Benzenesulfonate‐doped poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT‐Bzs)/graphene thermoelectric (TE) composites with various graphene filler contents were synthesized in five different kinds of solvents. Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) was used to achieve good dispersion of graphene into the PEDOT matrix. Among the synthesized PEDOT materials, the one synthesized in methanol (PEDOT‐MeOH) had the highest electrical conductivity. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed almost the same charge carrier concentration for all PEDOT materials. However, the X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis highlighted the enhancement of PEDOT chain stacking by shorter‐chain alcoholic solvents, as a result of which the carrier mobility and electrical conductivity were increased. The electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient of the PEDOT/graphene composites were significantly improved with increasing the graphene content, which strongly depended on increased carrier mobility. The thermal conductivity of the composites exhibited relatively small changes, attributed to phonon scattering effects. The maximum TE efficiency of the PEDOT‐MeOH/graphene composite with 75 wt % graphene showed a substantially improved value of 1.9 × 10?2, higher than that of the other PEDOT/graphene composites. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, nanocomposites of polycarbonate/acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (PC/ABS) with various loads of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are investigated. Material is previously formed by masterbatch dilution approach and further processed by injection molding at various velocities. Microscopic characterization of nanocomposites morphology reveals stronger dependence of MWCNT dispersion on processing parameters at higher nanofiller load. Dispersion of carbon nanotubes at various distances from the injection gate is studied by Raman spectroscopy showing lower deviation at elevated injection velocity. Nanoindentation results that are in agreement with uniaxial tensile testing show a slight decrease of nanocomposites' mechanical performance at 3.0 wt % MWCNT in samples injected at reduced velocity. This is explained by the increase of agglomeration behavior at these conditions. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 42014.  相似文献

