A well-known problem in default logic is the ability of naive reasoners to explain bothg and ¬g from a set of observations. This problem is treated in at least two different ways within that camp.One approach is examination of the various explanations and choosing among them on the basis of various explanation comparators. A typical comparator is choosing the explanation that depends on the most specific observation, similar to the notion of narrowest reference class.Others examine default extensions of the observations and choose whatever is true in any extension, or what is true in all extensions or what is true in preferred extensions. Default extensions are sometimes thought of as acceptable models of the world that are discarded as more knowledge becomes available.We argue that the notions of specificity and extension lack clear semantics. Furthermore, we show that the problems these ideas were supposed to solve can be handled easily within a probabilistic framework.  相似文献

If is a substitution closed full principal semiAFL generated by a language without an infinite regular set and 1 is a full semiAFL, then is contained in CALm(1) if and only if it is contained in 1. Among the applications of these results are the following. For the following families , CAL n () forms a proper hierarchy: =INDEXED, =ETOL, and any semiAFL contained in CF. A New Class of Depth-Size Optimal Parallel Prefix Circuits   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Given n values x1, x2, ... ,xn and an associative binary operation o, the prefix problem is to compute x1ox2o··· oxi, 1in. Many combinational circuits for solving the prefix problem, called prefix circuits, have been designed. It has been proved that the size s(D(n)) and the depth d(D(n)) of an n-input prefix circuit D(n) satisfy the inequality d(D(n))+s(D(n))2n–2; thus, a prefix circuit is depth-size optimal if d(D(n))+s(D(n))=2n–2. In this paper, we construct a new depth-size optimal prefix circuit SL(n). In addition, we can build depth-size optimal prefix circuits whose depth can be any integer between d(SL(n)) and n–1. SL(n) has the same maximum fan-out lgn+1 as Snir's SN(n), but the depth of SL(n) is smaller; thus, SL(n) is faster. Compared with another optimal prefix circuit LYD(n), d(LYD(n))+2d(SL(n))d(LYD(n)). However, LYD(n) may have a fan-out of at most 2 lgn–2, and the fan-out of LYD(n) is greater than that of SL(n) for almost all n12. Because an operation node with greater fan-out occupies more chip area and is slower in VLSI implementation, in most cases, SL(n) needs less area and may be faster than LYD(n). The concept of information is virtually ubiquitous in contemporary cognitive science. It is claimed to be processed (in cognitivist theories of perception and comprehension), stored (in cognitivist theories of memory and recognition), and otherwise manipulated and transformed by the human central nervous system. Fred Dretske's extensive philosophical defense of a theory of informational content (semantic information) based upon the Shannon-Weaver formal theory of information is subjected to critical scrutiny. A major difficulty is identified in Dretske's equivocations in the use of the concept of a signal bearing informational content. Gibson's alternative conception of information (construed as analog by Dretske), while avoiding many of the problems located in the conventional use of signal, raises different but equally serious questions. It is proposed that, taken literally, the human CNS does not extract or process information at all; rather, whatever information is construed as locatable in the CNS is information only for an observer-theorist and only for certain purposes.Blood courses through our veins, andinformation through our central nervous system.— A Neuropsychology Textbook.  相似文献

Recently, researchers have mainly been interested only in the search for data content that are globally similar to the query and not in the search for inside data items. This paper presents an algorithm, called a generalized virtual node (GVN) algorithm, to search for data items where parts (subdatatype) are similar to the incoming query. We call this subdatatype-based multimedia retrieval. Each multimedia datatype, such as image and audio is represented in this paper as a k-dimensional signal in the spatio-temporal domain. A k-dimensional signal is transformed into characteristic features and these features are stored in a hierarchical multidimensional structure, called the k-tree. Each node on the k-tree contains partial content corresponding to the spatial and/or temporal positions in the data. The k-tree structure allows us to build a unified retrieval model for any types of multimedia data. It also eliminates unnecessary comparisons of cross-media querying. The experimental results of the use of the new GVN algorithm for subaudio and subimage retrievals show that it takes much less retrieval times than other earlier algorithms such as brute-force and the partial-matching algorithm, while the accuracy is acceptable.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Es geht in dieser Arbeit in der Hauptsache darum, ein vorgelegtes Differentialgleichungssystem so zu skalieren, daß in der zugehörigen Analogrechnerschaltung die Spannungen an den Ausgängen der Integratoren die durch die Referenzspannung einerseits und durch das Auflösevermögen andererseits gesetzten Schranken nicht über- bzw. unterschreiten. Es werden Abschätzungssätze hergeleitet, die diese Frage im Apriori-Sinn, also ohne die Lösung des Differentialgleichungssystems zu kennen, zu lösen gestatten. Zur Abschätzung werden zunächst Normen, dannKamke-Normen verwendet. Der im Titel erwähnte Satz vonPerron ergibt sich durch spezielle Normengebung und Verzicht auf Abschätzung nach unten. Erschwert werden die Betrachtungen durch die relative Schwäche der Forderung, daß die rechte Seite des Systemsdx/dt=f(x,t) der Bedingung aus xa folgt f(x,t)v(t)x genüge (...:=Norm,a positiv reell). Dadurch scheint es bei Abschätzungen mitKamke-Normen nicht mehr möglich, von den in der Literatur über Existenzbeweise und Abschätzungssätze üblichen Methoden Gebrauch zu machen. Zur Lösung dieser Frage wird eine bedingte Form des bekannten Satzes vonGronwall (auch Satz vonBellman genannt) entwickelt.

