We apply activity theory (AT) to design adaptive e-learning systems (AeLS). AT is a framework to study human’s behavior at learning; whereas, AeLS enhance students’ apprenticeship by the personalization of teaching–learning experiences. AeLS depict users’ traits and predicts learning outcomes. The approach was successfully tested: Experimental group took lectures chosen by the anticipation AT principle; whilst, control group received randomly selected lectures. Learning achieved by experimental group reveals a correlation quite significant and high positive; but, for control group the correlation it is not significant and medium positive. We conclude: AT is a useful framework to design AeLS and provide student-centered education.  相似文献

AimsThe primary aim of the present study was to understand the impact of online gambling on gambling problems in a large-scale nationally representative sample of Italian youth, and to identify and then further examine a subgroup of online gamblers who reported higher rates of gambling problems.DesignData from the ESPAD®Italia2013 (European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs) Study were used for analyses of adolescent Internet gambling.SettingSelf-administered questionnaires were completed by a representative sample of high school students, aged 15–19 years.ParticipantsA total of 14,778 adolescent students.MeasurementsRespondents’ problem gambling severity; gambling behavior (participation in eight different gambling activities, the number of gambling occasions and the number of online gambling occasions, monthly gambling expenditure); Socio-demographics (e.g., family structure and financial status); and control variables were measured individually (i.e., use of the Internet for leisure activities and playing video games).FindingsRates of problem gambling were five times higher among online gamblers than non-online gamblers. In addition, factors that increased the risk of becoming a problem online gambler included living with non-birth parents, having a higher perception of financial family status, being more involved with gambling, and the medium preferences of remote gamblers (e.g., Internet cafes, digital television, and video game console).ConclusionsThe online gambling environment may pose significantly greater risk to vulnerable players. Family characteristics and contextual elements concerning youth Internet gambling (e.g., remote mediums) may play a key role in explaining problem online gambling among adolescents.  相似文献

Safety shoe designs are primarily based on safety requirements. But all-day comfort should not be luxury: Heel strike associated impact loads on joints need to be compensated by active muscular effort and safety shoes should support this protective function of muscle activation. In 10 healthy men, 12 trunk and leg muscles were analyzed with surface electromyography. Subjects walked on a walkway while wearing different safety shoes with the test shoes being equipped with exchangeable cushioning heel inserts according to individuals' body weight. While wearing the optimally cushioned shoes the cumulative muscle activity per distance travelled dropped clearly compared to the regular safety shoes, demonstrating reduced muscular effort. Also, the heel strike associated amplitude peak of back muscles occurred earlier within the stride while wearing the test shoes. Thus weight-balanced cushioning heel inserts in safety shoes proved able to reduce muscle strain, logically delaying muscular fatigue and extending muscular joint protection.Relevance to industryAdjustable heel inserts in safety shoes are suited to improve the health status of employees by reducing muscular effort so that active joint protection can be prolonged.  相似文献

Enhancing evacuee safety is a key factor in reducing the number of injuries and deaths that result from earthquakes. One way this can be achieved is by training occupants. Virtual Reality (VR) and Serious Games (SGs), represent novel techniques that may overcome the limitations of traditional training approaches. VR and SGs have been examined in the fire emergency context; however, their application to earthquake preparedness has not yet been extensively examined.We provide a theoretical discussion of the advantages and limitations of using VR SGs to investigate how building occupants behave during earthquake evacuations and to train building occupants to cope with such emergencies. We explore key design components for developing a VR SG framework: (a) what features constitute an earthquake event; (b) which building types can be selected and represented within the VR environment; (c) how damage to the building can be determined and represented; (d) how non-player characters (NPC) can be designed; and (e) what level of interaction there can be between NPC and the human participants. We illustrate the above by presenting the Auckland City Hospital, New Zealand as a case study, and propose a possible VR SG training tool to enhance earthquake preparedness in public buildings.  相似文献

