A new five year program in electrical engineering and management is described. This unique undergraduate program provides the student with a firm foundation in both engineering science and management studies. Its graduates are eligible for registration as professional engineers after engineering experience as well as qualified to write the Chartered Accountants' examination after an articling period. There exists a need, in undergraduate microwave engineering courses, for a simple analysis program similar to ECAP, but which is applicable to distributed circuits. Such a program has been developed at the University of Maine, Orono to analyze a network of cascaded two-ports with the possibility of one feedback path. This configuration, while not the most general, will encompass nearly all networks encountered in an undergraduate course. It is also fast and very easy to use. Some examples of its use are given. Student response was very favorable and it is concluded that some sort of analysis program should be used in an undergraduate microwave engineering course.  相似文献

The program in electric power engineering at Iowa State University provides opportunity for study at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Such a program depends strongly upon the presence of a faculty who are competent and interested in power. It has been possible to attract such a faculty at Iowa State because of the University's excellent policy of providing both teaching and research opportunities. This makes it easier to find research support and to provide increased opportunity for graduate study. The graduate program is also aided by a unique undergraduate program in power which consistently attracts a large fraction of each class.  相似文献

Attracting high quality students to study microwave engineering has been difficult in recent years because the glamour fields of computer engineering and computer science have attracted many students away from the more traditional disciplines of electrical engineering. At the same time, the need for microwave engineers in both the commuications and aerospace industries has increased as the role of microwave technology has become more important in these businesses. This paper provides a model for an educational program which can be developed in a specialized area to quickly alleviate the shortage of a critical engineering skill in a timely and effective manner. It further describes the synergistic growth in microwave research and the catalyzation of microwave industry interaction which have occurred at the University of Massachusetts. Moreover, it describes the recruiting benefits to the sponsoring organization, Raytheon Company, and to many of its local subcontractors due to the increased stimulation of undergraduate interest in microwave engineering manifested by a tripling over a two year period of the number of electrical engineering graduates having a concentration in microwaves.  相似文献

In the fall of 1969 a systematic reorganization of the EE laboratory program was begun at Purdue University. The reorganization was approached using an educational system model which recognized the needs for: clear statements of instructional objectives, mechanisms for information transfer, opportunities to practice, and apply new skills, the personal dimension of education and evaluation procedures. A second educational model, essentially orthogonal to the one above, based on Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives was used to plan the degree to which various skills and activities should be stressed in each course. The educational methodologies used in developing the program and the end product of this effort are described.  相似文献

Few formal programs have been developed with the specific goals of enabling faculty members to further their education in new and developing technical areas and to work towards advanced degrees in a planned sequence of summer courses. A summer graduate program for electrical engineering teachers was instituted in 1962 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute as a result of many months of discussion in the ASEE Division of Electrical Engineering of how best to serve a critical continuing education need of faculty members, particularly in the smaller and sometimes isolated engineering schools of the nation. In six years of operation, the summer graduate program has enrolled 91 students from 71 different schools in 31 states, Puerto Rico, and five foreign countries. Many participants had no specific degree goals. However, in this period six have completed M. S. degrees and seven have earned a Ph.D. degree. Twelve additional faculty members are well along on their doctoral programs. Most doctoral students spend at least a year on the Worcester Polytechnic Institute campus doing their research, although provisions are made for their research to be done at their own schools in some cases. The upgrading accomplished by the program is evident from the jobs many of the participants accepted at the completion of their programs. The summer program is beginning to attract increasing numbers of participants from technically oriented junior colleges. The program concept is applicable to faculty members in most or all engineering disciplines.  相似文献

A highly successful cooperative program between the College of Engineering and the power industry plays an important role in power engineering education at Iowa State University. This paper describes the history, operation, student participation, and the effect on both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum of the Power Affiliate Research Program at Iowa State. An associated program, the Power System Computer Service, is also described and its educational impact on Iowa State and other institutions is evaluated.  相似文献

This paper describes a two semester design course for senior electrical engineering students. Small individual project designs are pursued during the first semester in conjunction with lectures on design related topics. In the current climate of shortages of high-quality engineering graduates, exacerbated by reduced high school enrollments in physics and mathematics, engineering faculties are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of K-12 outreach programs. Such programs can result in students being better prepared for and better informed about engineering careers, with a consequent increase in the number of engineering undergraduates. Almost all outreach programs described in the literature are school-based; by contrast, this paper describes a university-based program. The program was born out of a desire for a university department and a neighboring high school to forge closer links and a need for the high school to provide its students with certain laboratory experiences that would best be realized with the use of specialist equipment. The outreach program provides both formal laboratory experiences and informal presentations by graduate students of their research interests. Follow-up surveys showed that the high school students found the experiences both instructive and motivating, and their knowledge of and interest in electrical engineering increased significantly as a result. All final-year physics students from the high school took part in the 2007 outreach program, and 42% of these students subsequently enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering degree at the university in 2008.   相似文献

The development, methodologies, and first semester implementation of a senior level digital computer laboratory course are discussed. The laboratory centers around the use of a minicomputer and permits dedicated minicomputer usage for real time on-line processing or time sharing as necessary. The experiments emphasize the areas of control and communications. Unique aspects of this course include its development as performed mainly by graduate students (directed by the authors), the nature of the experiments themselves, the relatively large amount of credit it is assigned, the fundamental place it occupies in the Systems and Computer Engineering Curriculum, and its rapid and positive acceptance by students. Future plans for additions to existing experiments, new experiments, modifications in operating systems format, and innovative teaching methods are also described.  相似文献

During the past few years, I have developed a couple dozen problems in Electrical Engineering which are somewhat unusual. The problems are written around a situation similar to case studies as employed in Business Schools. I try with some introductory comments to project the student into a "real life" situation and then lead him through a series of step-at-a-time solutions. One of the purposes of the situation problems is to heighten the student's interest and thereby increase his motivation. Additionally, the student learns to follow through a lengthy line of reasoning and related engineering design. Since the problems frequently require the full use of broad prior knowledge, the student learns to integrate together a number of subjects. In this respect, the problems help to augment his laboratory experience. The situation problems typically require a considerable amount of time both by the student in solving and by the instructor in grading. Occasionally, the problems are done in groups or as class exercises. The problem answers follow sequentially and initial errors are propagated. This is justified as being a "real life" experience and therefore valuable to the student in teaching him to work accurately The over-all student reaction has, I feel, been quite favorable. In discussing the solutions, the instructor has an opportunity to interpolate numerous comments, as appropriate, concerning analysis, approximations, and engineering design philosophy. The following situation problem on "Transistorized Low-Frequency Class C Amplifier" was recently prepared.  相似文献
