Tunable hydrogel that contained well‐defined poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), labile lactate groups, and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segments was prepared through a combination of reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and esterification reaction. A diol was prepared via the esterification between lactic acid (LA) and PEG. Then the diol was allowed to react with maleic anhydride to produce a diacid. Meanwhile, well‐defined PVA was synthesized by the alcoholysis of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) obtained by RAFT polymerization of vinyl acetate. The hydrogels with tailor‐made structure were generated by crosslinking PVA with LA‐based diacid. The structures and properties of LA‐based intermediates and the hydrogels were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. Both LA‐based diol and diacid were semicrystalline and water‐soluble, their melting temperature and glass transition temperature were 52 and ?51, 54 and ?41°C, respectively. The polydispersity indexes of the precursor of PVA samples were within the range of 1.03–1.10. It was found that the thermal stability of hydrogel was higher than that of LA‐based diacid. Both the swelling and release properties of the hydrogels depend on the feeding ratio of PVA/LEM and the chain length of PVA, which reflected that the structure and properties of the hydrogels were controllable. Hybrid hydrogels were synthesized mixing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and xanthan gum (XG) in different molar ratios and using trisodium trimetaphosphate, as crosslinking agent, to obtain potential nucleus pulposus substitutes. Human Nucleus Pulposus (NP) is a hydrogel-like tissue with peculiar properties, which determine its role in supporting and dissipating spinal loads. Hydrogel obtained mixing PVA and XG in molar ratio 4:1 (PX25) showed mechanical, swelling, and thermal properties, i.e., heat capacity, which make it a good candidate as a potential NP substitute. Preliminary cytotoxicity tests pointed out that the developed materials did not show any signs of cytotoxicity towards NIH3T3 cells.  相似文献

Rheological behavior of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) mixtures in aqueous solutions and hydrogel state was investigated. The complex dependence of the viscosity on PVA/PVP mixture composition could be attributed to cumulative effects of electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding or association phenomena. Physical hydrogels were prepared by freezing/thawing method and their viscoelastic properties were followed as a function of number of cryogenic cycles and aging time at 37 °C. From swelling experiments, it was observed that the diffusion of water molecules into the hydrogel pores is Fickian (for low number of cryogenic cycles) and it becomes pseudo-Fickian as the sample is submitted to more than 10 freezing/thawing cycles. PVA/PVP hydrogels obtained by physical interactions present a high degree of tailorability and they are suitable candidates for biomedical applications.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was modified with phthalic and succinic anhydrides to give vinyl alcohol–vinyl ester copolymers that contain carboxylate groups. These half‐esters were then crosslinked by using the poly‐ (ethylene glycol) (PEG) 400 diglycidylether. Low crosslinker/carboxylate ratios were used to obtain low degrees of crosslinking, so the capacity of the resulting hydrogel to absorb water was high. Water absorption was determined gravimetrically as a function of time at room temperature. The equilibrium swelling ratio and compressive modulus were characterized for all the resulting PVA hydrogels and related to the network structure. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A dual network hydrogel made up of polyvinylalcohol (PVA) crosslinked by borax and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was prepared by means of freezing-thawing circles. Here PVP was incorporated by linking with PVA to form a network structure, while the introduction of borax played the role of crosslinking PVA chains to accelerate the formation of a dual network structure in PVA/PVP composite hydrogel, thus endowing the hydrogel with high mechanical properties. The effects of both PVP and borax on the hydrogels were evaluated by comparing the two systems of PVA/PVP/borax and PVA/borax hydrogels. In the former system, adding 4.0% PVP not only increased the water content and the storage modulus but also enhanced the mechanical strength of the final hydrogel. But an overdose of PVP just as more than 4.0% tended to undermine the structure of hydrogels, and thus deteriorated hydrogels’ properties because of the weakened secondary interaction between PVP and PVA. Likewise, increasing borax could promote the gel crosslinking degree, thus making gels show a decrease in water content and swelling ratio, meanwhile shrinking the pores inside the hydrogels and finally enhancing the mechanical strength of hydrogels prominently. The developed hydrogel with high performances holds great potential for applications in biomedical and industrial fields.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to develop novel poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogel blends and PVA-derived organic-inorganic hybrid materials and perform nanostructural characterizations. PVA and PEG hydrogels were prepared by dissolving the polymer in aqueous solution, followed by addition of glutaraldehyde (GA) chemical crosslinker. Hybrids were synthesized by reacting PVA in aqueous solution with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). PVA/TEOS were also modified in the nanometer-scale by crosslinking with GA during the synthesis reaction. Hydrogels and hybrids were characterized by using small-angle X-ray scattering synchrotron radiation (SAXS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Thin film samples were prepared for SAXS experiments. SAXS results have indicated different nano-ordered disperse phases for hydrogels made of PVA, PEG, PVA/GA, PVA/PEG. Also, PVA/TEOS and PVA/TEOS/GA hybrids have indicated different X-ray scattering patterns. FTIR spectra have showed major vibration bands associated with organic-inorganic chemical groups present in the hybrid nanocomposites PVA/TEOS and PVA/TEOS/GA. PVA/PEG hydrogels and PVA-derived hybrid materials were successfully produced with GA crosslinking in nanometer-scale network.  相似文献

