Japanese Black (Wagyu) cattle are characterized by an ability to consistently produce highly palatable, well-marbled beef. The Japanese utilize a unique management program which includes feeding the cattle a high roughage diet for extended periods of time, typically at least twice that of American feedlot practices. In this study, Angus steers were fed a typical US feedlot diet to the Japanese market endpoint of 680 kg. Carcasses were analyzed for marbling score, meat color and fat color by days on feed and adjusted to a common carcass weight. Results indicate that the quality traits studied did change (P < 0·05) with an increasing number of days on feed. The marbling score had a high standard error.  相似文献

The effects of feeding two levels of supplemental fat and extra milk replacer solids on Holstein calves housed in hutches during the winter were investigated. Fifty calves (10 per treatment) were assigned to the following dietary treatments: 1) milk replacer (control) reconstituted to 12.5% DM fed at 10% of BW (adjusted weekly), 2) same as treatment 1 plus 113 g/d of supplemental fat, 3) milk replacer reconstituted to 15% DM and fed at 10% of BW (adjusted weekly), 4) same as treatment 1 plus 226 g/d of supplemental fat, and 5) milk replacer reconstituted to 15% DM fed at 14% of BW (adjusted weekly). Half the amount of milk replacer consumed during wk 4 was fed during wk 5, and calves were weaned to dry feed at 35 d of age. A pelleted starter was offered for ad libitum intake throughout the 42-d trial. Gains in BW were greater for calves fed 226 than 113 or 0 g/d of supplemental fat (d 3 to 28). Calves fed milk replacer reconstituted to 15% DM at 14% of BW had greater BW gains during d 3 to 28 than control. Starter consumption was similar between groups receiving 113 and 0 g/d of fat supplement but lower in the group fed 226 g/d. Extra milk replacer solids in diets increased fecal scores to levels greater than those of calves in other groups. The benefit of fat supplementation of milk replacers was manifested as increased BW gain during the 1st mo of life.  相似文献

Five primiparous Holstein cows (483 kg BW) of low productivity were used in a 4 x 5 incomplete Latin square design to study the effects of feeding two levels of grain containing soybean meal and one level of grain containing fish meal on feed intake, milk production, digestibility, and rumen fermentation. Animals all were fed alfalfa silage for ad libitum intake. Collection of data was between wk 11 and 24 of lactation. The four treatments were an all silage diet (control), silage and medium concentrate fed at 1.8% BW containing soybean meal, and silage and low concentrate fed at 1.3% BW containing either soybean meal or fish meal. Treatments other than control were designed to give similar CP intake from the concentrate, which was based on high moisture corn and cob meal. Milk production and composition were similar among treatments except for fat percentage, which was significantly lower for low grain soybean meal. Intake of DM was higher on medium grain soybean meal compared with the other treatments. Average BW and change in BW (.11 kg/d) were not affected by treatments. Digestibility of DM was higher for cows fed grain (68 to 73%) than for those fed the control diet (60%). Generally, feeding concentrate at 1.3 or 1.8% BW and supplementing with soybean meal or fish meal resulted in pH and concentrations of NH3 N and VFA similar to those observed on the all silage diet. Feeding concentrate at 1.3 or 1.8% BW and supplying fish meal or soybean meal did not change feed utilization enough to increase milk production in low producing cows compared with an all silage diet.  相似文献

