Based on a “graft from” strategy, the surface of starch nanocrystals (StN) were functionalized by grafting with polycaprolactone (PCL) chains via microwave assisted ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). The modified natural nanoparticles were then compounded into a PCL‐based waterborne polyurethane as matrix. The structural and mechanical properties of the WPU/StN‐g‐PCL nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, DSC, DMA, and tensile testing. It was interesting to note that a loading‐level of 5 wt % StN‐g‐PCL resulted in a simultaneous enhancement of tensile strength and elongation at break, both of which were higher than those of neat WPU. This enhancement was attributed to the uniform dispersion of StN‐g‐PCL because of its nano‐scale size, the increased entanglements mediated with grafted PCL chains, and the reinforcing function of rigid StN. Increasing the StN‐g‐PCL content however caused the StN‐g‐PCL to self‐aggregate as crystalline domains, which impeded improvement in tensile strength and elongation at break, but significantly enhanced Young's modulus. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, amphiphilic starch nanocrystals were synthesized by graft copolymerization of starch nanocrystals with styrene in aqueous emulsion system. The starch nanocrystals of size around 50 nm were used, which were prepared by acid hydrolysis of corn starch. The structure of starch‐g‐polystyrene nanocrystals was characterized by Fourier transform infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). The crystalline structure as well as its particle morphology was studied by X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The results indicated that the amphiphilic starch nanocrystals obtained exhibit the size around 80–100 nm. Its crystalline structure is basically not changed after grafting polystyrene suggested that the polystyrene was essentially grafted on the surface of starch nanocrystals. Wettability experiments indicated that the prepared starch‐g‐polystyrene nanocrystals can be uniformly dispersed both in water phase and oil phase revealing excellent amphiphilicity. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isotactic polypropylene graft copolymers, isotactic[polypropylene‐graft‐poly(methyl methacrylate)] (i‐PP‐g‐PMMA) and isotactic[polypropylene‐graft‐polystyrene] (i‐PP‐g‐PS), were prepared by atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using a 2‐bromopropionic ester macro‐initiator from functional polypropylene‐containing hydroxyl groups. This kind of functionalized propylene can be obtained by copolymerization of propylene and borane monomer using isospecific MgCl2‐supported TiCl4 as catalyst. Both the graft density and the molecular weights of i‐PP‐based graft copolymers were controlled by changing the hydroxyl group contents of functionalized polypropylene and the amount of monomer used in the grafting reaction. The effect of i‐PP‐g‐PS graft copolymer on PP‐PS blends and that of i‐PP‐g‐PMMA graft copolymer on PP‐PMMA blends were studied by scanning electron microscopy. A new graft copolymers poly(aryl ether sulfone)‐graft‐polystyrene (PSF‐g‐PS) and poly(aryl ether sulfone)‐graft‐[polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate)] (PSF‐g‐(PS‐b‐PMMA)) were successfully prepared via atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) catalyzed by FeCl2/isophthalic acid in N,N‐dimethyl formamide. The products were characterized by GPC, DSC, IR, TGA and NMR. The characterization data indicated that the graft copolymerization was accomplished via conventional ATRP mechanism. The effect of chloride content of the macroinitiator on the graft copolymerization was investigated. Only one glass transition temperature (Tg) was detected by DSC for the graft copolymer PSF‐g‐PS and two glass transition temperatures were observed in the DSC curve of PSF‐g‐(PS‐b‐PMMA). The presence of PSF in PSF‐b‐PS or PSF‐g‐(PS‐b‐PMMA) was found to improve thermal stabilities. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Polystyrene (PS)‐incorporated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) organic–inorganic hybrid graft copolymer could be achieved by click coupling reaction between alkyne groups in POSS and azido groups in PS via “graft onto” strategy. Alkyne‐functionalized POSS was synthesized via thiol‐ene facile click reaction and subsequent amidation reaction with very high yield. Azido‐multifunctionalized PS could be synthesized by chloromethylation and subsequent azido reaction. The chemical structures of PS‐(CH2Cl)m, PS‐(CH2N3)m, and PS‐g‐POSS were determined by Fourier transform infrared and 1H NMR characterization. PS‐g‐POSS presented a better hydrophobic property with contact angle of 113° than that of PS (85°). And PS‐g‐POSS with ≤5% of grafting degree had lower glass transition temperature (Tg) than that of PS and then it increased up to 112°C with grafting degree. An obvious aggregation of POSS phase with 10–80 nm in size was formed in PS‐g‐POSS matrix. In addition, 5 wt % of PS‐g‐POSS was added to general purpose polystyrene (GPPS) to remarkably improve its tensile strength from 45 to 57 MPa. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Natural rubber (NR) latex was grafted by emulsion polymerization with styrene monomer, using cumene hydroperoxide/tetraethylene pentamene as redox initiator system. The polystyrene‐grafted NR (PS‐g‐NR) was hydrogenated by diimide reduction in the latex form using hydrazine and hydrogen peroxide with boric acid as a promoter. At the optimum condition for graft copolymerization, a grafting efficiency of 81.5% was obtained. In addition, the highest hydrogenation level of 47.2% was achieved using a hydrazine:hydrogen peroxide molar ratio of 1:1.1. Hydrogenation of the PS‐g‐NR (H(PS‐g‐NR)) increased the thermal stability. Transmission electron microscopy analysis of the H(PS‐g‐NR) particles revealed a nonhydrogenated rubber core and hydrogenated outer rubber layer, in accordance with the layer model. The addition of H(PS‐g‐NR) at 10 wt % as modifier in an acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) copolymer increased the tensile and impact strengths and the thermal resistance of the ABS blends, and to a greater extent than that provided by blending with NR or PS‐g‐NR. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) dispersed in N‐methylpyrrolidone (NMP) were functionalized by addition of polystyryl radicals from 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy‐ended polystyrene (SWCNT‐g‐PS). The amount of polystyrene grafted to the nanotubes was in the range 20‐25 wt% irrespective of polystyrene number‐average molecular weight ranging from 2270 to 49 500 g mol?1. In Raman spectra the ratios of D‐band to G‐band intensity were similar for all of the polystyrene‐grafted samples and for the starting SWCNTs. Numerous near‐infrared electronic transitions of the SWCNTs were retained after polymer grafting. Transmission electron microscopy images showed bundles of SWCNT‐g‐PS of various diameters with some of the polystyrene clumped on the bundle surfaces. Composites of SWCNT‐g‐PS in a commercial‐grade polystyrene were prepared by precipitation of mixtures of the components from NMP into water, i.e. the coagulation method of preparation. Electrical conductivities of the composites were about 10?15 S cm?1 and showed no percolation threshold with increasing SWCNT content. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composites increased at low filler loadings and remained constant with further nanotube addition irrespective of the length and number of grafted polystyrene chains. The change of heat capacity (ΔCp) at Tg decreased with increasing amount of SWCNT‐g‐PS of 2850 g mol?1, but ΔCp changed very little with the amount of SWCNT‐g‐PS of higher molecular weight. The expected monotonic decrease in ΔCp coupled with the plateau behavior of Tg suggests there is a limit to the amount that Tg of the matrix polymer can increase with increasing amount of nanotube filler. Hydrophobically modified nanosilica was prepared from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and γ‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) by a two step sol‐gel process. The polystyrene‐grafted‐modified nanosilica (PS‐g‐mSiO2) hybrid particles were prepared by grafting polystyrene onto the resulting hydrophobically modified nanosilica by dispersion polymerization. The hybrid nanoparticles were subsequently used as the filler to fabricate polypropyrene (PP) nanocomposites. The crystallization kinetics, crystal morphology and crystallization phase component of PS‐g‐mSiO2/PP nanocomposite were studied using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). Crystallization half life (t1/2) decreased, while the Arami exponent (n) of PS‐g‐mSiO2/PP nanocomposite increased compared with that of virgin PP. A rheological study allowed the unambiguous characterization of the dispersibility of nanosilicas in PS‐g‐mSiO2/PP nanocomposite. The storage modulus, melt viscosity and the elongation to break of the PS‐g‐mSiO2/PP nanocomposite were found to be strongly dependent on the grafting of PS on nanosilicas. POLYM. Styrene‐EPDM‐acrylonitrile tripolymer (EPDM‐g‐SAN) was synthesized by the graft copolymerization of styrene (St) and acrylonitrile (An) onto ethylene‐propylene‐diene terpolymer (EPDM) with “phase inversion” emulsification technique. The high impact strength engineering plastics AES was the blend of SAN resin and EPDM‐g‐SAN, which occupied good weathering and yellow discoloration resistivity. The effects of An percentage in comonomer and the weight proportion of EPDM to St‐An on graft copolymerization behavior and AES notched impact strength were studied. The results showed that monomer conversion ratio (CR) exhibited a peak when the An percentage changed, and the maximum value was 97.5%. Grafting ratio (GR) and grafting efficiency (GE) enhance as well. The notched impact strength of AES presented a peak with the maximum value of 53.0 KJ/m2, when An percentage was at the range of 35–40%. The spectra of FTIR showed that St and An were graft onto the EPDM. DSC analysis illuminated that Tg of EPDM phase in the blends was lower than that of the pure EPDM. TEM and SEM micrographs indicated that the polarity of g‐SAN of EPDM‐g‐SAN was the main factor effect the particle morphology, in terms of size, distribution and isotropy. When weight ratio of St to An was 65/35, the polarity of g‐SAN chains was appropriate, and the EPDM‐g‐SAN particles dispersed well in the SAN matrix. The super impact toughness is interpreted in terms of EPDM phase cavitation and enhanced plastic shear yielding. The highest toughness occurs at an optimum EPDM‐g‐SAN phase particle size which is about 0.2 μm in SAN resin matrix. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Three polypropylene‐g‐polystyrene (PP‐g‐PS) graft copolymers with the same branch density but different branch lengths were evaluated as compatibilizing agents for PP/PS blends. The morphological and rheological results revealed that the addition of PP‐g‐PS graft copolymers significantly reduced the PS particle size and enhanced the interfacial adhesion between PP and PS phases. Furthermore, it is verified that the branch length of PP‐g‐PS graft copolymer had opposite effects on its compatibilizing effect: on one hand, increasing the branch length could improve the compatibilizing effect of graft copolymer on PP/PS blends, demonstrated by the reduction of PS particle size and the enhancement of interfacial adhesion; on the other hand, increasing the branch length would increase the melt viscosity of PP‐g‐PS graft copolymer, which prevented it from migrating effectively to the interface of blend components. Additionally, the crystallization and melting behaviors of PP and PP/PS blends were compared. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 40126.  相似文献

A series of PB‐g‐SAN impact modifiers (polybutadiene particles grafted by styrene and acrylonitrile) are synthesized by seed emulsion copolymerization initiated by oil‐soluble initiator, azobisiobutyronitrile (AIBN). The ABS blends are obtained by mixing SAN resin with PB‐g‐SAN impact modifiers. The mechanical behavior and the phase morphology of ABS blends are investigated. The graft degree (GD) and grafting efficiency (GE) are investigated, and the high GD shows that AIBN has a fine initiating ability in emulsion grafting of PB‐g‐SAN impact modifiers. The morphology of the rubber particles is observed by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The TEM photograph shows that the PB‐g‐SAN impact modifier initiated by AIBN is more likely to form subinclusion inside the rubber particles. The dynamic mechanical analysis on ABS blends shows that the subinclusion inside the rubber phase strongly influences the Tg, maximum tan δ, and the storage modulus of the rubber phase. The mechanical test indicates that the ABS blends, which have the small and uniform subinclusions dispersed in the rubber particles, have the maximum impact strength. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Core–shell polybutadiene‐graft‐polystyrene (PB‐g‐PS) rubber particles with different ratios of polybutadiene to polystyrene were prepared by emulsion polymerization through grafting styrene onto polybutadiene latex. The weight ratio of polybutadiene to polystyrene ranged from 50/50 to 90/10. These core‐shell rubber particles were then blended with polystyrene to prepare PS/PB‐g‐PS blends with a constant rubber content of 20 wt%. PB‐g‐PS particles with a lower PB/PS ratio (≤70/30) form a homogeneous dispersion in the polystyrene matrix, and the Izod notched impact strength of these blends is higher than that of commercial high‐impact polystyrene (HIPS). It is generally accepted that polystyrene can only be toughened effectively by 1–3 µm rubber particles through a toughening mechanism of multiple crazings. However, the experimental results show that polystyrene can actually be toughened by monodisperse sub‐micrometer rubber particles. Scanning electron micrographs of the fracture surface and stress‐whitening zone of blends with a PB/PS ratio of 70/30 in PB‐g‐PS copolymer reveal a novel toughening mechanism of modified polystyrene, which may be shear yielding of the matrix, promoted by cavitation. Subsequently, a compression‐induced activation method was explored to compare the PS/PB‐g‐PS blends with commercial HIPS, and the result show that the toughening mechanisms of the two samples are different. The N‐substituted polyaniline (PANi) was synthesized by incorporation of bromine‐terminated polystyrene (PS‐Br) onto the emeraldine form of polyaniline. End brominated polystyrene was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique and then deprotonated polyaniline was reacted with PS‐Br to prepare PS‐grafted PANi (PS‐g‐PANi) copolymer through N‐grafting reaction. The degree of N‐grafting can be controlled by adjusting the molar feed ratio of PS‐Br to the number of repeat units of PANi. The microstructure and compositions of the PS‐g‐PANi copolymers with different degrees of N‐substitution were characterized by FT‐IR, elemental analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cyclicvoltammetry shows that the electroactivity of N‐substituted PANi is strongly dependent on the degree of N‐grafting. The solubility of PS‐g‐PANi copolymers in common organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran and chloroform was improved by increasing the degree of N‐grafting, and also the samples are partially soluble in xylene. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: Sub‐micrometer core‐shell polybutadiene‐graft‐polystyrene (PB‐g‐PS) copolymers with various ratios of polybutadiene (PB) core to polystyrene (PS) shell were synthesized by emulsion grafting polymerization with 1,2‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. These graft copolymers were blended with PS to prepare PS/PB‐g‐PS with a rubber content of 20 wt%. The mechanical properties, morphologies of the core‐shell rubber particles and deformation mechanisms under various conditions were investigated. RESULTS: Infrared spectroscopic analysis confirmed that PS could be grafted onto the PB rubber particles. The experimental results showed that a specimen with a ‘cluster’ dispersion state of rubber particles in the PS matrix displayed better mechanical properties. Transmission electron micrographs suggested that crazing only occurred from rubber particles and extended in a bridge‐like manner to neighboring rubber particles parallel to the equatorial plane at a high speed for failure specimens, while the interaction between crazing and shear yielding stabilized the growing crazes at a low speed in tensile tests. CONCLUSION: AIBN can be used as an initiator in the graft polymerization of styrene onto PB. The dispersion of rubber particles in a ‘cluster’ state leads to better impact resistance. The deformation mechanism in impact tests was multi‐crazing, and crazing and shear yielding absorbed the energy in tensile experiments. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

We carried out the graft copolymerization of the water‐soluble natural polymer dextrin onto preirradiated polypropylene (PP) in an aqueous medium using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as the radical initiator. PP was irradiated by γ rays from a Co60 source at a constant dose rate of 3.40 kGy/h to introduce hydroperoxide linkages, which served as the sites for grafting. The graft copolymerization was studied as a function of different reaction parameters, and the maximum percentage grafting (Pg; 55%) of dextrin onto PP was obtained at optimum conditions of [BPO] = 5.165 × 10−2 mol/L, temperature = 60°C in 120 min with 15 mL of water. Different grafting parameters, such as the percentage apparent grafting, percentage grafting, and percentage true grafting have been evaluated. The graft copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Swelling studies were carried out in pure, binary, ternary, and quaternary solvent systems composed of water, ethanol (EtOH), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) at different ratios. The maximum swelling percentage PP‐g‐dextrin (both composite and true graft) was observed in pure DMSO and DMF followed by EtOH and water. Water‐retention studies of PP and PP‐g‐dextrin (both composite and true graft) were investigated at different time periods, temperatures, and pH values. The maximum percentage water retention of PP‐g‐dextrin (composite, 124%) was observed at 8 h and 50°C in a neutral medium (pH 7). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Blend systems of polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene‐co‐(ethylene‐propylene))‐block‐polystyrene (SEEPS) triblock copolymer with three types of hydrocarbon oil of different molecular weight were prepared. The E″ curves as a function of temperature exhibited two peaks; one peak at low temperature (? ?50°C), arising from the glass transition of the poly[ethylene‐co‐(ethylene‐propylene)] (PEEP) phase and a high temperature peak (? 100°C), arising from the glass transition of the polystyrene (PS) phase. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PEEP phase shifted to lower temperature with increasing oil content. The shifted Tg depended on the types of oil and was lower for the low molecular weight oil. The Tg of PS phase of the present blend system, were found to be constant and independent of the oil content, when molecular weight of the oil is high. However, for the lower molecular weight oil, the Tg of the PS phase also shifted to lower temperatures. This fact indicates that the oil of high molecular weight is merely dissolved in the PS phase. The E′ at (75°C, at which temperature both of PEEP and PS phases are in glassy state, was found to be independent of oil content. In contrast, at 25°C, at which temperature the PEEP phase is in rubbery state, the E′ decreased sharply with increasing oil content. This result indicates that the hydrocarbon oil was a selective solvent in the PEEP phase. It mainly dissolved in the PEEP phase, although slightly dissolved into the PS phase as well, when molecular weight of oil is low. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Polypropylene‐graft‐cardanol (CAPP) was prepared by reactive extrusion with polypropylene (PP) and natural renewable cardanol, which improved the inherent defects of PP such as its chemical inertness and hydrophobicity. Moreover, the cardanol grafted onto PP resolved the degradation of PP during reactive extrusion and use. The effects of reactive extrusion on the change of the molecular structure of PP, the change in the free‐radical concentration during processing, and the compatibilization of CAPP on the PP/polystyrene (PS) composite materials were examined in this study. The constants of the grafting reaction rate at the beginning of reactive extrusion were also deduced. The results show that cardanol was grafted onto PP, and the p–π conjugate system in cardanol was observed to stabilize free radicals. The grafting reaction rate (Rg) at the initial stage of the grafting reaction process was calculated through the equation Rg = kg[M·][Cardanol], where kg is the constant of the apparent grafting reaction rate and [M·] is the concentration of free radicals in the reaction system. kg first increased with the growth of temperature and then began to decrease when the temperature exceeded the critical temperature of 200°C. The mechanical properties showed almost no change after the samples were aged for 72 h. This was due to CAPP, which changed PP/PS to a ductile material from a brittle one. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 39911.  相似文献

Starch was pretreated with allyl etherification to enhance the grafting efficiency of the copolymerization of granular starch with acrylic acid and to improve the properties of starch‐g‐poly(acrylic acid) used as a warp sizing agent. The graft copolymerization was carried out in an aqueous dispersion with ferrous ammonium sulfate and hydrogen peroxide as initiators. Through the introduction of allyl groups into starch before the copolymerization, the grafting efficiency could evidently be enhanced, and properties such as fiber adhesion and film behaviors of the copolymer were improved. The pretreatment was capable of enhancing the grafting efficiency by about 10–20% when the degree of substitution of allyl starch ranged from 0.011 to 0.037. The adhesion and film behaviors also depended on the modification extent of the starch pretreatment and on the grafting ratio of the copolymer. The adhesion reached a maximum at a degree of substitution of 0.025, and the film behaviors were best when the degree of substitution ranged from 0.011 to 0.025. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The grafting of polystyrene onto dissolved starch in a twin screw extruder has been studied. This copolymerization was initiated using the thermal initiators benzoyl peroxide and K2S2O8. As end product a mixture containing polystyrene‐grafted starch, homopolymer of polystyrene and starch was obtained. Parameters like screw rotation rate, fully filled length of the extruder, wall temperature and throughput have been varied in order to obtain information about their influence on conversion, graft percentages and molecular weight of the materials formed. To increase the amount of graft points, maleic acid anhydride (MAH) was added resulting in an increased grafting of polystyrene onto starch. Graft percentages of 60% could be achieved. The total conversion of styrene could be controlled by adjusting extruder parameters like barrel temperature, fully filled length and initiator type. Conversions of 95% were found. Molecular weights of the polystyrene formed could be controlled by adding a chain transfer agent (dodecylmercaptan) to the styrene phase. In this way the molecular weight (Mn) of the styrenic part could be varied from 20,000 to 140,000. The experiments with the chain transfer agent showed that the grafting of polystyrene onto starch is a process occurring at the interface between the dissolved starch and the styrene phase.  相似文献

A xanthan gum‐gN‐vinyl formamide graft copolymer was synthesized through the graft copolymerization of N‐vinyl formamide (NVF) onto xanthan gum with an efficient system, that is, potassium monopersulfate (PMS)/Ag(I) in an aqueous medium. The effects of the concentrations of Ag(I), PMS (KHSO5), hydrogen ion, xanthan gum, and NVF along with the time and temperature on the graft copolymerization were studied by the determination of the grafting parameters (grafting ratio, add‐on, conversion, grafting efficiency, and homopolymer) and the rate of grafting. The maximum grafting ratio was obtained at a 0.6 g/dm3 concentration of xanthan gum. All the parameters showed an increasing trend with an increasing concentration of peroxymonosulfate, except the homopolymer percentage, which showed a decreasing trend. The grafting ratio, add‐on conversion, grafting efficiency, and rate of grafting increased with the concentration of Ag(I) increasing from 0.8 × 10?2 to 1.2 × 10?2 mol/dm3. The optimum time and temperature for the maximum degree of grafting were 90 min and 35°C, respectively. The graft copolymer was characterized with IR spectral analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential calorimetry analysis. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
