Extends the discussion of the production of psychological knowledge that was initiated in articles by K. J. Gergen (see record 1986-00014-001), S. Scarr (see record 1986-10725-001), and T. E. Schact (see record 1986-11891-001) by reflecting on factors that render the discussion of psychological knowledge difficult and by calling attention to an omission in the constructionist position outlined by Scarr and by Gergen. Comments on M. J. Mahoney's (see record 1990-03226-001) discussion of scientific psychology and radical behaviorism (RB). Although the discussion raises valid points, there are important problems that require clarification to preclude the discussion from being taken as the last word on RB and scientific psychology. In this response to Stern's (2005) (see reocord 2005-16136-010) discussion of Klugkist, Laudy, and Hoijtink (2005), model inference based on posterior probabilities on the parameter space is discussed. Furthermore, the authors respond to Stern's example in which all possible orderings are included via a short discussion of exploratory versus theory-based modeling. Finally, the authors show that the Bayesian approach is flexible and can deal with many types of constraints. This is illustrated using a model with constraints on the differences between means. Replies to comments by T. P. O'Brien and D. J. Jones (see record 1999-11125-011) and C. B. Clements (see record 1999-11125-012) regarding the Haney and P. Zimbardo (see record 1998-04417-001) discussion of changing trends in US prison policy. The author applauds O'Brien and Jones's willingness to join in the political discussion regarding prison policies, but he disagrees with their historical account of decreases in crime rates resulting from increased punitiveness. Haney also expresses concerns about the authors' insistence that research should be conducted and presented in ways that are accepted by all sides of the political community. Haney also agrees with Clements that elective officials exploit crime issues for political purposes. Haney believes that psychological informed perspectives, based on data and professional experiences and not anecdotes of ideology, are needed to break an irrational cycle, regardless of whether "all sides" of the political community agree with their implications. Criticizes D. C. McClelland's (see record 1973-22126-001) discussion of intelligence testing as an unqualified negation of the field of intelligence testing. Contradictions in McClelland's discussion, including issues concerning criterion sampling in testing and the standardization factor in test construction, are discussed. Comments on the implications of the discussion of P. T. Manicas and P. F. Secord (see record 1984-00037-001) on psychology and the new philosophy of science. It is suggested that they indicated that (1) the realist approach is coextensive with the new philosophy of science, (2) the version of realism (the transcendental realist approach) put forward by R. Bhaskar (1983) is equivalent to all other forms of realism, and (3) the contentions of the new philosophy of science are not problematic. The present author offers critiques in these areas, although he states that the discussion of Manicas and Secord is worthy of serious attention. Discusses the intent of a quote by the present author (1981) concerning the rhetorical use of the medical model. This quote, cited by D. Smith and W. A. Kraft (see record 1984-06861-001) in their discussion of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III), was taken out of context. While the medical model can be and is used to further sociopolitical and economic agendas, such a use is not useful, as its use in warfare between psychologists and psychiatrists discredits both professions and inhibits scientific discussion and research in areas of mutual concern. Replies to comments on multicultural perspectives and researcher bias made by F. A. Ibrahim (see record 1989-25694-001) and M. Gergen (see record 1989-25689-001) regarding the present author's (see record 1988-15683-001) discussion of ethical issues in research on "underrepresented groups" such as women and minorities. Reviews the book, Discussion and Group Methods: Theory and Practice by Ernest G. Bormann (see record 1970-06652-000). The author, a Professor at the University of Minnesota, in an attempt to deal with the theoretical and practical aspects of group discussion, has adequately explored the task dimension and the social dimension of small-group communication (discussion). This book is divided into two distinct sections. Part 1, The Techniques of Group Discussion, deals with the know-how of evolving, participating in, and moderating various types of discussions. Part II, Group Methods, is concerned with the small-group theory that is necessary if one is to apply group methods to discussion. The author' obviously wrote this book as a text to be used in university courses dealing primarily with small task-oriented groups. Despite the apparent lack of newness, the book is not just another accumulation of the findings of others. Many of the familiar key concepts dealing with group discussion are given new meaning as they are explained and verified in light of the observations of the author as he conducted the Small Groups Communication Seminar over the last eight years at the University of Minnesota. Responds to the critique by J. E. Pipal (see record 1996-12808-001) of managed care. Pipal is criticized for hyperbole and negativity in her discussion, and it is suggested that professional and public-health objectives will be better served by an open and mutually respectful discussion that raises issues and seeks solutions to complex problems. It is argued that true managed care, featuring arrangements to regulate the costs, site, and utilization of mental health services in an ethically, fiscally, and clinically sound manner, would be a worthwhile goal. Comments on S. Barton's (see record 1994-27839-001) discussion of the implications of nonlinearities in differential equations that govern living systems and their bearing on psychology and biology. Halasz extends Barton's discussion of (1) quantitative local vs qualitative global treatment of behavioral systems; (2) nonnstationariness vs nonlinearity; and (3) deterministic vs stochastic fluctuation. Replies to G. P. Bauer and P. Sherry's (see record 1986-25091-001) comments on the present authors' (see record 1984-12361-001) discussion of clinical and theoretical issues in the treatment of borderline patients. It is argued that Bauer and Sherry's reply was inaccurate, overly inferential, and misleading. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
