In vehicular ad hoc networks, vehicles may use a routing protocol to inform emergent events, for example, car accidents or traffic jams. Hence, many of the researchers are focused on minimizing the end‐to‐end delay of the routing protocol. However, some applications, for example, email or ftp, are not time critical, and radio spectrum is a limited resource. Hence, delay‐bounded routing protocol, whose goal is to deliver messages to the destination within user‐defined delay and minimize the usage of radio, has become an important issue. The delay‐bounded routing protocols deliver message to the destination by the hybrid of data muling (carried by the vehicle) and forwarding (transmitted through radio). When the available time is enough, the message will be delivered by muling; otherwise, it will be delivered by forwarding. However, in an urban area, there are many traffic lights, which may greatly affect the performance of the delay‐bounded routing protocols. Existing works do not consider the effect of traffic lights, and hence, it may adopt an improper delivery strategy and thus wastes much available time. To improve previous works, we propose a novel delay‐bounded routing protocol, which has considered the effect of traffic lights. Whenever a vehicle passes an intersection, it will gather the information of the traffic light and traffic load of the next road section, and thus, it can make a more accurate prediction and adopt a more proper strategy to deliver message. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol can make a better usage of the available time and uses less radio resource to deliver the message in time. Position-based routing has proven to be well suited for highly dynamic environment such as Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANET) due to its simplicity. Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (GPSR) and Greedy Perimeter Coordinator Routing (GPCR) both use greedy algorithms to forward packets by selecting relays with the best progress towards the destination or use a recovery mode in case such solutions fail. These protocols could forward packets efficiently given that the underlying network is fully connected. However, the dynamic nature of vehicular network, such as vehicle density, traffic pattern, and radio obstacles could create unconnected networks partitions. To this end, we propose GeoDTN+Nav, a hybrid geographic routing solution enhancing the standard greedy and recovery modes exploiting the vehicular mobility and on-board vehicular navigation systems to efficiently deliver packets even in partitioned networks. GeoDTN+Nav outperforms standard geographic routing protocols such as GPSR and GPCR because it is able to estimate network partitions and then improves partitions reachability by using a store-carry-forward procedure when necessary. We propose a virtual navigation interface (VNI) to provide generalized route information to optimize such forwarding procedure. We finally evaluate the benefit of our approach first analytically and then with simulations. By using delay tolerant forwarding in sparse networks, GeoDTN+Nav greatly increases the packet delivery ratio of geographic routing protocols and provides comparable routing delay to benchmark DTN algorithms.  相似文献

Routing protocols for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have attracted a lot of attention recently. Most of the researches emphasize on minimizing the end‐to‐end delay without paying attention to reducing the usage of radio. This paper focuses on delay‐bounded routing, whose goal is to deliver messages to the destination within user‐defined delay and to minimize the usage of radio because radio spectrum is a limited resource. The messages can be delivered to the destination by the hybrid of data muling (carried by the vehicle) and forwarding (transmitted through radio). In the existing protocol, a vehicle may only switch the delivery strategy (muling or forwarding) at an intersection according to the available time of the next road segment, which is between the current intersection and the next intersection. To improve previous works, our protocol uses linear regression to predict the available time and the traveling distance, and thus, the vehicle can switch to a proper delivery strategy at a proper moment and can reduce the number of relays by radio. Our protocol contains two schemes: the greedy and centralized schemes. The greedy scheme uses only the current sampling data to predict the available time and decide when to switch the delivery strategy, whereas the centralized scheme uses the global statistical information to choose a minimum‐cost path. The characteristics of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) make the design of routing protocol a great challenge. In this paper, we propose a vehicle density and load aware routing protocol for VANETs called VDLA. VDLA adopts sequential selection of junctions to construct the route. The selection is based on the real‐time vehicle density, the traffic load, and the distance to the destination. The network information is collected by a decentralized mechanism. Through factoring in these metrics, the packets are avoided being sent to roads where network is disconnected, and the network load is balanced to mitigate network congestion. The intermediate junctions are selected before the packet reaches a junction to reduce the unnecessary hops. Our study also investigates the impact of the high mobility of the nodes. An analytical framework is proposed to analyze the mobility. Based on the analysis, the traditional Hello scheme is enhanced to improve the accuracy of the neighbor table. In the simulation, we compare VDLA with greedy perimeter coordinator routing and GpsrJ+, which are geographic routings protocols proposed for VANETs. The results validate the superiority of VDLA in terms of end‐to‐end delay and packet delivery rate. And the superiority holds in different scenarios. Information and communication technologies have changed the way of operations in all fields. These technologies also have adopted for wireless communication and provide low cost and convenient solutions. Vehicular ad hoc networks are envisioned with their special and unique intercommunication systems to provide safety in intelligent transportation systems and support large‐size networks. Due to dense and sparse traffic conditions, routing is always a challenging task to establish reliable and effective communication among vehicle nodes in the highly transportable environment. Several types of routing protocols have been proposed to handle high mobility and dynamic topologies including topology‐based routing, position and geocast routing, and cluster‐based routing protocols. Cluster‐based routing is one of the feasible solutions for vehicular networks due to its manageable and more viable nature. In cluster‐based protocols, the network is divided into many clusters and each cluster selects a cluster head for data dissemination. In this study, we investigate the current routing challenges and trend of cluster‐based routing protocols. In addition, we also proposed a Cluster‐based Routing for Sparse and Dense Networks to handle dynamic topologies, the high‐mobility of vehicle nodes. In the last decade, underwater wireless sensor networks have been widely studied because of their peculiar aspects that distinguish them from common terrestrial wireless networks. Their applications range from environmental monitoring to military defense. The definition of efficient routing protocols in underwater sensor networks is a challenging topic of research because of the intrinsic characteristics of these networks, such as the need of handling the node mobility and the difficulty in balancing the energy consumed by the nodes. Depth‐based routing protocol is an opportunistic routing protocol for underwater sensor networks, which provides good performance both under high and low node mobility scenarios. The main contribution of our work is presenting a novel simulator for studying depth‐based routing protocol and its variants as well as novel routing protocols. Our simulator is based on AquaSim–Next Generation, which is a specialized tool for studying underwater networks. With our work, we improve the state of the art of underwater routing protocol simulators by implementing, among other features, a detailed cross‐layer communication and an accurate model of the operational modes of acoustic modem and their energy consumption. The simulator is open source and freely downloadable. Moreover, we propose a novel and completely distributed routing protocol, named residual energy–depth‐based routing. It takes into account the residual energy at the nodes' batteries to select the forwarder nodes and improve the network lifetime by providing a more uniform energy consumption among them. We compare its performance with that of depth‐based routing protocol and a receiver‐based routing protocol implementing a probabilistic opportunistic forwarding scheme.  相似文献