Summary The main subject of this paper is the scaling of a given set of differential equations in such a way that the output voltages of the integrators of the associated analogue computer set-up do not exceed certain upper and lower bounds imposed by the reference voltage and the limited power of resolution of the elements of the analogue computer. The paper gives a priori bounds on the solution of the differential set. Some of these bounds work with norms, others withKamke-norms.Perron's stability theorem mentioned in the title of this paper results by inserting special norms and neglecting lower bounds. A difficulty arises by the relative weakness of the condition xa implies f(x,t)v(t)x on the right hand side of the setdx/dt=f(x,t), where ... is any norm anda is a positive real constant. As a consequence of this, it seems no longer possible to use the usual techniques known from the literature on existence theorems and bounds for the solution of differential equations. To cope with this situation, a conditional version of the well-known theorem ofGronwall (also known by the name of Lemma ofBellman) will be derived.

A neural network for recognition of handwritten musical notes, based on the well-known Neocognitron model, is described. The Neocognitron has been used for the what pathway (symbol recognition), while contextual knowledge has been applied for the where (symbol placement). This way, we benefit from dividing the process for dealing with this complicated recognition task. Also, different degrees of intrusiveness in learning have been incorporated in the same network: More intrusive supervised learning has been implemented in the lower neuron layers and less intrusive in the upper one. This way, the network adapts itself to the handwriting of the user. The network consists of a 13×49 input layer and three pairs of simple and complex neuron layers. It has been trained to recognize 20 symbols of unconnected notes on a musical staff and was tested with a set of unlearned input notes. Its recognition rate for the individual unseen notes was up to 93%, averaging 80% for all categories. These preliminary results indicate that a modified Neocognitron could be a good candidate for identification of handwritten musical notes.  相似文献

Any assessment of the cost of encoding one data structure in another must take into account, among other issues, the intended patterns of traversing the guest structure. Two such usage patterns, namely, worstedge traversal and all-edges-equally-likely traversal, are particularly significant, since any bounds on encoding costs relative to these patterns yield bounds relative to large classes of other patterns also. The foregoing remarks are formalized in this paper, and a number of techniques for bounding the costs of encodings relative to these special usage patterns are developed and exemplified. Specifically, data structures are represented here as undirected graphs; and a number of lower bounds on the costs of data encodings are derived by comparing various structural features of the guest and host graphs. Relevant features include both maximum and average vertex-degree, volume, and exposure, a measure of connectivity.A preliminary version of this paper was presented, under the title, Toward a theory of data encoding, at the Conference on Theoretical Computer Science, Waterloo, Ontario, August 15–17, 1977.  相似文献

Summary Equivalence is a fundamental notion for the semantic analysis of algebraic specifications. In this paper the notion of crypt-equivalence is introduced and studied w.r.t. two loose approaches to the semantics of an algebraic specification T: the class of all first-order models of T and the class of all term-generated models of T. Two specifications are called crypt-equivalent if for one specification there exists a predicate logic formula which implicitly defines an expansion (by new functions) of every model of that specification in such a way that the expansion (after forgetting unnecessary functions) is homologous to a model of the other specification, and if vice versa there exists another predicate logic formula with the same properties for the other specification. We speak of first-order crypt-equivalence if this holds for all first-order models, and of inductive crypt-equivalence if this holds for all term-generated models. Characterizations and structural properties of these notions are studied. In particular, it is shown that first order crypt-equivalence is equivalent to the existence of explicit definitions and that in case of positive definability two first-order crypt-equivalent specifications admit the same categories of models and homomorphisms. Similarly, two specifications which are inductively crypt-equivalent via sufficiently complete implicit definitions determine the same associated categories. Moreover, crypt-equivalence is compared with other notions of equivalence for algebraic specifications: in particular, it is shown that first-order cryptequivalence is strictly coarser than abstract semantic equivalence and that inductive crypt-equivalence is strictly finer than inductive simulation equivalence and implementation equivalence.  相似文献

