Global students

Universities-internationally-are confronting a revolution. While these institutions of higher education have evolved over the past centuries, the pace of change has not been as rapid as it is at the moment. This a because, at one level, the culture is changing, universities are moving from institutions which have been based on print, and the written word, to institutions that are part of the new digital age. One of the most important shifts taking place in this new context is that students are systematically being redefined as clients. This is partly a result of the overall emerging pattern of 'user pays' which is characteristic of the new information-as-commodity era. But this classification of students as consumers, or clients, is going to result in a startlingly different educational practice and philosophy around the world. To start with, universities are going to have to put more value on teaching and this represents a considerable shift in position. Students increasingly have new power that they can exercise. They are no longer confined to local or national institutions. They can vote with their virtual feet; they can enrol in any online university around the world. Possibly at even less cost. As distinct from the past, students in the future are going to be faced with an embarrassment of courses, as universities across the world compete for their business and try to make the quality of their teaching a selling point     

Global Rietveld Refinement

Global optimisation methods of structure determination from powder diffraction data have risen to prominence in a relatively short space of time and they now constitute a key approach in the examination of polycrystalline molecular organic materials. A correctly formulated global optimisation approach may be regarded as a “global Rietveld refinement” that is capable of delivering accurate crystal structures from high-quality powder diffraction data. This paper focuses on how accuracy at all stages of a powder diffraction experiment impacts upon the overall structure solution process and particular attention is paid to assessing the degree of accuracy with which structures are returned from the global optimisation process.

Global nanotechnology research metrics

Text mining was used to extract technical intelligence from the open source global nanotechnology and nanoscience research literature. An extensive nanotechnology/nanoscience-focused query was applied to the Science Citation Index/Social Science Citation Index (SCI/SSCI) databases. The nanotechnology/nanoscience research literature infrastructure (prolific authors, key journals/institutions/countries, most cited authors/journals/documents) was obtained using bibliometrics. A novel addition was the use of institution and country auto-correlation maps to show co-publishing networks among institutions and among countries, and the use of institution-phrase and country-phrase cross-correlation maps to show institution networks and country networks based on use of common terminology (proxy for common interests). The use of factor matrices quantified further the strength of the linkages among institutions and among countries, and validated the co-publishing networks shown graphically on the maps.