Energy efficiency has become an important design consideration in geographic routing protocols for wireless sensor networks because the sensor nodes are energy constrained and battery recharging is usually not feasible. However, numerous existing energy‐aware geographic routing protocols are energy‐inefficient when the detouring mode is involved in the routing. Furthermore, most of them rarely or at most implicitly take into account the energy efficiency in the advance. In this paper, we present a novel energy‐aware geographic routing (EAGR) protocol that attempts to minimize the energy consumption for end‐to‐end data delivery. EAGR adaptively uses an existing geographic routing protocol to find an anchor list based on the projection distance of nodes for guiding packet forwarding. Each node holding the message utilizes geographic information, the characteristics of energy consumption, and the metric of advanced energy cost to make forwarding decisions, and dynamically adjusts its transmission power to just reach the selected node. Simulation results demonstrate that our scheme exhibits higher energy efficiency, smaller end‐to‐end delay, and better packet delivery ratio compared to other geographic routing protocols. In a vehicular ad‐hoc network (VANET), vehicles can play an essential role in monitoring areas of a smart city by transmitting data or multimedia content of environmental circumstances like disasters or road conditions. Multimedia content communication with quality of experience (QoE) guarantees is a challenging undertaking in an environment such as that of a VANET. Indeed, a VANET is characterized by numerous varying conditions, significantly impacting its topology, quality of communication channels, and paths with respect to bandwidth, loss, and delay. This paper introduces a link efficiency and quality of experience aware routing protocol (LEQRV) to improve video streaming provisioning in urban vehicular ad‐hoc networks. LEQRV uses an enhanced greedy forwarding‐based approach to create and maintain stable high quality routes for video streaming delivery. It improves the performance of the quality of experience by increasing the achieved QoE scores and reducing the forwarding end‐to‐end delay and frame loss.  相似文献

The new information and communication technologies have changed the trend of communication in all fields. The transportation sector is one of the emerging field, where vehicles are communicating with each other or with infrastructure for different safety and comfort applications in the network. Vehicular ad hoc networks is one of the emerging multi-hop communication type of intelligent transportation field to deal with high mobility and dynamic vehicular traffic to deliver data packets in the network. The high mobility and dynamic topologies make the communication links unreliable and leads to frequent disconnectivity, delay and packet dropping issues in the network. To address these issues, we proposed a road aware geographical routing protocol for urban vehicular ad hoc networks. The proposed routing protocol uses distance, direction and traffic density routing metrics to forward the data towards the destination. The simulation results explore the better performance of proposed protocol in terms of data delivery, network delay and compared it with existing geographical routing protocols.

