The single-ceramic-layer (SCL) 8YSZ (conventional and nanostructured 8YSZ) and double-ceramic-layer (DCL) La2Zr2O7 (LZ)/8YSZ thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were fabricated by plasma spraying on nickel-based superalloy substrates with NiCrAlY as the bond coat. The thermal shock behavior of the three as-sprayed TBCs at 1000 °C and 1200 °C was investigated. The results indicate that the thermal cycling lifetime of LZ/8YSZ TBCs is longer than that of SCL 8YSZ TBCs due to the fact that the DCL LZ/8YSZ TBCs further enhance the thermal insulation effect, improve the sintering resistance ability and relieve the thermal mismatch between the ceramic layer and the metallic layer at high temperature. The nanostructured 8YSZ has higher thermal shock resistance ability than that of the conventional 8YSZ TBC which is attributed to the lower tensile stress in plane and higher fracture toughness of the nanostructured 8YSZ layer. The pre-existed cracks in the surface propagate toward the interface vertically under the thermal activation. The nucleation and growth of the horizontal crack along the interface eventually lead to the failure of the coating. The crack propagation modes have been established, and the failure patterns of the three as-sprayed coatings during thermal shock have been discussed in detail.  相似文献

During high temperature service, a series of microstructure and phase evolutions occur in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), which result in degradation of thermal insulation and durability. In this study, the sintering behavior of an air plasma sprayed 8 wt% YSZ coating deposited using electro-sprayed nanostructured particles (ESP) as feedstock powder was investigated and compared with conventional YSZ coating deposited using hollow spherical powders (HOSP). Due to the distinct asymmetric porous structure formed by nanosized YSZ particles, the ESP powder was partially melted in the plasma jet during the deposition, which resulted in the formation of a nanostructured coating that consisted of porous nanozones and dense zones. The ESP coating not only shows a significantly lower initial thermal conductivity of 0.70 W/mK, but also exhibits a stronger sintering resistance in terms of phase stability and thermal insulation compared to the conventional coating. When subjected to prolonged sintering at 1400°C for 128 hours, the thermal conductivity of the ESP coating would gradually increase to about half that of the HOSP coating at 1.29 W/mK. These differences are ascribed to the interaction among different sintering behavior between nanozones and dense zones.  相似文献

Nanostructured 4SYSZ (scandia (3.5 mol%) yttria (0.5 mol%) stabilized zirconia) and 5.5 SYSZ (5 mol% scandia and 0.5 mol% yttria) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were deposited on nickel-based superalloy using NiCrAlY as the bond coat by plasma spraying process. The thermal shock response of both as-sprayed TBCs was investigated at 1000 °C. Experimental results indicated that the nanostructured 5.5SYSZ TBCs have better thermal shock performance in contrast to 4SYSZ TBCs due to their higher tetragonal phase content and higher fracture toughness of this coating  相似文献

A micro-agglomerated particle embedded–thermal barrier coating (TBC) structure was prepared by an improved plasma spray process to withstand the sintering-induced degradation of TBCs during service. In this study, the sintering resistance and thermophysical and mechanical properties of conventional and novel-structured TBCs were systematically characterized. The results suggested that the thermal conductivity and sintering shrinkage of the novel-structured TBCs were approximately 30% lower than those of conventional air plasma spraying TBCs. The elastic modulus of the novel-structured coating is only 32% of that of the conventional structure after thermal exposure at 1300°C for 100 h. The distinct structure of the coating is the main factor that influences its performance. The relationship between the structural evolution and residual strain of the coating was analyzed using electron backscatter diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Significant differences were observed in the sintering behavior of the dense matrix and embedded particle regions in the coating. Some columnar grains near the intersplat pores in the dense matrix have similar lattice orientations, and they tend to connect and consequently heal the intersplat pores. The large pores between the agglomerated particles and non-oriented submicron-sized grains that constitute these particles are responsible for the sintering resistance of the coating.  相似文献