This paper is an informal introduction to the theory of types which use a connective for the intersection of two types and a constant for a universal type, besides the usual connective for function-types. This theory was first devised in about 1977 by Coppo, Dezani and Sallé in the context of-calculus and its main development has been by Coppo and Dezani and their collaborators in Turin. With suitable axioms and rules to assign types to-calculus terms, they obtained a system in which (i) the set of types given to a term does not change under-conversion, (ii) some interesting sets of terms, for example the solvable terms and the terms with normal form, can be characterised exactly by the types of their members, and (iii) the type-apparatus is not so complex as polymorphic systems with quantifier-containing types and therefore probably not so expensive to implement mechanically as these systems.There are in fact several variant systems with different detailed properties. This paper defines and motivates the simplest one from which the others are derived, and describes its most basic properties. No proofs are given but the motivation is shown by examples. A key managerial challenge, of interest to academics and practitioners alike, is the assessment and management of customer satisfaction. In this paper, we examine the underlying processes involving consumer satisfaction and switching patterns among ISPs using different satisfaction models, including the expectations-disconfirmation model, the attribution model, and an affective model. Our results indicate that the satisfaction levels of ISP consumers are generally relatively low, despite the fact that consumer expectations of ISPs are also low, reflecting mediocrity in the marketplace. In addition, consumers attribute their dissatisfaction to ISP indifference and believe that managing dissatisfaction is within the control of the ISP. Moreover, affective factors play an important role in satisfaction processes and switching behavior. Customer service including technical support and responsiveness of service staff is an important determinant factor in ISP selection. We suggest that as the ISP market matures, service providers that pay attention to affective factors and to building relationships with their customers will have a competitive advantage in the marketplace of the future.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the numerical solution of a model equation u xx = exp(– ) (and several slightly more general problems) when 1 using the standard central difference scheme on nonuniform grids. In particular, we are interested in the error behaviour in two limiting cases: (i) the total mesh point number N is fixed when the regularization parameter 0, and (ii) is fixed when N. Using a formal analysis, we show that a generalized version of a special piecewise uniform mesh 12 and an adaptive grid based on the equidistribution principle share some common features. And the optimal meshes give rates of convergence bounded by |log()| as 0 and N is given, which are shown to be sharp by numerical tests.  相似文献

Summary Making use of the fact that two-level grammars (TLGs) may be thought of as finite specification of context-free grammars (CFGs) with infinite sets of productions, known techniques for parsing CFGs are applied to TLGs by first specifying a canonical CFG G — called skeleton grammar — obtained from the cross-reference of the TLG G. Under very natural restrictions it can be shown that for these grammar pairs (G, G) there exists a 1 — 1 correspondence between leftmost derivations in G and leftmost derivations in G. It is not yet known (1997) whether the Solar system is stable or not. Common belief is that the Solar system is stable if and only if it is not a resonant system, i.e., whenever its orbital frequencies i satisfy an inequality | nii| for i|ni| N; a similar inequality is true for randomly chosen frequencies. Summary This paper is devoted to developing and studying a precise notion of the encoding of a logical data structure in a physical storage structure, that is motivated by considerations of computational efficiency. The development builds upon the notion of an encoding of one graph in another. The cost of such an encoding is then defined so as to reflect the structural compatibility of the two graphs, the (externally specified) costs of implementing the host graph, and the (externally specified) set of intended usage patterns of the guest graph. The stability of the constructed framework is demonstrated in terms of a number of results; the faithfulness of the formalism is argued in terms of a number of examples from the literature; and the tractability of the model is hinted at by several results and by further references to the literature.  相似文献

Because a system's software architecture strongly influences its quality attributes such as modifiability, performance, and security, it is important to analyze and reason about that architecture. However, architectural documentation frequently does not exist, and when it does, it is often out of sync with the implemented system. In addition, it is rare that software development begins with a clean slate; systems are almost always constrained by existing legacy code. As a consequence, we need to be able to extract information from existing system implementations and utilize this information for architectural reasoning. This paper presents Dali, an open, lightweight workbench that aids an analyst in extracting, manipulating, and interpreting architectural information. By assisting in the reconstruction of architectures from extracted information, Dali helps an analyst redocument architectures, discover the relationship between as-implemented and as-designed architectures, analyze architectural quality attributes and plan for architectural change.  相似文献

When verifying concurrent systems described by transition systems, state explosion is one of the most serious problems. If quantitative temporal information (expressed by clock ticks) is considered, state explosion is even more serious. We present a notion of abstraction of transition systems, where the abstraction is driven by the formulae of a quantitative temporal logic, called qu-mu-calculus, defined in the paper. The abstraction is based on a notion of bisimulation equivalence, called , n-equivalence, where is a set of actions and n is a natural number. It is proved that two transition systems are , n-equivalent iff they give the same truth value to all qu-mu-calculus formulae such that the actions occurring in the modal operators are contained in , and with time constraints whose values are less than or equal to n. We present a non-standard (abstract) semantics for a timed process algebra able to produce reduced transition systems for checking formulae. The abstract semantics, parametric with respect to a set of actions and a natural number n, produces a reduced transition system , n-equivalent to the standard one. A transformational method is also defined, by means of which it is possible to syntactically transform a program into a smaller one, still preserving , n-equivalence.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the linear interval tolerance problem, which consists of finding the largest interval vector included in ([A], [b]) = {x R n | A [A], b [b], Ax = b}. We describe two different polyhedrons that represent subsets of all possible interval vectors in ([A], [b]), and we provide a new definition of the optimality of an interval vector included in ([A], [b]).
