Emphasis by dairy producers on various yield and fitness traits when culling cows was documented for US Holstein calvings since 1982. Least squares differences between cows retained for additional parities and those culled were estimated for milk, fat, and protein yields; somatic cell score (SCS); days open (DO); dystocia score (DS), final score (FS), and 14 type traits. Compared with cows culled during first lactation, superiority for first-parity milk yield was 569 to 1,175 kg for cows with 2 lactations, 642 to 1,283 kg for cows with ≥2 lactations, 710 to 1,350 kg for cows with 3 lactations, and 663 to 1,331 kg for cows with ≥4 lactations. Cows retained for ≥2 lactations had first-parity SCS that were 0.34 to 0.62 lower (more favorable) than those of cows culled during first lactation; first-parity SCS for cows retained for 3 or ≥4 lactations were even more favorable than those of cows with 1 or 2 lactations. The negative genetic relationship between yield and fertility contributed to increased DO as selection for higher milk yield persisted across time despite considerable preference for early conception when culling cows. In 1982, cows retained in the herd for 2, 3, and ≥4 lactations conceived earlier during first lactation (19, 17, and 23 fewer DO, respectively) than those culled during first lactation; those differences had increased to 34, 41, and 52 fewer DO by 2000. Although DS has a negative relationship with survival, first-parity DS were only slightly lower (by 0.10 to 0.14) for survivors than for cows culled during first lactation. Cows retained for ≥2 lactations had greater first-parity FS by 1.4 to 1.9 points than those culled during first lactation. On a standardized basis, the most intense selection during first lactation was for milk and protein yields with less for fat (74 to 86% of that for milk), DO (18 to 74%), FS (22 to 38%), SCS (19 to 37%), and DS (7 to 15%). Producers continued to emphasize the same traits when culling during second and third lactations. Trait priority by producers during culling could aid in setting trait emphasis when selecting bulls for progeny test and could also be useful in developing software for index-based culling guides. 相似文献

Correlations between parities for milk yield, fat yield, and days in milk were calculated across and within does for five breeds of United States dairy goats; Alpine, LaMancha, Saanen, and Toggenburg, using lactation records to January 1981. Records were initiated during 1966 through 1979 and had between 125 and 305 d in milk. Parities were first through fourth, and fifth or greater. Overall phenotypic correlations between the three lactation traits averaged across breed were .95 between milk and fat yield and about .60 between milk or fat yield and days in milk. Within-herd phenotypic partial correlations between parities 1 and 2 (the two parities with most data) averaged .47 for milk yield, .42 for fat yield, and .07 for days in milk. Components of variance due to herd averaged about 34% for milk yield and for fat yield and 23% for days in milk. Components of variance due to doe/herd averaged 28% for milk yield, 25% for fat yield, and 17% for days in milk. The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters for fertility of Brown Swiss cattle, considering reproductive measures in different parities as different traits, and to estimate relationships between production traits of first lactation and fertility of heifers and first-parity and second-parity cows. Reproductive indicators were interval from parturition to first service, interval from first service to conception, interval from parturition to conception, number of inseminations to conception, conception rate at first service, and nonreturn rate at 56 d after first service. Production traits were peak milk yield (pMY), lactation milk yield, and lactation length (LL). Data included 37,546 records on heifers, and 24,098 and 15,653 records on first- and second-parity cows, respectively. Cows were reared in 2,035 herds, calved from 1999 to 2007, and were progeny of 527 AI bulls. Gibbs sampling was implemented to obtain (co)variance components using both univariate and bivariate threshold and censored linear sire models. Estimates of heritability for reproductive traits in heifers (0.016 to 0.026) were lower than those in first-parity (0.017 to 0.142) and second-parity (0.026 to 0.115) cows. Genetic correlations for fertility in first- and second-parity cows were very high (>0.920), whereas those between heifers and lactating cows were moderate (0.348 to 0.709). The latter result indicates that fertility in heifers is a different trait than fertility in lactating cows, and hence it cannot be used as robust indicator of cow fertility. Heifer fertility was not related to production traits in first lactation (genetic correlations between −0.215 and 0.251). Peak milk yield exerted a moderate and unfavorable effect on the interval from parturition to first service (genetic correlations of 0.414 and 0.353 after first and second calving, respectively), and a low and unfavorable effect on other fertility traits (genetic correlations between −0.281 and 0.295). Infertility after first calving caused a strong elongation of the lactation, and LL was negatively correlated with fertility of cows after second calving, so that LL can itself be regarded as a measure of fertility. Lactation milk yield depends on both pMY and LL, and, as such, is a cause and consequence of (in)fertility. 相似文献