Some structural features of hydrogels from poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) of various crosslinking degrees have been investigated through mechanical and swelling measurements. Interpenetrating polymer hydrogels (IPHs) of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and PAAc have been prepared by a sequential method: crosslinked PAAc chains were formed in aqueous solution by crosslinking copolymerization of acrylic acid and N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide in the presence of PVA. The application of freeze–thaw (F–T) cycles leads to the formation of a PVA hydrogel within the synthesized PAAc hydrogel. The swelling and viscoelastic properties of the IPHs were evaluated as a function of the content of crosslinker and the application of one F–T cycle. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogels for wound dressings from a mixture of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), glycerin and an antibacterial agent were obtained by a γ-irradiation combined with freeze-thawing. The physical properties such as the gelation and swelling degree of the hydrogels were examined. When the PVP/PVA ratio was 6: 4 (wt%) and prepared by combined irradiation and freeze-thawing, it showed an excellent swelling capacity (>1,200%). The antibacterial effect of the hydrogels containing the antibacterial agents was observed to be effective as the concentration of antibacterial agents increased. The results demonstrated that hydrogel in a proper blending ratio could be used as a wound dressing that can accelerate wound healing with an antibacterial effect.  相似文献

Injectable hydrogel formulations that undergo in situ gelation at body temperature are promising for minimally invasive tissue repair. This work focuses on the investigation of injectable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) mixtures. The injectable PVA–PEG aqueous solutions form a hydrogel as temperature is reduced to near body temperature, while filling a defect in the injection site. Gamma sterilization of these solutions compromises injectability presumably due to crosslinking of PVA. We hypothesized that by modifying the PEG molecular weight and its concentration, injectability of radiation sterilized PVA–PEG hydrogels can be optimized without compromising the mechanical properties of the resulting gel. The use of a bimodal mixture of higher and lower molecular weight PEG (600 and 200 g/mol) resulted in lower PVA/PEG solution viscosity, better injectability, and higher gel mechanical strength. The PVA/bimodal-PEG had a lower viscosity at 2733 ± 149 cP versus a viscosity of 5560 ± 278 cP for PVA/unimodal-PEG (400 g/mol). The gel formed with the bimodal PEG mixture had higher creep resistance (61% total creep strain under 0.5 MPa) than that formed with unimodal PEG (84%). These hydrogel formulations are promising candidates for minimally invasive tissue repair. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels have shown potential applications in bionic articular cartilage due to their tissue-like viscoelasticity, good biocompatibility and low friction. However, their lack of adequate mechanical properties is a key obstacle for PVA hydrogels to replace natural cartilage. In this study, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and glycerol were introduced into PVA, and a PVA/PEG–glycerol composite hydrogel was synthesized using a mixing physical crosslinking method. The mechanical properties, hydrophilicity and tribological behavior of the PVA/PEG–glycerol hydrogel were investigated by changing the concentration of glycerol in PEG. The results showed that the tensile strength of the hydrogel reached 26.6 MPa at 270% elongation at break with 20 wt% of glycerol plasticizer, which satisfied the demand of natural cartilage. In addition, the excellent hydrophilicity of glycerol provides good lubricating properties for the composite gel under dry friction. Meanwhile, self-healing and cellular immunity assays demonstrated that the composite gel could have good self-healing ability and excellent biocompatibility even in the absence of external stimuli. This study provides a new candidate material for the design of articular cartilage, which has the potential to facilitate advances in artificial joint cartilage repair. © 2022 Society of Industrial Chemistry.  相似文献

