This study is an attempt to identity the active chemicals (signal) of the odor of dog feces that suppress feeding in domestic sheep. The repellent effects of the odors of dog, wolf, pig, and sheep feces (potential predator and nonpredator species) were assessed on sheep, using a food-choice situation. The odors of wolf and dog feces had the highest repellent effect. A total pentane extract of dog feces was split by micropreparative gas chromatography and the fractions obtained were analyzed and presented to sheep in a food-choice situation. The quantitatively major constituents of the pentane extract, identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, are indole and fatty acids. In food repellency tests, indole had no repellent effect. The active odorous signal contained in dog feces appears to consist of fatty acids mixed with neutral compounds acting synergically. These experiments underline the complexity of this biological signal and constitute a first step in the development of a practical repellent for ungulates.  相似文献

House mice (Mus musculus) living in outdoor enclosures were tested for urinary chemical cue preferences using odor-baited traps. In the first experiment, with only volatile cues available, odors from conspecific males and females of various age classes and reproductive conditions were tested; no preferences were exhibited. In the second experiment mice had both nonvolatile and volatile cues available from the same sources as in experiment I. All age and sex class and female reproductive condition groups exhibited odor cue preferences except juvenile females. There were no specific odor cue preferences exhibited by any of the responder types with regard to odors from juvenile females. In the third and fifth experiments, mice were presented with nonvolatile plus volatile or only volatile urine odor cues, respectively, from four genera,Mus, Peromyscus, Microtus, andHomo. Mice of all age classes and both sexes preferredMus musculus odor, were neutral towardMicrotus ochrogaster odor, and avoided odors fromPeromyscus leucopus andHomo sapiens; these patterns were the same regardless of whether only volatile or both volatile and nonvolatile cues were presented. The fourth and sixth experiments involved testing volatile cues only and volatile cues plus nonvolatile cues from human sweat or feces from dogs, cats, or shrews. Mice avoided the human sweat and feces from cats and shrews, but were neutral toward the odor of dog feces. There were effects on whether mice were trapped in the interior of the enclosure or on the perimeter for some odors tested in these six experiments. The findings provide insights regarding possible functions of odor cues in the behavioral ecology of house mice. Odor-baiting traps can be an effective tool with respect to testing some, but not all questions pertaining to olfactory cues and house mouse social biology.  相似文献

Leaf rinses ofS. berthaultii PI 473334 with methylene chloride were deterrent to feeding by the Colorado potato beetle when applied toS. tuberosum tuber and leaf disks. When the leaf rinse was separated into its nonvolatile and volatile fractions and applied to tuber disks, the nonvolatile fraction was highly deterrent, while the volatile fraction reduced consumption, but not significantly compared to the controls. A hexane leaf rinse was not deterrent to feeding, while an acetone rinse was approximately twofold more deterrent than the methylene chloride rinse when applied to leaf disks. Three cycles of bioassay-guided, reversed-phase open-column fractionation of an acetone leaf rinse yielded a relatively polar fraction with low deterrent activity, and two nonpolar fractions exhibiting higher specific activity. Reversed-phase preparative HPLC of these fractions yielded seven active fractions among the 10 assayed. Subsequent analytical HPLC indicated that two fractions each contained a single UV-absorbing compound, while another represented a mixture of at least four compounds. The remaining fractions were composed of complex mixtures of possibly ionic or polymeric compounds that were poorly resolved by HPLC.  相似文献

The cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus, is a major pest of stored pulses. Females of this species produce a contact sex pheromone that elicits copulation behavior in males. Pheromone was extracted from filter-paper shelters taken from cages that housed females. Crude ether extract stimulated copulation in male C. maculatus. Initial fractionation showed behavioral activity in acidic and neutral fractions. Furthermore, bioassay-guided fractionation and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis of active fractions revealed that the active components of the acidic fraction were 2,6-dimethyloctane-1,8-dioic acid and nonanedioic acid. These components along with the hydrocarbon fraction, a mixture of C27–C35 straight chain and methyl branched hydrocarbons, had a synergistic effect on the behavior of males. Glass dummies treated with an authentic pheromone blend induced copulation behavior in males. The potential roles of the contact sex pheromone of C. maculatus are discussed.  相似文献

