Exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (GNP) reinforced composites materials based on blend of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and polypropylene (PP) were prepared by melt extrusion followed by injection molding. 10 parts per hundred resin (phr) styrene‐ethylene‐butylene‐styrene‐g‐maleic anhydride was added to the base formulation PET/PP (70/30) as a compatibilizer. PET/PP/GNP composites 0–5 phr were prepared and characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis. The morphological studies revealed a homogenous dispersion of GNPs in PET/PP blends up to 3 phr loading after which agglomeration occurred. Flexural strength was enhanced by 80% at 3 phr GNPs loading which was the highest value obtained. Interestingly, the highest value for the impact strength was also recorded at 3 phr loading. The thermal stability of the composites were generally improved at all filler loading with the highest at 3 phr. From the overall results, it is clear that the optimum concentration of GNPs in the PET/PP/GNP system in terms of both mechanical and thermal properties was 3 phr loading. Although, the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites were improved, the FTIR analysis did not reveal any chemical interaction between GNP and the polymer matrix. POLYM. Polyethylene terephthalate/high density polyethylene (PET/HDPE) composites containing a near infrared reflective (NIR, nickel antimony titanium yellow rutile) pigment was prepared using ethylene‐glycidyl methacrylate‐vinyl acetate (EGMA‐VA) as a compatibilizer to increase the infrared reflection of PET/HDPE and limit the thermal heat accumulation in light of environmental and energy conservation concerns. HDPE was premixed with NIR to form N‐HDPE masterbatch. A good interfacial bonding between PET matrix and HDPE dispersed phase with the help of compatibilizer was confirmed through Fourier transform‐infrared spectra, scanning electron microscopy, and torque rheometer. For PET/N‐HDPE composites, the major X‐ray diffraction peaks and melting behaviors remained unchanged, indicating the limited alternation of crystalline structure for the composite systems with or without compatibilizer. The observed increment in the crystallization temperature of PET for the investigated PET/N‐HDPE composites was mainly due to the nucleation role of both inorganic NIR and HDPE. Tensile strength and elongation at break for compatibilized cases at various N‐HDPE contents conferred higher values than those of the corresponding counterparts without compatibilizer. Yet, Young's modulus for compatibilized systems was about 40% lower than that for systems without compatibilizer, attributed to the rubbery nature of EGMA‐VA. With the inclusion of NIR into HDPE to form PET/N‐HDPE composites with or without EGMA‐VA compatibilizer, the values of reflectance increased to a great degree. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. In this study, the effect of maleic anhydride grafted styrene‐ethylene‐butylene‐styrene (SEBS‐g‐MA) content on mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of polyethylene terephthalate/polycarbonate/halloysite nanotubes (PET/PC/HNTs) nanocomposites has been investigated. Nanocomposites of PET/PC (70 : 30) with 2 phr of HNTs were compounded using the counter rotating twin screw extruder. A series of formulations were prepared by adding 5–20 phr SEBS‐g‐MA to the composites. Incorporation of 5 phr SEBS‐g‐MA into the nanocomposites resulted in the highest tensile and flexural strength. Maximum improvement in the impact strength which is 245% was achieved at 10 phr SEBS‐g‐MA content. The elongation at break increased proportionately with the SEBS‐g‐MA content. However, the tensile and flexural moduli decreased with increasing SEBS‐g‐MA content. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a transition from a brittle fracture to ductile fracture morphology with increasing amount of SEBS‐g‐MA. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the addition of SEBS‐g‐MA into the nanocomposites promoted a better dispersion of HNTs in the matrix. A single glass transition temperature was observed from the differential scanning calorimetry test for compatibilized nanocomposites. Thermogravimetric analysis of PET/PC/HNTs nanocomposites showed high thermal stability at 15 phr SEBS‐g‐MA content. However, on further addition of SEBS‐g‐MA up to 20 phr, thermal stability of the nanocomposites decreased due to the excess amount of SEBS‐g‐MA. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and titanate coupling agent on morphology and mechanical properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE) nanocomposites was investigated. The titanate has a tendency to link chemically with the two dissimilar species GNPs and HDPE via proton coordination to generate a complete continuous phase for stress/strain transfer via the elimination of air voids and hydrophobicity. The interaction of titanate with GNPs and HDPE was effective to improve the dispersion of GNPs in HDPE composites. At constant weight (1 wt %) of titanate treatment for 2 and 5 wt % HDPE composites, we clearly observed a significantly high value of tensile strength and elongation at break than untreated composites. Particularly, composite containing 2 wt % GNPs in HDPE with titanate showed 66.5% improvement of the ultimate tensile strength and an enormously high value of elongation at break. The effect of GNPs dispersion and orientation in HDPE for the mechanical reinforcement was also evaluated based on the experimental modulus data to theoretical predictions made using the Halpin‐Tsai model. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A polypropylene/high‐density polyethylene blend containing 70 wt % polypropylene was prepared and compatibilized via the addition of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene and polyethylene. The functionalized polymer chains were coupled with two types of coupling agents. Dodecane diamine formed covalent bonds with the maleic anhydride, whereas two metallic salts, zinc acetate and sodium hydrogenocarbonate, formed ionic interactions with the carboxylic functions produced by the hydration of the anhydride cycle. The coupling of the grafted polyolefin chains was successfully realized by a single operation in a twin‐screw extruder. The coupling agents were efficient in improving the elongation at break and impact properties of the studied blends. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 95: 312–320, 2005  相似文献

