We describe a collection of algorithms designed to support reliable synchronization and group membership services for distributed
multimedia applications. In particular, we consider those applications that require interactivity, isochronous rendering of
multimedia data, and high reliability. We show that the algorithms we propose (i) provide reliable support for the synchronization
of multimedia data streams, despite the occurrence of possible communication failures, (ii) maintain a consistent view of
the relative group membership of all the nonfaulty application components, (iii) guarantee time-bounded delay of component
failure detection and join, and (iv) meet effectively possible scalability requirements of the applications. 相似文献

This paper presents a call admission control (CAC) algorithm for multimedia communication systems with diverse bit-rate media
sources. The proposed algorithm for making bandwidth allocation decisions is based on bounding the probability of demand for
excess bandwidth and the loss (or blocking) probability. Recursion formulas for calculating these probabilities are derived.
An algorithm based on these probabilities executes quickly enough so that the response time to a bandwidth request is acceptable. 相似文献

To simplify the task of building distributed streaming applications, we propose a new abstraction for information flow –
Infopipes. Infopipes make information flow primary, not an auxiliary mechanism that is hidden away. Systems are built by connecting
predefined component Infopipes such as sources, sinks, buffers, filters, broadcasting pipes, and multiplexing pipes. The goal
of Infopipes is not to hide communication, like an RPC system, but to reify it: to represent communication explicitly as objects that the program can interrogate and manipulate. Moreover, these objects
represent communication in application-level terms, not in terms of network or process implementation. 相似文献

Floor control for multimedia conferencing and collaboration 总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
Floor control allows users of networked multimedia applications to utilize and share resources such as remote devices, distributed
data sets, telepointers, or continuous media such as video and audio without access conflicts. Floors are temporary permissions
granted dynamically to collaborating users in order to mitigate race conditions and guarantee mutually exclusive resource
usage. A general framework for floor control is presented. Collaborative environments are characterized and the requirements
for realization of floor control will be identified. The differences to session control, as well as concurrency control and
access control are elicited. Based upon a brief taxonomy of collaboration-relevant parameters, system design issues for floor
control are discussed. Floor control mechanisms are discerned from service policies and principal architectures of collaborative
systems are compared. The structure of control packets and an application programmer's interface are proposed and further
implementation aspects are elaborated. User-related aspects such as floor presentation, assignment, and the timely stages
of floor-controlled interaction in relation to user-interface design are also presented. 相似文献

The multimedia multicasting problem 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
This paper explores the problems associated with the multicasting of continuous media to support multimedia group applications.
The interaction between multicasting and the delivery of multiple time-correlated continuous-media streams with real-time
delay requirements poses various new and interesting problems in research on communication protocols and architectures. We
describe these problems, and identify where the opportunities are for effective solutions, all in the context of providing
an overview of the current state of research in multimedia multicasting. The issues we discuss include quality of service,
resource reservations, routing, error and traffic control, heterogeneity, and the use of hierarchical coding and open-loop
control techniques. 相似文献

Multimedia systems must be able to support a certain quality of service (QoS) to satisfy the stringent real-time performance
requirements of their applications. HeiRAT, the Heidelberg Resource Administration Technique, is a comprehensive QoS management
system that was designed and implemented in connection with a distributed multimedia platform for networked PCs and workstations.
HeiRAT includes techniques for QoS negotiation, QoS calculation, resource reservation, and resource scheduling for local and
network resources. 相似文献

The Personal Presence System (PPS) is an experimental research prototype platform to support advanced broadband applications,
including multimedia conferencing and distance learning. It supports the user's presentation control of advanced network elements
(multimedia bridges). The multimedia bridge provides for a single contact point per user, who receives only one combined video
stream, which minimizes access bandwidth. This architecture solves the -squared transmission problem of multipoint video conferencing and makes customer terminal equipment simpler and cheaper than
high-end desktop workstations. The PPS provides each user with flexible presentation control of a feature-rich video bridge.
The PPS also supports advanced features such as object extraction and multimedia object associations. 相似文献

One of the challenges in the design of a distributed multimedia system
is devising suitable specification models for various schemas in
different levels of the system.
Another important research issue is
the integration and synchronization of heterogeneous multimedia
objects. In this paper, we present our models for multimedia schemas
and transformation algorithms. They transform high-level
multimedia objects into schemas that can be used to
support the presentation and communication of the multimedia objects.
A key module in the system is the Object Exchange Manager (OEM). In this paper,
we present the design and implementation of the OEM module,
and discuss in detail the interaction
between the OEM and other modules in a
distributed multimedia system. 相似文献