This paper presents a geographic routing protocol, boundary state routing (BSR), which consists of two components. The first is an improved forwarding strategy, greedy-bounded compass, which can forward packets around concave boundaries, where the packet moves away from the destination without looping. The second component is a boundary mapping protocol (BMP), which is used to maintain link state information for boundaries containing concave vertices. The proposed forwarding strategy greedy-bounded compass is shown to produce a higher rate of path completion than Greedy forwarding and significantly improves the performance of greedy perimeter state routing (GPSR) in sparse networks when used in place of greedy forwarding. The proposed geographic routing protocol BSR is shown to produce significant improvements in performance in comparison to GPSR in sparse networks due to informed decisions regarding the direction of boundary traversal at local minima.  相似文献

The nodes in a wireless ad hoc network act as routers in a self‐configuring network without infrastructure. An application running on the nodes in the ad hoc network may require that intermediate nodes act as routers, receiving and forwarding data packets to other nodes to overcome the limitations of noise, router congestion and limited transmission power. In existing routing protocols, the ‘self‐configuring’ aspects of network construction have generally been limited to the construction of routes that minimize the number of intermediate nodes on a route while ignoring the effects that the resulting traffic has on the overall communication capacity of the network. This paper presents a context‐aware routing metric that factors the effects of environmental noise and router congestion into a single time‐based metric, and further presents a new cross‐layer routing protocol, called Warp‐5 (Wireless Adaptive Routing Protocol, Version 5), that uses the new metric to make better routing decisions in heterogeneous network systems. Simulation results for Warp‐5 are presented and compared to the existing, well‐known AODV (Ad hoc On‐Demand Distance Vector) routing protocol and the reinforcement‐learning based routing protocol, Q‐routing. The results show Warp‐5 to be superior to shortest path routing protocols and Q‐routing for preventing router congestion and packet loss due to noise. A Vehicular Ad hoc Network is a type of wireless ad hoc network that facilitates ubiquitous connectivity between vehicles in the absence of fixed infrastructure. Source based geographical routing has been proven to perform well in unstable vehicular networks. However, these routing protocols leverage beacon messages to update the positional information of all direct neighbour nodes. As a result, high channel congestion or problems with outdated neighbour lists may occur. To this end, we propose a street-aware, Intelligent Beaconless (IB) geographical forwarding protocol based on modified 802.11 Request To Send (RTS)/ Clear To Send frames, for urban vehicular networks. That is, at the intersection, each candidate junction node leverage digital road maps as well as distance to destination, power signal strength of the RTS frame and direction routing metrics to determine if it should elect itself as a next relay node. For packet forwarding between Intersections, on the other hand, the candidate node considers the relative direction to the packet carrier node and power signal strength of the RTS frame as routing metrics to elect itself based on intelligently combined metrics. After designing the IB protocol, we implemented it and compared it with standard protocols. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol can improve average delay and successful packet delivery ratio in realistic wireless channel conditions and urban vehicular scenarios.  相似文献

The aim of the research is to regulate the vehicular traffic in the most effective and efficient way in Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANET). The challenges faced by the existing networks are ripple effect of reclustering, communication complexity, mobility, throughput and delay in an urban environment. Moreover unpredictable topology changes in VANET, obstruct expected packet delivery ratio and leads to congestion by overheads for link maintenance. The existing routing techniques suffer from excessive loss of data, delay and need for continuous monitoring where group member’s loss their link in randomwaypoint mobility scenarios. In this paper, a novel hierarchical model combining the features of hierarchical clustering, hybrid mobility model and location based 2hop Multicast Flooding (L2MF) for data forwarding has been proposed. By comparing the proposed protocol with previous protocols, the enhanced performance in packet delivery ratio, control overhead, and end-to-end delay has been proved.  相似文献

