A minus (respectively, signed) clique-transversal function of a graph G=(V,E) is a function (respectively, {−1,1}) such that uCf(u)?1 for every maximal clique C of G. The weight of a minus (respectively, signed) clique-transversal function of G is f(V)=vVf(v). The minus (respectively, signed) clique-transversal problem is to find a minus (respectively, signed) clique-transversal function of G of minimum weight. In this paper, we present a unified approach to these two problems on strongly chordal graphs. Notice that trees, block graphs, interval graphs, and directed path graphs are subclasses of strongly chordal graphs. We also prove that the signed clique-transversal problem is NP-complete for chordal graphs and planar graphs.  相似文献

Finding a dominating set of minimum cardinality is an NP-hard graph problem, even when the graph is bipartite. In this paper we are interested in solving the problem on graphs having a large independent set. Given a graph G with an independent set of size z, we show that the problem can be solved in time O(2nz), where n is the number of vertices of G. As a consequence, our algorithm is able to solve the dominating set problem on bipartite graphs in time O(2n/2). Another implication is an algorithm for general graphs whose running time is O(n1.7088).  相似文献

In a graph G, a vertex is said to dominate itself and all of its neighbors. For a fixed positive integer k, the k-tuple domination problem is to find a minimum sized vertex subset in a graph such that every vertex in the graph is dominated by at least k vertices in this set. The current paper studies k-tuple domination in graphs from an algorithmic point of view. In particular, we give a linear-time algorithm for the k-tuple domination problem in strongly chordal graphs, which is a subclass of chordal graphs and includes trees, block graphs, interval graphs and directed path graphs. We also prove that the k-tuple domination problem is NP-complete for split graphs (a subclass of chordal graphs) and for bipartite graphs.  相似文献

We show that the Dominating Set problem parameterized by solution size is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) in graphs that do not contain the claw (K1,3, the complete bipartite graph on four vertices where the two parts have one and three vertices, respectively) as an induced subgraph. We present an algorithm that uses 2O(k2)nO(1) time and polynomial space to decide whether a claw-free graph on n vertices has a dominating set of size at most k. Note that this parameterization of Dominating Set is W[2]-hard on the set of all graphs, and thus is unlikely to have an FPT algorithm for graphs in general.The most general class of graphs for which an FPT algorithm was previously known for this parameterization of Dominating Set is the class of Ki,j-free graphs, which exclude, for some fixed i,jN, the complete bipartite graph Ki,j as a subgraph. For i,j≥2, the class of claw-free graphs and any class of Ki,j-free graphs are not comparable with respect to set inclusion. We thus extend the range of graphs over which this parameterization of Dominating Set is known to be fixed-parameter tractable.We also show that, in some sense, it is the presence of the claw that makes this parameterization of the Dominating Set problem hard. More precisely, we show that for any t≥4, the Dominating Set problem parameterized by the solution size is W[2]-hard in graphs that exclude the t-claw K1,t as an induced subgraph. Our arguments also imply that the related Connected Dominating Set and Dominating Clique problems are W[2]-hard in these graph classes.Finally, we show that for any tN, the Clique problem parameterized by solution size, which is W[1]-hard on general graphs, is FPT in t-claw-free graphs. Our results add to the small and growing collection of FPT results for graph classes defined by excluded subgraphs, rather than by excluded minors.  相似文献

A certifying algorithm for a problem is an algorithm that provides a certificate with each answer that it produces. The certificate is an evidence that can be used to authenticate the correctness of the answer. A Hamiltonian cycle in a graph is a simple cycle in which each vertex of the graph appears exactly once. The Hamiltonian cycle problem is to determine whether or not a graph contains a Hamiltonian cycle. The best result for the Hamiltonian cycle problem on circular-arc graphs is an O(n2logn)-time algorithm, where n is the number of vertices of the input graph. In fact, the O(n2logn)-time algorithm can be modified as a certifying algorithm although it was published before the term certifying algorithms appeared in the literature. However, whether there exists an algorithm whose time complexity is better than O(n2logn) for solving the Hamiltonian cycle problem on circular-arc graphs has been opened for two decades. In this paper, we present an O(Δn)-time certifying algorithm to solve this problem, where Δ represents the maximum degree of the input graph. The certificates provided by our algorithm can be authenticated in O(n) time.  相似文献