In this study, a newly-tailored plasma-sprayed (PS) yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramic coating towards enhanced strain tolerance and sintering resistance was developed to improve the durability of TBCs. The thermal shock life was found to be markedly prolonged by more than four times. Failure mechanisms and sintering behavior of the newly-structured and conventional TBCs were systematically investigated through microstructural and mechanical analyses. Conventional TBCs suffered a premature spallation due to rapid sintering-induced stiffening of the ceramic top coat. In contrast, the new coating exhibits an enhanced sintering resistance whereby preserving a good strain tolerance over time. Specifically, its elastic modulus after thermal exposure remains comparable to the as-sprayed states. The effect of ceramic top coat stiffness on cracking behavior of TBCs was clarified by a corresponding cohesive zone finite element modeling. This study provides a new option for improving TBCs durability and the results could benefit the increased integrity of TBCs.  相似文献

Nanostructured scandia, yttria doped zirconia (5.5SYSZ), 7 wt% yttria stabilized zirconia (7YSZ) and 15YSZ thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were produced by plasma spraying on nickel-based superalloy substrates with NiCrAlY as the bond coat. The thermal stability and sintering behavior of the three as-sprayed TBCs at 1480 °C were investigated. The results indicated that the thermal stability of SYSZ and TBCs was longer than the 7YSZ TBCs due to higher amount of tetragonal phase. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the nanostructured 7YSZ coating exhibits higher sintering resistance than 5.5SYSZ TBC.  相似文献

This paper aimed to design and optimize the structure of a thick thermal barrier coating by adding graded layers to achieve a balance between high thermal insulation capacity and durability. To this end, conventional TBC, conventional TTBC, and functionally graded TTBCs were deposited on the superalloy substrate by air plasma spraying. To determine the quality of the bond strength of the coatings, the bonding strength was measured. The durability of coatings was evaluated by isothermal oxidation and thermal shock tests. Then, at a temperature of 1000 °C, the thermal insulation capacity of the coatings was carried out. The microstructure of the coatings was characterized by a scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the thickness of the TGO layer formed on the bond coat in the conventional TBC and TTBC under the oxidation test at 1000 °C after 150 h was 2.79 and 2.11 μm, respectively, whereas, in the functionally graded TTBC samples, no continuous TGO layer was observed as a result of internal oxidation. The functionally graded TTBC presented higher durability than conventional TTBC due to improved bonding strength, thermal shock resistance, and the lack of a TGO layer at the bond/top coat interface. Also, the thermal insulation capacity of the functionally graded TTBC (with 1000 μm thickness of YSZ coating) was better than TTBC.  相似文献

Adhesion strength and thermal insulation of nanostructured Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier coatings (TBC) were investigated and compared with those of conventional YSZ TBCs. A Nickel based superalloy (IN-738LC) was used as the substrate with NiCrAlY bond coat, and nanostructured and conventional YSZ top coats were applied by using air plasma spray (APS). The adhesion strength of coatings was evaluated according to ASTM C633-01, and their thermal insulation capability was evaluated using a specially designed test setup at an electrical furnace. The results revealed the nanostructured YSZ coating to have a bimodal microstructure consisting of nanosized particles and microcolumnar grains. The bimodal microstructure of nanostructured coatings prevented crack propagation by splat boundaries and unmelted particles, thereby improving the bonding strength. Also, due to the presence of nano-zones in the microstructure of nano TBCs, coatings exhibited superior thermal insulation capability.  相似文献

Nanostructured thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are being widely researched for their superior thermal barrier effect and strain compliance. However, the sintering occurs inevitably in nanostructured TBCs that comprise both nanozones and lamellar zones, although the mechanism of sintering in such bimodal coatings is not yet clear. This study investigates the changes in microstructure and properties of nanostructured TBCs during thermal exposure with the aim to reveal the sintering mechanism operative in these coatings. Results show that the sintering process occurs in two stages. It was found that in the initial shorter stage (~0–10 h), the properties increased rapidly; moreover, this change was anisotropic. The main structural change was the significant healing of the intersplat pores through multiconnection. During the subsequent longer stage, the change in the properties was much smaller, where it was observed that the pores continued to heal, albeit at a much lower rate. Furthermore, the faster densification of the nanozones induced during sintering became significant, resulting in an opening at the interface between the nanozones and the lamellar zones. In brief, the pore healing at the lamellar zones affects the properties, especially in the initial stage. The presence of nanozones has a positive effect in that the performance degradation during the overall thermal exposure is slowed down. An understanding of this competing sintering mechanism would enable the structural tailoring of nanostructured TBCs in order to increase their thermal insulation and thermal cycling lifetime.  相似文献