Several research reports have indicated increasing dairy cow mortality in recent years. The objectives of this research were to characterize the phenotypic differences in mortality in the first 3 parities across 3 regions of the United States to estimate the heritability of mortality of Holstein cows across regions and parities, and to estimate genetic and environmental correlations between milk yield and mortality across parities and regions. Dairy Herd Information (DHI) milk yield and mortality data were obtained from 3 different US regions: the Southeast (SE), Southwest (SW), and Northeast (NE). A total of 3,522,824 records for the first 3 parities were used: 732,009 (SE), 656,768 (SW), and 2,134,047 (NE) from 1999 to 2008. Cows that received a termination code of 6—“Cow died on the dairy; downer cows that were euthanized should be included here”—were given a mortality score of 2 (dead), whereas all other codes were assigned a mortality score of 1 (alive). Average annual mortalities in the first 3 parities across regions ranged from 2.2 to 7.2%, with mortality frequency increasing with increasing parity across all regions and with the SE having the highest mortality frequency. For genetic analysis, a 2-trait (305-d milk yield and mortality) linear-threshold animal model that fitted fixed effects of herd-year (for 305-d milk yield), cow age, days in milk (in month classes), month-of-termination, and random effects of herd-year (for mortality), animal, and residual was implemented. The model was used to estimate variance components separately for each region and parity. Heritability estimates for mortality were similar for all regions and parities, ranging from 0.04 to 0.07. Genetic correlations between mortality and 305-d milk yield across the first 3 parities were 0.14, 0.20, and 0.29 in SE; −0.01, 0.01, and 0.31 in SW; and 0.28, 0.33, and 0.19 in NE. We detected an adverse genetic relationship between milk production and mortality; however, the moderate magnitudes of the genetic correlations suggest that indices that include both milk yield and mortality could be effective in identifying sires that would provide opportunities for minimizing death loss even when selecting for increased milk yield. 相似文献

Freestall housing for dairy cows has many different layouts and the space allocated for cows differs considerably. The objective of the present study was to investigate possible associations between barn layout and milk yield for different parities in small dairy freestall barns. Layouts of 204 Norwegian freestall barns constructed during the period from 1995 to 2005, and with a mean herd size of 42.7 ± 15.5 cows, were obtained and merged with milk yield data and calving interval, for each parity, from the Norwegian Milk Recording System (NDHRS). The milk yield data set contained 20,221 different lactations from these 204 herds. Both simple mixed models, including the different explanatory variables one by one together with parity, calving interval, and herd as random effect, and a final mixed model, including all significant explanatory variables, were created. According to variables tested in this study, the final mixed model estimates show that only primiparous cows benefit significantly from increased free space allocation. Milk yield was generally higher in automatic milking system barns compared with that in barns with milking parlors, but not for primiparous cows. Milk yield was higher for all parities for barns using separation pens in accordance with the recommendations. Barns with 2 or more dead-end alleys had lower milk yield compared with that from layouts without dead-end alleys. Primiparous cows benefited from water troughs located for easy access and responded with increased milk yield. In 10% of the barns, the water trough capacity was less than 47% of the recommendations, and all parities benefited from a water trough capacity higher than this level. Higher parities had increased milk yield when water trough capacity was more than 80%. Feed bunk space, number of freestall rows, and the location of freestalls had no significant effect on the milk yield. The present study showed that increased space and improved access to water is beneficial to primiparous cows, whereas layouts without dead-end alleys and improved water capacity is beneficial for all cows in freestall systems. 相似文献

