This paper highlights the current approach to large-scale internetwork design using today's network layer routeing protocols. It describes how large internetworks can be constructed to provide stability, resilience and scalability, together with a set of best practice design guidelines for those involved in the design of large data networks, highlighting the key issues to be considered. The paper looks at how new technologies are likely to enhance this design approach, in particular, how the full potential of cell switching can be realised through emerging technologies such as integrated switching and routeing. The paper concludes that the model proposed for large-scale networks based on current routeing protocols and technologies can be enhanced to make optimum use of switched WAN services such as ATM, through the use of newer routeing technologies.  相似文献

This article summarizes the present state of optical networking, how we got to this point, and what needs to be done to complete the job. The point of departure is an assumed future two-level structure in which the transport is by means of steadily growing interconnected all-optical islands of transparency, while the remainder of the communication layers are based on IP, both levels being managed by an MPLS-based control plane. After reviewing why such networks are becoming inevitable, a review is given of the various optical layer technology and architecture bottlenecks that have had to be solved. Significant research efforts in industry and academia have been underway to accelerate the development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) for safe, efficient, and convenient driving. Much of the research effort has been devoted to meet the challenges of effectively integrating wireless communications, computing, and advanced sensor technologies into vehicular and transportation systems. To date, the Automotive Networking Series has published articles that address such challenges, including characterization of vehicular communication channels and development of wireless system technologies; design of protocols for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) or vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) networking that adapt to changes of roadway conditions to provide fast, reliable communications; simulation tools to validate designs in realistic roadway scenarios; technologies to achieve security and privacy; and standardization, among others.  相似文献

In this paper we present a new approach called cue-based networking that uses hints or cues about the physical environment to optimize networked application behavior. We define the notion of cues and describe how cues can be obtained using wireless sensor networks as the underlying platform. We identify both the research and system challenges that need to be addressed to realize benefits of the approach under a target application of video delivery over IP networks. In the process, we identify key challenges of wireless sensor networks, namely timeliness and robustness. We design an adaptive algorithm that balances the tradeoff between them satisfying both timeliness and robustness requirements. Through an implementation of the video delivery application using the proposed algorithm in a real home environment, we highlight the practical benefits of the proposed approach.  相似文献

Consequently, protocol research has shifted into high gear to develop appropriate network protocols for supporting mobility. This introductory article attempts to outline some of the many promising and interesting research directions. The papers in this special issue indicate the diversity of viewpoints within the research community, and it is part of the purpose of this introduction to frame their place within the overall research area. 针对当前互联网中存在的2个亟待解决的问题:OTT(over the top)流量占用大量网络带宽以及信息高度冗余,提出了一种具有差异化服务能力的未来网络体系架构——服务定制网络(SCN, service customized networking)。SCN基于软件定义网络设计,继承了其数据控制分离以及网络可编程的主要特点,并针对当前互联网中的问题,增加了网络虚拟化能力以及内容智能调度能力。通过构建具有不同等级服务能力的虚拟网络,SCN可以避免OTT业务大量占用带宽。同时,通过信息资源智能有序调度,SCN可以消减信息冗余。在小规模真实网络平台上进行的实验结果表明,SCN确实具备为不同用户提供差异化服务能力以及有效减少信息冗余的能力。  相似文献

This paper presents an inventory of the current state and future prospects for networks in which signal paths between end user nodes remain entirely in optical form without intervening electronic conversions. The emphasis is on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). The applications and system aspects are stressed relative to details of the supporting technologies. The case to be made for optical networks as the basis of an entire possible future generation of networking is examined, after which the various architectural choices are discussed. Next, the limits on what can be achieved, mostly arising from limitations within the available technology, are treated. After a review of the history of all-optical networking, the paper concludes with speculations about where the applications, the technology and the architectural character of these systems will be going in the years ahead  相似文献
