Health psychology training in doctoral psychology programs.

Presents the results of a Division 38 (the health psychology division of the American Psychological Association) survey of graduate training programs in psychology, along with facility-specific information on doctoral training opportunities in health psychology as of Fall 1981. 310 questionnaires were returned from psychology programs; 53 indicated that doctoral training in health psychology was available at their institution. It was found that established subspecialty programs were expanding to include health psychology, and new programs were developing in that area. Media psychology: An empirical study of radio call-in psychology programs.

A survey of 368 shopping mall patrons (mean age 37 yrs) showed that 49% listened to radio call-in psychology programs (RCPPs), although listening was usually relatively infrequent. Listeners did not differ from nonlisteners in terms of demographic variables, psychological knowledge or well-being, or previous experience with psychological services. 86% of listeners saw RCPPs as useful, although 50% also noted potential harmful effects. The most common reasons for listening were a desire for personal information, wanting to learn about psychology, the opportunity to hear about others' problems, and amusement. An additional survey of 122 RCPP callers showed that the group was predominantly female (65%) and most commonly lived alone, that a majority of Ss had previously received some psychological treatment, and that they showed poorer psychological health than Ss in the 1st survey. A postcall interview and 3-mo follow-up indicated an improvement in psychological well-being but no change in reported stress. Albee's (see record 1971-08263-001) conclusions concerning the desirability of training clinical psychologists in arts and sciences graduate schools; the psychiatric setting as inappropriate for apprenticeships; and the incompatibility of scientist-professional models. Accreditation of Canadian psychology programs: Obstacles and opportunities.

There has been substantial debate over the value of concurrent accreditation of doctoral training programs and internships in Canada, both from the Canadian and the American psychological communities. Proponents of concurrent accreditation have argued that concurrent accreditation increases mobility for students and attracts foreign applicants to Canadian graduate programs. Advocates of sole accreditation by the Canadian Psychological Association have argued that there are substantial drawbacks in terms of divergent models, national differences in diversity, and the investment of time and money to maintain cross-national accreditation. In light of the recent decision by the Committee on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association to stop accrediting Canadian programs, this article reviews the past, present, and future state of accreditation in Canada.