AimCake decorating involves several hand intensive steps with high grip force during the application of icing. The purpose of this laboratory study was to evaluate forearm muscle activity, discomfort, productivity, and usability of an alternative tool for cake decorating compared to decorating with the traditional piping bag.MethodsParticipants (n = 17) performed 2 h of cake decorating tasks using the two tools. Subjective hand and arm fatigue, usability, upper extremity posture, and muscle activity from three forearm muscles were assessed for each tool. Outcome measures were evaluated using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and the paired t-test.ResultsLess fatigue was reported in the dominant hand (p = 0.001), forearm (p = 0.003) and shoulder (p = 0.02) for the alternative tool when compared to the piping bag. Average median (APDF 50%) and peak (APDF 90%) muscle activity was significantly less for the alternative tool across all three forearm muscles. The alternative tool significantly reduced grip force, an important risk factor for distal upper extremity pain and disorders. Participants rated usability of the alternative tool superior for refill and comfort but the traditional method was rated better for accuracy, stability, positioning and control.ConclusionsThe alternative tool was associated with less dominant arm fatigue, muscle activity, and grip force when compared with the piping bag. However, the alternative tool did not receive the best overall usability rating due to problems with accuracy and overflow, especially with smaller decorating tips. Recommendations were made for addressing these problems with the alternative tool.  相似文献

Robotic devices are becoming a popular alternative to the traditional physical therapy as a mean to enhance functional recovery after stroke; they offer more intensive practice opportunities without increasing time spent on supervision by the treating therapist. An ideal behavior for these systems would consist in emulating real therapists by providing anticipated force feedback to the patients in order to encourage and modulate neural plasticity. However, nowadays there are no systems able to work in an anticipatory fashion. For this reason, the authors propose an anticipatory assistance-as-needed control algorithm for a multijoint robotic orthosis to be used in physical ABI neurorehabilitation. This control algorithm, based on a dysfunctional-adapted biomechanical prediction subsystem, is able to avoid patient trajectory deviations by providing them with anticipatory force-feedback. The system has been validated by means of a robotic simulator.Obtained results demonstrate through simulations that the proposed assistance-as-needed control algorithm is able to provide anticipatory actuation to the patients, avoiding trajectory deviations and tending to minimize the degree of actuation. Thus, the main novelty and contribution of this work is the anticipatory nature of the proposed assistance-as-needed control algorithm, that breaks with the current robotic control strategies by not waiting for the trajectory deviations to take place. This new actuation paradigm avoids patient slacking and increases both participation and muscle activity in such a way that neural plasticity is encouraged and modulated to reinforce motor recovery.  相似文献

The purpose was to propose an alternative data analysis for functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)-derived hemodynamics as a function of cortical activation changes. We evaluated hemodynamic responses from the prefrontal cortex region while 38 participants performed a cognitive task. The task consisted of an arithmetic calculation with three levels of complexity (i.e., easy, medium and difficult). These task-dependent hemodynamic responses were analyzed by the slope method (i.e. using a linear regression through the cognitive task) and were compared with the corresponding responses obtained with a traditional approach of the amplitude method. Subjective scales of task loading (assessed by DP15 and NASA-TLX) and behavioral outcomes (performance and reaction time) were also recorded in response to the task complexity. Results revealed that the proposed slope method allowed a better discrimination in terms of cortical activation among all levels of mental workload. There was no significant increase in cortical activation between the medium and difficult levels (p = .30; d = 0.09) with the amplitude method while the slope coefficient was sensitive to the different levels (p < .01; d = 0.32). These preliminary results from a large sample size demonstrated that the slope method appears suitable for discriminating the changes in cortical activation with respect to the mental workload.Relevance to industryIn this work, we proposed an optimum way of quantifying the mental workload of participants in terms of fNIRS-derived cerebral hemodynamic responses.  相似文献