Molecular weight fractions of abalone muscle were tested for the ability to induce appetitive feeding and locomotor behavior in the spiny lobster,Panulirus interruptus. Fractions of <1000, 1000–10,000 and >10,000 daltons were isolated by ultrafiltrations and gel chromatography from a seawater extract of abalone muscle. The two lower-molecular-weight fractions (<1000, 1000–10,000) were the least stimulatory of the three fractions tested, and both were ineffective as feeding stimulants. Solutions combining any two of the three isolated fractions produced behavioral activity equal to that caused by whole extract; thus, no single fraction was essential to the stimulatory capacity of abalone. The >1000-dalton fraction was also highly stimulatory, meaning that large and not small molecules were essential in initiating feeding. Finally, a 75% ethanol-insoluble component of the <10,000 fraction was effective, while the ethanol-soluble portion was not. Since the insoluble material consisted predominantly of peptides and polypeptides, it is probable that these molecules act as principal stimulants in abalone muscle.  相似文献

This study assesses abatement costs of three measures aimed at reducing nitrogen (N) emissions from livestock production: two protein-adjusted feeding strategies for pigs, and higher-quality forage for dairy cattle. In a partial cost approach, we quantified the effect of different measures on N losses and production costs. We accounted for emissions of NH3, N2O and NO from animal housing, manure storage, manure application, and from soils. Uncertainties related to volatile prices and assumptions about excretion rates and emission factors were assessed in a Monte Carlo simulation. Covering variability of individual input parameters, this uncertainty assessment addresses a fundamental gap in current decision support on N loss reduction measures. For the scenarios investigated, average N abatement costs at farm level were negative and represented net benefits to farmers: In pig husbandry, adapting feeding practices in most individual situations resulted in net benefits, both for three-phase feeding (min ?35, max +5, mean ?14 €/kg N abated) and optimised single-phase feeding (min ?52, max +4, mean ?21 €/kg N abated). In dairy production, N abatement by improved forage quality proved invariably more economic than current practice (min ?40, max ?11, mean ?21 €/kg N abated). As shown in this study, N abatement costs can serve as a framework for comparing the cost-effectiveness and feasibility of N loss reduction measures within and between livestock production systems. This is in turn critical when informing practitioners and providing policy support on workable strategies for reducing the N footprint of animal husbandry.  相似文献

Combined electrophysiological recordings (EAG) and gas chromatographic separation were performed in order to investigate which volatile chemical components of a sunflower extract could be detected by honeybee workers and thus are likely to trigger the foraging behavior. A direct coupling device allowed for the stimulation of the antennal receptors with individual constituents of a polar fraction of the flower aroma shown to be attractive to bees. More than 100 compounds were separated from the extract. Twenty-four compounds elicited clear EAG responses. These compounds were identified by mass spectrometry (electronic impact and chemical ionisation). Both short- and long-chain aliphatic alcohols, one short-chain aliphatic aldehyde, one acid, two esters, and terpenic compounds were found to stimulate the antennal receptors. Six compounds identified in previous behavioral experiments were found to exhibit EAG activity. The chemicals screened by this method may be used for recognition of the plant odor and the selective behavior of honeybees.  相似文献

A detailed analysis has been carried out on the deasphaltened Athabasca bitumen using two different series of Chromatographic separations followed by i.r., u.v., n.m.r. and computerized GC/MS studies of the separated fractions: saturates (22–25%), monoaromatics (10.3–10.8%), diaromatics (4.6–5.3%), polyaromatics and non-specific polar compounds (28.6%), acids (16.5%), bases (7.8%), and neutral nitrogen compounds (1.6%). The acyclic paraffin content of the maltene is low: straight-chain paraffins and the isoprenoids, phytane and pristane, are present in very low concentrations. Polycyclic saturates represent about 90% of the saturate fraction. The presence of C-27 and C-29–C-35 hopanes of the 17(h):21β(H) series and C-21–C-30 steranes was established. The mono- and diaromatic fractions were analysed by computerized mass spectrometry. The monoaromatic fraction contains alkylbenzenes, naphthenebenzenes and dinaphthenebenzenes in a ratio of 1.0:1.7:1.3. The ratio for naphthalenes, acenaphthenes + dibenzofurans and fluorenes in the diaromatic fraction is 1:0.9:0.5.  相似文献