Male Holstein calves (n = 120) purchased from local dairy farms were fed one of three calf milk replacers for 42 d. Experimental milk replacers were formulated to contain whey protein concentrate (WPC) as the primary protein source or WPC plus 5% spray-dried bovine plasma (SDBP) or spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP). The SDPP was heated to remove heat-insoluble materials and provide products with similar IgG content. Calves were also fed commercial calf starter and water for ad libitum consumption. Intake, change in body weight (BW), feed efficiency, morbidity and mortality were determined. Mortality was 10, 3, and 2 in calves fed WPC, SDBP, and SDPP treatments, respectively. Morbidity, measured as the number of days that calves had diarrhea was reduced by 30% when SDBP or SDPP were fed. Calves had diarrhea for 6.9, 3.9, and 4.7 d during the 42-d study when fed commercial calf milk replacer containing WPC, SDBP, and SDPP, respectively. Fecal scores tended to be reduced and feed efficiency tended to be improved when SDBP or SDPP were fed. Mean intakes of total dry matter during the 42-d study were greater when calves were fed SDBP or SDPP and were 661, 710, and 684 g/d for calves fed WPC, SDBP, and SDPP, respectively. Mean BW gains from d0 to 42 were 231,261, and 218 g/d, respectively. Calves fed SDPP tended to have lower BW gain during the first 28 d of the study. However, difference in daily BW gain from d 1 to 28 was only 39 g/d. Inclusion of SDBP or SDPP in milk replacer reduced morbidity and mortality of milk-fed dairy calves.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare performance of calves fed acidified milk replacer or regular (sweet) milk replacer twice daily at 10% of BW. Thirty-seven female Holstein calves were fed replacers reconstituted to 12.5% DM for 4 wk, At 28 d, half of the amounts of milk replacer consumed during wk 4 were fed during wk 5 and calves weaned from replacer at d 35 age. A pelleted starter feed was offered for ad libitum access throughout the 42-d trial. Body weight was recorded at birth, d 3 of age, and weekly thereafter. Fecal consistency scores were recorded. Other parameters were measured on d 3 and 42. Average daily gains (d 3 to 42) for calves fed sweet and acidified milk replacers were .33 and .38 kg/d. Starter consumption was similar for both treatments. Calves fed acidified milk replacer (d 3 to 28) had a lower (1.4 vs. 1.6) fecal consistency score than those fed sweet milk replacer (scale of 1 to 4, 1 = normal and 4 = watery). Benefits of feeding acidified milk replacer at 10% of BW per day may be in reducing the incidence of some infectious scours, although further experiments are needed to verify this.  相似文献

Green beans (cv. Mustang) obtained from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Campaign Horticulture plots were assayed within 3 h of harvest. Beans were blanched in covered containers: conventional boiling water (1900 ml, 3 min) (BW), steam (300 ml water, 3 min) (ST), microwave heated in 1 L glass containers (60 ml water, 3 or 5 min, 700 W) (MW-3, MW-5), and microwave heated in 1 L Seal-a-MealTM bags (45 ml water, 3 min) (MW-Bag). Baseline data were collected immediately after blanching. Aliquots were frozen at – 18C for 4 weeks. Unblanched beans had 82 units of peroxidase activity/min; activity was zero immediately after all blanching treatments. Reduced ascorbic acid (RAA) content was highest for unblanched, ST and MW-5 beans and lowest for BW and MW-Bag beans immediately after blanching. ST beans retained 100% of original RAA. Instron shear force (kg) was highest for unblanched beans and lowest for BW and MW-Bag beans immediately after blanching. After frozen storage, ST and BW beans had the lowest shear values. Visual color was poorest for MW-5; other treatments were not different. Microwave blanching green beans for 3 min in a covered container or bag prior to 4 weeks frozen storage resulted in a product that was not different in RAA content, retention or color from BW blanched beans; however, these samples differed in tenderness and crispness from boiling water blanched beans.  相似文献

Image processing techniques were developed to predict cooked-beef tenderness from fresh-beef image characteristics. Cattle from different finishing treatments were processed in a commercial plant. Two short loin steaks were sampled from each carcass; one used for sensory evaluation and the other for imaging. The samples varied significantly in both US quality grades and sensory tenderness scores. Color, marbling and texture features were extracted from the beef images. Statistical and neural network analyses were performed to relate the image features to sensory tenderness scores. Image texture features were found to be useful indicators of beef tenderness. Partial least squares and neural network models were able to predict beef tenderness from color, marbling and image texture features to R(2)-values up to 0.70.  相似文献

