The Committee on Accreditation has approved the doctoral training programs in clinical, counseling, and school psychology that are conducted by the institutions listed in this article. In the institutions listed, the approved programs are directed by the department of psychology unless otherwise indicated. Programs that have not requested evaluation and programs that have been evaluated but not approved are not included in the list. The criteria for evaluating these programs can be obtained from the Educational Affairs Office. The Committee on Accreditation has dropped the "initial" category of accreditation. Therefore, programs which meet all of the criteria, including newly approved programs, are classified as fully approved. Inclusion of an institution in this list indicates approval of doctoral programs in clinical, counseling, and school psychology only. Inclusion or noninclusion carries no implications for other graduate programs in psychology or for programs of graduate education in other disciplines. The institutions listed below have been reported to the United States Public Health Service, to the Veterans Administration, and to the Surgeon General's Office, Department of the Army, as conducting at the present time approved programs of doctoral training in the areas indicated. The number of courses and the credit hours required in psychology for admission to the various programs were analyzed. Data were obtained from catalogs or from the Graduate Studies in Psychology 1980–1981. Results show that psychology counseling programs required considerably more psychology courses for admission than did other programs. Most nonpsychology counseling programs required no psychology courses for admission. (5 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Reports the results of a survey of 26 training directors of American Psychological Association (APA)-approved counseling psychology programs regarding the scope and status of neuropsychological assessment training opportunities. Results indicate that the availability of course work in neuropsychological assessment has increased notably, and the number of counseling psychology students pursuing such work has doubled in the preceding 18 mo. 85% of the Ss felt that training in neuropsychology was relevant to the education of a counseling psychologist. Findings are discussed in relation to the increased numbers of counseling psychology applicants to medical settings for predoctoral internship opportunities and the relevance of neuropsychological assessment to vocational readjustment and rehabilitative treatment planning. Outlines 12 characteristics of a strong and positive relationship between the academic departments of clinical and counseling psychology and the university counseling center. It is concluded that (1) for a reciprocally beneficial relationship to exist, each organization must commit itself to the importance of such a relationship; and (2) this commitment entails both the offering and soliciting of assistance in a variety of areas as well as willingness to search actively for ways to strengthen the relationship. Training directors from APA-accredited internships and counseling psychology doctoral programs reported on the status of doctoral training in psychotherapy integration. A mail survey was used to assess several areas related to psychotherapy integration, such as didactic and clinical training, faculty/staff theoretical orientation and hiring practices, student competency and evaluation, directors' beliefs about integrative/eclectic training, and internship admissions. Overall results show a positive attitude toward psychotherapy integration in predoctoral training and suggest that the foundations for further student development in psychotherapy integration exist. On the basis of the initial work of M.R. Rogers, J. Martin, and L. Druckman (1994) regarding exemplary multicultural training occurring at school psychology programs, the authors examined salient aspects of 5 American Psychological Association (APA)-approved counseling psychology and 5 APA-approved school psychology programs nominated for their reputation for multicultural training. Twenty-two percent of the program faculty represented a racial-ethnic minority group, at least 2 faculty members per program were involved in multicultural teaching, and 90% of the programs offered a multicultural course. Program faculty at the notable programs were actively involved in relevant research, routinely made presentations at national conferences regarding their scholarship, regularly participated in campuswide multicultural committees, and generally reported their university training environment to be supportive of multicultural issues.  相似文献

49 directors of American Psychological Association (APA)-approved counseling psychology programs returned surveys (80% return rate) concerning the extent to which multicultural issues were addressed in course work, practica, and research; numbers of faculty in multicultural teaching, supervision, research, and professional development; pressures to develop multicultural curricula and research; and numbers of ethnic minorities. 43 programs have at least 1 multicultural course; 31 have units in other courses; 29 have a multicultural course requirement; and in 22 programs, students may create a subspecialty. Although junior faculty was significantly more involved in all areas of multicultural training, where more senior faculty were involved there was less pressure to increase multicultural coursework, more multicultural courses required, and a subspecialty was more available. The authors present the results from a study investigating advisor-advisee relationships in counseling psychology doctoral training. Participants were 47 advisor-advisee dyads who were currently working together in an advising relationship. The results indicated that advisors and advisees exhibited significant agreement in their assessments of their advisory working alliance, the smoothness of their recent interactions, and the advisee's research competence. Alliance ratings were also associated with several relevant training variables. Neither science nor practice interest similarity between advisor and advisee was related to the quality of the advising relationship. Implications of the advisor-advisee working alliance for doctoral training are discussed, and suggestions for future research are provided. This investigation examined the multicultural counseling competencies of graduate students in counseling and clinical psychology programs. A national sample of 344 students participated. The participants completed the Multicultural Counseling Inventory (G. R. Sodowsky, R. C. Taffe, T. B. Gutkin, & S. L. Wise, 1994) and a demographic questionnaire. Results indicated that counseling psychology students rated themselves as more multiculturally competent than clinical psychology students in three of the four multicultural competency areas. Different educational and clinical variables were predictive of multicultural counseling competencies for the two groups. Findings are discussed in terms of education and training in graduate psychology programs. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
