Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were amino‐functionalized by 1,2‐ethylenediamine (EDA)' triethylenetetramine (TETA), and dodecylamine (DDA), and investigated by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The dispersion of the DDA functionalized MWCNT in DMF is better than that of the MWCNT functionalized by the EDA and the TETA. Carbon nanotubes reinforced epoxy resin composites were prepared, and the effect of the amino‐functionalization on the properties of the composites was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA), and TGA. The composites reinforced by the MWCNTs demonstrate improvement in various mechanical properties. The increase of Tg of the composites with the addition of amino‐functionalized MWCNT compared to the Tg of the composites with the addition of unfunctionalized MWCNT was due to the chemical combination and the physical entanglements between amino group from modified MWNTs and epoxy group from the epoxy resin. The interfacial bonding between the epoxy and the amino group of the EDA and the TETA‐modified MWCNT is more important than the well dispersion of DDA‐modified MWCNT in the composites for the improvement of the mechanical properties. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amino‐functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was carried out by grafting triethylenetetramine (TETA) on the surfaces of MWCNTs through the acid–thionyl chloride way. The amino‐functionalized MWCNTs show improved compatibility with epoxy resin and, as a result, more homogenous dispersion in the matrix. The mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of the amino‐functionalized MWCNT/epoxy composites were also investigated. It was found that introducing the amino‐functionalized MWCNTs into epoxy resin greatly increased the charpy impact strength, glass transition temperature, and initial decomposing temperature of cured epoxy resin. In addition, introducing unfunctionalized MWCNTs into epoxy resin was found greatly depressing the light transmission properties, which would affirmatively confine the application of the MWCNTs/epoxy composites in the future, while much higher light transmittance than that of unfunctionalized MWCNTs/epoxy composites was found for amino‐functionalized MWCNTs/epoxy composites. SEM of the impact cross section and TEM of ultrathin film of the amino‐functionalized MWCNTs/epoxy composites showed that the amino‐functionalized MWCNTs were wetted well by epoxy matrix. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Plasma‐copolymerized functional coatings of acrylic acid and 1,7‐octadiene were deposited onto high strength, high modulus, poly‐p‐phenylene benzobisoxazole (PBO) fibers. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) with trifluoroethanol derivatization confirmed that the PBO fibers were covered completely with the plasma copolymer and that the coating contained a quantitative concentration of carboxylic acid groups. Microdebond single filament adhesion and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) tests were used to evaluate the interfacial strength of epoxy resin composites containing these functionalized PBO fibers. Both the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) obtained from single filament tests, and the ILSS of high volume fraction composites were a function of the surface functionality of the fibers so that there was a good correlation between ILSS and IFSS data. The tensile strengths of single fibers with or without coating were comparable, demonstrating that the fiber surface was not damaged in the plasma‐coating procedure. Indeed, the statistical analysis showed that Weibull modulus was increased. Therefore, plasma‐polymerized coatings can be used to control the interfacial bond between PBO fibers and matrix resins and act as a protective size for preserving the mechanical properties of the fibers. Epoxy resin was modified by adding a silane coupling agent/nano‐calcium carbonate master batch. Then, samples of binary carbon fiber/epoxy composites and ternary fiber/nano‐CaCO3/epoxy were prepared by hot press process. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the carbon fiber/epoxy composites was investigated and the results indicate that introduction of the treated nano‐CaCO3 enhances ILSS obviously. In particular, the addition of 4 wt% nano‐CaCO3 leads to 36.6% increase in the ILSS for the composite. The fracture surfaces of the carbon fiber/epoxy composites and the mechanical properties of epoxy resin cast are examined and both of them are employed to explain the change of ILSS. The results show that the change of ILSS is primarily due to an increase of the epoxy matrix strength and an increase of the fiber/epoxy interface. The bifurcation of propagating cracks, stress transfer, and cavitation are deduced for the reasons of strengthening and toughening effect of nano‐CaCO3 particles. POLYM. Four different types of composites were prepared based on unmodified and modified epoxy matrices: (A) unmodified epoxy/carbon fiber composites, (B) modified epoxy/carbon fiber composites by silane coupling agent/nano‐CaCO3 master batch, (C) modified epoxy/carbon fiber composites by nano‐CaCO3 particles directly, and (D) modified epoxy/carbon fiber composites by nano‐CaCO3 particles and silane coupling agent together. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the carbon fiber‐reinforced composites was investigated. The results show that the silane coupling agent/nano‐CaCO3 master batch can increase the ILSS to the highest degree. Nevertheless, Sample D, i.e., modified by nano‐CaCO3 particles and silane coupling agent together, even presents a decrease of the ILSS. The integration effect of silane coupling agent/nano‐CaCO3 master batch was concluded. POLYM. COMPOS., 2012. © 2012 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

This study is focused on the impact of oxygen plasma treatment on properties of carbon fibers and interfacial adhesion behavior between the carbon fibers and epoxy resin. The influences of the main parameters of plasma treatment process, including duration, power, and flow rate of oxygen gas were studied in detail using interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of carbon fiber composites. The ILSS of composites made of carbon fibers treated by oxygen plasma for 1 min, at power of 125 W, and oxygen flow rate of 100 sccm presented a maximum increase of 28% compared to composites made of untreated carbon fibers. Furthermore, carbon fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tensile strength test, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy analyses. It was found that the concentration of reactive functional groups on the fiber surface was increased after the plasma modification, as well the surface roughness, which finally improved the interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers and epoxy resin. However, high power and long exposure times could partly damage the surface of carbon fibers and decrease the tensile strength of filaments and ILSS of treated fiber composites.  相似文献

Carbon fiber‐reinforced epoxy composites (CFEC) are fabricated infusing up to 0.40 wt % amino‐functionalized XD‐grade carbon nanotubes (XDCNT) using the compression molding process. Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and thermomechanical properties of these composites are evaluated through short beam shear and dynamic–mechanical thermal analysis tests. XDCNTs are infused into Epon 862 resin using a mechanical stirrer followed by sonication. After the sonication, the mixture was placed in a three roll milling processor for three successive cycles at 140 rpm for uniform dispersion of CNTs. Epikure W curing agent was then added to the resin using a high‐speed mechanical stirrer. Finally, the fiber was reinforced with the modified resin using the compressive mold. ILSS was observed to increase by 22% at 0.3 wt % XDCNT loading. Thermal properties, including storage modulus, glass transition temperature, and crosslink density demonstrated linear enhancement up to the 0.3 wt % XDCNT loading. Scanning electron microscopy revealed better interfacial bonding in the CNT‐loaded CFEC. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 40709.  相似文献

In the present study, the mechanical and thermal properties of sisal fiber‐reinforced unsaturated polyester (UP)‐toughened epoxy composites were investigated. The sisal fibers were chemically treated with alkali (NaOH) and silane solutions in order to improve the interfacial interaction between fibers and matrix. The chemical composition of resins and fibers was identified by using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy. The UP‐toughened epoxy blends were obtained by mixing UP (5, 10, and 15 wt%) into the epoxy resin. The fiber‐reinforced composites were prepared by incorporating sisal fibers (10, 20, and 30 wt%) within the optimized UP‐toughened epoxy blend. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphological changes of the fibers and the adhesion between the fibers and the UP‐toughened epoxy system. The results showed that the tensile and flexural strength of (alkali‐silane)‐treated fiber (30 wt%) ‐reinforced composites increased by 83% and 55%, respectively, as compared with that of UP‐toughened epoxy blend. Moreover, thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the (alkali‐silane)‐treated fiber and its composite exhibited higher thermal stability than the untreated and alkali‐treated fiber systems. An increase in storage modulus and glass transition temperature was observed for the UP‐toughened epoxy matrix on reinforcement with treated fibers. The water uptake behavior of both alkali and alkali‐silane‐treated fiber‐reinforced composites is found to be less as compared with the untreated fiber‐reinforced composite. J. VINYL ADDIT. Carbon fiber‐reinforced epoxy composites, with incorporated carboxylic multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs), were prepared using vacuum‐assisted resin infusion (VARI) molding, and the in‐plane and out‐of‐plane properties, including mode‐I (GIc) and mode‐II (GIIc) interlaminar fracture toughness, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), tensile, and flexural properties were measured. A novel spraying technique, which sprays a kind of epoxy resin E20 with high viscosity after spraying the CNTs, was adopted to deposit the CNTs on the surface of carbon fiber fabric. The E20 was used to anchor CNTs on the fabric surface, avoiding that the deposited CNTs were removed by the infusing resin during VARI process. The spraying processing, including spraying amount and spraying sequence, was optimized based on the distribution of CNTs on the fibers. After that, three composite specimen groups were fabricated using different carbon fiber fabrics, including as‐received, CNT‐deposited with E20, and CNT‐deposited without E20. The effects of CNTs on the processing quality and mechanical properties of carbon fiber‐reinforced polymer composites were studied. The experimental results show that all studied laminates have uniform thickness with designed values and no obvious defects form inside the laminates. Compared with the composite without CNTs, depositing CNTs with E20 increases by 24% in the average propagation GIc, by 11% in the propagation GIIc and by 12% in the ILSS, while it preserves the in‐plane mechanical properties, However, depositing CNTs without E20 reduces interlaminar fracture toughness. These phenomena are attributed to the differences in the distribution of CNTs and the fiber/matrix interfacial bonding for different spraying processing. POLYM. Two surface modification methods—plasma surface treatment and chemical agent treatment—were used to investigate their effects on the surface properties of ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers. In the analyses, performed using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, changes in weight, and scanning electron microscope observations, demonstrated that the two fiber‐surface‐modified composites formed between UHMWPE fiber and epoxy matrix exhibited improved interfacial adhesion and slight improvements in tensile strengths, but notable decreases in elongation, relative to those properties of the composites reinforced with the untreated UHMWPE fibers. In addition, three kinds of epoxy resins—neat DGEBA, polyurethane‐crosslinked DGEBA, and BHHBP‐DGEBA—were used as resin matrices to examine the tensile and elongation properties of their UHMWPE fiber‐reinforced composites. From stress/strain measurements and scanning electron microscope observations, the resin matrix improved the tensile strength apparently, but did not affect the elongation. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The epoxy resin matrix of carbon fiber (CF)‐reinforced epoxy composites was modified with novolac resin (NR) to improve the matrix‐dominated mechanical properties of composites. Flexural strength, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and impact strength were measured with unfilled, 7 wt% NR, 13 wt% NR, and 18 wt% NR filled to epoxy to identify the effect of adding NR on the mechanical properties of composites. The results showed that both interfacial and impact properties of composites were improved except for flexural property. The largest improvement in ILSS and impact strength were obtained with 13 wt% loading of NR. ILSS and impact strength were improved by 7.3% and 38.6%, respectively, compared with the composite without NR. The fracture and surface morphologies of the composite specimens were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Intimate bonding of the fibers and the matrix was evident with the content of 7–13 wt% NR range. Decrease of crosslinking density and formation of NR transition layer were deduced with adding NR. In this work, effects of the interface modification on the carbon fiber‐reinforced epoxy composites were studied. For this purpose, the surface of carbon fibers were modified by oxygen plasma treatment. The surface characteristics of carbon fibers were studied by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), dynamic contact angle analysis (DCAA), and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), respectively. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) was also measured. XPS and AFM analyses indicated that the oxygen plasma treatment successfully increased some oxygen‐containing functional groups concentration on the carbon fiber surfaces, the surface roughness of carbon fibers was enhanced by plasma etching and oxidative reactions. DCAA and DMTA analyses show that the surface energy of carbon fibers increased 44.9% after plasma treatment for 3 min and the interfacial bonding intensities A and α also reached minimum and maximum value respectively. The composites exhibited the highest value of ILSS after oxgen plasma treated for 3 min.

