A charged surface modifying macromolecule (cSMM) was synthesized, characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and blended into the casting solution of cellulose acetate (CA) to prepare surface modified UF membranes by phase inversion technique. With an increasing cSMM additive content from 1 to 4 wt%, pure water flux (PWF) and water content (WC) were increases whereas the hydraulic resistance decreases. Surface characteristic study reveals that the surface hydrophilicity increased in cSMM modified CA membranes. The pore size and surface porosity of the 4 wt% cSMM blend CA membranes increases to 41.26 Å and 0.015%, respectively. Similarly, the molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of the membranes ranged from 20 to 45 kDa, depending on the various compositions of the prepared membranes. Lower flux decline rate (47.2%) and higher flux recovery ratio (FRR) (89.0%), exhibited by 4 wt% cSMM blend membranes demonstrated its fouling resistant characteristic compared to pristine CA membrane.  相似文献

It is easy to adsorb the pollutants from water owning to the hydrophobicity of the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane. To improve the hydrophilicity of the PVDF UF membrane, a novel amphiphilic copolymer PVDF-g-poly-N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)methacrylamide] (PDMAPMA) was developed. The amphiphilic PVDF-g-PDMAPMA was synthesized with PVDF and N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)methacrylamide (DMAPMA) via free-radical polymerization, and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance. The scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to characterize the structure morphologies and elementals of the blend PVDF membranes, respectively. The pure water flux (PWF), molecular weight cutoff, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution filtration experiments were tested to evaluate the permeation performance and antifouling properties of the membranes. The experimental results showed that the PWF was 263.1 L m−2 h−1, BSA rejection rate was 98.1% and flux recovery rate was 95.1% of the prepared blend membrane which had obvious improvement compared with the pristine PVDF membrane (17.3 L m−2 h−1, 91.0, and 83.8%, respectively). The antibacterial activity test showed the prepared blend membrane had good potency against microorganisms. A novel hydrophilic PVDF membrane with good antibacterial properties was developed and would be promising for wastewater treatment. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Asymmetric ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were prepared by the blending of poly(ether sulfone) (PES) and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) polymers with N,N′‐dimethylformamide solvent by the phase‐inversion method. SPEEK was selected as the hydrophilic polymer in a blend with different composition of PES and SPEEK. The solution‐cast PES/SPEEK blend membranes were homogeneous for all of the studied compositions from 100/0 to 60/40 wt % in a total of 17.5 wt % polymer and 82.5 wt % solvent. The presence of SPEEK beyond 40 wt % in the casting solution did not form membranes. The prepared membranes were characterized for their UF performances, such as pure water flux, water content, porosity, and membrane hydraulic resistance, and morphology and melting temperature. We estimated that the pure water flux of the PES/SPEEK blend membranes increased from 17.3 to 85.6 L m?2 h?1 when the concentration of SPEEK increased from 0 to 40 wt % in the casting solution. The membranes were also characterized their separation performance with proteins and metal‐ion solutions. The results indicate significant improvement in the performance characteristics of the blend membranes with the addition of SPEEK. In particular, the rejection of proteins and metal ions was marginally decreased, whereas the permeate flux was radically improved. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

