Reviews the book, Handbook of Multicultural Perspectives on Stress and Coping edited by Philip T. P. Wong and Lillian C. J. Wong (see record 2006-01105-000). Paul and Lilian Wong's edited Handbook of Multicultural Perspectives on Stress and Coping does not shy away from the challenges inherent in cross-cultural work. In their opening chapter, they establish quickly that they are setting out to do more than simply compare cultures on established markers of stress and coping. In addition, perhaps primarily, they wish to broaden our very ideas of what stress and coping actually are by taking seriously the ways in which these concepts are understood in different cultures. Particularly welcome in this regard is the full consideration of religious, spiritual, and existential modes of coping, modes that are extremely common throughout the world--and probably more common in "the West" than is commonly acknowledged by largely secular psychologists. In his concluding review, Paul Pedersen provides a sobering inventory of the knowledge gaps in the culture, stress, and coping literature. The current volume is a welcome addition to this growing field, providing researchers with useful tools and intriguing hypotheses for use in future studies. Unfortunately, the book's coherence also suffers as a consequence of the uneven literature. That said, the difficulties in putting together a book such as this one should not be underestimated. The editors did an outstanding job of involving a number of cultural perspectives, both in terms of the writers themselves and also the topics they have chosen to study. Paul B. Baltes died in Berlin, Germany, on November 7, 2006, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was probably the most influential developmental psychologist on the international scene at the time of his death. His broad scientific agenda was devoted to establishing and promoting the life-span orientation of human development-an area that he, more than any other scholar of modern times, shaped into its current form. The obvious part of Paul's scientific legacy resides in over 250 publications covering various aspects of developmental psychology. Their impact is attested to by his numerous awards and honors, including election to some of the most prestigious scientific organizations in the world. Tested a multicultural competency training model's hypothesis that counseling students' White racial identity development strongly influences their attainment of multicultural counseling competencies (H. B. Sabnani et al; see record 1991-16743-001). 128 White counseling graduate students completed measures of White racial identity development and self-reported multicultural counseling competencies. Students' White racial identity development, educational level, and clinical experience demonstrated moderate correlations with multicultural competencies. Regression analyses indicated that racial identity attitudes explained variability in competencies beyond that accounted for by demographic, educational, and clinical variables. Results suggest that racial identity attitude development should be considered an integral component in the planning of multicultural counseling training. Comment in response to Stuart's recent article (see record 2004-10365-001) on multicultural competence. This comment includes three distinct voices. One voice is of a Brazilian woman, living in the United States, who experienced a visceral reaction to the article. The second voice is from a European American man who appreciates Stuart's efforts but is troubled by a disguised ideology that possibly objectifies culture and ignores sociopolitical realities. The third voice is from an Italian-Catholic-Austrian-Jewish man who can see himself and his clinical psychology training in what he considers Stuart's Western/White-male scientific multicultural metatheory. To the three of us, the practical suggestions Stuart offered seem useful, on the surface. However, we fear that when put into practice, these suggestions could not only be culturally insensitive, but in extreme cases might undermine some of the important progress made in the field of multicultural psychology over the past 2 decades. Joy Paul Guilford, known to his friends as J.P., died of natural causes on November 26, 1987, at the UCLA Medical Center. He was 90 years old. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, his daughter, Joan S. MeGuire, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. In 1924, Guilford entered the PhD program at Cornell University, where he studied with such giants in the history of psychology as E. B. Titchener, Kurt Kottka, Harry Helson, and Karl Dallenbach. Guilford immersed himself in psychophysics and other classical topics in the experimental psychology of the times, publishing 5 articles before earning a PhD degree in 1927. His doctoral thesis showed that variations in reported sensory experience with weak stimuli should not be attributed to fluctuations in attention as was commonly supposed at the time. A list of honors and awards are stated. He had a profound impact on psychology as a teacher, scientist, and writer. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Reviews the books, Relational theory and the practice of psychotherapy by Paul L. Wachtel (2009). Paul Wachtel has done it again. After writing for many years about integrating psychoanalytic, behavioral and family approaches to psychotherapy in addition to cultural issues, Wachtel has returned to his psychoanalytic origins to explicate his ideas about cyclical psychodynamics from the perspective of contemporary relational psychoanalysis. This book is an excellent way for psychotherapists unfamiliar with how psychoanalysis has changed since Freud to familiarize themselves with recent developments from a writer who does not get lost in the jargon that distances many who find psychoanalytic language lacking in clarity. Psychoanalysts will find some critiques of traditional views and expansions of ways of looking at the clinical situation. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Presents an obituary for Paul Kolers, psychologist and University of Toronto faculty member, who died of lung cancer on January 27, 1986. Kolers' early work was in vision research, and he maintained that interest throughout his career, although in his later writings he became progressively more concerned with the nature of symbolic representation and other semi-philosophical problems of mind. He contributed substantially to our knowledge of perceptual and cognitive processes, both through his trenchant analyses and critiques of current theories, and through his own imaginative experimental demonstrations and theoretical insights. Presents an obituary of Pittu Laungani (1936-2007). After receiving bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Bombay, Pittu immigrated to England in 1966. There he married and in 1983 completed his doctoral studies in experimental cross-cultural psychology at the University of London under Hans Eysenck. Specializing as a multicultural counselor, he taught at London South Bank University for over 30 years and later was named honorary senior research fellow at Manchester University. Twice he was elected president of the Institute of Health Promotion and Education, United Kingdom. Pittu leaves his wife Ann, his extended family, and many friends around the world. They remember his warmth, lively personality, courage, and trenchant observations on how our respective cultural backgrounds shape our approaches to life and death. In this rejoinder, the authors address several issues raised by R. L. Worthington and F. R. Dillon (see record 2010-26150-001) and C. R. Ridley and M. Shaw-Ridley (see record 2011-00622-001) regarding (a) the measurement of multicultural competencies (MCCs), (b) sampling considerations in multicultural research, and (c) the conceptual frame of multicultural psychotherapy research. The authors challenge the wisdom of exploring MCCs in psychotherapy research and provide a different framework to understand therapists' multicultural effectiveness with clients based on their cultural race/ethnicity. Additionally, the concept of therapists' multicultural orientation or approach is introduced to illuminate the process of aligning with clients about salient cultural issues in psychotherapy. Presents an obituary for Ellis Paul Torrance, who passed away on July, 12, 2003, after almost 60 years of research in creativity. Known as the "Father of Creativity," Paul legitimized its study with his development of the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT). This battery of standardized tests, now translated into 32 languages, provided evidence that creative potential could be quantified and increased with practice. Since their development, the TTCT have been used in over 2,000 research studies, thus demonstrating Paul's influence on creativity research in the fields of psychology and education. In this study the multicultural competencies of 141 doctoral interns at university counseling centers were explored. Results indicated that some educational variables were predictive of multicultural competencies. Interns who had received supervision for a multicultural counseling situation, attended more multicultural workshops, or taken more multicultural course work, reported greater multicultural knowledge and skills than did interns who had no such supervision, fewer workshop hours, or less course work. Only supervision provided to interns in a multicultural setting correlated significantly with multicultural awareness, thus accounting for only 3% of the variability in interns' multicultural awareness. No significant relationships were found between multicultural competencies and demographic variables. Implications of these findings are discussed in terms of training for doctoral interns and future research. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
