Using microwave technology for industrial sensing applications has the advantage of being insensitive to environmental influences. The presented near range radar has an accuracy of 0.1 mm. This high precision was achieved by using dynamic frequency divider chips for direct frequency measurement and a six-port for phase measurement at 35 GHz. A digital signal processor calculates the distance.

Within this framework, a detailed assessment of overall system security and the corresponding graphical presentation of the actual system operating state to the dispatcher is solved by using the artificial neural networks (Self-Organising Maps, SOM) of Kohonen.

Design teams are facing exponentially growing complexities and need tools that reduce the time needed to gain insight into difficult system integration problems. A new analysis tool is introduced as a means of solving these problems more quickly by tracing and recording in all layers of the system. A programmable circuit allows to trigger and filter the online data stream.

The supply with electric power is an essential factor for the economical and technical evolution of every society. Especially in the 21^st century, the economical and intellectual development of remote areas is connected to the existence of a quantitative and a qualitative supply with electric power. In many remote areas, diesel generators are installed for the supply with electric power, even in the case of an available waterpower potential in the immediate neighbourhood. One of the main reasons for the preference of diesel generators are smaller investments and less effort for installation. With the development of a small hydropower station whose electrical and mechanical equipment is completely fit in an adapted container, an ecological alternative for decentralized power supply is available. The investment which must be taken for the installation of the container power station is bigger than for a diesel generator, but it is significantly smaller than for a conventional hydro power plant with the same output.

This article describes a fieldbus architecture in which the runtime performance remains predictable during the entire process. A dual ring bus system is used for delay measurement, in which two telegrams are transmitted on both channels in opposite directions. By additional Hamming encoding of the telegrams, error correction is possible without requiring repetition of transfer. Timer modules with an accuracy of 100 μs are used for synchronisation, which are fed by a GPS receiver (Global Positioning System).

Conventional robot grippers show a limited performance in case that the objects are soft or variably structured. Objects difficult to handle are, e. g. liquid filled bags or amorphous goods. Additional issues arise if the object position is weakly defined in the working-space, as it may be the case for micro- or nano-robotic applications. The following article introduces the concept of a two-dimensional tentacle-shaped gripper with distance sensors which accomplishes an automatic approach coordination and grasping sequence for the handling of objects, coordinated by a neural controller.
