calculation task, without the needs of gradient calculations and any initial guesses. Having determined the MPPs, a modified real-coded genetic algorithm is applied to evolve these cells into a final one that satisfies all the constraints and has the best objective function value for the RBDO. Especially, the nucleus of the final cell contains the reliable solution to the RBDO problem. Illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed cell evolution method in solving RBDOs. Simulation results reveal that the proposed cell evolution method outperforms comparative methods in both the computational efficiency and solution accuracy, especially for multi-modal RBDO problems.  相似文献

The potential of Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is not sufficiently exploited in current building design practice. I argue that this field of engineering requires a special setup of the optimization model that considers the uniqueness of buildings, and allows the designer to interact with the optimization in order to assess qualities of aesthetics, expression, and building function. For this reason, the approach applies a performance optimization based on resource consumption extended by preference criteria. Furthermore, building design-specific components serve for the decomposition and an interactive way of working. The component scheme follows the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) as a common Building Information Model (BIM) standard in order to allow a seamless integration into an interactive CAD working process in the future. A representative case study dealing with a frame-based hall design serves to illustrate these considerations. An N-Square diagram or Design Structure Matrix (DSM) represents the system of components with the disciplinary dependencies and workflow of the analysis. The application of a Multiobjective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) leads to demonstrable results.  相似文献

This paper presents an efficient metamodel-based multi-objective multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) architecture for solving multi-objective high fidelity MDO problems. One of the important features of the proposed method is the development of an efficient surrogate model-based multi-objective particle swarm optimization (EMOPSO) algorithm, which is integrated with a computationally efficient metamodel-based MDO architecture. The proposed EMOPSO algorithm is based on sorted Pareto front crowding distance, utilizing star topology. In addition, a constraint-handling mechanism in non-domination appointment and fuzzy logic is also introduced to overcome feasibility complexity and rapid identification of optimum design point on the Pareto front. The proposed algorithm is implemented on a metamodel-based collaborative optimization architecture. The proposed method is evaluated and compared with existing multi-objective optimization algorithms such as multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), using a number of well-known benchmark problems. One of the important results observed is that the proposed EMOPSO algorithm provides high diversity with fast convergence speed as compared to other algorithms. The proposed method is also applied to a multi-objective collaborative optimization of unmanned aerial vehicle wing based on high fidelity models involving structures and aerodynamics disciplines. The results obtained show that the proposed method provides an effective way of solving multi-objective multidisciplinary design optimization problem using high fidelity models.  相似文献

In this paper, two special formulations to carry out a reliability-based design optimization of elastoplastic mechanical structures are introduced. The first approach is based on a well-known two-level method where the first level involves the optimization for the design parameters whereas the evaluation of the probabilistic constraints is carried out in a sub-optimization level. Because the evaluation of the probabilistic constraints in a sub-optimization level causes non-convergence behavior for some problems as indicated in the literature, an alternative formulation based on one-level is developed considering the optimality conditions of the β-computation by which the probabilistic constraint appears in the first level reliability-based design optimization formulation. In both approaches, an explicit parameter optimization problem is proposed for the computation of a design point for elastoplastic structures.Three examples in this paper demonstrate that the one-level reliability-based design optimization formulation is superior in terms of convergence to an optimal design than the two-level reliability-based design optimization formulation.  相似文献

