This work presents a modified TSR model of the nitric oxide/hydrogen fuel cell operating in potentiostatic mode with the co-current flow direction. The developed model accounts for the component and the energy balances in gas channels, liquid catholyte and catalyst layers together with charge balances at electrode/electrolyte interfaces. The simulation results indicate the influence of catalyst selectivity and mass transfer on the distribution of concentration, temperature and current density. 相似文献

This work presents a Tank in Series Reactor (TSR) model for the alkaline fuel cell operating in potentiostatic mode in cogeneration of H2O2 and electricity. The developed TSR model accounts for the component and the energy balances in gas channels, liquid alkaline and catalyst layers together with charge balances at electrode/electrolyte interfaces. The TSR model is able to predict the limiting two-dimensional profiles in alkaline fuel cell. The simulation results indicate the influence of mass transfer on the distribution of concentration, temperature and current density. 相似文献

Three-dimensional Reticulated trapezoidal flow field (RTFF) is promising in improving the performance and durability of the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). However, the structural complexity makes it challenging for the geometry configuration of the splitter and mixer. To this end, an intelligent optimization framework is proposed by coupling artificial neural network (ANN) and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II), in order to maximize the net power density and oxygen uniformity simultaneously. The ANN prediction model is trained to obtain the computationally efficient surrogate model of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation. NSGA-II is used for the multi-objective optimization of the RTFF structural parameters. The results illustrate that the prediction model is of high prediction precision and generalization capability. In comparison to SOFC with conventional parallel flow fields (CPFF), the degree of the performance improvement of SOFC with optimized RTFF depends on the working condition, i.e., fuel and air flow rates and operating temperatures. The SOFC with the optimal RTFF achieves a higher molar concentration of oxygen and a more uniform distribution of oxygen and current density than the CPFF SOFC. The proposed optimization framework provides an efficient design method for the development of the next-generation SOFC flow field. 相似文献

An appropriate flow field in the bipolar plates of a fuel cell can effectively enhance the reactant transport rates and liquid water removal efficiency, improving cell performance. This paper proposes a novel serpentine-baffle flow field (SBFF) design to improve the cell performance compared to that for a conventional serpentine flow field (SFF). A three-dimensional model is used to analyze the reactant and product transport and the electrochemical reactions in the cell. The results show that at high operating voltages, the conventional design and the baffled design have the same performance, because the electrochemical rate is low and only a small amount of oxygen is consumed, so the oxygen transport rates for both designs are sufficient to maintain the reaction rates. However, at low operating voltages, the baffled design shows better performance than the conventional design. Analyses of the local transport phenomena in the cell indicate that the baffled design induces larger pressure differences between adjacent flow channels over the entire electrode surface than does the conventional design, enhancing under-rib convection through the electrode porous layer. The under-rib convection increases the mass transport rates of the reactants and products to and from the catalyst layer and reduces the amount of liquid water trapped in the porous electrode. The baffled design increases the limiting current density and improves the cell performance relative to conventional design. 相似文献

The cathode flow-field design of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) determines its reactant transport rates to the catalyst layer and removal rates of liquid water from the cell. This study optimizes the cathode flow field for a single serpentine PEM fuel cell with 5 channels using the heights of channels 2–5 as search parameters. This work describes an optimization approach that integrates the simplified conjugated-gradient scheme and a three-dimensional, two-phase, non-isothermal fuel cell model. The proposed optimal serpentine design, which is composed of three tapered channels (channels 2–4) and a final diverging channel (channel 5), increases cell output power by 11.9% over that of a cell with straight channels. These tapered channels enhance main channel flow and sub-rib convection, both increasing the local oxygen transport rate and, hence, local electrical current density. A diverging, final channel is preferred, conversely, to minimize reactant leakage to the outlet. The proposed combined approach is effective in optimizing the cathode flow-field design for a single serpentine PEMFC. The role of sub-rib convection on cell performance is demonstrated. 相似文献

A utilized regenerative solid oxide fuel cell (URSOFC) provides the dual function of performing energy storage and power generation, all in one unit. When functioning as an energy storage device, the URSOFC acts like a solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) in water electrolysis mode; whereby the electric energy is stored as (electrolyzied) hydrogen and oxygen gases. While hydrogen is useful as a transportation fuel and in other industrial applications, the URSOFC also acts as a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) in power generation mode to produce electricity when needed. The URSOFC would be a competitive technology in the upcoming hydrogen economy on the basis of its low cost, simple structure, and high efficiency. This paper reports on the design and manufacturing of its anode support cell using commercially available materials. Also reported are the resulting performance, both in electrolysis and fuel cell modes, as a function of its operating parameters such as temperature and current density. We found that the URSOFC performance improved with increasing temperature and its fuel cell mode had a better performance than its electrolysis mode due to a limited humidity inlet causing concentration polarization. In addition, there were great improvements in performance for both the SOFC and SOEC modes after the first test and could be attributed to an increase in porosity within the oxygen electrode, which was beneficial for the oxygen reaction. 相似文献