A bipartite graph G=(A,B,E) is convex on B if there exists an ordering of the vertices of B such that for any vertex v??A, vertices adjacent to v are consecutive in?B. A complete bipartite subgraph of a graph G is called a biclique of G. Motivated by an application to analyzing DNA microarray data, we study the problem of finding maximum edge bicliques in convex bipartite graphs. Given a bipartite graph G=(A,B,E) which is convex on B, we present a new algorithm that computes a maximum edge biclique of G in O(nlog?3 nlog?log?n) time and O(n) space, where n=|A|. This improves the current O(n 2) time bound available for the problem. We also show that for two special subclasses of convex bipartite graphs, namely for biconvex graphs and bipartite permutation graphs, a maximum edge biclique can be computed in O(n??(n)) and O(n) time, respectively, where n=min?(|A|,|B|) and ??(n) is the slowly growing inverse of the Ackermann function.  相似文献

The Maximum Induced Matching (MIM) Problem asks for a largest set of pairwise vertex-disjoint edges in a graph which are pairwise of distance at least two. It is well-known that the MIM problem is NP-complete even on particular bipartite graphs and on line graphs. On the other hand, it is solvable in polynomial time for various classes of graphs (such as chordal, weakly chordal, interval, circular-arc graphs and others) since the MIM problem on graph G corresponds to the Maximum Independent Set problem on the square G *=L(G)2 of the line graph L(G) of G, and in some cases, G * is in the same graph class; for example, for chordal graphs G, G * is chordal. The construction of G *, however, requires time, where m is the number of edges in G. Is has been an open problem whether there is a linear-time algorithm for the MIM problem on chordal graphs. We give anO(log4 n)-timeO(n 2)-processor CRCW PRAM algorithm to find a hamiltonian cycle in a strong semicomplete bipartite digraph,B, provided that a factor ofB (i.e., a collection of vertex disjoint cycles covering the vertex set ofB) is computed in a preprocessing step. The factor is found (if it exists) using a bipartite matching algorithm, hence placing the whole algorithm in the class Random-NC. We show that any parallel algorithm which can check the existence of a hamiltonian cycle in a strong semicomplete bipartite digraph in timeO(r(n)) usingp(n) processors can be used to check the existence of a perfect matching in a bipartite graph in timeO(r(n)+n 2 /p(n)) usingp(n) processors. Hence, our problem belongs to the class NC if and only if perfect matching in bipartite graphs belongs to NC. We also consider the problem of finding a hamiltonian path in a semicomplete bipartite digraph.  相似文献

A graph is chordal if it contains no chordless cycles of length at least four and (q, t) if no set of at mostq vertices induces more thant paths of length three. It is known that the isomorphism problem is isomorphism complete for chordal graphs and for (6, 3) graphs. We present polynomial methods to determine the automorphism partition and to test isomorphism of graphs which are both chordal and (6, 3). The approach is based on the study of simplicial partitions of chordal graphs. It is proved that for chordal (6, 3) graphs the automorphism partition coincides with the coarsest regular simplicial partition. This yields anO(n+m logn) isomorphism test.  相似文献

The densest k-subgraph (DkS) problem asks for a k-vertex subgraph of a given graph with the maximum number of edges. The DkS problem is NP-hard even for special graph classes including bipartite, planar, comparability and chordal graphs, while no constant approximation algorithm is known for any of these classes. In this paper we present a 3-approximation algorithm for the class of chordal graphs. The analysis of our algorithm is based on a graph theoretic lemma of independent interest.  相似文献

Given a class C of graphs, a graph G=(V,E) is said to be a C-probe graph if there exists a stable (i.e., independent) set of vertices XV and a set F of pairs of vertices of X such that the graph G=(V,EF) is in the class C. Recently, there has been increasing interest and research on a variety of C-probe graph classes, such as interval probe graphs, chordal probe graphs and chain probe graphs.In this paper we focus on chordal-bipartite probe graphs. We prove a structural result that if B is a bipartite graph with no chordless cycle of length strictly greater than 6, then B is chordal-bipartite probe if and only if a certain “enhanced” graph B is a chordal-bipartite graph. This theorem is analogous to a result on interval probe graphs in Zhang (1994) [18] and to one on chordal probe graphs in Golumbic and Lipshteyn (2004) [11].  相似文献