Polyimide composites reinforced with short‐cut fibers such as carbon, glass, and quartz fibers were fabricated by the polymerization of monomer reactants process. The mechanical properties of the composites with different fiber contents were evaluated. The friction and wear properties of the polyimide and its composites were investigated under dry‐sliding and water‐lubricated conditions. The results indicated that the short‐carbon‐fiber‐reinforced polyimide composites had better tensile and flexural strengths and improved tribological properties in comparison with glass‐fiber‐ and quartz‐fiber‐reinforced polyimide composites. The incorporation of short carbon fibers into the polyimide contributed to decreases in the friction coefficient and wear rate under both dry and water‐lubricated conditions and especially under water lubrication because of the boundary lubrication effect of water. The polyimide and its composites were characterized by plastic deformation, microcracking, and spalling under both dry and water‐lubricated conditions, which were significantly abated under the water‐lubricated condition. The glass and quartz fibers were easily abraded and broken; the broken fibers transferred to the mating metal surface and increased the surface roughness of mating stainless steel, which led to the wear rate increasing for the glass‐fiber‐ and quartz‐fiber‐reinforced polyimide composites. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New composites based on carbon fiber (cf) and melamine‐formaldehyde (MF) are presented. Composites were manufactured by pressing stacked planar random veils (webs) or unidirectionally (UD) arranged fibers, and MF impregnated thin cellulose sheets. Non‐vented pressing for 60 s was used. Also, planar random, UD and bidirectional fiber composites with or without alumina trihydrate (ATH) were manufactured by conventional compression molding using much longer times (up to 20 min). Tensile strength of about 500 MPa and stiffness of 60 GPa was obtained for the UD composite containing 23 vol% fiber, and no ATH. Practically the same strength was measured for the bidirectional composite containing 46 vol% fiber and no ATH. Tensile strength and modulus of 130 MPa and 28 GPa, respectively, was obtained for the random fiber composite containing 16 vol% fiber. Measurements showed that replacement of ATH with cellulose in a composite containing 6 vol% carbon fibers increased the strength (2.5 times) without any penalty on stiffness, and increased strain at break. Cf‐MF interfacial strength is low. This was estimated for clean fibers by means of transverse tensile testing and in‐situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and for fibers with an epoxy compatible coating by using the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) test. The cf/MF/cellulose composite performed well up to 200°C. Within this temperature range it retained 80% of its stiffness compared to about 60% in the case of a representative epoxy with a higher content of carbon fibers.  相似文献

Milled carbon fiber‐reinforced polysulfide‐modified epoxy gradient composites have been developed. Density and hardness increases with the increase of carbon fiber content in the direction of centrifugal force, which shows the formation of gradient structure in the composite. High stress abrasive wear test was conducted on the gradient composites by using a Suga Abrasion Wear Tester. Abrasive wear rate reduced on increase of milled carbon fiber content from 0.15 to 1.66 vol%. Reduction in abrasive wear rate in milled carbon fiber‐reinforced epoxy gradient composites has been attributed to the increase of hardness, presence of random milled fibers, and debris of composite materials, which gave resistance and reduced wear rate. There is a small decrease in specific wear rate on adding 0.15 vol% milled carbon fibers. Further decrease of specific wear rate is observed on adding 0.45 vol% milled carbon fibers. After 3 N load, there is a decrease in specific wear rate behavior on adding 0.45 vol% carbon fibers, which further decreases on adding 0.60 vol% of carbon fibers. There is a remarkable decrease in specific wear rate up to 5 N load for 1.66 vol% milled carbon fiber‐reinforced composite. Reduction in specific wear rate on adding milled carbon fibers is based on the formation of debris, which remained intact in their respective positions due to the interfacial adhesion between milled carbon fibers and epoxy resin. The influences of different gravity environments on the curing process and the cured products of carbon‐nanotube‐reinforced epoxy composites were investigated in this study. Different gravity environments were simulated with a superconducting magnet on the basis of which resin matrix composites with different amino‐functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (NH2‐MWCNT) concentrations of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 1 wt % were tested. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermomechanical analysis (TMA), thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and three‐point bending tests were used to analyze the characteristics of different curing processes and cured products. From the results, we observed that the curing rate of the epoxy composites was influenced by different gravity values, and there was anisotropy in the NH2‐MWCNT‐reinforced epoxy composites cured in the simulated microgravity environment. More effects of gravity on the curing process and cured products could be obtained through detailed experiments and discussion; this is important and fundamental for improving and enhancing the properties of composite materials used in different gravity environments. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The overall mechanical performance of glass–carbon hybrid fibers reinforced epoxy composites depends heavily upon fiber–matrix interfacial properties and the service temperatures. Fiber‐bundle pull‐out tests of glass (GF) and/or carbon fiber (CF) reinforced epoxy composites were carried out at room and elevated temperatures. Graphene nanoplatelets were added in the interfacial region to investigate their influence on the interfacial shear strength (IFSS). Results show that IFSS of specimens with fiber‐bundle number ratio of GF:CF = 1:2 is the largest among the hybrid composites, and a positive hybridization effect is found at elevated temperatures. IFSS of all the specimens decreases with the increasing of test temperatures, while the toughness shows a contrary tendency. As verified by scanning electron microscopy observations, graphene nanoplatelets on fiber surface could enhance the IFSS of pure glass/carbon and hybrid fibers reinforced epoxy composites at higher temperatures significantly. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