Sixty-six Holstein male calves [42 ± 6.0 kg of body weight (BW) and 12 ± 3.1 d of age] were housed individually and allocated to 1 of 4 treatments following a 2 × 2 factorial complete randomized design to assess the potential interaction between milk replacer (MR) allowance and fat content in the starter feed. Thus, 4 treatments were evaluated: a low-fat (4.1% fat; LF) starter feed offered along with 4 L/d of MR (4LF), a high-fat (11.2% fat; HF) starter feed plus 4 L/d of MR (4HF), a LF starter feed offered with 6 L/d of MR (6LF), and an HF starter feed offered with 6 L/d of MR (6HF). Calves were fed either 4 or 6 L/d of MR (25% crude protein and 19.2% fat) in 2 offers (0800 and 1630 h) and had ad libitum access to either an LF or an HF starter feed (21.4 and 22.3% crude protein). Calves were weaned at wk 6 of study by halving the daily MR allowance for 1 wk. Individual MR and starter feed intakes were recorded daily and BW was determined weekly. A glucose tolerance test was performed on d 30 of study to evaluate the effects of increased energy provision on glucose metabolism. Apparent feed digestibility was measured for the last 5 d of study. Overall, fat content of starter feed had no effect on solid feed intake. However, during wk 8 of study (after weaning), calves in the LF treatment had greater starter feed intake than HF calves. Calves on 6 L/d of MR had greater BW than calves fed 4 L/d from the second week of study until weaning. After weaning, 6LF calves had lesser BW than 6HF calves. Calves on 6 L/d of MR had greater average daily gain than calves fed 4 L/d, and 6HF calves tended to have the greatest average daily gain. Glucose clearance rate tended to be lesser for HF than for LF calves. In conclusion, offering 6 L/d of MR increased growth performance before weaning and, when offering 6 L/d of MR, feeding a high-fat starter feed resulted in the greatest BW after weaning.  相似文献

Milk consumption, dry feed intake, body weight (BW) gain, occurrence of diarrhea, and selected blood metabolites were studied in female Holstein calves fed milk either through conventional or step-down (STEP) methods. In conventional method, the calves (n = 20) were fed colostrum and then milk at the rate of 10% of BW for the entire period of 45 d. In STEP method, the calves (n = 20) were given colostrum and then milk for 25 d at the rate of 20% of BW, which was reduced (between d 26 to 30) to 10% of BW for the remaining 15 d. The calves fed through conventional and STEP methods were weaned gradually by diluting milk with water between d 46 and 50. Feed intake and BW of the calves were monitored until 90 d of age. The STEP calves consumed 92.3, 19.4, and 62.4% more milk than conventionally fed calves during pre-STEP (d 1 to 30), post-STEP (d 31 to 50), and preweaning (d 1 to 50) periods, respectively. Consumption of starter and hay were greater during the pre-STEP period and lesser during the post-STEP and postweaning (d 51 to 90) periods in calves provided milk using conventional method compared with STEP-fed calves. Body weight gain, dry matter intake, and feed efficiency of calves were greater in those on the STEP method than on the conventional method. Lesser blood glucose and greater blood urea nitrogen at weaning (d 50) and postweaning (d 60) possibly indicated a better functioning rumen in calves fed milk through The STEP method than those fed conventionally. Occurrence of diarrhea was higher during wk 3 and 4 of age in calves fed milk through conventional method compared with STEP-fed calves. In conclusion, STEP milk feeding may prevent the problems of depressed solid feed intake associated with ad libitum milk feeding and of poor BW gain with conventional milk feeding in dairy calves.  相似文献

Eighty-four Holstein calves were assigned at 2 d of age to one of three treatments: 1) control with no additives; 2) 10 g of a mixed microbial concentrate containing Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus lactis, and Bacillus subtilis; or 3) 10 g of a B. subtilis concentrate. The microbial concentrates were mixed with milk replacer during the a.m. feeding. The milk replacer was offered twice daily at 5% BW per feeding; the reconstituted replacer contained 12.5% DM. Volume of replacer fed was based on initial weight of calf and held constant until weaning. Water and starter ration were offered for ad libitum intake throughout the trial. Calves were weaned abruptly at 30 d of age and received only water and starter from d 31 to 44. General health and performance of all calves were good. Although differences in weight gain and feed efficiency were not significant, the B. subtilis concentrate tended to have a positive effect on feed efficiency during wk 1 to 4 and on immediate postweaning gain. A higher fecal bacilli count at 6 wk in calves fed the microbial concentrates may be related to their tendency for improved gain during d 31 to 44, the immediate postweaning period.  相似文献

