In this study, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) functionalized by m‐xylylenediamine is used as thermal conductive fillers to improve their dispersibility in epoxy resin and the thermal conductivity of the MWNTs/bisphenol‐A glycidol ether epoxy resin composites. Functionalization with amine groups of MWNTs is achieved after such steps as carboxylation, acylation and amidation. The thermal conductivity, impact strength, flexural strength, and fracture surfaces of MWNTs/epoxy composites are investigated with different MWNTs. The results show that m‐xylylenediamine is successfully grafted onto the surface of the MWNTs and the mass fraction of the organic molecules grafted onto MWNTs is about 20 wt %. The thermal conductivity of MWNTs/epoxy composites is further enhanced to 1.236 W/mK with 2 wt % m‐MWNTs. When the content of m‐MWNTs is 1.5 wt %, the impact strength and flexural strength of the composites are 25.85 KJ/m2, 128.1 MPa, respectively. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results show that the fracture pattern of composites is changed from brittle fracture to ductile fracture. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The ball‐milling/liquid‐phase oxidation (BMLPO) method was used to fabricate surface‐modified short carbon fibers (SCFs). Multiscale epoxy composites reinforced with a combination of SCFs and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared. Atomic force microscopy observations and contact angle measurement were used to investigate the modification effect of the BMLPO method. Mechanical tests and scanning electron microscopy observations were used to study the effects of the SCFs, MWNTs, and their combination on tensile properties, impact strength, and fracture toughness of the epoxy composites. The results show that the surface roughness of the SCFs after BMLPO treatment increased, and the wettability of the SCFs was improved as well. The combined use of the SCFs and MWNTs had a synergetic effect on the tensile strength, fracture toughness, and impact strength of the epoxy composites. The addition of MWNTs promoted the plastic deformation of the epoxy matrix and decreased the stress‐concentration level near the SCF/matrix interface; these were considered the main causes of the synergetic effect. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study investigates the effect of the thiol‐ene click reaction on thermal conductivity and shear strength of the epoxy composites reinforced by various silane‐functionalized hybrids of sulfhydryl‐grafted multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (SH‐MWCNTs) and vinyl‐grafted MWCNTs (CC‐MWCNTs). The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that the sulfhydryl groups and vinyl groups are successfully grafted onto the surface of MWCNTs, after treatment of MWCNT with triethoxyvinylsilane and 3‐mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), HotDisk thermal constant analyzer (HotDisk), optical microscope, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are used to characterize the resultant composites. It is demonstrated that the hybrid of 75 wt % SH‐MWCNTs and 25 wt % CC‐MWCNTs has better dispersion and stability in epoxy matrix, and shows a stronger synergistic effect in improving the thermal conductivity of epoxy composite via the thiol‐ene click reaction with 2,2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionitrile) as thermal initiator. Furthermore, the tensile shear strength results of MWCNT/epoxy composites and the optical microscopy photographs of shear failure section indicate that the composite with the hybrid MWCNTs has higher shear strength than that with raw MWCNTs. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanosheets (GNSs) were used as fillers in epoxy composites with the aim of increasing the electrical and thermal conductivities of the composites. The filling of pristine CNTs produced the highest electrical conductivity (σ), whereas a high CNT functionalization and the two‐dimensional planar structure of GNSs were promising for improving the thermal conductivity. A combination of CNTs and GNSs exploited the advantages of both. When the CNT fraction was larger than 50 wt %, a higher σ was obtained. When a small amount of functionalized CNTs was added to the GNSs, the thermal conductivity was also increased. The rheological measurements revealed the lowest complex viscosity for the GNS filling and showed the exciting advantages of an easy processing. As a result, the mixed filling also exhibited a much lower viscosity than the pure CNT fillings. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

A novel electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method was employed for grafting multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on carbon fibers, which, after impregnation with bisphenol A dicyanate ester (BADCy), synergistically reinforced BADCy matrix composites (CNT‐C/BADCy). The effect of MWCNT presence on the mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. Composite tensile strength increased by 45.2% for an EPD duration of 2 min, while flexural strength exhibited a decreasing trend with EPD duration. Optical microscopy revealed that the existence of MWCNTs enhanced the fiber‐matrix interface while a large number of CNTs were observed to have pulled‐out from the matrix, a finding which explained the observed tensile strength increase in terms of energy dissipation by the specific toughening mechanism. The flexural strength decrease of the composites with CNTs as compared to specimens without nanotubes was found linked to the increased stress concentration in the BADCy matrix due to tube presence which weakens the adhesion between carbon fabrics. In a word, carbon nanotubes will enhance the micro interface and weaken the macro interface of the composites. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134, 45100.  相似文献

