Acknowledges the presentation of the American Psychological Association (APA) 1968 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award to Eleanor Jack Gibson. The citation reads: "For distinguished studies of perceptual learning and perceptual development. Following participation in and guidance of studies which have significantly advanced our understanding of depth perception in infants and young organisms, she has turned to the systematic analysis of reading. Her analysis and experimental study of the discriminatory and decoding aspects, as well as semantic and syntactical features of reading have indicated what must be learned. Her analysis of the learning process itself has delineated how reading is acquired. Always the experimentalist, she has elucidated the steps that must precede application in formal instruction. By so doing, she has imaginatively shown how to bridge the gap from laboratory to classroom." A biography and a listing of the awardee's scientific writings are also included. The recipients are selected by the APF Board of Trustees from nominations submitted by members of the American Psychological Foundation. The Distinguished Teaching in Psychology Award, which includes a check for $1,000, is given to the recipient for his or her contributions to the teaching of psychology. The following guidelines are used to determine the recipient: (a) demonstrated influence as a teacher of students who become outstanding psychologists, (b) development of effective teaching methods and/or teaching materials, (c) engagement in significant research on teaching, (d) development of innovative curricula and courses, (e) outstanding performance as a classroom teacher, (f) being an especially effective trainer of teachers of psychology, and (g) being responsible for administrative facilitation of outstanding teaching. The recipient is selected by the APF Teaching Award Committee from nominations submitted at large. When more than one outstanding candidate presents substantially comparable contributions to teaching, the committee is authorized to present two awards. National Psychology Awards for Excellence in the Media are given for outstanding performance in communicating psychology to the public. The media awards were presented at the APA convention. The winners were chosen from among several hundred entries. Eligible entries for this year's convention were published or broadcast between April 1, 1987, and April 1, 1988. The entries were judged by committees composed of psychologists, journalists, and broadcasters. Each winner received a citation and $1,000, as well as an all-expense-paid trip to the APA convention in Atlanta. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The American Psychological Foundation (APF) Gold Medal Awards recognize distinguished and enduring records of accomplishment in 4 areas of psychology. The 1997 recipient of the Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in Psychological Science is Raymond B. Cattell. Raymond B. Cattell has made prodigious, landmark contributions to psychology, including factor analytic mapping of the domains of personality, motivation, and abilities; exploration of three different medias of assessment; separation of fluid and crystallized intelligence; and numerous methodological innovations. Thus, Cattell became recognized in numerous substantive areas, providing a model of the complete psychologist in an age of specialization. It may be said that Cattell stands without peer in his creation of a unified theory of individual differences integrating intellectual, temperamental, and dynamic domains of personality in the context of environmental and hereditary influences (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