Our objective was to evaluate growth performance, nutrient utilization, and health of calves supplemented with condensed whey solubles (CWS). Twenty-four Holstein calves (2 d old) in hutches were used in a 12-wk randomized complete block design study. Calves were blocked by birth date and sex. Treatments were (1) control (CON) with no supplement and (2) 50 g/d of CWS. Preweaning CWS was fed with milk and postweaning CWS was top-dressed on starter pellets. Calves were fed 2.83 L of pasteurized milk 2×/d during wk 1 to 5, 1×/d in wk 6, and weaned at d 42. Calves had ad libitum access to starter pellets and water. Individual intakes of milk and starter pellets were measured daily. Fecal scores (0 = firm, 3 = watery) and respiratory scores (healthy ≤3, sick ≥5), calculated from the sum of scores for rectal temperature, cough, ocular, and nasal discharge, were recorded daily. Body weights (BW), frame growth, and jugular blood samples were taken once every week at 3 h after the morning feeding. Fecal grab samples were collected in wk 12 for analysis of apparent total-tract digestibility. Data were analyzed using MIXED procedures of SAS 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC) with repeated measures. Total dry matter intake was greater in calves fed CWS compared with CON. Calves fed CWS tended to have greater BW during the postweaning period. Gain:feed, average daily gains, withers heights, and concentrations of plasma urea nitrogen were not different. Concentrations of plasma β-hydroxybutyrate were greater in calves fed CWS compared with CON. Serum glucose concentrations were greater in calves fed CON during the preweaning stage, but similar concentrations were found between treatments during the postweaning stage. Rumen pH, ammonia-N, and total volatile fatty acids were similar between treatments. The acetate:propionate ratio was greater in calves fed CWS. The apparent total-tract digestion of nutrients was similar; however, CON tended to have greater digestion of neutral detergent fiber. Fecal scores were not different, but a treatment by week interaction was observed. Supplementing CWS improved starter intake, postweaning BW, β-hydroxybutyrate, fecal scores, and maintained frame growth.  相似文献

Growth of the corn ethanol industry has created a need for alternatives to corn for lactating dairy cows. Concurrent expansion in soydiesel production is expected to increase availability and promote favorable pricing for glycerol, a primary co-product material. The objective of this study was to determine the feeding value of glycerol as a replacement for corn in diets fed to lactating dairy cattle. Sixty lactating Holstein cows housed in individual tie stalls were fed a base diet consisting of corn silage, legume forages, corn grain, soyhulls, roasted soybeans, and protein supplements. After a 2-wk acclimation period, cows were fed diets containing 0, 5, 10, or 15% refined glycerol for 56 d. Cows were milked twice daily and weekly milk samples were collected. Milk production was 36.3, 37.2, 37.9, and 36.2 ± 1.6 kg/d and feed intake was 23.8, 24.6, 24.8, and 24.0 ± 0.7 kg/d for 0, 5, 10, and 15% glycerol treatments, respectively, and did not differ except for a modest reduction in feed intake during the first 7 d of the trial for 15% glycerol (treatment × time effect). Milk composition was not altered by glycerol feeding except that milk urea nitrogen was decreased from 12.5 ± 0.4 to 10.2 ± 0.4 mg/dL with glycerol addition. Cows fed diets containing 10 and 15% glycerol gained more weight than those fed rations containing 0 or 5% glycerol but body condition scores did not differ with glycerol feeding. The data indicate that glycerol is a suitable replacement for corn grain in diets for lactating dairy cattle and that it may be included in rations to a level of at least 15% of dry matter without adverse effects on milk production or milk composition.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate 3 milk replacer (MR) feeding programs on calf performance to 4 mo of age. Male Holstein calves (n = 48; 2–3 d old) were randomly assigned to either a moderate rate of MR (MOD; 0.66 kg/d for 39 d, then 0.33 kg/d for 3 d), an ad libitum rate of MR (ADLIB; offered twice daily between 0630 and 0830 h and between 1430 and 1630 h for 35 d, 0.66 kg/d for 4 d, and 0.33 kg/d for 3 d), or a step-up rate of MR (STEPUP; increased from 0.32 to 0.62 kg/d in first 12 d, 0.66 kg/d for 27 d, and 0.33 kg/d for 3 d). The MR (25% CP, 18% fat) was fed twice daily to d 39 and once daily thereafter. During the nursery phase (0–56 d), calves were housed in individual pens and offered textured starter (40% starch, 21% CP on a DM basis) and water ad libitum. Calf body weight (BW) was measured initially and weekly thereafter. Hip widths (HW) were measured initially and every 2 wk thereafter. In the grower phase, (57–112 d), calves were grouped by previous treatment and moved to group pens (4 calves/pen). The same starter used in the nursery phase was blended with 5% chopped grass hay and offered ad libitum. Calf BW and HW were measured on d 56, 84, and 112. Total MR intake per calf averaged 27, 51, and 25 kg for MOD, ADLIB, and STEPUP programs, respectively, with a range of 42 to 63 kg for ADLIB. In the nursery phase, starter intake and feed efficiency were less for ADLIB versus MOD, whereas fecal scores and abnormal fecal score days were greater for calves fed ADLIB versus MOD. Calves fed STEPUP had lesser average daily gain than calves fed MOD. During the grower phase, initial BW was greater for ADLIB versus MOD, though final BW was not different between MOD and ADLIB or STEPUP. Calves previously fed MOD had greater average daily gain, feed efficiency, and HW change than calves fed ADLIB. In this study, feed efficiency was lower when MR was fed ad libitum, and growth advantages observed at 2 mo were lost by 4 mo of age.  相似文献

