Three experiments were conducted to identify species-specific sign stimuli sufficient to elicit copulatory behavior in male Japanese quail and to determine how learning is involved in the control of behavior by these sign stimuli. In Exp 1, sexually experienced Ss were tested for copulatory behavior with a live female quail and with a model consisting of a female quail's head and neck mounted in front of a foam pad. Comparable levels of copulatory behavior were observed in the two tests, indicating that static visual cues provided by a female quail's head and neck are sufficient to elicit copulatory behavior in this species. Exp 2 showed that male birds that previously received numerous opportunities to copulate with a live female quail in the test situation were significantly more likely to copulate with the head?+?neck model than were sexually inexperienced Ss. Exp 3 showed that prior sexual experience with live quail facilitated responding to the head?+?neck model only if the sexual experience was provided in the same place where Ss were later tested with the model. This finding suggests that sexual experience facilitates control of copulatory behavior by species-specific sign stimuli through contextual conditioning. Sexually experienced male quail (Coturnix japonica) are more likely to engage in copulatory behavior than sexually naive ones. These experiments suggest that sexual experience in a particular place may facilitate later copulatory responding because of increased familiarity with the contextual cues of the environment. Male quail in Exp 1 did not copulate reliably with taxidermic models of females in a novel context, even though some of the subjects were allowed to copulate with female quail in their home cages. In contrast, sexually naive males in Exps 2 and 3 copulated vigorously with taxidermic models of females in a familiar context. In Exp 4, sexually naive males tested in an unfamiliar context were more likely to copulate with a moving than with a static model. The stimulus control of copulatory behavior in sexually naive male quail was similar to that in sexually experienced ones but only in familiar contexts. Adult male and female Japanese quail were functionally castrated by exposure to a short photoperiod and then injected with either estradiole benzoate (EB) or testosterone propionate (TP). Females injected with EB (n = 24) exhibited normal sexual receptivity again but displayed no male courtship behavior. Males injected with EB (n = 10) showed both male and female copulatory patterns. Females injected with TP (n = 14) showed little sexual behavior of any sort, while males injected with TP (n = 10) displayed male sexual behavior. The male quail is thus more bisexual than the female. In contrast with mammalian species, the female is more bisexual. Experiment 1 demonstrated that the social proximity behavior of male Japanese quail declines significantly when photostimulation is restricted to 2 hr daily, but can be restored by reinstituting the normal schedule. Changes in the photoperiod produced corresponding changes in the size of the cloacal gland, an androgen-dependent organ. The low levels of social proximity behavior and cloacal gland size of males maintained on short daily exposures to light also could be reversed by sc implants of testosterone (Experiment 2), and this recovery was to some extent sensitive to testosterone dose (Experiment 3). The present studies indicate that social proximity behavior in male Japanese quail is androgen dependent and provide a behavioral assay for neurohormonal studies of sexual behavior that does not depend on brief phasic responses. Two experiments were carried out during which the noradrenergic neurotoxin, 5-amino-2,4-dihydroxy-alpha-methylphenylethylamine (5-ADMP) was applied to the brain of quail in order to evaluate the role of the noradrenergic system in the control of male copulatory behavior. In the first experiment, the ICV injection of 5-ADMP slightly enhanced the sexual behavior observed in testosterone (T)-treated castrated male quail. This brings additional support to the notion that norepinephrine tonically inhibits male copulatory behavior in quail. In the second experiment, 5-ADMP implanted directly into the preoptic area disrupted the restoration by T of copulatory behavior in castrated quail and, at the same time, produced a brain lesion that partly destroyed the sexually dimorphic medial preoptic nucleus, a previously established site of T action on behavior. These lesions produced by a high (presumably too high) concentration of neurotoxin provided an independent confirmation of effects previously observed after electrolytic lesions. Correlation analyses also confirmed that the medial part of the POM just rostral to the anterior commissure is more closely associated with copulatory behavior and may, therefore, represent a key center for steroid action on this behavior.  相似文献

