It can be argued that the quality of software management has an effect on the degree of success or failure of a software development program. We have developed a metric for measuring the quality of software management along four dimensions: requirements management, estimation/planning management, people management, and risk management. The quality management metric (QMM) for a software development program manager is a composite score obtained using a questionnaire administered to both the program manager and a sample of his or her peers. The QMM is intended to both characterize the quality of software management and serve as a template for improving software management performance. We administered the questionnaire to measure the performance of managers responsible for large software development programs within the US Department of Defense (DOD). Informal verification and validation of the metric compared the QMM score to an overall program-success score for the entire program; this resulted in a positive correlation.  相似文献

This paper presents quality of service (QoS) metrics for continuity and synchronization specifications in continuous media (CM). Proposed metrics specify continuity and synchronization, with tolerable limits on average and bursty defaults from perfect continuity, timing and synchronization constraints. These metrics can be used in a distributed environment for resource allocation. Continuity specification of a CM stream consists of its sequencing, display rate and drift profiles. The sequencing profile of a CM stream consists of tolerable aggregate and consecutive frame miss ratios. Rate profiles specify the average rendition rate and its variation. Given a rate profile, the ideal time unit for frame display is determined as an offset from the beginning of the stream. Drift profile specifies the average and bursty deviation of schedules for frames from such fixed points in time. Synchronization requirements of a collection of CM streams are specified by mixing, rate and synchronization drift profiles. Mixing profiles specify vectors of frames that can be displayed simultaneously. They consist of average and bursty losses of synchronization. Rate profiles consist of average rates and permissible deviations thereof. Synchronization drift profiles specify permissible aggregate and bursty time drifts between schedules of simultaneously displayable frames. It is shown that rate profiles of a collection of synchronized streams is definable in terms of rate profiles of its component streams. It is also shown that mixing and drift profiles of a collection of streams are non-definable in terms of sequencing and drift profiles of its constituents. An important consequence of the mutual independence of synchronization and continuity specification is that, in a general purpose platform with limited resources, synchronized display of CM streams may require QoS tradeoffs. An algorithm that makes such tradeoffs is presented as a proof of applicability of our metrics in a realistic environment.  相似文献

Summaries are an essential component of video retrieval and browsing systems. Most research in video summarization has focused on content analysis to obtain compact yet comprehensive representations of video items. However, important aspects such as how they can be effectively integrated in mobile interfaces and how to predict the quality and usability of the summaries have not been investigated. Conventional summaries are limited to a single instance with certain length (i.e. a single scale). In contrast, scalable summaries target representations with multiple scales, that is, a set of summaries with increasing length in which longer summaries include more information about the video. Thus, scalability provides high flexibility that can be exploited in devices such as smartphones or tablets to provide versions of the summary adapted to the limited visualization area. In this paper, we explore the application of scalable storyboards to summary adaptation and zoomable video navigation in handheld devices. By introducing a new adaptation dimension related with the summarization scale, we can formulate navigation and adaptation in a two-dimensional adaptation space, where different navigation actions modify the trajectory in that space. We also describe the challenges to evaluate scalable summaries and some usability issues that arise from having multiple scales, proposing some objective metrics that can provide useful insight about their potential quality and usability without requiring very costly user studies. Experimental results show a reasonable agreement with the trends shown in subjective evaluations. Experiments also show that content-based scalable storyboards are less redundant and useful than the content-blind baselines.  相似文献

In component‐based development, software systems are built by assembling components already developed and prepared for integration. To estimate the quality of components, complexity, reusability, dependability, and maintainability are the key aspects. The quality of an individual component influences the quality of the overall system. Therefore, there is a strong need to select the best quality component, both from functional and nonfunctional aspects. The present paper produces a critical analysis of metrics for various quality aspects for components and component‐based systems. These aspects include four main quality factors: complexity, dependency, reusability, and maintainability. A systematic study is applied to find as much literature as possible. A total of 49 papers were found suitable after a defined search criteria. The analysis provided in this paper has a different objective as we focused on efficiency and practical ability of the proposed approach in the selected papers. The various key attributes from these two are defined. Each paper is evaluated based on the various key parameters viz. metrics definition, implementation technique, validation, usability, data source, comparative analysis, practicability, and extendibility. The paper critically examines various quality aspects and their metrics for component‐based systems. In some papers, authors have also compared the results with other techniques. For characteristics like complexity and dependency, most of the proposed metrics are analytical. Soft computing and evolutionary approaches are either not being used or much less explored so far for these aspects, which may be the future concern for the researchers. In addition, hybrid approaches like neuro‐fuzzy, neuro‐genetic, etc., may also be examined for evaluation of these aspects. However, to conclude that one particular technique is better than others may not be appropriate. It may be true for one characteristic by considering different set of inputs and dataset but may not be true for the same with different inputs. The intension in the proposed work is to give a score for each metric proposed by the researchers based on the selected parameters, but certainly not to criticize any research contribution by authors. In this paper, an intranet portal is considered as an information infrastructure (organizational memory information system, OMIS) supporting organizational learning. The properties and the hierarchical structure of information and knowledge in an intranet portal OMIS was identified as a problem for navigation tools of an intranet portal interface. The problem relates to navigation and retrieval functions of intranet portal OMIS and is expected to adversely affect user performance, satisfaction, and usefulness. To solve the problem, a conceptual model for navigation tools of an intranet portal interface was proposed and an experiment using a crossover design was conducted with 10 participants. In the experiment, a separate access method (tabbed tree tool) was compared to an unified access method (single tree tool). The results indicate that each information/knowledge repository for which a user has a different structural knowledge should be handled separately with a separate access to increase user satisfaction and the usefulness of the OMIS and to improve user performance in navigation.  相似文献