Much research has been conducted and published about metabolic modifiers that increase growth rate, improve feed efficiency, increase carcass leanness, and decrease carcass fatness. Most of these metabolic modifiers have been developed to improve efficiency and profitability of livestock production and to improve carcass composition, with fewer of them developed and researched specifically to improve meat quality. Some of the metabolic modifiers can have negative effects on visual and sensory meat quality, especially when not used as recommended. This review evaluates the various kinds of metabolic modifiers that have been researched for their effects on production efficiency, carcass composition, and meat quality. Nutritional composition of meat generally is improved from use of most of the metabolic modifiers, visual quality is improved by others, but some can have a negative effect on marbling and tenderness. Anabolic steroid implants are very cost effective and practical for beef cattle production but aggressive implants used within 70 days of slaughter or too frequent use of them will reduce tenderness and marbling. Somatatropin and approved β-agonists are very effective in improving growth performance and carcass leanness in pigs, and β-agonists are effective in cattle, but improper use of them can have negative effects on marbling and tenderness. Feeding supplemental levels of vitamin E is quite beneficial for improving meat color and shelf-life of beef, lamb, and pork, whereas not supplementing diets with vitamin A has potential for improving marbling in cattle. Immunocastration shows promise for capitalizing on the efficiency of muscle growth of young boars up to a few weeks before slaughter, at which time boar taint is prevented and marbling is improved by immunocastration. Potential exists for improving the fatty acid profile of lipids and increasing conjugated linoleic acid content in beef through dietary manipulation. Supplementing swine diets with conjugated linoleic acid can improve carcass composition of swine, but is not yet cost effective to use. Dietary inclusion of magnesium, manganese, or chromium in diets of pigs and sheep has potential to improve meat color and water-holding capacity. Although, not all of these metabolic modifiers are approved in all countries, proper use of the ones that are approved offers opportunities for economically improving production efficiency and carcass leanness while maintaining acceptable marbling and tenderness, while some provide opportunities to enhance meat color and quality.  相似文献

American Wagyu × Angus steers (n = 15) and heifers (n = 26) were finished to typical Japanese market weight and degree of finish using two different feeding methods. The first method (deferred) consisted of two growing/ finishing phases: a forage-based diet for approximately 8 months followed by a high concentrate diet fed ad libitum for an additional 8 months while the second finishing method (linear) was designed to produce a linear rate of gain for the entire 16 months that the cattle were on feed. Even though there were substantial differences in daily weight gain (P < 0.05) within the two growing/finishing phases, total weight gain for the entire 16 months was not different between the two feeding methods (P > 0.05). Cattle produced by the linear growth method were superior to deferred growth cattle for carcass weight (as estimated by cold left side weight), rib thickness, dressing percentage, marbling score, fat color, fat luster, fat quality, as well as in scores for meat color, brightness, firmness and texture (P < 0.05). Fat thickness was not affected by treatment (P > 0.05). These data indicate that the linear method of production is more consistent with producing carcasses for the Japanese beef market.  相似文献