This paper describes an event-based synchronization mechanism, which is at the core of the inter-media synchronization in
the upcoming standard for multimedia presentation, PREMO. The synchronization mechanism of PREMO is a powerful tool, based
on a small number of concepts, and on cooperation among active objects, and represents a synthesis of various synchronization
models described in the literature. This model can serve as a basis for the implementation of complex synchronization patterns
in multimedia presentations, both purely event-based, as well as time-based. 相似文献

Without user interactions, multimedia presentations are just fancy slide shows with sound and video supports. User interactions
by themselves do not change the temporal relationships among multimedia objects, such as texts, graphics, images, audio, and
video, but affect the playback schedules. In this paper, we propose a synchronization mechanism to guarantee the quality of
multimedia presentation with user interactions. In our protocol, each presentation site requests media transmission from the
required media servers at certain time intervals prior to the playback deadlines, where these time intervals are the response
times to cover possible experienced end-to-end delays and packet losses, and waits for an initial setup time to ensure intermedia
synchronization before starting the presentation. Users may interact with the presentation. This synchronization mechanism
solves the problems incurred by user interactions by determining the new presentation scenario produced by the interactive
operation, calculating the corresponding setup time, and then rendering the new playback and retrieval schedules. 相似文献

The move from institution to community care has resulted in many people receiving care at home. For some, disability or frailty
restricts their involvement in social activities outside the home, resulting in unacceptable social isolation. This problem
is compounded if the person has a speech or language impairment. In this paper, we will describe a communication service designed
to provide nonspeaking people with a means to interact socially when living independently, based on the sharing of stories
using pictures and other media. Initial exploration on the usability of the system by a pair of representative users will
be described.

The problem of presenting database query results has not been investigated sufficiently. This work proposes an approach to
identify effective presentations for the results of database queries. This will be done by considering different kinds of
information, such as user goals, the characteristics of the data to be presented, and the relationships among them. Our approach
is based on the definition of composition operations which, on the basis of elementary presentation types, allow us to obtain designs of complex final presentations. Some effectiveness criteria are considered in order to identify
those presentations which best match the user's goals and cognitive abilities. We consider multimedia environments at both
the data and presentation level. 相似文献

A network that offers deterministic, i.e., worst case, quality-of-service guarantees to variable-bit-rate (VBR) video must
provide a resource reservation mechanism that allocates bandwidth, buffer space, and other resources for each video stream.
Such a resource reservation scheme must be carefully designed, otherwise network resources are wasted. A key component for
the design of a resource reservation scheme is the traffic characterization method that specifies the traffic arrivals on a video stream. The traffic characterization should accurately describe the
actual arrivals, so that a large number of streams can be supported; but it must also map directly into efficient traffic-policing
mechanisms that monitor arrivals on each stream. In this study, we present a fast and accurate traffic characterization method
for stored VBR video in networks with a deterministic service. We use this approximation to obtain a traffic characterization
that can be efficiently policed by a small number of leaky buckets. We present a case study where we apply our characterization
method to networks that employ a dynamic resource reservation scheme with renegotiation. We use traces from a set of 25–30-min
MPEG sequences to evaluate our method against other characterization schemes from the literature. 相似文献

Wayne Gretzky’s PEBBLESTM (Providing Education By Bringing Learning Environments to Students) is a unique example of a personal technology, one in
which PC-based video-conferencing is used to make a real-time link between a hospitalised child and his or her regular classroom.
The system provides an opportunity for children who are in isolated situations, such as hospitals, to maintain a meaningful
link with their regular educational and social environments, thereby minimising many of the secondary problems that may develop
as a result of long-term illness and hospitalisation. The objective of this paper is to illustrate the impact that PEBBLES
had on one child who directly benefited from the system and on the people with whom she interacted (classmates, parents, teachers
and hospital staff). These results were used to explore how exposure to this personal technology influenced the behaviours
and attitudes of those involved in this study. The results indicate that, overall, PEBBLES has a very positive effect on both
the young and adult participants; the most dramatic effect of all was on the ill child who used PEBBLES to attend school. 相似文献

Abstract. When authoring multimedia scenarios, and in particular scenarios with user interaction, where the sequence and time of occurrence
of interactions is not predefined, it is difficult to guarantee the consistency of the resulting scenarios. As a consequence,
the execution of the scenario may result in unexpected behavior or inconsistent use of media. The present paper proposes a methodology
for checking the temporal integrity of interactive multimedia document (IMD) scenarios at authoring time at various levels.
The IMD flow is mainly defined by the events occurring during the IMD session. Integrity checking consists of a set of discrete
steps, during which we transform the scenario into temporal constraint networks representing the constraints linking the different
possible events in the scenario. Temporal constraint verification techniques are applied to verify the integrity of the scenario,
deriving a minimal network, showing possible temporal relationships between events given a set of constraints.

