Stylistic Analysis of Percy Bysshe Shelley's “To a Skylark”

The main purpose of this paper is to examine and analyze Percy Bysshe Shelley's lyrical poem "To a Skylark", which embodies his profound poetic talent and attempts to explore how each element of the one poem formed its functions in the whole context through stylistic analysis way and provide an opportunity to better understand Shelley's poems that reflect his distinguished mental states and the social context in and out of his times.

Love Between the Lines——John Donne:A Valediction:Forbidding Mourning

John Donne began life as the son of a prosperous London merchant who died when he was only four. His mother, a strong Catholic and daughter of John Heywood, a well-known writer and dramatist. As a young boy, he was an excellent student, going to Oxford University at the age of 12 and possibly Cambridge later, as well as Lincoln's Inn, one of the law schools of the time.~([1]) He secretly married Lady Egerton's niece, seventeen-year-old Anne More, daughter of Sir George More. Donne dearly loved his wife, but they lived in relative poverty and difficult circumstances for a good many years. Donne wrote poetry all his life. In his 20 s and 30 s, he wrote some of his famous lyric poems, including the collections Satires and Songs and Sonnets. Donne is one of the most famous Metaphysical poets in the world. He came back into favor in the early twentieth century with the support of poet like T. S. Eliot and other modernists. Since then, he has maintained his position as one of the most admirable poets in British literature.~([2]) Donne's poetry embraces a wide range of secular and religious subjects. He wrote cynical verse about inconstancy, poems about true love, Neoplastic lyrics on the mystical union of lovers' souls and bodies and brilliant satires and hymns depicting his own spiritual struggles. In this paper,the author focus on two groups of comparisons to demonstrate her understanding. The first part is the different attitudes the laity and Donne take towards love. The second part is how the laity and Donne react when they are faced with separation.

The characteristics of the English and the Western Jin Metaphysical Poems——By analyzing A Valediction:Forbidding Mourning and the poem 14th of the Scholar Joining the Army

In the 17 th century, English literature is noted by the metaphysical poems. "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning"(hereinafter referred to as "A Valediction") is a metaphysical poem which is based on the theme of two lovers about to part for an extended time written by the famous poet John Donne. "A Valediction" is known for its conceits and analogies to describe the couple's relationship. Dating back 1400 years, the period of the founding of the Western Jin Dynasty is marked by the declining of the Confucianism and the rising of the Huang Lao philosophy(a branch of Daoism) following with the initial stage of Metaphysics. The poem "14th of the Scholar Joining the Army"(hereinafter referred to as "Joining the Army") is a metaphysical poem composed in 2nd century by Ji Kang, one of the celebrated representatives of fourcharacter and initial Metaphysical Poets in Chinese history. This essay tries to analyze the characteristics of the English metaphysical poems and the Western Jin Dynasty metaphysical poems by comparing and contrasting two see-off poems of the two representatives respectively from two different cultures.