The ability of dairy cattle to adapt to changes in nutrient intake requires appropriately responsive expression of several key genes in liver. Holstein cows were used in 2 experiments to determine the effect of short-term feed restriction on expression of mRNA for gluconeogenic and ureagenic enzymes in liver. In experiment 1, cows were fed a total mixed diet for ad libitum intake for a 5-d period followed by 5 d of 50% of their previous 5-d ad libitum intake followed by 10 d of ad libitum feeding. Liver biopsies and blood samples were obtained on d 5, 10, and 20 of the experiment, the last day of each feeding period. Pyruvate carboxylase (PC) mRNA increased with feed restriction, but phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) was unchanged. Expression of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase (CPS-I), argininosuccinate synthetase, and ornithine transcarbamylase mRNA were not altered by feed restriction; however, CPS-I mRNA expression tended to increase during realimentation. In experiment 2, cows were fed for ad libitum intake for 5 d and then fed 50% of previous intake for 5 d. Liver biopsy samples collected on d 5 and 10 were used for PC mRNA, PEPCK mRNA, and in vitro measure of gluconeogenesis from radiolabelled propionate and lactate. The data indicate expression of genes for key metabolic processes in liver of lactating cows is responsive to feeding level. Expression of PC mRNA is part of the adaptive response to feed intake restriction and is matched by increased capacity for gluconeogenesis from lactate.  相似文献

Corn processing methods including finely ground (FGC), dry rolled (DRC), and crumbled corn (CRC) were evaluated to determine their effects on average daily gain (ADG), structural growth, starch digestibility, feeding behavior, and blood metabolites of young dairy heifers. In this study, 36 Holstein heifers [91 ± 4 d of age, 105 ± 6.5 kg of body weight (BW); mean ± standard deviation] housed in 9 pens (4 heifers per pen) were fed diets (dry matter basis) containing 20% forage (wheat straw) and 80% corn-based concentrate for 60 d. Pens were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 dietary treatments based on the type of corn grain used for the diets: (1) ground corn (FGC; fine: 1.11 ± 0.52 mm); (2) dry-rolled corn (DRC; 2.30 ± 0.68 mm); and (3) crumbled corn (CRC; 2.54 ± 0.70 mm). Heifers had ad libitum access to diets and water throughout the experiment and the feed intake was measured daily. Animals were weighed at the beginning (91 d of age) and end (151 d of age) of the study. The ADG (kg of BW/d) was calculated at the end of experiment at an individual level. Feeding behavior was recorded based on direct observation by monitoring each heifer every 5 min during a 22-h period at 150 d of age. The CRC and DRC tended to increase feed intake compared with FGC, whereas heifers fed CRC tended to have a greater withers height compared with other treatments. Feed efficiency was not affected; however, ADG and final BW increased in heifers fed the CRC diet compared with other diets. Feeding CRC increased total-tract starch digestibility compared with FGC and DRC diets (97.8 vs. 93.1 and 89.5%, respectively). Compared with FGC diet, feeding DRC and CRC tended to increase rumination time. The molar proportion of propionate was greater, and the molar proportion of acetate and acetate-to-propionate ratio were lower in heifers fed CRC than in those fed DRC. The blood glucose and insulin-like growth factor concentrations increased in heifers fed CRC compared with feeding DRC; however, blood urea concentrations decreased by CRC feeding. In conclusion, thermal processing (CRC diet) improved total-tract starch digestibility, ADG, feed intake, and skeletal growth, but had no effect on feed efficiency during the experimental period. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of crude protein (CP) content of starter feed and wheat straw (WS) processing on growth performance, digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and behavior of Holstein calves. Sixty calves (28 male and 32 female) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments in a randomized complete block design. Treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement were (1) lower-CP ground starter feed mixed with alkali-processed WS (LP-PWS), (2) lower-CP ground starter feed mixed with unprocessed WS (LP-WS), (3) higher-CP ground starter feed mixed with alkali-processed WS (HP-PWS), and (4) higher-CP ground starter feed mixed with unprocessed WS (HP-WS). Wheat straw was fed at 4.75% of dry matter (DM), and low-protein (LP) and high-protein (HP) starter feed contained 19.5 and 23.5% CP, respectively. The calves were weaned on d 60 and remained in the study until d 75. During the experiment, the calves received 4.2 kg of whole milk per day and had free access to fresh water and starter feed. The interaction between WS processing and protein content of starter tended to be significant for starter feed intake, average daily gain (ADG), and body weight (BW); calves fed HP-PWS tended to have greater ADG and final BW than other treatments. The results showed that feeding HP ground starter feed increased ADG and feed efficiency compared with LP groups during the preweaning and the overall periods. Moreover, weaning and final BW were higher in HP-fed calves than in LP-fed calves. Apparent digestibilities of acid detergent fiber (ADF), starch, and CP were greater in calves fed HP than in calves fed LP starter feed. The HP ground starter feed increased rumen propionate and ammonia concentrations. Wheat straw processing had no effect on intake and growth of calves but increased DM, ADF, and neutral detergent fiber digestibilities and decreased ruminal pH. Using processed wheat straw (PWS) mixed with starter feed tended to decrease rumination time and ruminal acetate concentration in calves. Final body barrel and withers height tended to be greater in calves fed PWS. Overall, the results indicated that HP content of ground starter feed (23.5%) could be recommended for Holstein calves. Furthermore, PWS inclusion in the ground starter diet increased fiber digestibility but had no effect on calf performance. Moreover, calves fed HP-PWS had greater ADG and final BW than other treatments.  相似文献