Radiation can induce chemical reactions to modify polymers even when they are in the solid state or at a low temperature. Radiation crosslinking can be easily adjusted by controlling the radiation dose and is reproducible. The finished product contains no residuals of substances required to initiate the chemical crosslinking, which can restrict its application possibilities. In these studies, hydrogels for wound dressing were made from a mixture of chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/poly‐N‐vinylpyrrolidone (PVP) by freezing and thawing, gamma‐ray irradiation, or combined freezing and thawing and gamma‐ray irradiation. The physical properties of the hydrogel, such as gelation, water absorptivity, and gel strength, were examined to evaluate the usefulness of the hydrogels for wound dressing. The PVA/PVP composition was 60:40, PVA/PVP–chitosan ratio was in the range 9:1–7:3, and the concentration of, PVA/PVP–chitosan as a solid was 15 wt %. A mixture of PVA/PVP–chitosan was exposed to gamma irradiation doses of 25, 35, 50, 60 and 70 kGy to evaluate the effect of irradiation dose on the physical properties of hydrogels. Water‐soluble chitosan was used in these experiment. The physical properties of the hydrogels, such as gelation and gel strength, were higher when the combination of freezing and thawing and irradiation were used rather than just freezing and thawing. The PVA/PVP–chitosan composition and irradiation dose had a greater influence on swelling than gel content. Swelling percent increased as the composition of chitosan in PVA/PVP–chitosan increased. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 85: 1787–1794, 2002  相似文献

A novel series of copolymeric acrylamide/potassium acrylate superabsorbents, blended with poly(vinyl alcohol), have been synthesized by using N, N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker and potassium persulphate (K2S2O8) as an initiator. Swelling behavior of these hydrogels in water was investigated; and on the basis of swelling properties, the diffusional behavior of water into these hydrogel systems was analyzed. It was observed that with the increase of amount of poly(vinyl alcohol) or crosslinking, the swelling of the hydrogels decreased. The hydrogel synthesized by addition of 5% poly(vinyl alcohol) and 0.25% crosslinking showed maximum swelling of 54445%. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 1927–1931, 2005  相似文献

Copolymers composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) were crosslinked with chitosan to prepare semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels by an ultraviolet (UV) irradiation method for application as potential biomedical materials. PVA/PDMS copolymer and chitosan was cast to prepare hydrogel films, followed by a subsequent crosslinking with 2,2‐dimethoxy‐2‐phenylacetophenone as a nontoxic photoinitiator by UV irradiation. Various semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (semi‐IPNs) were prepared from different weight ratios of chitosan and the copolymer of PVA/PDMS. Photocrosslinked hydrogels exhibited an equilibrium water content (EWC) in the range of 65–95%. Swelling behaviors of these hydrogels were studied by immersion of the gels in various buffer solutions. Particularly, the PCN13 as the highest chitosan weight ratio in semi‐IPN hydrogels showed the highest EWC in time‐dependent and pH‐dependent swelling. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogel is prepared from a poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blend solution by gamma radiation with a 60Co λ source at room temperature. Properties of the prepared hydrogel, such as gel fraction, gel strength swelling ratio, equilibrium water content, and water absorption in room temperature, were investigated. Blending hydrogel with PVP and PVA obviously increased the gel strength and decreased the swelling ratio of hydrogel. It was observed that the gel fraction increased while the swelling ratio and water content decreased with increased radiation dose, but gel strength increased up to a certain radiation dose and then decreased. The percentage of water absorption at room temperature increased with time but after a certain time it became steady and decreased with radiation dose.  相似文献

The poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVA–PVP) hydrogels containing silver nanoparticles were prepared by repeated freezing–thawing treatment. The silver content in the solid composition was in the range of 0.1–1.0 wt %, the silver particle size was from 20 to 100 nm, and the weight ratio of PVA to PVP was 70 : 30. The influence of silver nanoparticles on the properties of PVA–PVP matrix was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter, infrared spectroscopy and UV–vis spectroscopy, using PVA–PVP films containing silver particles as a model. The morphology of freeze‐dried PVA–PVP hydrogel matrix and dispersion of the silver nanoparticles in the matrix was examined by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that a three‐dimensional structure was formed during the process of freezing–thawing treatment and no serious aggregation of the silver nanoparticles occurred. Water absorption properties, release of silver ions from the hydrogels and the antibacterial effects of the hydrogels against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were examined too. It was proved that the nanosilver‐containing hydrogels had an excellent antibacterial ability. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 125–133, 2007  相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP)/chitosan hydrogels were prepared by a low‐temperature treatment and subsequent 60Co γ‐ray irradiation and then were medicated with ciprofloxacin lactate (an antibiotic) and chitosan oligomer (molecular weight = 3000 g/mol). The gel content, swelling ratio, tensile strength, and crystallinity of the hydrogels were determined. The effects of the chitosan molecular weight, the low‐temperature treatment procedure, and the radiation dosage on the hydrogel properties were examined. The molecular weight of chitosan was lowered by the irradiation, but its basic polysaccharide structure was not destroyed. Repeating the low‐temperature treatment and γ‐ray irradiation caused effective physical crosslinking and chemical crosslinking, respectively, and contributed to the mechanical strength of the final hydrogels. The incorporation of PVP and chitosan resulted in a significant improvement in the equilibrium swelling ratio and elongation ratio of the prepared hydrogels. The ciprofloxacin lactate and chitosan oligomer were soaked into the hydrogels. Their in vitro release behaviors were examined, and they were found to follow diffusion‐controlled kinetics. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 2453–2463, 2006  相似文献

A novel physicochemical crosslinked nanocomposite hydrogel based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and natural Na‐montmorillonite (Na+‐MMT) was synthesized by chemical crosslinking of nanocomposite hydrogel followed by a freezing‐thawing process. The effects of physical crosslinking, as well as physicochemical crosslinking, on the structure, morphology, and properties (thermal, mechanical, swelling, and deswelling) of nanocomposite hydrogels were investigated and compared with each other. The structure and morphology of nanocomposites were studied by Fourier transform infrared, X‐ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy techniques. The thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposites that were affected by physical and physicochemical crosslinking were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimeter, dynamic mechanical analysis, hardness test, and Water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) experiments. The results showed that the physicochemical crosslinking of a PVA nanocomposite leads to a reduction in crystallinity and melting temperature, as well as an increase in the Hardness and WVTR compared to a physically crosslinked PVA nanocomposite hydrogel. The swelling and deswelling experiments were performed using a gravimetric method, and it was shown that controlled crosslinking of PVA nanocomposite hydrogel with glutaraldehyde causes the swelling ratio to increase and the cumulative amount of water loss to decrease. The swelling (sorption) and deswelling (desorption) kinetics data for physically and physicochemical crosslinking of nanocomposite hydrogels were fitted with a fickian model. It is concluded that through control crosslinking of PVA nanocomposite can lead to a hydrogel with higher swelling capacity than that is in conventional PVA nanocomposite hydrogel. POLYM. In this study, hydrogels were prepared from blends of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). The miscibility of the polymers was confirmed with differential scanning calorimetry with the appearance of a single glass‐transition temperature. Additionally, a negative Flory–Huggins interaction parameter further verified the interaction between PVA and PVP. We evaluated the stability of the hydrogels by swelling the gels in phosphate‐buffered saline solutions at pH 7.4. With attenuated total reflectance‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, it was determined that, during swelling, PVP dissolved out of the gel over time and the equilibrium gel content of PVP was nearly identical in all of the samples investigated. After the dissolution of PVP, the equilibrium water content of the gels ranged from 64 to 76 wt %. Additionally, rubber elasticity studies were performed to elucidate information about the physically crosslinked network structure. As determined from rubber elasticity experiments, the mesh size of the physically crosslinked hydrogels ranged from 90 to 230 Å. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献