Methyl viologen (MV) causes severe oxidative stress by generating superoxide in the photosystem. The marine Chlamydomonas strain W80 is highly tolerant to MV (inhibitory concentration 50% [IC??]=110 μM), and another marine Chlamydomonas strain HS5 shows also relatively a high tolerance (IC??=12 μM). These two marine strains and a freshwater Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, which is highly sensitive to MV (IC??=0.03 μM), were compared with respect to their reactive oxygen species (ROS) eliminating enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase), intracellular free amino acids, and antioxidant activities of the cell extracts. The marked difference between the marine Chlamydomonas strains and C. reinhardtii is the much higher (more than 5 fold) ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity in the marine strains. The marine strains also kept the high APX activities (more than 100% of non-stressed condition) under the MV stressed condition, while the APX activity in C. reinhardtii was significantly decreased (36% of non-stressed condition) under the stressed condition, indicating that APX activity potentially contributes to the oxidative stress tolerance in Chlamydomonas. In addition, the levels of intracellular free proline, which is supposed to ameliorate oxidative stress, were several tens of times higher in the marine Chlamydomonas strains than in C. reinhardtii. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate relationships between reproductive traits in heifers and cows and yield traits for Holsteins in Japan. Insemination and lactation records for cows calved between 1990 and 2003 in Hokkaido region were obtained. Age at first service, age at conception, and conception rate for first service were calculated for heifers. Days from calving to first service, days open, and conception rate for first service were calculated for first- and second-parity cows. The yield traits used were 305-d milk, fat, and protein yields. A threshold animal model was applied for the conception rate for first service, and a linear animal model was applied for the other traits. Single-trait and 2-trait genetic analyses were performed by the Bayesian method using Gibbs sampling. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.027 to 0.051 for conception rate for first service, and from 0.074 to 0.128 for the other reproductive traits. If the relationships of other traits were not considered, days from calving to first service was favorable to genetic selection for reproductive traits because of relatively high heritability and because it can be available earlier than the days open. Genetic correlations among reproductive traits were high, especially in cows. The genetic correlations between reproductive traits for heifers and those for cows were lower than the genetic correlations between reproductive traits for first parity and those of second parity, suggesting that reproductive traits for heifers should be evaluated separately from reproductive traits for cows. Genetic correlations between yield and reproductive traits in cows were antagonistic. In contrast, genetic correlations between reproductive traits for heifers and yield traits were slightly desirable. Depending on the reporting rate of insemination records for heifers and the results of investigations for relationships with productive maturity, selection by reproductive traits for heifers will enable the improvement of reproductive performance without a loss in genetic progress for yield traits. 相似文献

A total of 471 Listeria monocytogenes isolates from different types of food and food-related sources in Poland during 2004-2010 were examined. This number includes 200 isolates from fish, 144 from fresh and frozen vegetables, 43 ready-to-eat products (deli foods, cold cuts), 13 from dairy products, 16 from raw meats, 15 from confectionery products and 40 directly from processing plants. All isolates were subjected to serotyping and lineage assays using PCR, and antimicrobial susceptibility using E-test and a broth microdilution method. Of all isolates, 256 (54.4%), 120 (25.5%), 59 (12.5%), 36 (7.6%) were identified as serotypes 1/2a (or 3a), 1/2c (or 3c), 1/2b (or 3b or 7), and 4b (or 4d or 4e), respectively. A direct correlation between the most common serotypes and three L. monocytogenes lineages was also observed. All L. monocytogenes isolates belonged to lineages I (20.2%) and II (79.8%). All strains were sensitive to ampicillin, amoxicillin, gentamicin, erythromycin, trimethoprim, rifampicin, vancomycin, chloramphenicol and sulfamethoxazol. Two of the L. monocytogenes strains (0.42%) showed phenotypic resistance. One strain was resistant to tetracycline and minocycline due to the presence of tet(M). It did not carry gene int, which may indicate that the tet(M) gene in this strain was not integrated in the transposon Tn916-Tn1545 family. The resistance of the second strain to ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin was attributed to active efflux associated with overexpression of gene lde. Our data indicate the low prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among L. monocytogenes isolates from food and food-related sources in Poland. 相似文献