This is the first study to showcase the use of maleic anhydride-grafted polyethylene (MAPE) to compatibilize polyethylene (PE)-rich blends, where polypropylene (PP) represents the minor phase. By first mixing PP with MAPE, and then adding PE, MAPE was assumed to be localized at the PE/PP interface. Microscopy analysis confirmed that MAPE led to a remarkably fine PE/PP/MAPE morphology, with PP being uniformly dispersed into PE and having an average diameter 267% smaller than that in the PE/PP blend. According to mechanical and rheological tests, this translated into a 14%, 20%, and 14% enhancement of tensile strength, tensile modulus, and tensile toughness, respectively, as well as a 10% and 20% drop in PE/PP viscosity mismatch and interfacial tension, respectively. Finally, PE/PP/MAPE tensile toughness and elongation at break were greater than those of virgin PP, while PE/PP/MAPE strength and stiffness were similar to the ones of neat PP. Therefore, this study provides industries with the possibility to utilize products rich in PE instead of those made of more expensive PP, while still keeping the level of performance high; hence, creating a paradigm shift in the development of advanced lightweight polyolefin materials with tuned functionalities.  相似文献

Enhancement of tensile strength, impact strength, and flexural strength of polypropylene/short glass fiber composites by treating the glass fibers with coupling agent, mixing with maleated polypropylene (MPP) for compatibilization and adhesion, and with nucleating agent for improvement of polypropylene crystallization was studied. The results showed that both the silane coupling agent and MPP enhance tensile strength, impact strength, and flexural strength. In the absence of MPP, the effect of silane coupling agent on the mechanical properties of the composites decreases in the following order: alkyl trimethoxy silane (WD‐10) > γ‐methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (WD‐70) > N‐(β‐aminoethyl)‐γ‐aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (WD‐52), whereas in the presence of MPP, the order changes as follows: WD‐70 > WD‐10 > WD‐52. When the glass fibers were treated with WD‐52, 4,4‐diamino‐diphenylmethane bismaleimide (BMI) can further enhance the mechanical properties of the composite. The three kinds of strengths increase with MPP amount to maximum values at 5% MPP. As a nucleating agent, adipic acid is better than disodium phthalate in improving the mechanical properties, except for the notched impact strength. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction showed that the adipic acid is an α‐type nucleating agent, whereas disodium phthalate is a β‐type nucleating agent. Blending with styrene–butadiene rubber can somewhat improve the notched impact strength of the composites, but severely lowers the tensile strength and bending strength. Scanning electron micrographs of the broken surface of the composite showed greater interfacial adhesion between the glass fibers and polypropylene in the modified composite than that without modification. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The purpose of this work was to study how mineral fillers would behave in a polypropylene (PP) matrix when PP modified with maleic anhydride (MA) and/or itaconic acid (IA) was used as a coupling agent in the preparation of mineral‐filled PP composites. The composites were characterized with tensile mechanical measurements and morphological analysis. The optimum amount of the coupling agent to be used to obtain composites with improved mechanical properties was established. The results indicated that these coupling agents enhanced the tensile strength of the composites significantly, and the extent of the coupling effect depended on the nature of the interface that formed. The incorporation of coupling agents enhanced the resistance to deformation of the composite. The behavior of IA‐modified PP as a coupling agent was similar to that of a commercial MA‐modified PP for the filled PP composites. Evidence of improved interfacial bonding was revealed by scanning electron microscopy studies, which examined the surfaces of fractured tensile test specimens; their microstructures confirmed the mechanical results with respect to the observed homogeneous or optimized dispersion of the mineral‐filler phase in these composites. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new type of graphite nanoplatelets (GN) reinforced polyarylene ether nitriles (PEN)/bisphthalonitrile (BPh) interpenetrating polymer network with high strength and high toughness was synthesized and characterized. The results showed that GN and PEN had obvious synergistic effect on its properties of resulted BPh composites. Compared to pure BPh, with a loading of 10 wt % PEN and 10 wt % GN, the obtained composites exhibited excellent mechanical properties. In these systems, the flexural toughness and strength of BPh resin could be enhanced with the incorporation of PEN; meanwhile, GN could further improve the flexural modulus and thermal stability lowered by PEN. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) matrix was modified with an organic peroxide and by a reaction with maleic anhydride (MAn) and was simultaneously compounded with untreated wood flour in a twin‐screw extruder. The thermal and mechanical properties of the modified LLDPE and the resulting composites were evaluated. The degree of crystallinity was reduced in the modified LLDPE, but it increased with the addition of wood flour for the formation of the composites. Significant improvements in the tensile strength, ductility, and creep resistance were obtained for the MAn‐modified composites. This enhancement in the mechanical behavior could be attributed to an improvement in the compatibility between the filler and the matrix. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene (PP)/exfoliated graphite nanoplatelet (xGnP) nanocomposites with various intrinsic aspect ratios of graphite nanoplatelets (GnPs; large and small in diameter) were prepared by a melt‐mixing procedure. Transmission electron microscopy showed that all types of xGnP were well‐dispersed in the polymer matrix. The effects of the dimensions and loading of the xGnPs on the morphology, mechanical reinforcement, and electrical properties of PP/xGnP were studied. A differential scanning calorimetry study of the PP/xGnP morphology indicated that all types of xGnP additives were heterogeneous nucleation sites for PP crystallization. Tensile testing, DMA, and thermogravimetric analysis of PP/xGnPs with different types of GnP additives showed enhancements in their mechanical properties, heat resistance, and thermal stability compared to plain PP. We also found a significant increase in the conductivity of PP/xGnP. The PP/xGnP with a large diameter of GnPs demonstrated the lowest percolation threshold, equal to 4 vol % of the xGnP loading. The mechanical properties were estimated by means of micromechanical modeling. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

This study presents the preparation of post-consumer polypropylene (r-PP) composites filled with 30 wt% yerba mate (YM) stick particles. To improve the fiber–matrix adhesion, three surface treatments were performed: alkaline treatment with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and use of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) and maleic anhydride graft polypropylene copolymer (PP-g-MA) as coupling agents. Mechanical properties including tensile, flexural, and impact resistance were determined, and chemical (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy [FTIR]), physical (water absorption), and morphological analyses were performed. The main findings show that the treatments were efficient in improving the mechanical properties of the composites, with emphasis on the r-PP/YM30/APTS and r-PP/YM30/PP-g-MA composites, which proved to be superior in tensile, flexion and impact strength and absorption of water compared to the untreated composite. The morphological analysis showed a better interaction between the fiber and the polymeric matrix for the composites with YM/APTS and YM/PP-g-MA, which corroborates the results of tensile and flexural strength, as well as with the spectra of FTIR in which the chemical modification of the fibers is observed. However, the results show that these treatments are promising in obtaining composites with recycled matrix with better properties.  相似文献

Poly(propylene‐co‐ethylene) composites with rice husk were prepared in a corotating intermeshing twin‐screw extruder using four different coupling agents. While modified maleic anhydrides such as maleated polypropylene (MAPP) and maleated polyethylene (MAPE) are commonly used as compatibilizers to improve interfacial adhesion between lignocellulosic filler and matrix, in this study, polypropylene grafted with acid comonomer (CAPP) and high‐density polyethylene grafted with acid comonomer (CAPE) were also used. The morphologies and the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning analysis, tensile and impact tests. The results indicate that the base resin of the compatibilizer is an important factor in determining the effectiveness of compatibilizers for composites. Composites with PP‐based compatibilizers are more effective than PE‐based compatibilizers due to the improved wetting of the former compatibilizer in the matrix polymer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solid equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) process on polypropylene (PP)/high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) blends was carried out. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the sample structures. Results showed that ECAE process could make PP/HDPE blends to produce orientation structure. Impact performance of ECAE‐PP/HDPE samples after ECAE process improved remarkably, especially for ECAE‐PP/HDPE (90/10)‐O whose impact strength reached 91.91 kJ/m2, 18.1 times higher than that of pure PP and 11.2 times higher than that of PP/HDPE (90/10). The mechanism of enhancing between HDPE and PP was discussed. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 39759.  相似文献

The effect of basalt fibre sizing on the mechanical and interphase properties of fibre‐reinforced composites was studied. Two different chemical preparations of the fibre surface (PBT‐compliant and PP‐compliant) were used. The polymer matrix was prepared from polypropylene/poly(butylene terephthalate) (PP/PBT) immiscible polymer blend and the effect of different compatibilizers on the composite properties was evaluated. SEM hints at improved fibre adhesion to the polymer matrix when a PP‐compliant sizing is applied. SEM also reveals improved compatibilization effects when block copolymer instead of multiblock copolymer is used for the PP/PBT blend preparation. The pull‐out test was applied to quantitatively evaluate the interface adhesion between the fibres and matrices. It showed a high value of the interfacial shear strength between basalt fibres modified with PP‐compliant sizing and polymer blend compatibilized by block copolymer, thus confirming good adhesion. One possible explanation of such good mechanical properties can be related to the chemical interactions between functional groups, mainly maleic anhydride on basalt fibres and the polyolefin component (PP) of the polymer matrix. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