This paper describes an approach to the problem of articulating multimedia information based on parsing and syntax-directed
translation that uses Relational Grammars. This translation is followed by a constraint-solving mechanism to create the final
layout. Grammatical rules provide the mechanism for mapping from a representation of the content and context of a presentation
to forms that specify the media objects to be realized. These realization forms include sets of spatial and temporal constraints
between elements of the presentation. Individual grammars encapsulate the “look and feel” of a presentation and can be used
as generators of such a style. By making the grammars sensitive to the requirements of the output medium, parsing can introduce
flexibility into the information realization process. 相似文献

The next generation of interactive multimedia documents can contain both static media, e.g., text, graph, image, and continuous
media, e.g., audio and video, and can provide user interactions in distributed environments. However, the temporal information
of multimedia documents cannot be described using traditional document structures, e.g., Open Document Architecture (ODA)
and Standard Generalized Mark-up Language (SGML); the continuous transmission of media units also raises some new synchronization
problems, which have not been met before, for processing user interactions. Thus, developing a distributed interactive multimedia
document system should resolve the issues of document model, presentation control architecture, and control scheme. In this
paper, we (i) propose a new multimedia document model that contains the logical structure, the layout structure, and the temporal
structure to formally describe multimedia documents, and (ii) point out main interaction-based synchronization problems, and
propose a control architecture and a token-based control scheme to solve these interaction-based synchronization problems.
Based on the proposed document model, control architecture, and control scheme, a distributed interactive multimedia document
development mechanism, which is called MING-I, is developed on SUN workstations. 相似文献

In this paper, we present a separable, reusable middleware solution that provides coordinated, end-to-end QoS management
over any type of service component, and can use existing (legacy) QoS management solutions (by using wrappers) in a distributed
multimedia system. Our middleware solution incorporates strategic and tactical QoS managers, and supports protocols and messages
between tactical managers and managed application components, and between QoS managers in the management hierarchy. Strategic
QoS managers take a global view of QoS provided by a set of application components within the manager's policy domain. Tactical
QoS managers provide local control over application components. We introduce the concept of QoS policy domains to scope the
authority of a strategic QoS manager. We describe how the management hierarchy is dynamically configured and reconfigured
based on runtime needs of the application. 相似文献

In this paper, we investigate a playout scheduling framework for supporting the continuous and synchronized presentations
of multimedia streams in a distributed multimedia presentation system. We assume a situation in which the server and network
transmissions provide sufficient support for the delivery of media objects. In this context, major issues regarding the enforcement
of the smooth presentation of multimedia streams at client sites must be addressed to deal with rate variance of stream presentations
and delay variance of networks. We develop various playout-scheduling algorithms that are adaptable to quality-of-service
parameters. The proposed algorithms permit the local adjustment of unsynchronized presentations by gradually accelerating
or retarding presentation components, rather than abruptly skipping or pausing the presentation materials. A comprehensive
experimental analysis of the proposed algorithms demonstrates that our algorithms can effectively avoid playout gaps (or hiccups)
in the presentations. This scheduling framework can be readily used to support customized multimedia presentations. 相似文献

To support emerging real-time applications, high-speed integrated services networks must provide end-to-end performance guarantees
on a per-connection basis in a networking environment. Resource management algorithms must accommodate traffic that may get
burstier as it traverses the network due to complex interactions among packet streams at each switch. To address this problem,
several non-work-conserving packet-service disciplines have been proposed. Non-work-conserving servers may be idle and hold
packets under certain conditions, to reconstruct, fully or partially, the traffic pattern of the original source inside the
network and prevent the traffic from becoming burstier. We compare two non-work-conserving service disciplines. Stop-and-go
uses a multilevel framing strategy to allocate resources in a single switch and to ensure traffic smoothness throughout the
network. Rate controlled static priority (RCSP) decouples the server functions with two components: (1) a regulator to control
traffic distortion introduced by multiplexing effects and load fluctuations in previous servers, and 2) a static priority
scheduler to multiplex the regulated traffic. We compare the two service disciplines in terms of traffic specification, scheduling
mechanism, buffer space requirement, end-to-end delay characteristics, connection admission-control algorithms, and achievable
network utilization. The comparison is first done analytically, and then empirically by using two 10-min traces of MPEG compressed
video. 相似文献