The mechanical and fracture properties of vinyl‐ester composites reinforced with halloysite nanotubes have been investigated. Enhancements in toughness are attributed to crack bridging, deflection, and localized plastic deformation, while strength improvements can be attributed to the large aspect ratio of fillers, favorable interfacial adhesion and dispersion, and inter‐tubular interaction. Comparisons of experimental data on elastic modulus and mathematical models for predicting particulate polymer composites have verified the models of Paul and Guth. The aspect ratio of fillers and the degree of interfacial adhesion are crucial factors in the prediction of elastic modulus in these polymer nanocomposites. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. A series of graphene nanosheets‐filled poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites (GNS/PMMA) is successfully prepared by an in situ fast polymerization method with graphene weight fractions from 0.1 to 2.0 wt %. In situ polymerization is effective in well dispersing of GNS in matrixes and suitable for both low and high content of GNS. The synthesis processes of polymer composites could be simplified and fast by using industrial grade graphene. The GNS fillers are found to disperse homogeneously in the PMMA matrix. The maximum electrical conductivity of the composites achieves 0.57 S m?1, with an extremely low percolation threshold of 0.3 wt %. The electrical conductivities are further predicted by percolation theory and found to agree well with the experimental results. The results indicate that the microstructures, thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of PMMA polymer are significantly improved by adding a low amount of graphene nanosheets. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) functionalized by m‐xylylenediamine is used as thermal conductive fillers to improve their dispersibility in epoxy resin and the thermal conductivity of the MWNTs/bisphenol‐A glycidol ether epoxy resin composites. Functionalization with amine groups of MWNTs is achieved after such steps as carboxylation, acylation and amidation. The thermal conductivity, impact strength, flexural strength, and fracture surfaces of MWNTs/epoxy composites are investigated with different MWNTs. The results show that m‐xylylenediamine is successfully grafted onto the surface of the MWNTs and the mass fraction of the organic molecules grafted onto MWNTs is about 20 wt %. The thermal conductivity of MWNTs/epoxy composites is further enhanced to 1.236 W/mK with 2 wt % m‐MWNTs. When the content of m‐MWNTs is 1.5 wt %, the impact strength and flexural strength of the composites are 25.85 KJ/m2, 128.1 MPa, respectively. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results show that the fracture pattern of composites is changed from brittle fracture to ductile fracture. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. This article describes the crystallization process of polypropylene random copolymer (PPCP) under isothermal conditions in presence of varying amounts of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) ranging from 0.5 to 4.0% w/w. Increase in the crystallization temperature under dynamic conditions confirmed the nucleating behavior of MWCNTs, which was also corroborated by crystallization studies under isothermal conditions. The crystallization kinetics was analyzed using Avrami equation and the parameters such as Avrami exponent, the equilibrium melting temperature and fold surface energy for the crystallization of PPCP chains in nanocomposites were obtained from the calorimetric data in order to determine the effect of MWCNTs on these parameters. Spherulitic growth of PPCP crystals was also investigated as a function of time and MWCNT content using hot stage polarizing microscope. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this study, the effects of multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and its hybrids with iron oxide (Fe2O3) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles on mechanical characteristics and thermal properties of epoxy binder was evaluated. Furthermore, simultaneous effects of using MWCNT with TiO2 as pigment and CaCO3 as filler for epoxy composites were determined. To investigate effects of nano‐ and micro‐particles on epoxy matrix, the samples were evaluated by TGA and DTA. It was found that the hybrid of MWCNT with nano metal oxides caused considerable increment in the tensile and flexural properties of epoxy samples in comparison to the single MWCNT containing samples at the same filler contents. Significant improvement in the thermal conductivity of epoxy samples was obtained by using TiO2 pigment along with MWCNT. The TiO2 pigment also caused considerable improvement in mechanical properties of the epoxy matrix and the MWCNT containing nanocomposite. The best mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy nanocomposites were obtained at 1.5 wt % of MWCNT and 7 wt % of TiO2 that it should be attributed to particle network forming of the particles which cause better nano/micro dispersion and properties. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) have excellent thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties. The incorporation of GNPs into a polymer can remarkably enhance the thermal and mechanical properties of the polymer especially when GNPs are well dispersed in the polymer matrix with strong interfacial bonding. Therefore, in this study, GNPs were amine‐functionalized by covalently bonding 4,4′‐methylene dianiline onto their surfaces via a facile synthetic route. The amine‐functionalization was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy and TGA. Epoxy/GNPs nanocomposites were prepared and their curing behavior, thermomechanical properties and impact strength were investigated. The amine‐functionalization increased curing rate, storage modulus, thermal dimensional stability, and impact strength of the nanocomposites. The SEM images for the fracture surface of the nanocomposite with amine‐functionalized GNPs showed a smooth and ductile failure‐like surface, resulted from the improved interfacial bonding between GNPs and the epoxy matrix. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel bio‐based polyurethane/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized from biorenewable epoxidized soybean‐castor oil fatty acid‐based polyols with considerable improvement in mechanical and thermal properties. The GO was synthesized via a modified pressurized oxidation method, and was investigated using Raman spectra, AFM and XPS, respectively. The toughening mechanism of GO in the bio‐based polyurethane matrix was explored. The elongation at break and toughness of polyurethane were increased by 1.3 and 0.8 times with incorporation of 0.4 wt % GO, respectively. However, insignificant changes in both mechanical strength and modulus were observed by adding GO. The results from thermal analysis indicated that the GO acts as new secondary soft segments in the polyurethane which lead to a considerable decrease in the glass transition temperature and crosslink density. The SEM morphology of the fracture surface after tensile testing showed a considerable aggregation of graphene oxide at concentrations above 0.4 wt %. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The effects of selected factors such as vapor‐grown carbon nanofiber (VGCNF) weight fraction, applied stress, and temperature on the viscoelastic responses (creep strain and creep compliance) of VGCNF/vinyl ester (VE) nanocomposites were studied using a central composite design (CCD). Nanocomposite test articles were fabricated by high‐shear mixing, casting, curing, and post curing in an open‐face mold under a nitrogen environment. Short‐term creep/creep recovery experiments were conducted at prescribed combinations of temperature (23.8–69.2°C), applied stress (30.2–49.8 MPa), and VGCNF weight fraction (0.00–1.00 parts of VGCNF per hundred parts of resin) determined from the CCD. Response surface models (RSMs) for predicting these viscoelastic responses were developed using the least squares method and an analysis of variance procedure. The response surface estimates indicate that increasing the VGCNF weight fraction marginally increases the creep resistance of the VGCNF/VE nanocomposite at low temperatures (i.e., 23.8–46.5°C). However, increasing the VGCNF weight fraction decreased the creep resistance of these nanocomposites for temperatures greater than 50°C. The latter response may be due to a decrease in the nanofiber‐to‐matrix adhesion as the temperature is increased. The RSMs for creep strain and creep compliance revealed the interactions between the VGCNF weight fraction, stress, and temperature on the creep behavior of thermoset polymer nanocomposites. The design of experiments approach is useful in revealing interactions between selected factors, and thus can facilitate the development of more physics‐based models. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, the influence of tungsten disulfide nanotubes (INT‐WS2) on the mechanical, thermal, structural, and morphological characteristics of Polypropylene‐graft‐maleic anhydride (PPGMA) nanocomposites is investigated. The addition of 5% INT‐WS2 increases the Young's Modulus by 28.5% and the storage modulus by 196.5% (in the rubbery state). Furthermore, the nanocomposites' thermal stability increases (up to 10 °C) with the addition of INT‐WS2. Transmission electron microscopy observations of the nanocomposites revealed that nanotubes' length is significantly reduced during processing and that nanotubes are well‐dispersed inside the PPGMA matrix. DSC results indicated that INT‐WS2 serve as nucleating agents in PPGMA. Moreover, AFM observations (coupled with DSC results) suggested the formation of fibrillar crystallites in the nanocomposites. This interfacial crystalline structure seems to interpose between the PPGMA and INT‐WS2. Thus, it plays a crucial role in the load transfer from the amorphous part of the polymer to the rather stiff INT‐WS2. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133, 43887.  相似文献

