Crutchfield was born in Pittsburgh on June 20, 1912. He received his BA in civil engineering from the California Institute of Technology and his PhD in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1938-1939 he was a research associate at Swarthmore College, where he worked with Wolfgang Kohler. The next year he was an instructor at Mount Holyoke College. From 1940 to 1946 he held research and administrative appointments with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Office of War Information, and the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey in Germany. In several of these posts he contributed to the developing methodology of opinion surveys, and for distinguished service in the last position he was awarded the Medal of Freedom by the U.S. Department of War. In 1946 he returned to Swarthmore, where he later served as Chairman of the Psychology Department. After several visiting appointments at the University of California, Berkeley, he came permanently as professor of psychology in 1953. He was one of the original team of research psychologists at the Institute of Personality Assessment and Research (IPAR) in Berkeley, and in 1970 he succeeded Donald W. MacKinnon as Director. Failing health forced him to resign this position in 1973. Crutchfield passed away on July 19, 1977. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Richard A. Pasewark was born on October 21, 1927, and died on February 2, 2007, at home in Oak Harbor, Washington, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Richard received his bachelor's degree from City College of New York (1949) and his master's (1950) and doctoral (1957) degrees in psychology from New York University. He joined the Wyoming Division of Mental Health in 1957 and by 1959 became its director, the first psychologist in history to become a director of a state division of mental health. In 1961 he joined the faculty at the University of Wyoming (UW), where he remained for 33 years, giving tirelessly of himself to the department, students, faculty, university, and region. No one has had a greater impact on the face of psychology in Wyoming than Richard, who helped to develop licensing laws, commitment procedures, definitions of mental illness, and other legislation related to the practice of psychology. He was instrumental in obtaining grants and establishing community mental health centers and other service organizations throughout the state. In addition to being actively involved at the community, state, regional, and national levels, Richard was also a respected scholar and author of more than 125 publications, 15 grants, and numerous presentations. This is an obituary for Charles Richard "Rick" Snyder. Before C. R. Snyder, hope was a concept elusive to many clinicians and clients, clinical and social psychologists often spoke at rather than to one another, and there was a limited collaborative spirit between the clinical and social subfields. As a result of his scholarship, mentorship, and generous spirit, hope is more accessible, the social-clinical interface is a vibrant area of study, and psychology is a more civil profession. Presents the biography and scientific publications of Richard F. Thompson, a recipient of the award for Distinguished Scientific Contribution in 1974. For his imaginative and extensive contributions to our understanding of the neural bases of behavior. His careful and systematic investigations of the neurophysiology of behavioral plasticity have increased our knowledge of the nature of learning and have served as models of scientific inquiry. Through his writings he has clarified our thinking about critical conceptual issues concerning brain and behavior. As a teacher and colleague he has gently stimulated, encouraged, and guided the development of research and theory concerning the neurobiological bases of behavior. Reports that Richard Lester Solomon is one of the recipients of the 1966 American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award. His citation reads: "For his incisive and insistent inquiry into fundamental problems of discrimination, of word recognition thresholds, and of conditioning. His studies give us deep insights into the way the nervous system relates the organism to its world. At his side, colleagues and students have learned dignity and persistence, as well as master craftsmanship in research, responding warmly to his quietly contagious enthusiasm. And while he prefers for himself a measured and manageable framework, he has given steady encouragement to others' views and efforts." A personal biography is also included, along with a listing of his scientific writings. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Presents an obituary for Richard Youtz. Youtz's dissertation research was the first extensive study of extinction and spontaneous recovery of a "Thorndikian" (instrumental) response. In a series of articles, he showed that resistance to extinction increased as a function of the number of training trials and as a function of the delay between training and extinction, that the degree of spontaneous recovery was directly related to the delay between extinction sessions but was not affected by the number of training trials, and that extinction of one response reduced resistance to extinction of another response (secondary extinction). These articles were frequently cited, and the phenomenon of spontaneous recovery after extinction of an instrumental response is considered to be of such importance that contemporary laboratory courses in learning frequently include an experimental exercise that is modeled after Youtz's original work. Youtz's career took him to Barnard College, Oberlin College, the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, and back to Barnard College. He built a strong undergraduate major there during his time as chair. He was an experimentalist who believed that the best way for people to learn was by doing. He implemented an undergraduate curriculum that had, at its core, courses that provided hands-on experiences in experimental psychology. This curriculum led many Barnard psychology majors to pursue graduate training and careers in the field. Youtz passed away in 1986. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Richard Chatham Atkinson was presented a Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award for combining classical methods of mathematics with emerging techniques of computer science, the best traditions of experimental psychology with new concepts of information processing, in the advancement of psychological theory and its applications. His long-term collaboration with Patrick Suppes yielded among its fruits the first extensive application of learning theory to multiperson interactions. With Richard M. Shiffrin, Atkinson developed the model that has set the pace for research on human short-term memory; with James Juola and others he developed an almost equally influential family of models for recognition and search processes. And on a quite different tack, Atkinson anticipated current demands for "relevance" with his pioneering contributions to computer-assisted instruction and optimization of learning. The Awards for Distinguished Education and Training Contributions are given by the Education and Training Awards Committee in recognition of the efforts of psychologists who have made distinguished contributions to education and training, who have produced imaginative innovations, or who have been involved in the developmental phases of programs in education and training in psychology. Each year the committee presents two of these awards. The Distinguished Career Contribution Award recognizes continuous significant contributions made over a lifelong career in psychology; the Distinguished Contribution Award recognizes a specific but major contribution to education and training. The 1993 recipient of the Award for Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology is Richard M. Suinn. Suinn's citation, biography, and selected bibliography are presented here. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Wendell Richard Garner was born on January 21, 1921, in Buffalo, New York, and died quietly on August 14, 2008, in Redding, Connecticut. He was an experimental psychologist who changed the way researchers study human perception and cognition. He provided new knowledge about how people process information and structure and about how to ask scientific questions. Three classes of his contributions are particularly noteworthy. His concept of converging operations, that outcomes of different studies converge on a common concept, paved the way to powerful analytic techniques, such as additive factors modeling. His information and structure ideas shaped research in perception and cognition and pattern recognition. His perceptual independence notions set the stage for hundreds of studies of dimensional independence and interaction, of perceptual integrality and separability, and of dimensional attention that are still actively pursued. Life for Tex was not all science and administration. He collaborated on Earnshaw Cook's Percentage Baseball (1964) and briefly consulted with the Baltimore Orioles baseball club. I asked why he did not similarly analyze football for the Baltimore Colts. He said it might spoil his love for that game. After his death, nonsolicited kudos circulating on the Internet included such comments as I wish I had known him and I didn't know him, but I did know his elegant and insightful work.