The paper presents an event driven model predictive control (MPC) framework for managing charging operations of electric vehicles (EV) in a smart grid. The objective is to minimize the cost of energy consumption, while respecting EV drivers' preferences, technical bounds on the control action (in compliance with the IEC 61851 standard) and both market and grid constraints (by seeking the tracking of a reference load profile defined by the grid operator). The proposed control approach allows “flexible” EV users to participate in demand side management (DSM) programs, which will play a crucial role in improving stability and efficiency of future smart grids. Further, the natural MPC formulation of the problem can be recast into a mixed integer linear programming problem, suitable for implementation on a calculator. Experiential training simulators are gaining increasing popularity for job-related training due to their potential to engage and motivate adult learners. They are designed to provide learning experiences that are directly connected to users' work environments and support self-regulated learning. Nevertheless, learners often fail to transfer the knowledge gained in the simulated environment to real-world contexts. The EU-funded ImREAL project aimed to bridge that gap by developing a suite of intelligent services designed to enhance existing training simulators. This paper presents work that was a subset of this research project, reporting the iterative development and evaluation of a scaffolding service, which was integrated into a simulator for training medical students to perform diagnostic interviews. The study comprises three evaluation phases, comparing the pure simulator to a first version with metacognitive scaffolding and then to a final version with affective metacognitive scaffolding and enriched user modelling. The scaffolding service provides the learner with metacognitive prompts; affective elements are realized by an integrated affect reporting tool and affective prompts. Using a mixed-method approach by analysing questionnaires (N = 106) and log-data (N = 426), the effects of the services were investigated with respect to real-world relevance, self-regulated learning support, learning experience, and integration. Despite some limitations, the outcomes of this study demonstrate the usefulness of affective metacognitive scaffolding in the context of experiential training simulators; significant post-simulation increases in perceived relevance of the simulator, reflective note-taking, overall motivation, and feeling of success could be identified. Perceived usability and flow of the simulation increased, whereas overall workload and frustration decreased. However, low response rates to specific functions of the simulation point to a need to further investigate how to raise users' awareness and understanding of the provided tools, to encourage interaction with the services, and to better convey the benefits of using them. Thus, future challenges concern not so much technological developments for personalizing learning experiences, but rather new ways to change user attitudes towards an open approach to learning systems that enables them to benefit from all offered features.  相似文献

Military helicopter pilots are expected to wear a variety of items of body-borne equipment during flight so as to be prepared for any situation that may arise in combat. Helicopter seats are designed to a specified weight range for an occupant with equipment. This paper investigates how distributing the equipment on the body affects injury potential during a helicopter crash. A finite element model representing a helicopter seat with a fully deformable 50th percentile Hybrid III carrying equipment was developed. The model was subjected to a standard military certification crash test. Various equipment configurations were investigated and analysed to determine its influence on the risk of injury. It was found that placing the equipment low on the torso, i.e. near the thighs, not only reduces the likelihood of injury in the lumbar, spinal region but also provides favourable results in neck and head injury risk when compared to other configurations investigated. In contrast, placing equipment high on the torso, i.e. close to the chin, increases the lumbar load and implicitly, the risk of head injury. A statistical analysis is carried out using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test to deliver probability of loads experienced within a certain interval. This study recommends an equipment configuration that improves survivability for an occupant seated on a fixed load energy absorbing seat which is subjected to Military Standard 58095A Test 4.  相似文献

The European eel Regulation EC 1100/2007 establishes measures to recover the European eel stock. The Regulation requires Member States to guarantee a spawner escapement ≥40% of pristine levels by reducing eel mortality. The complexity and plasticity of eel life history make it difficult to assess the effectiveness of alternative management options, and tools allowing decision makers and fishermen to quickly assess the effectiveness of proposed management scenarios are urgently needed. We used state-of-the-art knowledge to develop a user-friendly simulation software allowing users to evaluate if current management policies meet the conservation target and evaluate the expected performances (spawner escapement and fishing yield) of alternative management scenarios. The software relies upon a demographic model explicitly accounting for the most relevant features of eel demography and has default settings for specific geographical areas and water systems. We demonstrate the software by exploring a variety of management plans in three European water systems.  相似文献

Land exchange through rental transactions is a central process in agricultural systems. The land tenure regimes emerge from land transactions and structural and land use changes are tied to the dynamics of the land market. We introduce LARMA, a LAnd Rental MArket model embedded within the Pampas Model (PM), an agent-based model of Argentinean agricultural systems. LARMA produces endogenous formation of land rental prices. LARMA relies on traditional economic concepts for LRP formation but addresses some drawbacks of this approach by being integrated into an agent-based model that considers heterogeneous agents interacting with one another. PM-LARMA successfully reproduced the agricultural land tenure regimes and land rental prices observed in the Pampas. Including adaptive, heterogeneous and interacting agents was critical to this success. We conclude that agent-based and traditional economic models can be successfully combined to capture complex emergent land tenure and market price patterns while simplifying the overall model design.  相似文献

Water recycling is an important solution to increasing water scarcity. However, universal wastewater treatment standards deter uptake of recycling schemes. Lack of data also impedes fit-for-purpose water recycling and water managers are challenged by decision making under uncertain conditions. Bayesian networks (BNs) are increasingly recognised as a valuable tool for decision making under uncertainty. In this study BNs are used to model health risks associated with wastewater irrigation of a public open space. Three BNs based on quantitative microbial risk assessment model risk reduction potential along a treatment chain and at the site of reuse. The BNs simulate multiple exposure profiles and scenarios, providing conditional probability of infection or illness, comparable with health-based targets. Study findings highlight the significant impact of post treatment risk mitigation, despite challenging conditions. BNs provide a transparent, defensible evidence base for mapping and quantifying risk pathways, comparing decision options and predicting outcomes of management policies.  相似文献