The structure and performance of modified poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF‐co‐HFP) ultra‐filtration membranes prepared from casting solutions with different concentrations of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) were investigated in this study. Membrane properties were studied in terms of membrane compaction, pure water flux (PWF), water content (WC), membrane hydraulic resistance ( R m), protein rejection, molecular weight cut‐off (MWCO), average pore size, and porosity. PWF, WC, and thermal stability of the blend membranes increased whereas the crystalline nature and mechanical strength of the blend membranes decreased when PVP additive concentration was increased. The contact angle (CA) decreased as the PVP concentration increased in the casting solution, which indicates that the hydro‐philicity of the surface increased upon addition of PVP. The average pore size and porosity of the PVdF‐co‐HFP membrane increased to 42.82 Å and 25.12%, respectively, when 7.5 wt% PVP was blended in the casting solution. The MWCO increased from 20 to 45 kDa with an increase in PVP concentration from 0 to 7.5 wt%. The protein separation study revealed that the rejection increased as the protein molecular weight increased. The PVdF‐co‐HFP/PVP blended membrane prepared from a 7.5 wt% PVP solution had a maximum flux recovery ratio of 74.3%, which explains its better antifouling properties as compared to the neat PVdF‐co‐HFP membrane. Membrane fouling problem is now limiting the rapid development of membrane technology. A newly synthesized cationic polyionic liquid (PIL) [P(PEGMA-co-BVIm-Br)] was blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to prepare antifouling PVDF membranes. The PVDF/P(PEGMA-co-BVIm-Br) exhibited an increased surface hydrophilicity, the water contact angle was reduced from 77.8° (pristine PVDF) to 57.9°. More porous membrane structure was obtained by adding PIL into the blending polymers, as high as 478.0 L/m2·h of pure water flux was detected for the blend PVDF membrane in comparison with pristine PVDF (17.2 L/m2·h). Blending of the cationic PIL with PVDF gave a more positive surface charge than pristine PVDF membrane. Blend membranes showed very high rejection rate (99.1%) and flux recovery rate (FRR, 83.0%) to the positive bovine serum albumin (BSA), due to the electrostatic repulsion between the membrane surface and proteins. After three repeated filtration cycles of positive BSA, the blend PVDF membranes demonstrated excellent antifouling performance, the permeation flux of the membranes was recovered very well after a simple deionized water washing, and as high as 70% of FRR was obtained, the water flux was maintained at above 350 L/m2·h. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A small molecular-weight cut-off (MWCO) of 6000 Da poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) embedded zinc oxide (ZnO) hybrid ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was synthesized via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS). Tests of field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), capillary flow porometer (CPF), mechanical test, and pure water flux (PWF) for characterization of membranes were carried out. The EDX, FTIR, and TGA indicated the presence of ZnO in the polymer matrix. The hybrid membranes showed enhanced pore density, PWF by the presence of the particles. The contact angle and water flux of modified membrane with 0.03 wt % of nano-ZnO were 47.7° and 52.58 L·m−2·h−1 compared to 71.6° and 36.27 L·m−2·h−1 respectively; Compared with the hydrophobic membrane, the PMIA membrane, with hydrophilicity, is supposed to exhibit good antifouling properties. Furthermore, the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the modified membranes were increased. Finally, the hybrid membrane was used in treating papermaking white wastewater and exhibited good separation and high water flux. The great properties of the ultrafiltration PMIA membranes indicate their potential for excellent performance in industrial applications. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) flat ultrafiltration membranes were successfully prepared by immersion precipitation phase inversion method. N‐Methyl pyrrolidone was used as a solvent, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as a polymeric additive in the casting solution. The effects of casting solution formulation and preparation conditions on membrane structure and properties were investigated in present study, and the morphology of the membranes was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the performances of SPSF membranes made by chemical modification were better than polysulfone membrane. The SPSF concentration played a vital role in restricting the pure water flux (PWF), promoting the rejection coefficient, and improving the hydrophilicity. A maximum PWF and minimum egg albumin rejection coefficient were obtained when the PVP content was 10%. When the coagulation bath temperature was set to 25°C, the PWF reached 480 L·m?2·h?1 and the ovalbumin rejection coefficient reached 92%. Longer evaporation times improved the PWF. Specifically, when the evaporation time was 70 s, the comprehensive performance was good. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 55:1003–1011, 2015. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

In this study, tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)-functionalized Na-bentonite incorporated into polysulfone/polyethylenimine (PSF/PEI) membranes were fabricated by phase inversion method for the efficient removal of methylene blue dye. For the preparation of PSF/PEI nanocomposite membranes, silane-functionalized Na-bentonite and pure Na-bentonite were used at three different concentrations (0.5, 1, and 2 wt%). The prepared membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, porosity, hydrophilicity, and water permeability measurements. Antifouling behaviors and methylene blue dye rejections of the PSF/PEI nanocomposite membranes were also tested. The obtained results showed that the addition of pure Na-bentonite and silane-functionalized Na-bentonite both increased the water permeability of the membranes. The PSF/PEI membrane containing 2 wt% silane-functionalized Na-bentonite showed the highest water flux of 105 L m−2 h−1, while the lowest water flux of 1.2 L m−2 h−1 was recorded for pure PSF membrane. Filtration results demonstrated that the antifouling capacity was significantly increased due to the negatively charged surface of the newly generated silane-functionalized Na-bentonite PSF/PEI membranes. In summary, TEOS-functionalized Na-bentonite can be used to fabricate PSF/PEI nanocomposite membranes with effective filtration ability, antifouling capacity with lower decay ratio, higher flux recovery ratio, and 99% methylene blue dye removal performance.  相似文献