Several approaches for analysis of survival in the first three lactations were compared using data from approximately 700,000 Canadian Holsteins. Two approaches (linear model and threshold model) were used to analyze a binary measure of survival. Other approaches were survival analyses to evaluate two measures of the number of days that cows were in milk during their first three lactations. One measure restricted days per lactation to < or = 305; the other was based on the actual number of days in milk without an upper limit on days per lactation. Variance components and breeding values (EBV) were estimated. Sire models were used almost exclusively, but one set of EBV was obtained using a linear animal model. Effects in the models were herd-year of calving, age at first calving, interaction of several factors related to herd, and production. Thus, all EBV were for functional herd life. Heritabilities were approximately 0.04, 0.07, and 0.10 from linear, threshold, and survival analyses, respectively. Correlations among sire EBV from all analyses using sire models were high, particularly for linear and threshold models (0.98). In contrast, correlations of EBV from sire models with EBV from the linear animal model were less than 0.90, regardless of the approach taken. In Canada, the current linear animal model remains in use for sire evaluation of herd life, but research with survival analyses will continue. 相似文献

The impact of different breeding goals on the genetic response for calving ease (CE) and yield traits was studied in the Basque Holstein cattle population. The economic value for CE was estimated with a bioeconomic model, using Basque production and market circumstances and taking into account the categorical nature of CE. The economic value for CE was −€18.03/cow per calving interval per liability unit. This value was relatively insensitive to changes in the market price of animals but was more sensitive to changes in the incidence of dystocia. Records from parities between 1995 and 2002 were used for the estimation of genetic parameters for yield (actual milk, fat, and protein yield) and CE using a multivariate model. Linear sire models for yield traits and a threshold sire-maternal grandsire model for CE were used. A Holstein population was simulated to determine the consequences of including CE in the breeding goal. Three selection strategies were considered: 1) selection only on yield traits, 2) selection on yield and direct CE (DCE), and 3) selection on yield, DCE, and maternal CE (MCE). Selection on yield traits only resulted in a slight reduction of dystocia. Selection strategies in which DCE or DCE and MCE were included in the breeding goal did not improve the genetic response for DCE and MCE obtained with the first selection strategy. Genetic responses were also calculated using the 2.5th, 50th, and 97.5th percentiles of posterior densities of genetic correlations between DCE and MCE and yield traits. Because responses in CE were sensitive to deviations in estimates of genetic parameters, the inclusion of CE in the monitoring scheme is recommended. Genetic evaluation of bulls for CE is of considerable value because it provides farmers with the opportunity to use assortative matings of sires with favorable estimated breeding values for DCE to primiparous cows. 相似文献

The objectives of this study were to test for heterogeneity of genetic and environmental variance among completed and extended records from different lactations or different days in milk (DIM) and to build a model that accounts for this heterogeneity. A total of 147,457 305-d milk yield records from Danish Jersey cows calving between 1984 and early 1999 from two regions of Denmark were used in this study. Results showed that DIM and parity influenced parameters estimated from an animal model with repeated records. Therefore, the data were analyzed using random-regression models that allow the covariance between measurements to change gradually with DIM and parity. Random regressions were fitted for additive genetic effects and permanent environmental effects using second- or third-order normalized Legendre polynomials for DIM and parity. Variances of random-regression coefficients associated with all orders of the polynomials were significant. Based on these parameter estimates, a covariance function (CF) was defined. The CF showed that the heritability decreases over parities, but within each parity heritability increases with DIM, whereas variance of permanent environmental effects increases over parities and decreases with DIM. Generally, genetic correlations were higher between records with similar DIM and parity. The results indicate that there are problems with the extension procedure used to predict 305-d milk yields. Using the covariance functions estimated in this study, breeding values could be predicted that take into account the covariance structure between records from different parities and different DIM. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze associations between ovine prion protein genotypes and production traits in East Friesian milk sheep. Production traits included the type traits scores for muscle mass, wool quality, and type; the reproduction traits age at first lambing, first lambing interval, second lambing interval, and total number of lambs born; the milk performance traits; milk, fat, and protein yields; fat and protein contents; and somatic cell scores. Prion protein genotypes were available for 658 East Friesian milk sheep. Linear animal models were used for the analysis of the prion protein genotype effects. The scores of the genotyped sheep for muscle mass, type, wool quality, and fat yield were significantly superior to those of the nongenotyped animals. An explanation for this might be that breeders seek to minimize genotyping costs by preselecting animals that do not meet the top breeding requirements. No significant associations were found between the prion protein genotypes and milk performance, type, or reproduction traits. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare 6 selection criteria in terms of 3-parity total milk yield and 9 selection criteria in terms of total net merit (H) comprising 3-parity total milk yield and total lactation persistency. The 6 selection criteria compared were as follows: first-parity milk estimated breeding value (EBV; M1), first 2-parity milk EBV (M2), first 3-parity milk EBV (M3), first-parity eigen index (EI1), first 2-parity eigen index (EI2), and first 3-parity eigen index (EI3). The 9 selection criteria compared in terms of H were M1, M2, M3, EI1, EI2, EI3, and first-parity, first 2-parity, and first 3-parity selection indices (I1, I2, and I3, respectively). In terms of total milk yield, selection on M3 or EI3 achieved the greatest genetic response, whereas selection on EI1 produced the largest genetic progress per day. In terms of total net merit, selection on I3 brought the largest response, whereas selection EI1 yielded the greatest genetic progress per day. A multiple-lactation random regression test-day model simultaneously yields the EBV of the 3 lactations for all animals included in the analysis even though the younger animals do not have the opportunity to complete the first 3 lactations. It is important to use the first 3 lactation EBV for selection decision rather than only the first lactation EBV in spite of the fact that the first-parity selection criteria achieved a faster genetic progress per day than the 3-parity selection criteria. Under a multiple-lactation random regression animal model analysis, the use of the first 3 lactation EBV for selection decision does not prolong the generation interval as compared with the use of only the first lactation EBV. Thus, it is justified to compare genetic response on a lifetime basis rather than on a per-day basis. The results suggest the use of M3 or EI3 for genetic improvement of total milk yield and the use of I3 for genetic improvement of total net merit H. Although this study deals with selection for 3-parity milk production, the same principle applies to selection for lifetime milk production. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the reliability and bias of estimated breeding values (EBV) from traditional BLUP with unknown parent groups (UPG), genomic EBV (GEBV) from single-step genomic BLUP (ssGBLUP) with UPG for the pedigree relationship matrix (A) only (SS_UPG), and GEBV from ssGBLUP with UPG for both A and the relationship matrix among genotyped animals (A22; SS_UPG2) using 6 large phenotype-pedigree truncated Holstein data sets. The complete data included 80 million records for milk, fat, and protein yields from 31 million cows recorded since 1980. Phenotype-pedigree truncation scenarios included truncation of phenotypes for cows recorded before 1990 and 2000 combined with truncation of pedigree information after 2 or 3 ancestral generations. A total of 861,525 genotyped bulls with progeny and cows with phenotypic records were used in the analyses. Reliability and bias (inflation/deflation) of GEBV were obtained for 2,710 bulls based on deregressed proofs, and on 381,779 cows born after 2014 based on predictivity (adjusted cow phenotypes). The BLUP reliabilities for young bulls varied from 0.29 to 0.30 across traits and were unaffected by data truncation and number of generations in the pedigree. Reliabilities ranged from 0.54 to 0.69 for SS_UPG and were slightly affected by phenotype-pedigree truncation. Reliabilities ranged from 0.69 to 0.73 for SS_UPG2 and were unaffected by phenotype-pedigree truncation. The regression coefficient of bull deregressed proofs on (G)EBV (i.e., GEBV and EBV) ranged from 0.86 to 0.90 for BLUP, from 0.77 to 0.94 for SS_UPG, and was 1.00 ± 0.03 for SS_UPG2. Cow predictivity ranged from 0.22 to 0.28 for BLUP, 0.48 to 0.51 for SS_UPG, and 0.51 to 0.54 for SS_UPG2. The highest cow predictivities for BLUP were obtained with the most extreme truncation, whereas for