environment. Several solutions are presented and estimated to enable booting, file system access and swapping. Implementation techniques, compatible with the UNIX United philosophy, are proposed. Specific topics covered are file servers, swap servers, disk servers, indirect drivers, system call service access from kernel coroutines of UNIX processes, and communication subsystems. It is shown that the modifications to the UNIX system can be limited to one new device driver in the diskless workstation and one in the system providing the secondary storage facility.

UNIX has been around for 20 years and has drawn periodic attention from the MIS community, but the significance of this innovative operating system is just beginning to be felt among MIS professionals. Although it is tempting to dismiss UNIX as just another fad in information technology, the technical, economic, and social forces behind the UNIX innovation indicate that its effects will be far-reaching. This column discusses the origins and characteristics of UNIX, explores some important differences between UNIX and conventional operating systems, and presents the likely economic implications of the UNIX phenomenon for MIS management.

分布式UNLX文件安全检测系统的设计与实现

文件系统是UNIX系统的核心,针对UNIX文件系统提出了一套基于分布式网络的UNIX文件安全检测方案。首先我们介绍了UNIX文件系统及UNIX文件系统的常用安全技术,比较了传统的文件监测方法与本方案的异同,然后给出了本方案的具体实现。     

一个安全操作系统S—UNIX的研究与设计

S-UNIX是一个基于UNIX的安全操作系统,其目标是TCSEC的B2级以上且保持与UNIX的兼容性,本文从存取控制、审计、可信进程管理、病毒防御、隐通道分析处理、可信通路建立六个方面,介绍了S-UNIX的研究与设计,S-UNIX基本系统在386微机上初步运行表明,它极大地提高了UNIX的安全性,并能够保持与UNIX的兼容性。     

A critique of unix

The UNIX operating system enjoys an ever increasing popularity throughout the computing community; there will be 1.4 million UNIX licences distributed by 1985, rising at a rate of about 400,000 per annum. With universal acceptance of a system comes a dangerously high degree of inertia. Consider the analogous area of programming languages, where there has been great resistance to change, despite major advancements. This paper presents a critique of UNIX, based on three areas which we consider to be of vital importance to future operating systems. These areas are operating system structures and design, programming support environments and distributed computing. The criticisms presented are in no way intended to discredit UNIX. UNIX compares favourably with most of the present generation of operating systems. The intention is to highlight deficiencies in the state of the art in operating system design.

Innovative Computing with UNIX

Since its creation in 1969, the UNIX operating system has been used for such applications as telephone switching systems, transaction processing, office automation systems, artificial intelligence, and computer games. To make intelligent decisions about the application of UNIX-based systems, the MIS manager must understand the UNIX system in general, its strengths and weaknesses, and its applicability in various functional areas. This article discusses these aspects of UNIX and suggests how the MIS manager can introduce UNIX into the MIS department.

This paper describes the modifications which were made to the UNIX kernel to support such a file system and the associated recovery facilities for maintaining the internal consistency of files despite the failure of the host processor, transient hardware failures and decay of the storage medium.

A multicast interface for UNIX 4.3

The UNIX 4.3 operating system, like its predecessor UNIX 4.2, is designed to allow interprocess communications between pairs of processes using sockets — pairs of integers identifying specific hosts and ports — which are associated with a process. In this paper a software package which allows interprocess communications between many UNIX processes (as opposed to two) is presented.