In this work, two types of yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) powders, a microsized powder and a reconstituted nanostructured powder, were used as the original feedstock for depositing thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) using a high-efficiency supersonic atmospheric plasma spraying (SAPS) system. The effect of the original powder on the coating microstructure was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results indicated that the microsized powder was fully melted in the plasma jet and that the as-sprayed conventional coating (named MC) was composed of regular-shaped tetragonal ZrO2 with grain size of 200–500 nm. However, the cross-section morphology of the water-quenched powders revealed that the reconstituted nanostructured powder was partially melted during plasma spraying and that the as-sprayed nanostructured coating (named NC) exhibited a multi-modal microstructure that mainly consisted of unmelted nanoparticles (30–50 nm) and nanograins (60–110 nm), with the latter being the main microstructure of the coating. One visible polycrystalline region consisting of 10 nm grains was also found in NC. In addition, due to the full melting of the microsized powder in the plasma jet, MC exhibited a lower porosity and higher microhardness and Weibull modulus compared with those of NC. In the following paper (Part II), the thermo-mechanical properties, such as thermal shock resistance, oxidation resistance and thermal insulation performance, of the above two coating types will be further studied.  相似文献

The main goal of the current study is evaluation and comparison of thermal shock behavior of plasma-sprayed nanostructured and conventional yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). To this end, the nanostructured and conventional YSZ coatings were deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) on NiCoCrAlY-coated Inconel 738LC substrates. The thermal shock test was administered by quenching the samples in cold water of temperature 20–25 °C from 950 °C. In order to characterize elastic modulus of plasma-sprayed coatings, the Knoop indentation method was employed. Microstructural evaluation, elemental analysis, and phase analysis were performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) respectively. The results revealed that failures of both nanostructured and conventional TBCs were due to the spallation of ceramic top coat. Thermal stresses caused by mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients between the ceramic top coat and the underlying metallic components were recognized as the major factor of TBC failure. However, the nanostructured TBC, due to bimodal unique microstructure, presented an average thermal cycling lifetime that was approximately 1.5 times higher than that of the conventional TBC.  相似文献

Nanostructured 8 wt% yttria partially stabilized zirconia coatings were deposited by air plasma spraying. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were carried out to analyze the as-sprayed coatings and powders. Mercury intrusion porosimetry was applied to analyze the pore size distribution. Laser flash technique and differential scanning calorimetry were used to examine the thermophysical properties of the nanostructured coatings. The results demonstrate that the as-sprayed nanostructured zirconia coatings consist of the nonequilibrium tetragonal phase. The microstructure of the nanostructured coatings includes the initial nanostructure of powder and columnar grains. Moreover, micron-sized equiaxed grains were also exhibited in the nanostructured coatings. Their evolution mechanisms are discussed. The as-sprayed nanostructured zirconia coating shows a bimodal pore size distribution, and has a lower value of thermal conductivity than the conventional coating.  相似文献

Thermal barrier coating (TBC) system is an essential technology in many fields associated to high temperatures. The main function of these TBCs is to protect the metallic parts against high temperatures over 1000 °C. However, degradation occurs both in thermal and mechanical performances during service. Thus, understanding the underlying degradation and failure mechanisms of TBCs is significant to assess and further enhance the durability and reliability of TBCs. Regarding the durability of TBCs, this paper reviews different failures mechanisms of TBCs caused by residual stresses, phase transformations, sintering, hot corrosion attack and oxidation. Subsequently, some methods are summarized to alleviate the undesirable effects of the causes, so as to extend the lifetime of TBCs. Regarding the thermal barrier performance of TBCs, the neoteric advances to resist degradation in thermal conductivity of TBCs are reviewed. In addition, some new ceramic materials with superior intrinsic properties are introduced for ultra-high temperature applications. In brief, this review correlates the microstructure and properties of TBCs for finer interpretation and degradation-resistant design on their thermal and mechanical properties, which would benefit the advanced TBCs in future engineering applications.  相似文献