In this work, multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) pellets were compounded via corotating twin‐screw extruder. The produced MWCNT/PMMA nanocomposite pellets were injection molded. The effect of MWCNT concentration, injection melt temperature and holding pressure on mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. To examine the mechanical properties of the MWCNT/PMMA nanocomposites, tensile test, charpy impact test, and Rockwell hardness are considered as the outputs. Design of experiments (DoE) is done by full factorial method. The morphology of the nanocomposites was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results revealed when MWCNT concentration are increased from 0 to 1.5 wt %, tensile strength and elongation at break were reduced about 30 and 40%, respectively, but a slight increase in hardness was observed. In addition, highest impact strength belongs to the nanocomposite with 1 wt % MWCNT. This study also shows that processing condition significantly influence on mechanical behavior of the injection molded nanocomposite. In maximum holding pressure (100 bar), the nanocomposites show highest tensile strength, elongation, impact strength and hardness. According to findings, melt temperature has a trifle effect on elongation, but it has a remarkable influence on tensile strength. In the case of impact strength, higher melt temperature is favorable. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133, 43738.  相似文献

The preparation of high‐dielectric poly(styrene‐b‐(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐b‐styrene) (SEBS) composites containing functionalized single‐walled carbon nanotubes (f‐SWCNTs) noncovalently appended with dibutyltindilaurate are reported herein. Transmission electron microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the noncovalent functionalization of the SWCNTs. The SEBS‐f‐SWCNT composites exhibited enhanced mechanical properties as well as a stable and high dielectric constant of approximately 1000 at 1 Hz with rather low dielectric loss at 2 wt% filler content. The significantly enhanced dielectric property originates from the noncovalent functionalization of the SWCNTs that ensures good dispersion of the f‐SWCNTs in the polymer matrix. The f‐SWCNTs also acted as a reinforcing filler, thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of the composites. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

This article is focused to elucidate the critical influence of diffusion temperature on the water uptake and subsequent degradation behavior of multi‐walled carbon nanotube embedded glass fiber/epoxy (MWCNT‐GE) composite. Presence of MWCNT in the glass fiber/epoxy (GE) composite significantly suppressed its water absorption propensity at lower aging temperature (25 °C). However, MWCNT reinforcement in GE composite adversely affected its high temperature water resistance due to generation of unfavorable thermal and hygroscopic stresses at the MWCNT/polymer interfaces. Effect of MWCNT and water diffusion temperature on the glass transition temperature and chemical bonding characteristics of GE composite have been verified by differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. Flexural testing of the water saturated samples revealed that diffused water exerts more detrimental effect on mechanical performance of MWCNT‐GE composite than that of control GE composite. The extent of recovery in mechanical performance of the composites has also been evaluated after complete desorption of the water saturated samples. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this article, the effect of Multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of polycarbonate (PC) toughened with cross‐linked ethylene‐propylene copolymer (EPC) was investigated. The solubility parameters of the PC and EPC were calculated using Hoy methods to clarify the miscibility of the polymer blends. It could be concluded that in the cooled state, the blends form a heterogeneous structure with two separate phases. The tensile, flexural, impact toughness properties of the PC/EPC blend and PC/EPC/MWCNT nanocomposites were carried out to illuminate the optimum concentration of polymer blends and MWCNTs. The 335% increment for the impact strength results appeared with combination of 10% EPC in the PC matrix. The flexural modulus and strength of PC/EPC blend increased by 75.1% and 59.1%, respectively. The Nielsen model was performed to fit the best curve of theoretical simulation to experimental results for elastomeric dispersed in the plastic matrix. Halpin‐Tsai model was applied to estimate the stiffness of nanocomposites blends with different volume fraction and aspect ratio of MWCNTs in the PC/EPC blends. Finally, in the presence of MWCNTs, all nanocomposite samples were semi‐conducting and the percolation threshold of the PC/EPC (10%) blends was between 0.5% and 1.0% MWCNTs. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Woven glass‐fiber‐reinforced cyanate ester/epoxy composites modified with plasma‐functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared. The mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of the composites were investigated at different temperatures. The results show that the interlaminar shear strength, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity of the composites at room temperature and the cryogenic temperatures were enhanced simultaneously by the incorporation of MWCNTs, whereas the nonconductive behavior of the composites as electrical insulating materials was not changed. Meanwhile, the reinforcing mechanism was also examined on the basis of the microstructure of the composites. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 41418.  相似文献