Finite element analysis is an effective method to investigate the uniformity of species distribution in solid oxide fuel cells. This paper presents a 3-D model with coupled mass transport, electron transfer and electrochemical reaction. Based on a working anode-supported SOFC with gas channels and porous electrodes, the model is validated by measured IV curves. The simulated results deviate no more than 3% from the measured data and indicate significant dependency of current density distribution on the gas composition distribution. Meanwhile, the simulated results also indicate that the ridges of the interconnect have negative effects on electrochemical reaction due to the limitation of mass transport. In further study, cases of various channel widths are calculated and analyzed, finding that the optimal width ratios for electrochemical in cathode and anode are 0.5. 相似文献

This paper reports a novel process for simultaneous power generation and green treatment of plastic waste by a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) integrated with pyrolysis-gasification processes. With an electrolyte-supported configuration, the SOFC delivers a power output of 71 mW cm−2 at 800 °C, which is improved to 280 mW cm−2 after applying reforming catalyst. The microstructures and properties of the reforming catalyst before and after operation, the components of the pyrolysis products of plastic waste, and the mechanism and effect of the reforming catalyst to the SOFC are analysed and discussed in detail. In addition, carbon nanotubes are observed in the catalytic pyrolysis of plastic waste, suggesting it is also a potential technology for electricity-carbon nanotube cogeneration. This work demonstrates the feasibility of SOFCs for electricity-carbon nanotube cogeneration and green treatments of municipal solid wastes simultaneously. 相似文献

This paper presents exergy analysis of a conceptualized combined cogeneration plant that employs pressurized oxygen blown coal gasifier and high‐temperature, high‐pressure solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) in the topping cycle and a bottoming steam cogeneration cycle. Useful heat is supplied by the pass‐out steam from the steam turbine and also by the steam raised separately in an evaporator placed in the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). Exergy analysis shows that major part of plant exergy destruction takes place in gasifier and SOFC while considerable losses are also attributed to gas cooler, combustion chamber and HRSG. Exergy losses are found to decrease with increasing pressure ratio across the gas turbine for all of these components except the gas cooler. The fuel cell operating temperature influences the performance of the equipment placed downstream of SOFC. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

To further develop solid oxide regenerative fuel cell (SORFC) technology, the effect of gas diffusion in the hydrogen electrode on the performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) is investigated. The hydrogen electrode-supported cells are fabricated and tested under various operating conditions in both the power generation and hydrogen production modes. A transport model based on the dusty-gas model is developed to analyze the multi-component diffusion process in the porous media, and the transport parameters are obtained by applying the experimentally measured limiting current data to the model. The structural parameters of the porous electrode, such as porosity and tortuosity, are derived using the Chapman–Enskogg model and microstructural image analysis. The performance of an SOEC is strongly influenced by the gas diffusion limitation at the hydrogen electrode, and the limiting current density of an SOEC is substantially lower than that of an SOFC for the standard cell structure under normal operating conditions. The pore structure of the hydrogen electrode is optimized by using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), a pore-forming agent, and consequently, the hydrogen production rate of the SOEC is improved by a factor of greater than two under moderate humidity conditions. 相似文献

Design-point and part-load characteristics of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system, fuelled by methane and hydrogen, are investigated for its prospective use in the residential application. As a part of this activity, a detailed SOFC cell model is developed, evaluated and extended to a stack model. Models of all the required balance of plant components are also developed and are integrated to build a system model. Using this model, two system base cases for methane and hydrogen fuels are introduced. Cogeneration relevant performance figures are investigated for different system configurations and cell parameters i.e. fuel utilization, fuel flow rate, operation voltage and extent of internal fuel reforming. The results show high combined heat and power efficiencies for both cases, with higher thermal-to-electric ratio and lower electric efficiency for the hydrogen-fuelled cases. Performance improvements with radiation air pre-heaters and anode gas recycling are presented and the respective application limits discussed. 相似文献

We proposed and tested a new and novel arrangement for a direct methanol fuel cell consisting of one inlet for a methanol solution and four outlets for oxidant gas (air), in both the anode and cathode flow fields. It utilizes different operating temperatures of 40 °C and 60 °C, and different methanol solution flow rates of 5 ml min−1, 10 ml min−1, and 20 ml min−1. Test results indicate a significant reduction in produced CO2 gas in the anode flow channels and product water in the cathode flow channels; consequently, cell performance can be greatly improved. Furthermore, methanol crossover can also be avoided and reduced. 相似文献