Double-layer thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), including a top ZrO2 layer and an inner CoNiCrAlY layer, were deposited on nickel-based superalloy using supersonic atmospheric plasma spraying (SAPS). Thermal shock resistance of the TBCs between 1200 °C and room temperature was investigated. After thermal shock test, the adhesive strength of the coatings was evaluated through scratch test. The SAPS–TBCs present good thermal shock resistance, exhibiting only 0.26% mass gain up to 150-time thermal cycling. Before thermal cyclic treatment, SAPS–TBCs exhibited a strong adhesion with the absence of the thermally grown oxide (TGO) between out and inner layer. With the increasing of thermal cycles, the TGO layer was formed and its thickness firstly increased and then dropped down. The critical load fell down by about 32% for topcoat–bondcoat adhesion (up to 50 cycles) and 35% or so for TBCs–substrate adhesion (up to 150 cycles) compared to the counterpart of as-sprayed specimens. The strain introduced by the existence of TGO and mixed oxides resulted in a varied adhesion for TBCs on nickel-based alloy during thermal cycling.  相似文献

The main goal of this paper was to evaluate and compare the microstructure and mechanical properties of plasma-sprayed nanostructured and conventional yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). To this end, NiCrAlY bond coat, nanostructured, and conventional YSZ coatings were deposited on Inconel 738LC substrate by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). The mechanical properties of the coating were evaluated using nanoindentation and bonding strength tests. The microstructure and phase composition of the coating were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The nanostructured YSZ coating contained both nanosized particles retained from the powder and microcolumnar grains formed through the resolidification of the molten part of the powder, whereas the microstructure of the conventional YSZ coating consisted of columnar grain splats only. The phase composition of the as-sprayed nanostructured coating consisted of the non-transformable tetragonal phase, while the conventional coating showed the presence of both the monoclinic and non-transformable tetragonal phases. The results of nanoindentation and bonding strength tests indicated that the mechanical properties of the nanostructured coating were better than those of the conventional coating.  相似文献

High-performance thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) made of 4 mol.% Y2O3–stabilized ZrO2 (4YSZ) powder with a spherical thin-walled hollow-shell (STHS) structure exhibited a special microstructure different from the conventional lamellar structure of air plasma-sprayed (APS) coatings. The as-sprayed STHS APS coatings had a completely tetragonal prime (t′) structure and non-lamellated closed-cell structure with high porosity, which resulted in relatively low thermal conductivity (~1.0 W m?1 K?1) and high Vicker's hardness (~6 GPa). The influences of high-temperature aging on the microstructure stability, phase stability, and sintering capability were investigated after long-time heat treatment at different temperatures. The characterization results indicated that the pore content was basically constant, and it was less than 0.5% for sintered linear shrinkage of the STHS coatings after heat treatment at 1500 °C for 100 h. Furthermore, no spalling appeared in the STHS APS coating with the t′ phase structure after 101 thermal cycles of the water-quenching method at 1050 °C, and no monoclinic ZrO2 (m-ZrO2) phase was present in all of the STHS coatings after aging at 1200 °C for 1–1100 h. The excellent anti-sintering properties and phase stability of the STHS coatings are attributed to the closed-pore microstructure and the highly pure t′ phase composition with uniform distribution of ions, respectively. The results suggested that the non-lamellated closed-cell microstructure is beneficial for improving the coating properties, and the results also provide guidelines for microstructure design of TBCs using a feedstock powder.  相似文献