The effect of dispersion processes on complex permittivity and microwave absorption in 2?18 GHz ranges is presented for nanocomposites loaded with different amounts of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) ranging from 1 to 5 wt %. The ultrasonic sonication (US) method and the three‐roll mill (TRM) method were performed for the manufacturing of the CNT/epoxy absorbers with different dispersing levels. Microscopic observations revealed that the CNT agglomerates were reduced after the TRM process, and individual CNTs were uniformly dispersed in the epoxy resin. For the same weight content of CNT fillers, the percentage increase of between US and TRM samples varies from 35.5% to 101.7% while the corresponding increment of (dielectric loss) varies from 79.6% to 248.8%. A minimum reflection loss for the US sample with 2 wt % CNTs is only ?7.8 dB at 11.3 GHz while the corresponding TRM sample is greatly improved to reach ?37.4 dB at 7.76 GHz for the same matching thickness of 3 mm. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A chemical sensor for methyl viologen (MV2+), based on a water‐soluble conjugated polymer/single‐walled carbon‐nanotube (SWNT) composite, was fabricated. Water‐soluble poly(m‐phenylene ethynylene) with sulfonic acid side‐chain groups (mPPE‐SO3) was synthesized via a Pd‐catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reaction and used to prepare a highly stable mPPE‐SO3/SWNT composite with strong π–π interactions in water. The relationship between the optical properties and sensing capability of the mPPE‐SO3/SWNT composite in aqueous solution was investigated. The addition of MV2+ enhanced the fluorescence intensity of the mPPE‐SO3/SWNT composite by inducing a conformational change of the polymer from a helical to a random‐coil structure. The water‐soluble mPPE‐SO3/SWNT composite enabled highly sensitive fluorescence detection of MV2+ in aqueous solutions with no precipitation resulting from reaggregation of the SWNTs. This mPPE‐SO3/SWNT composite sensor system is therefore an effective turn‐on chemical sensor for MV2+. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133, 43301.  相似文献

Poly(?‐caprolactone)diol (PCL)–functionalized nanodiamonds (f‐NDs) were synthesized using a click chemistry reaction between the azide‐moiety PCL and alkyne‐moiety NDs and were incorporated into shape memory polyurethane (PU) at f‐ND concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 wt % to produce high‐performance shape memory nanocomposites. The PU/f‐ND nanocomposites exhibited better shape recovery, shape recovery stress, and breaking stresses than pure PU. Shape recovery of greater than 95% was demonstrated for all the nanocomposites in the third cycle, and the shape recovery stresses increased significantly with the f‐ND content. These enhanced mechanical and shape recovery properties are ascribed to increased interactions between the f‐NDs and PU matrix due to incorporation of click‐coupled f‐NDs. The click‐coupled NDs can be used as nanofillers to enhance the mechanical and shape memory properties of polymers. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134 , 45465.  相似文献

A three‐step grafting procedure has been used to graft the epoxy monomers (DER332) and the curing agents (diamino diphenyl methane (DDM), onto graphene oxide (GO) surface. The surface modification of GO has been performed by grafting of Jeffamine D‐2000, followed with subsequent grafting of DER332 and DDM, respectively. Fourier transform spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis indicate successful surface modification. The resulting modified GO, that is, (DED)‐GO, can be well dispersed in the epoxy monomers. The epoxy nanocomposites containing different GO contents can then be prepared through curing processes. The dispersion of GO in the nanocomposites is characterized by transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the tensile strength and elongation at break of epoxy nanocomposite with only 0.2 wt % DED‐GO are increased by 30 and 16% as compared with the neat epoxy resin, respectively. Dynamic mechanical analysis results show that 62% increase in storage modulus and 26°C enhancement in the glass transition temperature of the nanocomposite have been achieved with the incorporation of only 0.2 wt % of DED‐GO into the epoxy. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