Two experiments investigated the role of estrogens in the activation and sexual differentiation of appetitive sexual behavior (ASB) in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) as measured by a learned social proximity response. Injection of the aromatase inhibitor R767 13 in castrated, testosterone (T)-treated male quail completely suppressed ASB, confirming that, like consummatory sexual behavior, ASB is mediated by T aromatization. ASB is not observed in female quail, even if they are treated with T as adults. The role of embryonic estrogens in the sexual differentiation of ASB was tested by blocking estrogen synthesis in ovo. Control male and T-treated female quail deprived of estrogens during embryonic life learned the social proximity response used to assess ASB, whereas control female quail did not, despite the presence of high T. Thus, ASB is demasculinized by the action of embryonic estrogens during ontogeny as is consummatory behavior.  相似文献

In 3 studies, a localized visual stimulus presented immediately prior to access to a female conspecific stimulated approach behavior in male Japanese quail after several conditioning trials. Development of this conditioned approach behavior was observed with 2 types of signal lights, 10- and 30-sec signal durations, large and small experimental chambers, and with male Ss housed continually in the conditioning chambers or only placed in the chamber for brief daily sessions. Conditioning also resulted in shorter latencies to initiate copulation in males given access to a female following the signal light, in comparison with males that received access to a female unannounced by the light. Although some aspects of the conditioning experience were retained over a 6-wk interval, some loss of the behavior was also observed. The conditioned behavior also decreased with repeated extinction trials, during which the signal light was presented in the absence of access to a female conspecific. The conditioned responses of male and female Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) were compared in a Pavlovian conditioning procedure in which presentation of a brief conditioned stimulus was immediately followed by the release of a copulation partner. Male quail vigorously approached the conditioned stimulus and were much more likely to enter the compartment housing their copulation partner than were female birds (Experiment 1). In females, sexual conditioning resulted in increased squatting (Experiment 2). This response was the reflection of sexual behavior rather than more general social behavior (Experiment 3). These findings provide the first definitive evidence of sexual learning in female quail and are consistent with the interpretation that sexual conditioning increases sexual arousal or receptivity in both sexes but the increase has different behavioral manifestations in male and female quail. This study attemped to isolate some of the stimulus variables that controlled the self-destructive behavior of a psychotic child. In Experiment 1, the child was exposed to several demand and nondemand situations. In Experiment 2, the situation containing demands was modified so that demands now occurred in the context of a positive, ongoing interaction between the child and the adult therapist. The rates of self-destructive behavior underwent several orderly changes: (1) Rates were high in demand situations and low in nondemand and modifieddemand situations; (2) rates decreased sharply when a stimulus correlated with the termination of demands was introduced; and (3) rates of self-destruction typically showed gradual increases within each of those sessions which contained only demands. These results were interpreted as suggesting that (1) self-destruction, under certain circumstances, may be conceptualized as an escape response which is negatively reinforced by the termination of a demand situation and (2) certain modifications of the social environment may provide discriminative stimuli for behaviors other than self-destruction, thereby decreasing this behavior.  相似文献

The authors investigated the behavioral actions of vasotocin (VT) in castrated testosterone-treated male Japanese quail. The appetitive and consummatory components of sexual behavior as well as the occurrence frequency of crows were inhibited, in a dose-dependent manner, by injections of VT. The authors observed opposite effects after injection of the V1 receptor antagonist, dPTyr(Me)AVP. Lower doses of VT were more active after central than after systemic injection, and effects of systemic injections of VT were blocked by a central injection of dPTyr(Me)AVP. The behavioral inhibition was associated with a modified diuresis after systemic but not central injection. These results provide direct evidence that VT affects male sexual behavior in quail by a direct action on the brain independent of its peripheral action on diuresis. In Exp I, 8 sexually deprived male Japanese quail were exposed to 1 of 7 female Japanese quail until they satisfied a 20-min sexual satiation criterion. The female was then replaced with a novel female or was allowed to