Caribbean sponges of the genus Ircinia contain high concentrations of linear furanosesterterpene tetronic acids (FTAs) and produce and exude low-molecular-weight volatile compounds (e.g., dimethyl sulfide, methyl isocyanide, methyl isothiocyanate) that give these sponges their characteristic unpleasant garlic odor. It has recently been suggested that FTAs are unlikely to function as antipredatory chemical defenses, and this function may instead be attributed to bioactive volatiles. We tested crude organic extracts and purified fractions isolated from Ircinia campana, I. felix, and I. strobilina at naturally occurring concentrations in laboratory and field feeding assays to determine their palatability to generalist fish predators. We also used a qualitative technique to test the crude volatile fraction from I. felix and I. strobilina and dimethylsulfide in laboratory feeding assays. Crude organic extracts of all three species deterred feeding of fishes in both aquarium and field experiments. Bioassay-directed fractionation resulted in the isolation of the FTA fraction as the sole active fraction of the nonvolatile crude extract for each species, and further assays of subfractions suggested that feeding deterrent activity is shared by the FTAs. FTAs deterred fish feeding in aquarium assays at concentrations as low as 0.5 mg/ml (fraction B, variabilin), while the natural concentrations of combined FTA fractions were >5.0 mg/ml for all three species. In contrast, natural mixtures of volatiles transferred from sponge tissue to food pellets and pure dimethylsulfide incorporated into food pellets were readily eaten by fish in aquarium assays. Although FTAs may play other ecological roles in Ircinia spp., these compounds are effective as defenses against potential predatory fishes. Volatile compounds may serve other defensive functions (e.g., antimicrobial, antifouling) but do not appear to provide a defense against fish predators.  相似文献

Aqueous extracts of three types of bird feces were attractive to laboratory-colony Mexican fruit flies in laboratory bioassays. Extracts of black-bellied whistling duck feces were chosen for further analysis. Duck feces extract was attractive to both sugar-fed and sugar-starved flies but was more attractive to sugar-fed flies. Protein deprivation of flies had no effect on their response. Duck feces incubated in water for 24 hr were more attractive than those incubated for longer periods. Duck feces extract was attractive at pH 5–9, but was most attractive at pH 9, indicating that more than one class of chemicals contributed to attractiveness of the feces. Major components of headspace of duck feces extracts collected by solid-phase microextraction and identified by GC-MS, GC-FID, and GC-FTD included ethanol, propanol, phenol, ammonia, low-molecular weight amines, and pyrazines. In general, chemicals containing nitrogen proved most attractive to sugar-fed flies. However, dimethylamine and 1-pyrroline were nearly equally attractive to sugar-fed and sugar-deprived flies. Two chemicals without nitrogen were attractive to sugar-deprived flies; none were attractive to sugar-fed flies. A synthetic mixture was prepared containing ammonia, methylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, 1-pyrroline, phenol, and 2-ethylhexanol in amounts found in odor of duck feces extract. The synthetic mixture was 96% as attractive as duck feces extract to sugar-fed flies and 80% as attractive to sugar-deprived flies.  相似文献

A new method to remove and purify the naphthenic acids in heavy fractions of petroleum is studied in this paper. An ammonia solution of ethylene glycol was used as the acid removal reagent by mixing with the petroleum fraction and then allowing the two phases to separate, with the naphthenic acids being extracted from petroleum fractions. The naphthenic acids were recovered by heating the ammonia solution containing naphthenic acids to release NH3 and decompose the naphthenic acid ammonia salt. Petroleum ether was used to purify the naphthenic acids by extracting the neutral oils from the acid removal reagent. Data indicated that the optimal extraction temperature was in the range of 50–60 °C and the optimal NH3 content in ethylene glycol was 3–5%. The contact time should be more than 10 min with the reagent/oil ratio being more than 0.3 (wt/wt). Acid removal can be greater than 85%. After purification by petroleum ether, the purity of naphthenic acids can be greater than 90%.  相似文献

为深入研究快递包装袋的特征气味成分,通过液液萃取法获得快递包装袋挥发性气味成分并采用气相色谱?质谱联用仪(GC?MS)对其进行分离鉴定。结果表明,利用液液萃取法从快递包装袋中共鉴定出了30 余种物质,其中相对质量分数最高的是醇类化合物及其他类化合物;2?(十八烷氧基)?乙醇、乙酰柠檬酸三丁酯、1?氯?七叶苷、2?十六醇、2?溴十八烷、叔十六硫醇相对质量分数均较高,对快递包装袋特殊气味的形成可能具有关键性影响。  相似文献