A hydrophilic compound, taurine, was investigated as an additive in the interfacial polymerization between piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) to prepare thin‐film composite (TFC) membranes. The resulting membranes were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The morphology and hydrophilicity of the membranes were investigated through scanning electronic microscopy and water contact angle measurements. The separation performance of the TFC membranes was investigated through water flux and salt rejection tests. The protein‐fouling resistance of the films was evaluated by water recovery rate measurements after the treatment of bovine serum albumin. The membrane containing 0.2 wt % taurine showed the best performance of 92% MgSO4 rejection at a flux of 31 L m?2 h?1 and better antifouling properties than the PIP–TMC membranes. An appropriately low concentration of taurine showed the same MgSO4 rejection as the PIP–TMC membranes but a better fouling resistance performance. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. ABA‐type amphiphilic triblock copolymers (TBCs) were synthesized by a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process with a telechelic polystyrene macro‐RAFT agent and 4‐[n‐(acryloyloxy)alkyloxy]benzoic acid monomers. Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were fabricated by a phase‐inversion process with blends of the TBC, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) in dimethylformamide. The UF‐fabricated membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, water contact angle measurement, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. Pure water permeation, molecular weight cutoff values obtained by the permeation of different molecular weight polymers as probe solutes, bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution permeate flux, and oil–water emulsion filtration tests were used to evaluate the separation characteristics of the fabricated membranes. The tripolymer blend membranes exhibited a higher flux recovery ratio (FRR) after the membrane was washed with sodium lauryl sulfate (0.05 wt %) solution for a BSA solution (FRR = 88%) and oil–water emulsion (FRR = 95%) feeds when than the PVDF–PVP blend membrane (57 and 80% FRR values for the BSA solution and oil–water emulsion, respectively). The pendant carboxylic acid functional moieties in this ABA‐type TBC have potential advantages in the fabrication of high‐performance membranes. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with highly hydrophilic properties as membrane material and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as an additive, we prepared PVA/tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with good antifouling properties by a sol–gel method. The PVA/TEOS UF membranes were characterized by X‐ray diffraction patterns, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and static contact angle of measurement of water. The hybridization of TEOS to PVA for preparing the PVA/TEOS UF membranes achieved the required permeation performance and good antifouling behaviors. The morphology and permeation performance of the PVA/TEOS membranes varied with the different TEOS loadings and PEG contents. The pure water fluxes (JW) increased and the rejections (Rs) decreased with increasing TEOS loading and PEG content. The PVA/TEOS UF membrane with a PVA/TEOS/PEG/H2O composition mass ratio of 10/3/4/83 in the dope solution had a JW of 66.5 L m?2 h?1 and an R of 60.3% when we filtered it with 300 ppm of bovine serum albumin aqueous solution at an operational pressure difference of 0.1 MPa. In addition, the filtration and backwashing experiment proved that the PVA/TEOS membranes possessed good long‐term antifouling abilities. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were used as a sustainable additive to improve the hydrophilicity, permeability, antifouling, and mechanical properties of blend membranes. Different CNC loadings (0–1.2 wt %) in cellulose acetate (CA) membranes were studied. The blend membranes were prepared by a phase‐inversion process, and their chemical structure and morphological properties were characterized by attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, porosity, and mean pore size and contact angle measurement. The blend membranes became more porous and more interconnected after the addition of CNCs. The thickness of the top layer decreased and a few large holes in the porous substrate appeared with increasing CNC loading. In comparison with the pure CA membranes, the pure water flux of the blend membranes increased with increasing CNC loading. It reaches a maximum value of 76 L m?2 h?1 when the CNC loading was 0.5 wt %. The antifouling properties of the CA membrane were significantly improved after the addition of CNCs, and the flux recovery ratio value increased to 68% with the addition of 0.5 wt % CNCs. In comparison with that of the pure CA membranes, the tensile strength of the composite membranes increased by 47%. This study demonstrated the importance of using sustainable CNCs to achieve great improvements in the physical and chemical performance of CA ultrafiltration membranes and provided an efficient method for preparing high‐performance membranes. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thin‐film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes were fabricated via the codeposition of catechol (CCh) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) followed by subsequent interfacial polymerization with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on the surface of polysulfone ultrafiltration substrates. The detailed structures and surface properties were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ζ potential analysis, and water contact angle measurement. The surface properties, including the roughness, hydrophilicity, surface potential, and NF performances, were facilely tuned through variation of the codeposition time of CCh–PEI for the prepared TFC membranes. The optimized membrane achieved a high rejection (ca. 93%) of MgCl2 with a flux of around 31 L m?2 h?1 under 0.7 MPa. The results also reveal that the codeposition process endowed the final membranes with much better structural stability in alcohol and improved chlorine resistance compared to commonly interfacial polymerized ones with PEI and TMC. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present study aims to employ experimental design and statistical analysis in order to investigate in detail the effect of various prominent parameters on the characteristics and performance of polyacrylonitrile nanofiltration membranes for the treatment of electroplating wastewaters targeting Ni, Cr, and Zn ions. Incorporation of TiO2 into the membrane matrix was effective in improving pure water flux (PWF) by ~16%. Also, PWF and Ni rejection of membranes escalated to 118.55 L m−2 h−1 and 90.79%, respectively upon addition of 1.5 wt% citric acid to the dope. Variation in coagulation bath temperature from 25°C to 45°C led to the formation of membranes having higher porosity with enhanced PWF by about 25% at the expense of only 5% reduction in Ni rejection. Parameters were optimized by analysis of variance (ANOVA). In contrast to the effect of feed concentration, an increase in feed pressure and pH enhanced permeate flux and total ion rejection. Similarly, permeate flux increased at higher operational temperatures without change in total rejection. A mathematical model was developed by applying ANOVA and the best combination of operating parameters was obtained by optimization.  相似文献

Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were prepared from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) as main polymer, poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as additive, and 1‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent using Design Expert software for designing the experiments. The membranes were characterized by SEM, contact angle measurement, and atomic force microscopy. The performance of UF membranes was evaluated by pure water flux (PWF) and blue indigo dye particle rejection. In addition, the molecular weight cutoff of UF membranes was determined by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) rejection. The UF membranes were used as substrates for fabrication of polyamide thin film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. The results showed that the model had high reliability for prediction of PWF of UF membranes. Also, increment in PVC concentration caused reduction of PWF. Moreover, at constant PVC concentration and if the concentrations of PVC was lower than 10 wt %, the PWF reduced by increasing the concentration of PVP. However, at PVC concentration higher than 11 wt %, increment in PVP concentration showed increment and reduction of PWF. The PEG rejection results showed that the prepared membranes had UF membranes properties. Finally, the NaCl rejection tests of RO membranes by PVC as substrates indicated that the performance of RO membranes were lower than commercial membranes. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Thin-film composite nanofiltration membranes were prepared by interfacial polymerization reaction of piperazine and trimesoylchloride on virgin and nanoparticles (SiO2/TiO2) modified Polyacrylonitrile/70:30 and 30:70 Polyacrylonitrile – Polyvinylidenefluoride blend ultrafiltration substrates. The membranes were characterized for surface hydrophilicity and potential, surface and cross-sectional morphology and equilibrium water content. Pure water permeability and differential rejection of multi (MgSO4) and monovalent salts (NaCl) of the membranes were studied. Nanofiltration (NF) membranes prepared on nanoparticle modified UF substrates exhibit higher flux than the membranes prepared on virgin UF substrates. NF membranes prepared on TiO2 modified substrates are exhibiting higher flux than the other membranes. Membrane prepared on TiO2 modified 70:30 blend substrate exhibits the highest rejection ratio (4.63) of divalent to monovalent salts. Nanofiltration membranes prepared on nanoparticle modified substrates are displaying comparatively higher flux recovery ratio (FRR) and lower total fouling ratio (TFR) values than the NF membranes prepared on virgin ultrafiltration substrates.  相似文献