An intranet portal is proposed as an information infrastructure to support organizational learning. Specifically, an agent-like metadata filter for easy information/knowledge retrieval in the intranet portal is suggested and tested. The metadata filter preserves the context of digital objects and presents an uncluttered window by controlling the metadata elements. An experiment using 20 participants examined whether the metadata filter reduces search and retrieval performance time (the dependent variable). The main results indicate that the metadata filter significantly (36%) improved user's performance in identifying information. The results of the study suggest that the proposed metadata filer may be an effective interface tool to improve users' performances in identifying information in an intranet portal organizational memory information system.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a systematization of techniques that use quality metrics to help in the visual exploration of meaningful patterns in high-dimensional data. In a number of recent papers, different quality metrics are proposed to automate the demanding search through large spaces of alternative visualizations (e.g., alternative projections or ordering), allowing the user to concentrate on the most promising visualizations suggested by the quality metrics. Over the last decade, this approach has witnessed a remarkable development but few reflections exist on how these methods are related to each other and how the approach can be developed further. For this purpose, we provide an overview of approaches that use quality metrics in high-dimensional data visualization and propose a systematization based on a thorough literature review. We carefully analyze the papers and derive a set of factors for discriminating the quality metrics, visualization techniques, and the process itself. The process is described through a reworked version of the well-known information visualization pipeline. We demonstrate the usefulness of our model by applying it to several existing approaches that use quality metrics, and we provide reflections on implications of our model for future research.  相似文献

Presents empirical evidence that metrics on communication artifacts generated by groupware tools can be used to gain significant insight into the development process that produced them. We describe a test-bed for developing and testing communication metrics, a senior-level software engineering project course at Carnegie Mellon University, in which we conducted several studies and experiments from 1991-1996 with more than 400 participants. Such a test-bed is an ideal environment for empirical software engineering, providing sufficient realism while allowing for controlled observation of important project parameters. We describe three proof-of-concept experiments to illustrate the value of communication metrics in software development projects. Measuring system coupling is a commonly accepted software engineering practice associated with producing high-quality software products. Coupling metrics traditionally measure data passed across a module interface to determine couplings between modules in a given system. XML has become common in Internet-based application domains such as business-to-business and business-to-consumer applications, and has formed a basis for service-oriented architectures such as Web services and the Semantic Web. We therefore need new coupling metrics that address these systems' unique requirements. We propose a set of coupling metrics for ontology-based systems represented in OWL: the number of external classes (NEC), reference to external classes (REC), and referenced includes (RI). To collect these metrics, we use a standard XML-based parser. This research reflects a new type of coupling measurement for system development that defines coupling metrics based on ontology data and its structure.  相似文献

Directly optimizing an information retrieval (IR) metric has become a hot topic in the field of learning to rank. Conventional wisdom believes that it is better to train for the loss function on which will be used for evaluation. But we often observe different results in reality. For example, directly optimizing averaged precision achieves higher performance than directly optimizing precision@3 when the ranking results are evaluated in terms of precision@3. This motivates us to combine multiple metrics in the process of optimizing IR metrics. For simplicity we study learning with two metrics. Since we usually conduct the learning process in a restricted hypothesis space, e.g., linear hypothesis space, it is usually difficult to maximize both metrics at the same time. To tackle this problem, we propose a relaxed approach in this paper. Specifically, we incorporate one metric within the constraint while maximizing the other one. By restricting the feasible hypothesis space, we can get a more robust ranking model. Empirical results on the benchmark data set LETOR show that the relaxed approach is superior to the direct linear combination approach, and also outperforms other baselines.  相似文献

Information processing is essential in manufacturing, where products are produced based on available information from various sources. A number of techniques and methodologies have been developed and utilised to achieve efficient exchange of information, such as the adoption of turnkey systems, neutral standards, e.g. PDES, STEP (ISO-10303). In recent years, the Internet has become the worldwide information platform for the sharing of all kinds of information, and Intranet, which is based on Internet technology but is used within an organisation, has become a preferred platform for data sharing. This change provides a new role of Intranet/Internet technology for manufacturing, particularly for those companies struggling to gain a competitive edge in the global manufacturing area.