The performance of wind turbines suffers from icing in regions with extreme climate. One approach is to incorporate heating elements into the most susceptible areas of the wind turbine blade as protection against icing and for de‐icing. Cost‐efficient and reproducible fabrication, as well as easy integration is important due to the large area of wind turbine blades. In this work, multi‐walled carbon nanotubes are applied on a 50% poly(ethylene terephthalate) and 50% polyamide non‐woven textile substrate by rotary‐screen printing. The printed layers function as resistive heating elements in a fiber‐reinforced composite. The heating areas are provided with flexographic or screen inline‐printed silver‐electrodes and can be integrated by means of vacuum infusion into a glass fiber‐reinforced epoxy composite laminate. These laminates, which are connected to an intelligent electrical control system, are suitable for melting ice on the surface of components or for preventing the formation of ice. The first promising experiments on heating structures in a rotor blade of a wind turbine at laboratory scale (2 m length) are the basis of studies on intelligent electrical control of heating structures and their behavior at different temperatures. The heating elements were able to melt a 3–4 mm thick ice layer within 25 min in a climate chamber at ?5 °C. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 45950.  相似文献

This work investigated the effect of silane modification of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the mechanical properties of epoxy/HNTs nanocomposites. Three kinds of silane coupling agents, including 3‐(2‐aminoethyl)‐aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AEAPS), (3‐glycidyloxypropyl)‐trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), and octyltriethoxysilane (OTES), were employed. It was shown that the modified HNTs exhibited a better dispersion in the epoxy matrix compared with pristine one. Because of strong interfacial interaction between AEAPS modified HNTs and the epoxy matrix, the nanocomposites exhibited the highest glass transition temperature and modulus among all the samples. On the other hand, AEAPS and GPTMS modified HNTs/epoxy nanocomposites showed enhanced tensile strength and toughness. The toughing mechanisms were identified by the SEM micrographs of the fracture surfaces of the different kinds of samples. In this study, simultaneous enhancement of strength, toughness, and thermal stability of epoxy by the modified HNTs provides a novel approach to produce high‐performance thermosets. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The structure and properties of melt mixed high‐density polyethylene/multi‐walled carbon nanotube (HDPE/MWCNT) composites processed by compression molding and blown film extrusion were investigated to assess the influence of processing route on properties. The addition of MWCNTs leads to a more elastic response during deformations that result in a more uniform thickness distribution in the blown films. Blown film composites exhibit better mechanical properties due to the enhanced orientation and disentanglement of MWCNTs. At a blow up ratio (BUR) of 3 the breaking strength and elongation in the machine direction of the film with 4 wt % MWCNTs are 239% and 1054% higher than those of compression molded (CM) samples. Resistivity of the composite films increases significantly with increasing BURs due to the destruction of conductive pathways. These pathways can be recovered partially using an appropriate annealing process. At 8 wt % MWCNTs, there is a sufficient density of nanotubes to maintain a robust network even at high BURs. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 42665.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and its hybrids with iron oxide (Fe2O3) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles on mechanical characteristics and thermal properties of epoxy binder was evaluated. Furthermore, simultaneous effects of using MWCNT with TiO2 as pigment and CaCO3 as filler for epoxy composites were determined. To investigate effects of nano‐ and micro‐particles on epoxy matrix, the samples were evaluated by TGA and DTA. It was found that the hybrid of MWCNT with nano metal oxides caused considerable increment in the tensile and flexural properties of epoxy samples in comparison to the single MWCNT containing samples at the same filler contents. Significant improvement in the thermal conductivity of epoxy samples was obtained by using TiO2 pigment along with MWCNT. The TiO2 pigment also caused considerable improvement in mechanical properties of the epoxy matrix and the MWCNT containing nanocomposite. The best mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy nanocomposites were obtained at 1.5 wt % of MWCNT and 7 wt % of TiO2 that it should be attributed to particle network forming of the particles which cause better nano/micro dispersion and properties. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, we present thermoplastic nanocomposites of polycarbonate (PC) matrix with hybrid nanofillers system formed by a melt‐mixing approach. Various concentrations of multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) were mixed in to PC and the melt was homogenized. The nanocomposites were compression molded and characterized by different techniques. Torque dependence on the nanofiller composition increased with the presence of carbon nanotubes. The synergy of carbon nanotubes and GnP showed exponential increase of thermal conductivity, which was compared to logarithmic increase for nanocomposite with no MWCNT. Decrease of Shore A hardness at elevated loads present for all investigated nanocomposites was correlated with the expected low homogeneity caused by a low shear during melt‐mixing. Mathematical model was used to calculate elastic modulus from Shore A tests results. Vicat softening temperature (VST) showed opposite pattern for hybrid nanocomposites and for PC‐MWCNT increasing in the latter case. Electrical conductivity boost was explained by the collective effect of high nanofiller loads and synergy of MWCNT and GnP. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The present article reports the development and characterization of carbon nanofiber (CNF)‐incorporated carbon/phenolic multiscale composites. Vapor‐grown CNFs were dispersed homogeneously in to phenolic resin using an effective dispersion route, and carbon fabrics were subsequently impregnated with the CNF‐dispersed resin to develop carbon fiber/CNF/phenolic resin multiscale composites. Mechanical and thermal transmission properties of multiscale composites were characterized. Elastic modulus and thermal conductivity of neat carbon/phenolic and multiscale composites were predicted and compared with the experimental results. It was observed that incorporation of only 1.5 wt % CNF resulted in 10% improvement in Young's modulus, 12% increase in tensile strength, and 36% increase in thermal conductivity of carbon/phenolic composites. Fracture surface of composite samples revealed the formation of stronger fiber/matrix interface in case of multiscale composites than neat carbon/phenolic composites. Enhancement of above properties through CNF addition has been explained, and the difference between the predicted values and experimental results has been discussed. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. A microwave‐assisted functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with isocyanate groups allowed a reduction of functionalization time from 24 h to 30 min with no change in the degree of functionalization or in the nanotube characteristics. Polymer nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical properties were obtained because of the tailored interface by the covalent linkage between the surface‐modified multiwalled‐carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and an elastomeric polyurethane (PUE) matrix. The mechanical data revealed that the composite containing 0.25 wt % of MWCNT‐NCO showed an increase of 31% in tear strength and 28% in static toughness. A good adhesion between the matrix and individually dispersed nanotubes was observed in the scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images. Nanoindentation and nanoscratch experiments were conducted to investigate the properties on the sub‐surface. An increase by a factor of 3 in the scratch hardness was observed for the composite with 0.50 wt % of MWCNT‐NCO with respect to the neat PUE. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Ethylenediamine (EDA) covalently functionalized graphene sheets (GS‐EDA) and acidized carbon nanotubes (MWNTs‐COOH) were first prepared, followed by synthesizing l ‐aspartic acid functionalized GS‐EDA/MWNTs‐COOH (LGC) hybrid nanomaterials by using l ‐aspartic acid as a bridging agent. Then nanocomposites of high density polyethylene‐g ‐maleic anhydride (HDPE‐g ‐MAH) synergistic strengthening–toughening using LGC hybrids were prepared via melt compounding method. The surface structure of filler was characterized by using infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectrum. The synergistic strengthening–toughening effects of LGC hybrids on the HDPE‐g ‐MAH were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile, and impact tests. FTIR showed that EDA has been grafted on the graphene sheets, and ? COOH group has been introduced into MWNTs. The l ‐aspartic acid connected GS‐EDA and MWNTs‐COOH through chemical bonds. SEM observations showed that LGC hybrids were homogeneously dispersed in HDPE‐g ‐MAH nanocomposites. Tensile and impact tests indicated that the mechanical properties of nanocomposites were improved obviously when LGC hybrid nanomaterials were incorporated simultaneously. DMA analysis indicated that the storage modulus of composites was higher than that of pure HDPE‐g ‐MAH matrix. TGA results revealed that the maximum decomposition temperature of HDPE‐g ‐MAH composites containing 0.75 wt % of LGC showed 11.5 °C higher than that of HDPE‐g ‐MAH matrix. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of glass fiber (GF) on the electrical resistivities of polyoxymethylene (POM)/maleic anhydride‐grafted polyethylene (MAPE)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites is investigated. The POM/MAPE/MWCNT composites at a MWCNT loading of 0.75% are nonconductive because most of MWCNTs are isolated in the MAPE islands, and their electrical resistivities decrease significantly after the addition of GF because of the formation of MAPE‐coated GF structure, which facilitates the formation of conductive paths and was confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The formation of MAPE‐coated GF structure is attributed to the interaction between GF and MAPE during melt compounding, as contrasted by the uncoated GF using high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) instead of MAPE. Nonconductive POM/5–20% MAPE/0.75% MWCNT composites become conductive upon the addition of 20% GF. This preparation method for conductive materials can be generalized to POM/5–20% maleic anhydride‐grafted polypropylene (MAPP)/0.75% MWCNT composites. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The synergetic effect of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and carbon fibers (CFs) in enhancing the electrical conductivity of nylon 6 (PA6) composites was investigated. To improve the compatibility between the fillers and the PA6 resin, we grafted γ‐aminopropyltriethoxy silane (KH‐550) onto the MWNTs and CFs after carboxyl groups were generated on their surface by chemical oxidation with nitric acid. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis proved that the KH‐550 molecules were successfully grafted onto the surface of the MWNTs and CFs. Scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy showed that the obtained modified fillers reduced the aggregation of fillers and resulted in better dispersion and interfacial compatibility. We found that the electrical percolation threshold of the MWNT/PA6 and CF/PA6 composites occurred when the volume fraction of the fillers were 4 and 5%, respectively. The MWNT/CF hybrid‐filler system exhibited a remarkable synergetic effect on the electrically conductive networks. The MWNT/7% CF hybrid‐filler system appeared to show a second percolation when the MWNT volume fraction was above 4% and a volume resistivity reduction of two orders of magnitude compared with the MWNT/PA6 system. The mechanical properties of different types of PA6 composites with variation in the filler volume content were also studied. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. A facile and large‐scale production method of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers and carboxyl functionalized carbon nanotube reinforced PAN composite fibers was demonstrated by the use of Forcespinning® technology. The developed polymeric fibers and carbon nanotube‐reinforced composite fibers were subsequently carbonized to obtain carbon fiber systems. Analysis of the fiber diameter, homogeneity, alignment of carbon nanotube and bead formation was conducted with scanning electron microscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis, electrical, and mechanical characterization were also conducted. Raman and FTIR analyses of the developed fiber systems indicate interactions between carbon nanotubes and the carbonized PAN fibers through π–π stacking. This research work investigates the tensile strength and elastic modulus of the alumina nanoparticles, glass fiber, and carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites. The first type composites were made by adding 1–5 wt % (in the interval of 1%) of alumina to the epoxy matrix, whereas the second and third categories of composites were made by adding 1–5 wt % short glass, carbon fibers to the matrix. A fourth type of composite has also been synthesized by incorporating both alumina particles (2 wt %) and fibers to the epoxy. Results showed that the longitudinal modulus has significantly improved because of the filler additions. Both tensile strength and modulus are further better for hybrid composites consisting both alumina particles and glass fibers or carbon fibers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CE) composite is ideal for a cryogenic fuel storage tank in space applications due to its unmatched specific strength and modulus. In this article, inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) of carbon fiber/epoxy (CE) composite is shown to be considerably improved by engineering the interface with carboxyl functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (FCNT) using electrophoretic deposition technique. FCNT deposited fibers from different bath concentrations (0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 g/L) were used to fabricate the laminates, which were then tested at room (30°C) and in-situ liquid nitrogen (LN) (−196°C) temperature as well as conditioning for different time durations (0.25, 0.5, 1, 6, and 12 h) followed by immediate RT testing to study the applicability of these engineered materials at the cryogenic environment. A maximum increment in ILSS was noticed at bath concentration of 0.5 g/L, which was ~21% and ~ 17% higher than neat composite at 30°C and − 196°C, respectively. Short-term LN conditioning was found to be detrimental due to developed cryogenic shock, which was further found to be compensated by cryogenic interfacial clamping upon long-term exposure.  相似文献

Composite membranes of functionalized (–COOH, –CONH2, –N3) carbon nanotubes/polysulfone (CNT/PS) synthesized by the phase‐inversion method show unique properties with respect to surface characteristics and the selective separation of metal ions from aqueous solution. Apart from the reduction in the pore size depending on the type of functionalities on the nanotubes, the pure water permeation could reach up to as high as ~600 L m?2 h?1 (LMH) at reduced pressures and could be due to the functionalized tips of the nanotubes on the membrane surface resulting from the phase inversion process used for the membrane fabrication. The membranes were characterized by small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to confirm the uniform distribution of the nanopores and the surface morphology of the membranes. Results show that rejection of Cu(II) was better than Pb(II) depending on the surface functionality. Interestingly, these membranes also showed enhanced conductivities in the range of 1.0 × 10?2 S cm?1, the conductivity depending on the type of functionality on the nanotubes, thus confirming the presence of functionalized nanotubes tips on the membrane surface. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, nanocomposites of polypropylene (PP) with various loadings of multi‐wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) were formed by masterbatch dilution/mixing approach from individual masterbatches PP‐MWCNT and PP‐GnP. Melt mixing on a twin‐screw extruder at two different processing temperatures was followed by characterization of morphology by transmitted‐light microscopy including the statistical analysis of agglomeration behavior. The influence of processing temperature and weight fractions of both nanofillers on the dispersion quality is reported. Thermal properties of the nanocomposites investigated by DSC and TGA show sensitivity to the nanofillers weight fraction ratio and to processing conditions. Electrical conductivity is observed to increase up to an order of magnitude with the concentration of each nanofiller increasing from 0.5 wt % to 1.0 wt %. This is related with a decrease of electrical conductivity observed for unequal concentration of both nanofillers. This particular behavior shows the increase of electrical properties for higher MWCNT loadings and the increase of thermo‐mechanical properties for higher GnP loadings. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