Larvae of the cabbage butterfly,Pieris rapae, refuse to feed on the wild mustard,Erysimum cheiranthoides, due to the presence of alcoholextractable deterrents. The active components were extracted inton-BuOH, and this extract was separated into four fractions (I–IV) by reverse-phase HPLC. Fractions III and IV retained the feeding deterrent activity. The activity of fraction III was found to be due to the cardenolide diglycosides 1 and 2, which were previously reported as oviposition deterrents for gravidP. rapae butterflies. Three active compounds were isolated from fraction IV by column chromatography on silica gel followed by reverse-phase HPLC. These compounds were identified as a monoglycoside, digitoxigenin 3-O--D-glucoside (4), and two diglycosides, glucodigigulomethyloside (5) and glucodigifucoside (6). An additional cardenolide isolated from fraction II was identified as cheirotoxin (7). All compounds were identified by UV, NMR (1H and13C), and mass spectrometry, as well as hydrolysis experiments. The feeding deterrent activity of these compounds was compared with that of related commercially available chemicals and other compounds isolated fromE. cheiranthoides.  相似文献

The role of volatile infochemicals emitted by feces of larvae in the host-searching behavior of the parasitoidCotesia rubecula was evaluated during single- and dual-choice tests inside a wind tunnel. The following treatments were tested: feces produced by second and fourth instars ofPieris rapae (preferred host), second instars ofP. brassicae (inferior host), second instars ofP. napi (nonhost), and wet feces of second instars ofP. rapae. During a single-choice situation females ofC. rubecula oriented to all types of feces tested. When a preference was to be made,C. rubecula preferred feces of second instars ofP. rapae over that of fourth, feces ofP. rapae over that ofP. brassicae, feces ofP. napi over that ofP. brassicae, and wet over normal host feces. No preference was exhibited between feces of second instars ofP. napi and that of second instars ofP. rapae. The relative importance of infochemicals from host feces versus plant damage caused by host larvae to the searching behavior ofC. rubecula was also evaluated. Plant damage was more important to the searching females than host feces when feces were present in specific concentrations in relation to damage. The volatiles released by normal and wet feces of second instars ofP. rapae, wet feces of fourth instars ofP. rapae, and normal and wet feces ofP. brassicae were collected and identified. Overall, 85 chemical compounds were recorded belonging to the following chemical groups: alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, esters, isothiocyanates, sulfides, nitriles, furanoids, terpenoids and pyridines. The blend of chemicals emitted by feces of different instars ofP. rapae and different species ofPieris exhibited an instar and species specificity in both quantity and quality. Wetting of normal feces increased the amount of volatile chemicals released, and it was also responsible for the appearance of new compounds. The role of feces of larvae in the host-seeking behavior ofC. rubecula is discussed.  相似文献

To improve the quality level of plastic packaging materials, we determined the influence of chemical degradation of polypropylene (PP) upon the amount of volatile components extracted by hot water from PP pellets. Two formulations were analyzed and compared: PP CR (degraded) and PP (not degraded). After Likens-Nickerson's extraction of the pellets and concentration of the extract, an HPLC fractionation was made to collect three fractions of different poiarities: a pentane (A), a dichloromethane (B), and an ether (C) fraction. Fractions (B) and (C) were olfactively evaluated by GC sniffing to be most interesting. Their analysis by GC/MS coupling allowed the identification of different components: aldehydes, ketones, and phenols in fraction B and alcohols and acids in fraction C. A quantitative analysis gave us the amounts of volatiles that were compared to their olfactive thresholds in water; thus, in fraction (B), nonanal and decanal were concluded to have a potential olfactive contribution to the odor of water in contact with PP. A statistical analysis showed that chemical degradation had little influence upon the amounts of volatiles extracted from PP pellets by hot water.  相似文献

Milk fat fractions from supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction were compared with commercial melt crystallization (MC) fractions for their physical and chemical properties. The fractions were analyzed for fatty acids, triacylglycerols, cholesterol, total carotenoid content, and volatile compounds. The fractions were also evaluated for solid fat content (SFC) by pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance and thermal profiles by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The distribution of fatty acids and triacylglycerols in the fractions depended on the fractionation technique used. SC-CO2 separated fractions based on molecular weight rather than on melting point, which is the driving force for the MC process. The differences among the fractions were quantified from their SFC and DSC curves. Triacylglycerol profiles by high-performance liquid chromatography showed that the SC-CO2 fractions were distinctly different from each other and from MC fractions. The SC-CO2 solid fraction (super stearin) was the most unique. It had a high concentration of long-chain, unsaturated fatty acid-containing triacylglycerols in a narrow range of high molecular weight, indicating a homogeneity of this fraction that has not been attainable by other techniques. It was also enriched in β-carotene and was devoid of volatile compounds. As compared to liquid MC fractions, the liquid SC-CO2 fraction had a high concentration of low-melting triacylglycerols and was enriched in volatile compounds. With SC-CO2, it is thus possible to simultaneously fractionate and produce a flavor-rich concentrate at no extra processing cost.  相似文献