To ensure a consistent design representation for serving multidisciplinary analysis, this research study proposes an intelligent modeling system to automatically generate multiphysics simulation models to support multidisciplinary design optimization processes by using a knowledge based engineering approach. A key element of this system is a multiphysics information model (MIM), which integrates the design and simulation knowledge from multiple engineering domains. The intelligent modeling system defines classes with attributes to represent various aspects of physical entities. Moreover, it uses functions to capture the non-physical information, such as control architecture, simulation test maneuvers and simulation procedures. The challenge of system coupling and the interactions among the disciplines are taken into account during the process of knowledge acquisition. Depending on the domain requirements, the intelligent modeling system extracts the required knowledge from the MIM and uses this first to instantiate submodels and second to construct the multiphysics simulation model by combining all submodels. The objective of this research is to reduce the time and effort for modeling complex systems and to provide a consistent and concurrent design environment to support multidisciplinary design optimization. The development of an unstable and unmanned aerial vehicle, a multirotor UAV, is selected as test case. The intelligent modeling system is demonstrated by modeling thirty-thousand multirotor UAV designs with different topologies and by ensuring the automatic development of a consistent control system dedicated for each individual design. Moreover, the resulting multiphysics simulation model of the multirotor UAV is validated by comparing with the flight data of an actual quadrotor UAV. The results show that the multiphysics simulation model matches test data well and indicate that high fidelity models can be generated with the automatic model generation process.  相似文献

Performance-Based Design (PBD) methodologies is the contemporary trend in designing better and more economic earthquake-resistant structures where the main objective is to achieve more predictable and reliable levels of safety and operability against natural hazards. On the other hand, reliability-based optimization (RBO) methods directly account for the variability of the design parameters into the formulation of the optimization problem. The objective of this work is to incorporate PBD methodologies under seismic loading into the framework of RBO in conjunction with innovative tools for treating computational intensive problems of real-world structural systems. Two types of random variables are considered: Those which influence the level of seismic demand and those that affect the structural capacity. Reliability analysis is required for the assessment of the probabilistic constraints within the RBO formulation. The Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method is considered as the most reliable method for estimating the probabilities of exceedance or other statistical quantities albeit with excessive, in many cases, computational cost. First or Second Order Reliability Methods (FORM, SORM) constitute alternative approaches which require an explicit limit-state function. This type of limit-state function is not available for complex problems. In this study, in order to find the most efficient methodology for performing reliability analysis in conjunction with performance-based optimum design under seismic loading, a Neural Network approximation of the limit-state function is proposed and is combined with either MCS or with FORM approaches for handling the uncertainties. These two methodologies are applied in RBO problems with sizing and topology design variables resulting in two orders of magnitude reduction of the computational effort.  相似文献

Optimal performance of vehicle occupant restraint system (ORS) requires an accurate assessment of occupant injury values including head, neck and chest responses, etc. To provide a feasible framework for incorporating occupant injury characteristics into the ORS design schemes, this paper presents a reliability-based robust approach for the development of the ORS. The uncertainties of design variables are addressed and the general formulations of reliable and robust design are given in the optimization process. The ORS optimization is a highly nonlinear and large scale problem. In order to save the computational cost, an optimal sampling strategy is applied to generate sample points at the stage of design of experiment (DOE). Further, to efficiently obtain a robust approximation, the support vector regression (SVR) is suggested to construct the surrogate model in the vehicle ORS design process. The multiobjective particle swarm optimization (MPSO) algorithm is used for obtaining the Pareto optimal set with emphasis on resolving conflicting requirements from some of the objectives and the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method is applied to perform the reliability and robustness analysis. The differences of three different Pareto fronts of the deterministic, reliable and robust multiobjective optimization designs are compared and analyzed in this study. Finally, the reliability-based robust optimization result is verified by using sled system test. The result shows that the proposed reliability-based robust optimization design is efficient in solving ORS design optimization problems.  相似文献

A novel approach is proposed to solve reliability-based optimization (RBO) problems where the uncertainty dimension can be large and where there may be many reliability constraints. The basic idea is to transform all reliability constraints in the target RBO problem into non-probabilistic ordinary ones by a pilot analysis. It will be shown that such a pilot analysis only requires a single run of the modified subset simulation (called the parallel subset simulation) regardless the number of the reliability constraints. Once the reliability constraints are approximated by the ordinary ones, the RBO problem can be solved as if it is an ordinary optimization problem. The resulting optimal solution should be approximately feasible, and the corresponding objective function value is minimized under the approximate constraints. Three numerical examples are investigated to verify the proposed novel approach. The results show that the approach may be capable of finding approximate solutions that are usually close to the actual solution of the target RBO problem.  相似文献

Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) is a methodology for finding optimized designs that are characterized with a low probability of failure. Primarily, RBDO consists of optimizing a merit function while satisfying reliability constraints. The reliability constraints are constraints on the probability of failure corresponding to each of the failure modes of the system or a single constraint on the system probability of failure. The probability of failure is usually estimated by performing a reliability analysis. During the last few years, a variety of different formulations have been developed for RBDO. Traditionally, these have been formulated as a double-loop (nested) optimization problem. The upper level optimization loop generally involves optimizing a merit function subject to reliability constraints, and the lower level optimization loop(s) compute(s) the probabilities of failure corresponding to the failure mode(s) that govern(s) the system failure. This formulation is, by nature, computationally intensive. Researchers have provided sequential strategies to address this issue, where the deterministic optimization and reliability analysis are decoupled, and the process is performed iteratively until convergence is achieved. These methods, though attractive in terms of obtaining a workable reliable design at considerably reduced computational costs, often lead to premature convergence and therefore yield spurious optimal designs. In this paper, a novel unilevel formulation for RBDO is developed. In the proposed formulation, the lower level optimization (evaluation of reliability constraints in the double-loop formulation) is replaced by its corresponding first-order Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) necessary optimality conditions at the upper level optimization. Such a replacement is computationally equivalent to solving the original nested optimization if the lower level optimization problem is solved by numerically satisfying the KKT conditions (which is typically the case). It is shown through the use of test problems that the proposed formulation is numerically robust (stable) and computationally efficient compared to the existing approaches for RBDO.  相似文献

The maximum entropy principle (MEP) is used to generate a natural probability distribution among the many possible that have the same moment conditions. The MEP can accommodate higher order moment information and therefore facilitate a higher quality PDF model. The performance of the MEP for PDF estimation is studied by using more than four moments. For the case with four moments, the results are compared with those by the Pearson system. It is observed that as accommodating higher order moment, the estimated PDF converges to the original one. A sensitivity analysis formulation of the failure probability based on the MEP is derived for reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) and the accuracy is compared with that by finite difference method (FDM). Two RBDO examples including a realistic three-dimensional wing design are solved by using the derived sensitivity formula and the MEP-based moment method. The results are compared with other methods such as TR-SQP, FAMM + Pearson system, FFMM + Pearson system in terms of accuracy and efficiency. It is also shown that an improvement in the accuracy by including more moment terms can increase numerical efficiency of optimization for the three-dimensional wing design. The moment method equipped with the MEP is found flexible and well adoptable for reliability analysis and design.  相似文献

In the engineering problems, the randomness and the uncertainties of the distribution of the structural parameters are a crucial problem. In the case of reliability-based design optimization (RBDO), it is the objective to play a dominant role in the structural optimization problem introducing the reliability concept. The RBDO problem is often formulated as a minimization of the initial structural cost under constraints imposed on the values of elemental reliability indices corresponding to various limit states. The classical RBDO leads to high computing time and weak convergence, but a Hybrid Method (HM) has been proposed to overcome these two drawbacks. As the hybrid method successfully reduces the computing time, we can increase the number of variables by introducing the standard deviations as optimization variables to minimize the error values in the probabilistic model. The efficiency of the hybrid method has been demonstrated on static and dynamic cases with extension to the variability of the probabilistic model. In this paper, we propose a modification on the formulation of the hybrid method to improve the optimal solutions. The proposed method is called, Improved Hybrid Method (IHM). The main benefit of this method is to improve the structure performance by much more minimizing the objective function than the hybrid method. It is also shown to demonstrate the optimality conditions. The improved hybrid method is next applied to two numerical examples, with consideration of the standard deviations as optimization variables (for linear and nonlinear distributions). When integrating the improved hybrid method within the probabilistic model variability, we minimize the objective function more and more.  相似文献