We have characterized the melt rheological behavior and the solid tensile properties of sawdust/polyethylene composites prepared in an internal mixer. Various concentrations (from 0 to 60 wt %) and three particle sizes have been tested, in presence of a coupling agent (maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene). In the molten state, for each particle size, a mastercurve of the complex viscosity as function of frequency can be plotted, using a shift factor depending on weight fraction. We show that the shift factors can be described by a Krieger‐Dougherty law, leading to a “universal” viscosity law of the Carreau‐Yasuda type. In the solid state, the presence of sawdust increases Young modulus in uniaxial elongation, mainly for small size particles, but reduces dramatically deformation at break and tensile strength. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Enhancement of the oxygen gas barrier properties of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), used in the packaging industry, is the main objective here. For this purpose, nanocomposites of PET containing graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) were prepared by melt compounding. The effects of the nanocomposites' structural morphology on oxygen gas permeability were analyzed using a range of thermal, microscopic, and mechanical characterization techniques. The investigated nanocomposite films exhibited GNP exfoliated morphology and good mixing with PET, as well as uniform dispersion within the polymer. All nanocomposite films were shown to possess superior oxygen barrier properties and improved thermal and dimensional stability compared with the plain PET films. In the best case, for 1.5 wt % GNP, the oxygen permeation was reduced by more than 99%. The improved barrier properties are attributed to the direct effect of the GNPs and to their induced increase of degree of crystallinity. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Short bamboo fiber reinforced polypropylene composites were prepared by incorporation of various loadings of chemically modified bamboo fibers. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MA‐g‐PP) was used as compatibilizer to improve fiber–matrix adhesion. The effects of bamboo fiber loading and modification of the resin on the physical, mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of the bamboo reinforced modified PP composites were studied. Scanning electron microscopy studies of the composites were carried out on the interface and fractured surfaces. Thermogravimetric analysis and IR spectroscopy were also carried out. At 50% volume fraction of the extracted bamboo fiber in the composites, considerable increase in mechanical properties like impact, flexural, tensile, and thermal behavior like heat deflection temperature were observed. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel composite material consisting of polypropylene (PP) fibers in a random poly(propylene‐co‐ethylene) (PPE) matrix was prepared and its properties were evaluated. The thermal and mechanical properties of PP–PPE composites were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with reference to the fiber concentration. Although, by increasing PP fiber concentration in PPE, no significant difference was found in melting and crystallization temperatures of the PPE, the storage, and the tensile and flexural modulus of the composites increased linearly with fiber concentrations up to 50%, 1.5, 1.0, 1.3 GPa, respectively, which was approximately four times higher than that for the pure PPE. There is a shift in glass transition temperature of the composite with increasing fiber concentration in the composite and the damping peak became flatter, which indicates the effectiveness of fiber–matrix interaction. A higher concentration of long fibers (>50% w/w) resulted in fiber packing problems, difficulty in dispersion, and an increase in void content, which led to a reduction in modulus. Cox–Krenchel and Haplin–Tsai equations were used to predict tensile modulus of random fiber‐reinforced composites. A Cole–Cole analysis was performed to understand the phase behavior of the composites. A master curve was constructed based on time–temperature superposition (TTS) by using data over the temperature range from −50 to 90°C, which allowed for the prediction of very long and short time behavior of the composite. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene blends containing a dispersed phase of scrap rubber dusts obtained from sport shoes manufacture; midsole (M, vulcanized EVA foam) and outsole (O, vulcanized rubber blend of NR, SBR, and BR) were studied. The influence of various compatibilizers on the mechanical properties of these blends were investigated. Significant development of impact strength was attained by using 6 and 10 phr of styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene (SEBS) and maleic anhydride‐grafted styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene (SEBS‐g‐MA) as compatibilizers for both compounds filled with midsole and outsole dusts. The tensile strength of each compound was slightly decreased when the compatibilizer loading increased, whereas the elongation at break was significantly increased. The enhancements of the impact strength and the elongation at break are believed to arise from reduction of interfacial tension between two phases of the rubber and the PP, which results in some reduction of the particle size of the fillers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the evidence of the reduction of scrap rubber dust into small rubber particle sizes in the compound, and also showed the occurrence of some fibrils. Optical microscopy (crossed polars) observations suggested that the addition of the rubber dust resulted in a less regular spherulite texture and less sharp spherulite boundaries. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