remain in the test cage undisturbed. Introduction of the novel female did not reinvigorate sexual behavior above levels observed when the female was allowed to remain undisturbed. In Exp II, with 9 males and 15 females, males that were not sexually deprived were tested in the presence of 2 females. During experimental tests, 1 of the females was novel and the other was familiar. During control tests, both of the females were familiar. The presence of a novel female increased overall levels of male sexual behavior and also increased the number of males engaged in reproductive behavior. However, the enhanced sexual behavior was not differentially directed toward the novel or familiar female. Implications of these findings for the mating system of Japanese quail and for studies of the role of novelty in sexual behavior are discussed. Conducted 2 experiments on the ability of different sex steroids to stimulate crowing, strutting, and copulation. Exp I with 32 male Japanese quail was designed to maximize crowing. Intact untreated males and castrated males treated with 2 dosages of testosterone propionate (TP), with 2 dosages of dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP), or with oil were tested. The DHTP-treated males crowed extensively; TP-treated males crowed, but to a lesser extent than DHTP-treated males. In Exp II (30 Ss), which was designed to maximize strutting and copulation, males with photically regressed testes were treated with DHTP, DHTP?+?estradiol benzoate (EB), or EB alone and were tested with female partners. The DHTP-treated males did not copulate, but 2 birds strutted. The EB-treated males copulated but did not strut. Males receiving DHTP?+?EB strutted and copulated. These results suggest that (a) copulation in quail may involve conversion of testosterone to estrogen by the brain; (b) crowing and strutting may involve conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone by the brain; and (c) in quail, the different components of male reproductive behavior show divergent patterns of hormone responsiveness, and thus the neural tissues underlying these behaviors have different molecular requirements for activation by steroids. A bidirectional replicated selection experiment for high (H1 and H2) or low (L1 and L2) cumulative number of complete matings (CNCM) in male Japanese quail was conducted for 40 generations. In the S32 generation, a subline was taken from each selected line and selection was relaxed. In the randombred control line (C), CNCM and unselected traits changed significantly over generations. Means of the selected lines were adjusted each generation for deviations from the control means. After 40 generations of selection, there was a 21-fold difference in CNCM (59.4 vs 2.8) between Lines H1 and L1. Whereas means increased and variation decreased in the high lines, means decreased and variation increased in the low lines. Regressions of mean CNCM on generation of Lines H1, H2, L1, and L2 were 1.15 +/- 0.08, 0.61 +/- 0.08, -0.26 +/- 0.04, and -0.34 +/- 0.03, respectively. Although responses to selection were observed throughout the 40 generations in Line H1, the low lines appeared to have reached a limit to selection after the S30 generation. Relaxed lines provided supporting evidence for this conclusion. Mean CNCM decreased in the relaxed high lines to that of the control, whereas the low relaxed lines remained at the same level as their corresponding selected lines. Line H2 went into extinction in the 37th generation as a result of reduced fitness. Realized heritabilities of CNCM were 0.09, 0.07, 0.06, and -0.15 in Lines H1, H2, L1, and L2, respectively. As correlated responses to the selection, male quail in the high lines were heavier, exhibited greater relative aggressiveness, and had larger cloacal glands than those of the control and low lines.  相似文献

The Japanese quail is a precocial species, and because of its relatively rapid development, sexual maturation in about 40 days after hatching, and prolific breeding capacity, it promises to become an organism well suited for avian research. One stumbling block has been the inability to induce, with any consistency, parental behavior in laboratory stocks. The study reported herein demonstrates a method for establishing a self-perpetuating population under seminaturalistic conditions. In addition, given the limitions of finite space, chick mortality appears to have been mostly density dependent, thus indicating that the increase in the size of the population is circumscribed in part by population density.  相似文献