In a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) water management is one of the critical issues to be addressed. Although the membrane requires humidification for high proton conductivity, water in excess decreases the cell performance by flooding. In this paper an improved strategy for water management in a fuel cell operating with low water content is proposed using a parallel serpentine-baffle flow field plate (PSBFFP) design compared to the parallel serpentine flow field plate (PSFFP). The water management in a fuel cell is closely connected to the temperature control in the fuel cell and gases humidifier. The PSBFFP and the PSFFP were evaluated comparatively under three different humidity conditions and their influence on the PEMFC prototype performance was monitored by determining the current density–voltage and current density–power curves. Under low humidification conditions the PEMFC prototype presented better performance when fitted with the PSBFFP since it retains water in the flow field channels. 相似文献

The design of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) using biogas for distributed power generation is a promising alternative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the energy and waste management sectors. Furthermore, the high efficiency of SOFCs in conjunction with the possibility to produce hydrogen may be a financially attractive option for biogas plants. However, the influence of design variables in the optimization of revenues and efficiency has seldom been studied for these novel cogeneration systems. Thus, in order to fulfill this knowledge gap, a multi-objective optimization problem using the NSGA-II algorithm is proposed to evaluate optimal solutions for systems producing hydrogen and electricity from biogas. Moreover, a mixed-integer linear optimization routine is used to ensure an efficient heat recovery system with minimal number of heat exchanger units. The results indicate that hydrogen production with a fuel cell downstream is able to achieve high exergy efficiencies (65–66%) and a drastic improvement in net present value (1346%) compared with sole power generation. Despite the additional equipment, the investment costs are estimated to be quite similar (12% increase) to conventional steam reforming systems and the levelized cost of hydrogen is very competitive (2.27 USD/kgH2). 相似文献

This study presents a novel interconnector design, termed groove and rib-finned interconnector, to improve the performance of the planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). We have conducted a detailed comparative study on the flow characteristics and electrical performance of conventional straight channel interconnectors and novel interconnectors through a three-dimensional model. Compared with the conventional straight channel interconnector, the result shows that the novel interconnector can provide higher fuel utilization, and the output power density at a low fuel flow is still higher than that of the conventional design at a high fuel flow. The novel interconnector increases the velocity and vorticity of the reactant gas, and promotes gas disturbance, and enhances the mass transport in the electrode. The novel interconnector eliminates the oxygen-free zone of the cathode under the rib and provides sufficient oxygen with uniform concentration distribution for the electrochemical reaction. Therefore, the novel interconnector significantly reduces the activation and concentration overpotentials and improves the electrical performance of the SOFC stack. 相似文献

The present work investigates the effects of the temperature and thermal stress distributions in a planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) unit cell. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis of a planar anode-supported SOFC that considers electrochemical reactions is performed, and the thermal stresses are calculated. The static friction coefficients are assumed to range from 0.05 to 0.3, and conservatively, a perfectly bonded condition is assumed. The results show that the electrolyte is the weakest component and has the maximum stress because the electrolyte is the thinnest and the Young modulus is the highest. Thus, the contact between the anode electrode and the electrolyte, and between the cathode electrode and the electrolyte, would be the perfectly bonded condition. As a result, this research showed that the stresses induced by constraint forces with various contact conditions were dominant for the structural stability in a SOFC. Therefore, static friction coefficients on operative high temperature conditions are important to predict the structural integrity in a SOFC, and they will be investigated in future works in order to improve the structural stability in a stack design as well as in a SOFC. 相似文献

In this work, we presented the novel anode flow field for direct dimethyl ether fuel cell (DDFC). The anode flow field of the DDFC consisted of hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and diffusion region (with a ratio of region areas of 3:6:1). The maximum power density of the DDFC with novel anode flow field was 67 mW cm−2, which was higher than that of the cell fed with conventional flow field (60 mW cm−2). The electrochemical impedance spectra analyses revealed that the mass transfer resistance of novel anode flow field was lower than that of conventional flow field. The constant current operation curves showed that the performance decay ratio of the novel anode flow field was lower than that of conventional one. It indicated that the novel flow field benefited the long-term operation of DDFC. 相似文献

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are considered an important technology in terms of high efficiency and clean energy generation. Flat-tubular solid oxide fuel cell (FT-SOFC) which is a combination of tubular and planar cell geometries stands out with its performance values and low costs. In this study, the performance of an FT-SOFC is analyzed numerically by using finite element method-based design as a result of changing parameters by using different fuels which are pure hydrogen and coal gas with various proportions of CO. In addition, cell performance values for different temperatures were analyzed and interpreted. Analyzes have been performed by using COMSOL Multiphysics software. The rates of CO composition used are 10%, 20%, and 40%, respectively. In addition, the air was used as the oxidizer in all cases. The cell voltage and average cell power of the FT-SOFC were examined under the 800 °C operating condition. The maximum power value and current density value were obtained as 710 W/m2 and 1420 A/m2 for the flat-tubular cell, respectively. As a result of the study, it was observed that the maximum cell power densities increased with increasing temperature. Analysis results showed that FT-SOFCs have suitable properties for different fuel usage and different operating temperatures. High-performance values and design features in different operating conditions are expected to make FT-SOFC the focus of many studies in the future. 相似文献