Falls pose an important problem for older adults. Balance training is one of the main prevention strategies, but there is a lack of objective measurement methods that would allow the effectiveness of the treatments employed to be assessed. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between posturographic parameters and risk factors associated with falling, including the fear of falling (FoF). Forty-one healthy community-dwelling older adults were surveyed on their perception of problems considered to be fall risk factors. Balance measurement with posturography was performed. The relationships between risk factors and falls and risk factors and posturography were analysed by means of cross-tabulation and logistic regression, respectively. Experimental results showed a significant relationship between some of the posturographic parameters and various fall risk factors. Stability limits were related to FoF, and results from the Romberg test with eyes closed with and without foam correlated with problems in kneeling/crouching. The results from the Romberg test with eyes closed and foam correlated with osteoarthritis. Equations were developed to estimate the probability of having such problems. In conclusion, posturography is useful for the estimation of fall risk conditions in relation to three important fall risk factors (FoF, osteoarthritis and problems in kneeling/crouching), and it could be used for targeting, training and studying progress after the use of different treatments.Relevance to industryPosturography can be used as an assessment tool to analyse the effects of those treatments aimed at preventing falls. Furthermore, the equations derived from our results can be used along with posturographic variables to assess patient progress.  相似文献

This paper describes the design and application of the Atmospheric Evaluation and Research Integrated model for Spain (AERIS). Currently, AERIS can provide concentration profiles of NO2, O3, SO2, NH3, PM, as a response to emission variations of relevant sectors in Spain. Results are calculated using transfer matrices based on an air quality modelling system (AQMS) composed by the WRF (meteorology), SMOKE (emissions) and CMAQ (atmospheric-chemical processes) models. The AERIS outputs were statistically tested against the conventional AQMS and observations, revealing a good agreement in both cases. At the moment, integrated assessment in AERIS focuses only on the link between emissions and concentrations. The quantification of deposition, impacts (health, ecosystems) and costs will be introduced in the future. In conclusion, the main asset of AERIS is its accuracy in predicting air quality outcomes for different scenarios through a simple yet robust modelling framework, avoiding complex programming and long computing times.  相似文献

Simulation of the watershed-scale fate and transport of radionuclides is required in order to predict the consequences of contamination redistribution. Integrated watershed modeling is a suitable technique for this task, but it requires fully coupled investigation of radionuclide behavior in surface water, suspended sediment and subsurface aquifers. We developed a novel simulator for computing the spatiotemporal redistribution of fallout radionuclides in watersheds. The simulator was applied to an actual reservoir basin contaminated by fallout radionuclides from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2011. As a result, the simulated 137Cs concentration in bottom sediment showed a reasonably close match with the measurement data. The distribution coefficient of 137Cs consistent with the latest measurement data was identified as being at least 400,000 L/kg, and it was estimated that more than 90% of the total 137Cs distributed in the fallout remains in the catchment area.  相似文献

Causal explanation and empirical prediction are usually addressed separately when modelling ecological systems. This potentially leads to erroneous conflation of model explanatory and predictive power, to predictive models that lack ecological interpretability, or to limited feedback between predictive modelling and theory development. These are fundamental challenges to appropriate statistical and scientific use of ecological models. To help address such challenges, we propose a novel, integrated modelling framework which couples explanatory modelling for causal understanding and input variable selection with a machine learning approach for empirical prediction. Exemplar datasets from the field of freshwater ecology are used to develop and evaluate the framework, based on 267 stream and river monitoring stations across England, UK. These data describe spatial patterns in benthic macroinvertebrate community indices that are hypothesised to be driven by meso-scale physical and chemical habitat conditions. Whilst explanatory models developed using structural equation modelling performed strongly (r2 for two macroinvertebrate indices = 0.64–0.70), predictive models based on extremely randomised trees demonstrated moderate performance (r2 for the same indices = 0.50–0.61). However, through coupling explanatory and predictive components, our proposed framework yields ecologically-interpretable predictive models which also maintain the parsimony and accuracy of models based on solely predictive approaches. This significantly enhances the opportunity for feedback among causal theory, empirical data and prediction within environmental modelling.  相似文献