Male Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) were trained individually to discriminate between 2 sounds presented at opposite ends of an outdoor aviary. One of the sounds (the positive conditioned stimulus [CS+]) was associated with the release of a female, and the other (the negative CS [CS–]) was presented alone. Which of the 2 sounds served as the CS+ (and which served as the CS–) was counterbalanced across Ss. The Ss came to approach their CS+ but did not move away from their CS–. After having been conditioned individually, the subjects were tested in pairs, with a single female released after the presentation of a stimulus that was the CS+ for one of the males and the CS– for the other male. During most of these tests, the male for whom the prefemale stimulus was the CS+ copulated with the female before the male for whom the prefemale stimulus was the CS–. The effect of the environment in which sexual experience is acquired was examined on patterns of male rat copulatory behavior. Males trained in a pacing chamber with a 4-hole partition had significantly shorter ejaculation latencies compared with males trained in chambers with a 1-hole partition. Those differences persisted when males were switched into the other pacing condition, suggesting that the pattern of copulation in these males had become "fixed." In the second experiment, males were trained to associate an almond odor with copulation in either the 1-hole or 4-hole condition. Males ejaculated preferentially with females associated with the 4-hole pacing condition. Copulatory behavior in male rats is sensitive to female availability, and females associated with greater availability are preferred. Studied the copulatory behavior of 36 5-, 10-, 15-, and 20-mo old sexually naive male Long-Evans rats during 2-hr tests with receptive females. There was no apparent change in sexual arousal as measured by latency to initiate copulation across age, with Ss from all groups exhibiting comparable latencies to 1st mount and 1st mount with intromission. The numbers of ejaculations achieved were also similar across ages. Significant age differences were found for frequency of mounts, with 20-mo olds having the highest mean frequency. The persistent mounting by older Ss appeared to account for significant group differences in interintromission interval and ejaculation latency. It is suggested that motor deficits may impair the ability of older Ss to achieve intromission, increasing the number of mount bouts as well as the number of mounts for each bout, thus extending the length of each copulatory series. The present study investigated the effects of chronic pre-exposure to methamphetamine on sexual motivation and performance in male Japanese quail. Quail were pre-exposed to methamphetamine (1.0 or 3.0 mg/kg ip) or saline (ip) once daily for 10 days and locomotor activity was measured. After a 10 day washout period, sexual motivation was measured in a straight-arm runway with visual access to a female at one end. Three to 5 hr after sexual motivation tests, males were allowed to copulate with a receptive female quail and copulatory behavior was assessed. Tests were conducted once per day for 10 days. Results showed that males pre-exposed to methamphetamine had decreased locomotor activity compared to saline controls. Males pre-exposed to METH later ran slower toward a female in the runway and spent less time near her. In contrast, methamphetamine pre-exposed males showed similar copulatory behavior as saline pre-exposed males. The findings suggest that chronic pre-exposure to methamphetamine may impair sexual motivation but not sexual performance. We investigated how male Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) learn through extensive social and sexual experience to discriminate between male and female conspecifics. Opportunity for heterosexual copulation was important for this learning, but even extensive copulatory opportunity was not sufficient to produce a sexual discrimination; subjects also required exposure to other males. Exposure to females after copulatory opportunity did not produce a sexual discrimination but facilitated its acquisition. Time or exposure to only the visual features of male birds (provided by taxidermic models) after copulatory opportunity did not result in differential responding to male and female conspecifics. Finally, presenting stimulus birds one at a time proved to be a more sensitive test of sexual-discrimination learning than presenting two stimulus birds at the same time. Examined the influence of testosterone (T), a 5-alpha-reduced metabolite of T (dihydrotestosterone), and an aromatized metabolite of T (estradiol) on 35-kHz ultrasonic calling and copulatory behavior by 72 male deer mice. Daily treatment with T propionate (TP), dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP), or estradiol benzoate (EB) restored ultrasonic calling in long-term castrated Ss. Both TP and DHTP restored copulatory behavior, but EB was ineffective. Synergism of EB and DHTP action was observed; when subthreshold doses of EB (1 μg/day) and DHTP (50 μg/day) were administered in combination, ultrasonic calling and copulatory behavior were activated. In relation to other comparative findings, results indicate that the degree to which male sexual behavior is facilitated by 5-alpha-reduced androgens and/or estrogens is influenced by the species and the particular pattern of masculine behavior under consideration.