Given a directed, non-negatively weighted graph G=(V,E) and s,tV, we consider two problems. In the k simple shortest paths problem, we want to find the k simple paths from s to t with the k smallest weights. In the replacement paths problem, we want the shortest path from s to t that avoids e, for every edge e in the original shortest path from s to t. The best known algorithm for the k simple shortest paths problem has a running of O(k(mn+n2logn)). For the replacement paths problem the best known result is the trivial one running in time O(mn+n2logn).In this paper we present two simple algorithms for the replacement paths problem and the k simple shortest paths problem in weighted directed graphs (using a solution of the All Pairs Shortest Paths problem). The running time of our algorithm for the replacement paths problem is O(mn+n2loglogn). For the k simple shortest paths we will perform O(k) iterations of the second simple shortest path (each in O(mn+n2loglogn) running time) using a useful property of Roditty and Zwick [L. Roditty, U. Zwick, Replacement paths and k simple shortest paths in unweighted directed graphs, in: Proc. of International Conference on Automata, Languages and Programming (ICALP), 2005, pp. 249-260]. These running times immediately improve the best known results for both problems over sparse graphs.Moreover, we prove that both the replacement paths and the k simple shortest paths (for constant k) problems are not harder than APSP (All Pairs Shortest Paths) in weighted directed graphs.  相似文献

A graph G is said to be a bicluster graph if G is a disjoint union of bicliques (complete bipartite subgraphs), and a cluster graph if G is a disjoint union of cliques (complete subgraphs). In this work, we study the parameterized versions of the NP-hard Bicluster Graph Editing and Cluster Graph Editing problems. The former consists of obtaining a bicluster graph by making the minimum number of modifications in the edge set of an input bipartite graph. When at most k modifications are allowed (Bicluster(k) Graph Editing problem), this problem is FPT, and can be solved in O(4 k nm) time by a standard search tree algorithm. We develop an algorithm of time complexity O(4 k +n+m), which uses a strategy based on modular decomposition techniques; we slightly generalize the original problem as the input graph is not necessarily bipartite. The algorithm first builds a problem kernel with O(k 2) vertices in O(n+m) time, and then applies a bounded search tree. We also show how this strategy based on modular decomposition leads to a new way of obtaining a problem kernel with O(k 2) vertices for the Cluster(k) Graph Editing problem, in O(n+m) time. This problem consists of obtaining a cluster graph by modifying at most k edges in an input graph. A previous FPT algorithm of time O(1.92 k +n 3) for this problem was presented by Gramm et al. (Theory Comput. Syst. 38(4), 373–392, 2005, Algorithmica 39(4), 321–347, 2004). In their solution, a problem kernel with O(k 2) vertices is built in O(n 3) time.  相似文献

Let G(VE) be a connected undirected graph with n vertices and m edges, where each vertex v is associated with a cost C(v) and each edge e = (uv) is associated with two weights, W(u → v) and W(v → u). The issue of assigning an orientation to each edge so that G becomes a directed graph is resolved in this paper. Determining a scheme to assign orientations of all edges such that maxxV{C(x)+∑xzW(xz)} is minimized is the objective. This issue is called the edge-orientation problem (the EOP). Two variants of the EOP, the Out-Degree-EOP and the Vertex-Weighted EOP, are first proposed and then efficient algorithms for solving them on general graphs are designed. Ascertaining that the EOP is NP-hard on bipartite graphs and chordal graphs is the second result. Finally, an O(n log n)-time algorithm for the EOP on trees is designed. In general, the algorithmic results in this paper facilitate the implementation of the weighted fair queuing (WFQ) on real networks. The objective of the WFQ is to assign an effective weight for each flow to enhance link utilization. Our findings consequently can be easily extended to other classes of graphs, such as cactus graphs, block graphs, and interval graphs.  相似文献

We present a randomized algorithm for finding maximum matchings in planar graphs in timeO(n ω/2), whereω is the exponent of the best known matrix multiplication algorithm. Sinceω<2.38, this algorithm breaks through theO(n 1.5) barrier for the matching problem. This is the first result of this kind for general planar graphs. We also present an algorithm for generating perfect matchings in planar graphs uniformly at random usingO(n ω/2) arithmetic operations. We present the first dynamic graph algorithm for recognizing interval graphs. The algorithm runs in O(nlog?n) worst-case time per edge deletion or edge insertion, where n is the number of vertices in the graph. The algorithm uses a new representation of interval graphs called the train tree, which is based on the clique-separator graph representation of chordal graphs. The train tree has a number of useful properties and it can be constructed from the clique-separator graph in O(n) time.  相似文献