Because of the wide range of applications, many geographic routing protocols have been proposed in three‐dimensional (3D) wireless sensor networks. However, all the methods require assistance from a global positioning system (GPS), which is not always available. In this paper, we propose a method of constructing an axis‐based virtual coordinate assignment in 3D wireless sensor networks (ABVCap_3D) that requires no GPS assistance. We also propose a routing protocol based on ABVCap_3D, which guarantees packet delivery in 3D networks. Using simulations, we evaluate the performance of ABVCap_3D routing and other well‐known routing protocols, such as greedy‐random‐greedy routing, greedy‐hull‐greedy routing, and the routing based on axis‐based virtual coordinate assignment in 2D wireless sensor networks (ABVCap routing). Simulations show that ABVCap_3D routing requires significantly relative lower cost for guaranteeing packet delivery in comparison with ABVCap routing. This paper proposes a new cross‐layer optimization algorithm for wireless mesh networks (WMNs). CDMA/TDD (code division multiple access/time division duplex) is utilized and a couple of TDD timeslot scheduling schemes are proposed for the mesh network backbone. Cross‐layer optimization involves simultaneous consideration of the signal to interference‐plus‐noise ratio (SINR) at the physical layer, traffic load estimation and allocation at medium access control (MAC) layer, and routing decision at the network layer. Adaptive antennas are utilized by the wireless mesh routers to take advantage of directional beamforming. The optimization formulation is subject to routing constraints and can be solved by general nonlinear optimization techniques. Comparisons are made with respect to the classic shortest‐path routing algorithm in the network layer. The results reveal that the average end‐to‐end successful packet rate (SPR) can be significantly improved by the cross‐layer approach. This paper proposed a connectivity-based multi-lane geographic routing protocol (CGRP) for vehicular ad hoc networks. The proposed CGRP is based on an effective selection of road intersections through which a package must pass from source to destination. The cooperative connectivity probability and delay are taken into consideration when choosing the most suitable path for delay-sensitive safety traffic. Analytical expressions for cooperative connectivity probability is derived based on a three-lanes path model. Geographical forwarding is used to transfer packets between any two intersections on the path, reducing the path sensitivity to individual node movements. Furthermore, forwarding packets between two adjacent intersections also depend on geographic location information. Neighbor nodes’ priority are assigned according to position, speed, direction and other factors. Node with the highest priority will be selected as the next hop. Numerical and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the exsiting routing protocols in terms of the end-to-end delay and the number of hops with a little cost of routing overhead in city environments.  相似文献

Routing in ad hoc networks is a complicated task because of many reasons. The nodes are low-memory, low-powered, and they cannot maintain routing tables large enough for well-known routing protocols. Because of that, greedy forwarding at intermediate nodes is desirable in ad hoc networks. Also, for traffic engineering, multi-path capabilities are important. So, it is desirable to define routes at the source like in source based routing (SBR) while performing greedy forwarding at intermediate nodes.We investigate trajectory-based routing (TBR) which was proposed as a middle-ground between SBR and greedy forwarding techniques. In TBR, source encodes trajectory to be traversed and embeds it into each packet. Upon the arrival of each packet, intermediate nodes decode the trajectory and employ greedy forwarding techniques such that the packet follows its trajectory as much as possible.In this paper, we address various issues regarding implementation of TBR. We also provide techniques to efficiently forward packets along a trajectory defined as a parametric curve. We use the well-known Bezier parametric curve for encoding trajectories into packets at source. Research on vehicular ad hoc networks has focused mainly on efficient routing protocol design under conditions where there are relatively large numbers of closely spaced vehicles. These routing protocols are designed principally for urban areas with high node density and fully connected networks and are not suitable for packet delivery in a sparse, partially connected VANET. In this article, we examine the challenges of VANETs in sparse network conditions, review alternatives including epidemic routing, and propose a border node-based routing protocol for partially connected VANETs. The BBR protocol can tolerate network partition due to low node density and high node mobility. The performance of epidemic routing and BBR are evaluated with a geographic and traffic information- based mobility model that captures typical highway conditions. The simulation results show that under rural network conditions, a limited flooding protocol such as BBR performs well and offers the advantage of not relying on a location service required by other protocols proposed for VANETs.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop a delay‐centric parallel multi‐path routing protocol for multi‐hop cognitive radio ad hoc networks. First, we analyze the end‐to‐end delay of multi‐path routing based on queueing theory and present a new dynamic traffic assignment scheme for multi‐path routing with the objective of minimizing end‐to‐end delay, considering both spectrum availability and link data rate. The problem is formulated as a convex problem and solved by a gradient‐based search method to obtain optimal traffic assignments. Furthermore, a heuristic decentralized traffic assignment scheme for multi‐path routing is presented. Then, based on the delay analysis and the 3D conflict graph that captures spectrum opportunity and interference among paths, we present a route discovery and selection scheme. Via extensive NS2‐based simulation, we show that the proposed protocol outperforms the benchmark protocols significantly and achieves the shortest end‐to‐end delay. 针对传统路由协议端到端时延长、丢包率过高的现实问题,提出了一种基于贪婪转发的能量感知多路径路由协议(Greedy Forward Energy-aware Multipath Routing Protocol,GFEMRP)。GFEMRP从传感器起始结点出发,如果遇到网络黑洞则选择周边转发方式,否则将选择吞吐量大、且更接近于目的结点的结点作为下一跳结点。利用了OMNET++5.0和INET框架对包括无线自组网按需平面距离向量路由协议(Ad hoc on-demand distance vector routing protocol,AODV),动态按需无线自组织网络(Dynamic MANET On-demand,DYMO),贪婪周边无状态路由无线网络(Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing for Wireless Networks,GPSR)和GFEMRP协议在内的四种路由协议进行了仿真和比较,实验结果表明GFEMRP协议具有良好的端到端时延、丢包率等性能。  相似文献