Objectives were to examine the effects of feeding to alter body condition at calving on subsequent full lactation production performance and feed intake, on BW and periparturient blood traits, and on complete energy and N balances and ration digestibility during wk 6, 10, and 14 postpartum. Thirty pluriparous Holstein cows were assigned randomly to two energy intakes from wk 33 of previous lactation through the dry period to create either normal (7.2) or thin (5.8) mean body condition scores at calving (9 = fat, 1 = thin). The thin group was fed 0 kg hominy feed daily; the normal group was fed 2.7 kg daily to supplement forage DM available ad libitum during this period. When compared with the normal group, cows in the thin condition group exhibited less negative body fat balance (-206 vs. -507 g/d); similar milk yield, DM intake, N partitions, and nutrient digestibilities; and lower fat test (3.2 vs. 4.1%) during the balance measurements. Whole blood and serum traits were within normal physiological ranges. Full lactation measurements were similar between treatments except that milk fat percentage was lower and DM intake (as percentage of BW), was higher in the thin condition group. Although mean BW at calving was more (651 vs. 599 kg) for normal condition cows, condition scores and BW were not significantly different at 14 wk postpartum; BW curves indicated similar rates of recovery of weight thereafter. Cows considered underconditioned at parturition mobilized less body fat after calving, resulting in reduced milk fat concentration without significant effects on milk yield, protein, SNF, DM intake, or nutrient utilization.  相似文献

This study compared conventional and intensified milk replacer feeding regimens on growth, intake, respiratory and fecal scores, vaccination response, and neutrophil mRNA levels. Holstein calves were randomly assigned to a 10-wk study on d 2 of life. Treatments were conventional (CON; n=8) and intensified (INT; n=7) milk replacer feeding programs. Conventional calves were fed a 20.8% crude protein and 21.0% fat milk replacer at 1.25% of birth body weight (BW) from wk 1 to 6 of life and 0.625% of birth BW during wk 7. A 29.3% crude protein and 16.2% fat milk replacer was fed to INT calves at 1.5% of birth BW during wk 1, 2% of current BW from wk 2 to 6, and 1% of current BW during wk 7. All calves were given milk replacer twice daily during wk 1 to 6, once daily during wk 7, and were weaned completely during wk 8. Calf starter intake was measured daily through wk 8. Body weight and withers height were measured weekly. Fecal and respiratory scores were recorded twice daily at feeding. Calves were vaccinated against ovalbumin at the end of wk 1, 3, and 5. Blood samples were collected at the end of wk 1, 3, 5, and 8 for analysis of serum anti-ovalbumin IgG concentration and for isolation of neutrophils. Quantitative PCR was used to measure neutrophil mRNA levels of 7 functionality genes. Treatment did not affect total DMI or anti-ovalbumin IgG response. Intensified milk replacer feeding increased average daily gain, protein intake, fat intake, and feed efficiency compared with the CON feeding program. Compared with CON calves, INT calves had greater fecal scores, indicating looser feces and greater respiratory scores, indicating more respiratory problems. Calves assigned to the INT treatment had increased neutrophil mRNA levels of L-selectin, and at wk 8, neutrophil cytosolic factor 1 was increased and toll-like receptor 4 tended to be increased compared with CON calves. This suggests greater activation of neutrophils in INT calves postweaning, but differences were relatively small and levels of the other 4 genes were unaffected. An INT milk replacer feeding program increased growth, fecal scores, and respiratory scores preweaning, increased mRNA levels of 2 neutrophil genes postweaning, and did not affect vaccination response.  相似文献
