"An integrated model is proposed to capture economic and demographic interactions in a system of regions. This model links the interregional economic model of Isard (1960) and the interregional demographic model of Rogers (1975) via functions describing consumption and migration patterns. The urban system has been a prevailing research issue in the fields of urban geography and regional economics. Not only do the relationships between cities in the city system exist in the form of rankings, but also in a more general network form. Previous work has examined the spatial structure of the urban system in terms of its separate industrial networks, such as in transportation and economic activity, but little has been done to compare different networks. To rectify this situation, this study analyzes and reveals the spatial structural features of China's urban system by comparing its transportation and economic urban networks, thus providing new avenues for research on China's city network. The results indicate that these two networks relate with each other by sharing structural equivalence with a basic diamond structure and a layered intercity structure decreasing outwards from the national centers. A decoupling effect also exists between them as the transportation network contributes to a balanced regional development, while the economic network promotes agglomeration economies. The law of economic development and the government both play important roles in the articulation between these two networks, and the gap between them can be shortened by related policy reforms and the improvement of the transportation network.  相似文献

This research examined new ways of investigating the economic viability of prospective urban housing development. The paper reviews both the theory and the practice of assessing economic viability. The research sought to improve the economic viability aspects of urban capacity studies that identify land and buildings that are suitable for future residential development. The methodology adopted and applied in the research proposes that viability can be judged from indicative residual values for identified sites. The values are generated from secondary data informed by professional opinion. Estimates of all development costs, other than site acquisition costs, are deducted from anticipated revenue to provide the residual values. Positive indicative residual values, if they are large enough to cover site acquisition costs, suggest that sites are viable for residential development. Whilst developed for the purposes of informing urban capacity studies, the methodology has wider applications, including informing policy actions that are designed to enhance the viability of potential residential development sites.  相似文献

"Information flows in models of migration are emphasized. In particular, migrants are assumed to react to two types of information about job vacancies. 'Interaction information' may be defined as interpersonal communication between recent migrants and their former neighbors or friends, and 'source information' represents a direct flow of information from employers or agencies to individuals. Models are developed that investigate the effects of various communication rates and information retention levels on vacancy rates and labor-force population trajectories. It is found that attempts by planners to reduce regional inequities in vacancy rates through controlled advertising may be successful, but at the possible cost of increasing temporal fluctuations of regional vacancy rates."  相似文献

Local land use regulations have been adopted to restrict population growth and urban sprawl in an attempt to prevent future problems like congestion, pollution, and loss of open space. However, when regulations become widespread in a region, it can be difficult for young workers and newcomers to find appropriate housing in the region. Because local governments may neglect the effects of their policies on the rest of the region, the resulting population size can be inefficient. We show that local adoption of housing regulations tends to over-restrict population growth when there are strong agglomeration economies in the regional production. On the other hand, when there is congestion in production, coordination among jurisdictions is undesirable if business interests are neglected.  相似文献

Demand response (DR) from end-users is widely investigated as a power-system flexibility resource in a European smart-grid environment. Limited knowledge exists on the added value such flexibility can bring to actors in the electricity value chain. This work investigates the economic effect of consumption flexibility under current regulatory remuneration on distribution-system operators with a Swedish case study. Results indicate DR leads to savings for the distribution-system operator, which might be used towards smart-grid investments. Peak demand is and will continue to be a main driver for grid costs and therefore should be a focal point in tariff design.  相似文献

Agglomeration and income inequality at country level can be both understood as concentration of physical and human capital in the process of economic development. As such, it seems pertinent to analyse their impact on economic growth considering both phenomena together. By estimating a dynamic panel specification at country level, this paper analyses how agglomeration and inequality (both their levels and their evolution) influence long-run economic growth. In line with previous findings, our results suggest that while high-inequality levels are a limiting factor for long-run growth, agglomeration processes can be associated with economic growth, at least in countries at early stages of development. Moreover, we find that the growth-enhancing benefits from agglomeration processes depend not only on the country’s level of development, but also on its initial income distribution (something, to the best of our knowledge, not considered before). In fact, probably suggesting a social dimension to congestion diseconomies, increasing agglomeration is associated with lower growth when income distribution is particularly unequal.  相似文献

This study applies an economic input-output life cycle assessment (EIO-LCA) approach for 180 industrial sectors of the Thai economy. The approach is used to evaluate energy consumption and CO2 emissions of the agricultural sector for the entire supply chain and particularly focusing on transportation. Transportation emits the second largest amount of CO2 by sector in Thailand. Road transportation is the dominant form of cargo transport, accounting for 80% of all modes. The results show that transportation emissions from all modes of cargo transport account for 1–6% of total supply chain emissions. The vegetable sector shares highest CO2 emissions in transportation. By changing the transportation mode from road freight to rail, emissions could be expected to decline. If 50% of road transportation was shifted to rail, CO2 emissions would drop by 30%.  相似文献