In order to reveal the effect of Sc2O3 and Y2O3 co-doping system on the thermal shock resistance of ZrO2 thermal barrier coatings, Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 thermal barrier coatings (YSZ TBCs) and Sc2O3–Y2O3 co-stabilized ZrO2 thermal barrier coatings (ScYSZ TBCs) were prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying technology. The surface and cross-section micromorphologies of YSZ ceramic coating and ScYSZ ceramic coatings were compared, and their phase composition before and after heat treatment at 1200 °C was analyzed. Whereupon, the thermal shock experiment of the two TBCs at 1100 °C was carried out. The results show that the micromorphologies of YSZ ceramic coating and ScYSZ ceramic coating were not much different, but the porosity of the latter was slightly higher. Before heat treatment, the phase composition of both YSZ ceramic coating and ScYSZ ceramic coating was a single T′ phase. After heat treatment, the phase composition of YSZ ceramic coating was a mixture of M phase, T phase, and C phase, while that of ScYSZ ceramic coating was still a single T′ phase, indicating ScYSZ ceramic coating had better T′ phase stability, which could be attributed to the co-doping system of Sc2O3 and Y2O3 facilitated the formation of defect clusters. In the thermal shock experiment, the thermal shock life of YSZ TBCs was 310 times, while that of ScYSZ TBCs was 370 times, indicating the latter had better thermal shock resistance. The difference in thermal shock resistance could be attributed to the different sintering resistance of ceramic coatings and the different growth rates of thermally grown oxide in the two TBCs. Furthermore, the thermal shock failure modes of YSZ TBCs and ScYSZ TBCs were different, the former was delamination, while the latter was delamination and shallow spallation.  相似文献

In order to improve the thermal shock resistance of MgO-based ceramics, aluminum titanate (Al2TiO5)-toughened MgO-based ceramics were successfully prepared by solid state sintering at 1450 °C and 1550 °C for 3 h starting from MgO and as-synthesized Al2TiO5 powders. The effects of various contents of Al2TiO5 second phase on the sintering behavior and thermal shock resistance of MgO-based ceramics were investigated. The sintering behavior of sintered samples was evaluated by comparing the relative density, apparent porosity, bending strength, phase composition as well as microstructure. The thermal shock resistance of sintered samples was characterized by using the residual bending strength after three thermal cycles and thermal expansion coefficient. The obtained samples with 10 wt% Al2TiO5, which were sintered at 1550 °C for 3 h, showed the highest relative density, lowest apparent porosity as well as optimum bending strength. In addition, the samples added 15 wt% Al2TiO5 at 1550 °C with a dwell time of 3 h were the highest residual bending strength and lowest thermal expansion coefficient. It revealed that the enhancement in thermal shock resistance was ascribed to the reduction of thermal expansion coefficient.  相似文献

To obtain composite ceramics with excellent thermal shock resistance and satisfactory high?temperature service performance for solar thermal transmission pipelines, SiC additive was incorporated into Al2O3?mullite?ZrO2 composite ceramics through a pressureless sintering process. The effect of the SiC additive on thermal shock resistance was studied. Also, the variations in the microstructure and physical properties during thermal cycles at 1300 °C were discussed. The results showed that both thermal shock resistance and thermal cycling performance could be improved by adding 20 wt% SiC. In particular, the sample with 50 wt% Al2O3, 35 wt% Coal Series Kaolin (CSK), 15 wt% partially yttria?stabilized zirconia (PSZ), and 20 wt% SiC additional (denoted as sample A2) exhibited the best overall performance after firing at 1600 °C. Furthermore, the bending strength of sample A2 increased to 124.58 MPa, with an increasing rate of 13.63% after 30 thermal shock cycles. The increase in thermal conductivity and the formation of mullite were the factors behind the enhancement of thermal shock resistance. During the thermal cycles, the oxidation of SiC particles was favorable as it increased the microstructure densification and also facilitated the generation of mullite, which endowed the composite ceramics with a self?reinforcing performance.  相似文献

Zr6Ta2O17 has higher fracture toughness, better phase stability, thermal insulation performance and calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicates (CMAS) attack resistance than yttria-stabilized zirconia (8 YSZ, 7–8 wt%) at temperatures above 1200 °C. However, the thermal expansion coefficients between Zr6Ta2O17 coating and bond coating do not match well. A double-ceramic-layer design is applied to alleviate the thermal stress mismatch. The Zr6Ta2O17/8 YSZ double-ceramic-layer thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). During the thermal shock test, Zr6Ta2O17/8 YSZ double-ceramic-layer TBCs exhibit a better thermal shock resistance than 8 YSZ and Zr6Ta2O17 single-layer TBCs. The thermal shock performance and failure mechanism of TBCs in the thermal shock test are investigated and discussed in detail.  相似文献