Free-ranging beaver (Castor canadensis) in two different beaver populations in New York State were exposed to predator chemicals to test feeding inhibition. Solvent extracts of feces were applied to stem sections of aspen, the preferred food tree of beavers, permitting smelling and tasting the samples. Predator odors were from wolf (Canis lupus), coyote (Canis latrans), dog (Canis familiaris), black bear (Ursus americanus), river otter (Lutra canadensis), lynx (Lynx canadensis), and African lion (Panthera leo). The experiment was repeated. The predator odors reduced feeding compared to untreated or solvent-treated controls. One population consumed 17.0% of the samples with predator odor and 27.0% of the controls in summer, and 48.4% and 60.0%, respectively, in autumn. The other population accepted 3.15% of the predator odor samples and 11.05% of the controls in summer. Coyote, lynx, and river otter odors had the strongest effects. Diesel oil and bitter-tasting neem extract had weaker effects. Predator odors are promising as feeding repellents for beaver.  相似文献

The desilked silkworm pupae (Bombyx mori L.) collected from Kollegala, Malavalli and Ramanagaram belt of Karnataka State (South India) were extracted with petroleum ether (60–80°C). The neutral lipids fraction was isolated and saponified. Saponifiable fraction was analysed for fatly acids and unsaponifiable fraction for sterols. The neutral lipids contain oleic, palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic, linoleic, I auric, myristic, C13:0-, linolenic and arachidic acids. Cholesterol, β-sitosterol and a trace of campesterol are found to be present in unsaponifiable fractions.  相似文献

Unrestrained rabbits, 2–3 months old and nestlings, were exposed to the odors of the acid-neutral, acid, neutral, and basic fractions of the anal gland of male rabbits. The acid-neutral, acid, and neutral fractions elicited the strongest response in the form of avoidance. The heart rates of the nestlings were monitored using a radio telemetry technique. Statistically significant lowering of the heart rate and an increase in variability occurred on exposure to the fractions. The extent of the changes varied consistently in relation to a given odor, being greatest for the acid and neutral fractions. The results indicate the usefulness of heart-rate monitoring as a tool in the study of the perception of odors by animals.  相似文献

Commercial stearic acid may have an iodine value of less than 0.5. However, it develops a characteristic objectionable odor quite rapidly, sometimes before a shipment has reached its destination. The present investigation is an identification of the volatile odoriferous compounds which are responsible for this undesirable odor. Volatile compounds were isolated from commercial stearic acid and separated into acidic and nonacidic compounds. The acidic fraction did not have the characteristic off-odor of the commercial stearic acid and was discarded. The nonacidic fraction was fractionated into pure compounds by repeated gas chromatography, which then were identified by a combination of gas chromatographic retention time and IR and mass spectrometry. A total of 52 compounds was identified positively. They contained a relatively large number of lactones, viz, 7 γ-lactones, 4 δ-lactones, and 2 γ-2-ene lactones. The other identified compounds were 11 saturated hydrocarbons, 7 saturated primary alcohols, 6 saturated methyl ketones, 10 saturated normal aldehydes, 4 saturated esters, and 1 diphenyl ether. In addition, 2 saturated aldehydes and 1 γ-3-ene lactone were identified tentatively. The odors of the saturated and unsaturated lactones were reminiscent of the objectionable odor characteristic of commercial stearic acid. Quantitative estimation indicated that commercial stearic acid contained: 0.47 ppm of 4-hydroxy-hexanoic acid, lactone; 0.06 ppm of 4-hydroxy-heptanoic acid, lactone; 0.31 ppm of 4-hydroxy-octanoic acid, lactone; 0.06 ppm of 4-hydroxy-nonanoic acid, lactone; and 0.53 ppm of 4-hydroxy-undecanoic acid, lactone.