Abstract

In this work, polyethersulfone (PES) asymmetric nanofiltration (NF) membranes were prepared by immersion precipitation phase inversion process. The casting solution contained N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent, 1-propanol and 2-propanol as nonsolvent additives, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as pore former additive. Water was used as a coagulant. The effects of the PVP content in the casting solution and the exposed time on the performances of the NF membranes were investigated. It was found that with the increase of PVP content, the pure water flux (PWF) increased to the largest value and then decreased. The rejection to PEG 1000 always decreased. The largest value (1281.40 kg · m?2 · h?1 · MPa?1) of PWF appeared when the content of 1-propanol was 9 wt.%. However, when 2-propanol was added in the casting solution, the largest value of PWF was only 678.37 kg · m?2 · h?1 · MPa?1 (the content of 2-propanol was 7 wt.% and other preparing conditions were unchanged). The results meant that both PWF and rejection of the membranes with 1-propanol as additive were higher than that of 2-propanol as additive. The possible reason was discussed from the viewpoint of the difference of solubility of propanols to PES and PVP.  相似文献

Development and use of novel membranes for forward osmosis (FO) applications have gained popularity throughout the world. To enhance FO membrane performance, a novel thin-film nanocomposite membrane was fabricated by interfacial polymerization incorporating Fullerenol (C60(OH)n) nanomaterial, having n in the range of 24–28 into the active layer. Different concentrations of fullerenol loading (100, 200, 400, and 800 ppm) were added to the top skin layer. The structural and surface properties of the pure thin-film composite membrane (TFC) and fullerenol-incorporated thin-film nanocomposite (FTFC) membranes, were characterized by ATR-FTIR, SEM, and AFM. FO performance and separation properties were evaluated in terms of water flux, reverse salt flux, antifouling propensity, water permeability and salt permeability for all TFC and FTFC membranes. Osmotic performance tests showed that FTFC membranes achieved higher water flux and reverse salt flux selectivity compared with those of TFC membranes. The FTFC membrane with a fullerenol loading of 400 ppm exhibited a water flux of 26.1 L m?2 h?1 (LMH), which is 83.03% higher than that of the TFC membrane with a specific reverse salt flux of 0.18 g/L using 1 M sodium chloride draw solution against deionized water in FO mode. The fullerenol incorporation in FTFC membranes also contributed to a decreased fouling propensity.  相似文献

In this study, PVA‐SiO2 was synthesized by modifying silica (SiO2) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), then a novel polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was prepared by incorporating the prepared PVA‐SiO2 into membrane matrix using the non‐solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The effects of PVA‐SiO2 particle on the properties of the PVDF membrane were systematically studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), surface pore size, porosity, and water contact angle. The results indicated that with the addition of PVA‐SiO2 particles in the PVDF UF membranes, membrane mean pore size increased from 80.06 to 126.00 nm, porosity improved from 77.4% to 89.1%, and water contact angle decreased from 75.61° to 63.10°. Furthermore, ultrafiltration experiments were conducted in terms of pure water flux, bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection, and anti‐fouling performance. It indicated that with the addition of PVA‐SiO2 particles, pure water flux increased from 70 to 126 L/m2 h, BSA rejection increased from 67% to 86%, flux recovery ratio increased from 60% to 96%, total fouling ratio decreased from 50% to 18.7%, and irreversible fouling ratio decreased from 40% to 4%. Membrane anti‐fouling property was improved, and it can be expected that this work may provide some references to the improvement of the anti‐fouling performance of the PVDF ultrafiltration membrane. In this paper, nanofiltration (NF) polymer membranes based on polyestersulphone (PES) were prepared by the phase inversion method. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) and zinc nitrate (Zn(NO3)2) as a surface modifier and glutealdehyde (GA) as cross-linker was used. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR) was used to confirm the chemical composition on the membrane surface. Membranes were also characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and 3D surface images. Water contact angle, average pore size and porosity measurements, water flux, salt rejection, and membrane anti-fouling ability were discussed. Modified membranes showed a smoother surface than the original membrane. The amount of pure water flux decreased with increasing the concentration of modifiers at the surface, but the yield of Na2SO4 salt increased, 53% in virgin membrane and 83% in M3 membrane. Modified membranes had better anti-fouling and hydrophilicity properties than primary membranes. The lowest contact angle value was 26.2° for M4. Also, the best anti-clogging comparable properties were for the M3 membrane with FRR = 63.37%, Rr = 10.69%, Rir = 36.6%, and Rt = 47.3%. By increasing the concentration of modifiers, the removal of CuNO3 and CuSO4 improved that the M1 membrane (97.59%) had the highest Cu(NO3)2 separation and the M4 membrane (87.5%) had the most increased CuSO4 separation.  相似文献