SS_UPG2, cow predictivities were also unaffected by phenotype-pedigree truncations. The regression coefficient of cow predictivities on (G)EBV was 1.02 ± 0.02 for SS_UPG2 with the most extreme truncation, which indicated the least biased predictions. Computations with the complete data set took 17 h with BLUP, 58 h with SS_UPG, and 23 h with SS_UPG2. The same computations with the most extreme phenotype-pedigree truncation took 7, 36, and 15 h, respectively. The SS_UPG2 converged in fewer rounds than BLUP, whereas SS_UPG took up to twice as many rounds. Thus, the ssGBLUP with UPG assigned to both A and A22 provided accurate and unbiased evaluations, regardless of phenotype-pedigree truncation scenario. Old phenotypes (before 2000 in this data set) did not affect the reliability of predictions for young selection candidates, especially in SS_UPG2. 相似文献

Genetic relationships among lactation records are of interest because most selection of bulls is on first lactations. Selection also complicates estimation of genetic parameters. Techniques unbiased by selection should be used. Estimation of genetic and environmental (co)variances was done using restricted maximum likelihood with an expectation-maximization algorithm for an animal model. The algorithm involved solving mixed model equations by direct inversion of coefficient matrix that became feasible by neglecting relationships across herds. From data consisting of first to third lactation milk records of New York Holsteins, two computationally manageable subsets were selected of 15 herds each totaling 3070 and 2900 cows. Each cow had a recorded first lactation and a recorded second lactation if she had a recorded third record. Herds were chosen according to frequency of related animals and about 200 cows per herd. After 18 rounds of iteration, changes in estimates between successive rounds were constantly decreasing and small. Estimates averaged from both subsets gave heritabilities of h1(2) = .33, h2(2) = .33, h3(2) = .34, genetic correlations of rg12 = .86, rg13 = .85, rg23 = .87, and phenotypic correlations of rp12 = .57, rp13 = .52, rp23 = .65. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to develop a selective enrichment broth to isolate accurately three Arcobacter spp. from concentrated chicken microflora by comparing the efficacy of various selective and growth-promoting additives in order. This newly developed enrichment broth was incorporated into an isolation protocol using a previously developed plating medium, and this new protocol was compared with two existing methods for the isolation of Arcobacter from poultry. Method 1 consisted of enrichment in Ellinghausen-McCullough-Johnson-Harris Polysorbate 80 broth followed by plating on cefoperazone-vancomycin-amphotericin B medium. Method 2 consisted of enrichment in Arcobacter selective broth and plating onto Arcobacter selective medium. Method 3 (the JM method), used a newly developed enrichment broth followed by plating on a previously described JM agar. The JM method isolated Arcobacter strains in 42 out of 50 broiler chicken samples, while methods 1 and 2 detected the organism in only 24 and 15 out of 50 samples, respectively. 相似文献

Three food poisoning restaurant outbreaks due to Staphylococcus aureus, occurring during June-October 2002 in the Principality of Asturias (PA), Spain, provided the basis for investigating some aspects of the molecular epidemiology of this organism. The methods applied to identify strains and lineages included multiplex-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect nine enterotoxin (se) genes, and three DNA fingerprinting procedures: pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) with SmaI, randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) with two selected primers, and plasmid restriction analysis with HindIII. Thirty-two isolates were differentiated into three non-se and 12 se strains, which were outbreak-specific, except for one that was represented in two of the outbreaks. In outbreak 1, the 16 food isolates analyzed had sec, seg and sei genes and generated a distinctive DNA fingerprint, being assigned to a single strain. This strain could be categorized as endemic in the PA and associated to manually handled dairy products and nasal carriers. In outbreak 2, the four food isolates analyzed fell into three strains, each one displaying a different se-gene profile (sea, sec and seg-seh-sei) and a distinctive DNA fingerprint. In outbreak 3, the five food isolates tested fell into four seg-sei strains generating identical RAPD but different PFGE and plasmid profiles, and one sea strain also collected from two nasal carriers. This last strain had also been found in manually handled vegetables in outbreak 2, and it belongs to a not very frequently found sea lineage in the PA. Multiplex-PCR to detect se genes together with the three applied DNA fingerprint typing procedures proved therefore to be useful tools in subclassifying S. aureus for epidemiological purposes. 相似文献
