To enhance the tribological performance of Si3N4/TiC ceramics, MoS2/PTFE composite coatings were deposited on the ceramic substrate through spraying method. The micrographs and basic properties of the MoS2/PTFE coated samples were investigated. Dry sliding friction experiments against WC/Co ball were performed with the coated ceramics and traditional ones. These results showed that the composite coatings could significantly reduce the friction coefficient of ceramics, and protect the substrate from adhesion wear. The primary tribological mechanisms of the coated ceramics were abrasive wear, coating spalling and delamination, and the tribological property was transited from slight wear to serious wear with the increase of load because of the lower surface hardness and shear strength. The possible mechanisms for the effects of MoS2/PTFE composite coatings on the friction performance of ceramics were discussed.  相似文献

PTFE coatings were deposited on the Si3N4/TiC ceramic substrate by using spray technology. The surface and cross-section micrographs, adhesive force of coatings with substrate, surface roughness and micro-hardness of the coated ceramics were examined. The friction and wear behaviors of ceramic samples with and without coatings were investigated through carrying out dry sliding friction tests against WC/Co ball. The test results indicated that the coated ceramics exhibited rougher surface and lower micro-hardness, and the PTFE coatings can significantly reduce the surface friction and adhesive wear of ceramics. The friction performance of PTFE-coated sample was affected by applied load due to the lower surface hardness and shear strength of coatings, and the main wear failure mechanisms were abrasion wear, coating delamination and flaking. It can be considered that deposition of PTFE coatings is a promising approach to improve the friction and wear behavior of ceramic substrate.  相似文献

To enhance the tribological properties of Si3N4 based ceramics, surface textures of dimples combined with DLC coatings are fabricated on Si3N4/TiC ceramic surface by nanosecond laser and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). The dry friction and wear performances are evaluated by unidirectional sliding friction tests using a rotary ball-on-disk tribometer. Results reveal that the friction and wear properties of Si3N4/TiC ceramics are significantly enhanced by DLC coatings or dimpled textures, and the DLC coatings combined with dimpled textures show the best efficiency in reducing friction, adhesion and wear. This improvement can be explained by the synergistic effect of DLC coatings and surface textures, and the synergistic mechanisms are attributed to the formation of lubrication film and secondary lubrication, debris capture of dimpled textures, increased surface hardness and mechanical interlocking effect, and reduced contact area.  相似文献

Through microarc oxidation, a ceramic coating is directly formed on the surface of Ti6Al4V alloy, by which its surface property is greatly improved. Microstructure, phase composition and tribological performance of the coatings were characterized. The results showed that the coating with 10-μm thickness is compact in the inner layer and porous in the surface layer. The coating is mainly composed of rutile and anatase TiO2. The tribological behavior of the microarc oxidation ceramic coating under dry sliding against SAE52100 steel was evaluated on a ball-on-disc test rig. The Ti6Al4V alloy was characterized by adhesion wear and scuffing under dry sliding against the steel, while the polished ceramic coating experienced much abated adhesion wear and scuffing under the same testing condition. The polished ceramic coating showed good friction-reducing and fair antiwear ability in dry sliding against the steel. This is attributed to the smooth surface and rutile TiO2.  相似文献

To improve the dry friction behavior of traditional hard coatings, MoS2/PTFE lubricating coatings were prepared on the PVD TiN-coated cemented carbide using spray method. The influences of MoS2/PTFE lubricating coatings on the primary characteristics of TiN coatings were investigated. Reciprocating sliding tests were carried out with the TiN–MoS2/PTFE coated specimen (T-M-P) under dry sliding conditions, and the tribological behaviors were compared to those of the TiN-coated one (T-N). The test results indicated that the adhesion force of coatings with substrate for T-M-P specimen increased, the surface micro-hardness, roughness and friction coefficient significantly decreased. Meanwhile, the surface adhesions and abrasion grooves of T-M-P specimen were reduced, and the main wear forms of T-M-P were abrasion wear and coating delamination. The MoS2/PTFE lubricating coatings can be considered effective to improve the friction properties of traditional hard coatings.  相似文献

The research presented in this paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of different surface roughness and lubrication conditions on the interfacial tribological properties between silicon carbide (SiC) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics, particularly for providing insight into the mechanisms of how graphene reduces the friction and wear rate. The worn groove topography and surface composition were characterised in detail with 3D laser measuring microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The tribological test results on the UMT-TriboLab show that a smooth initial surface is more likely to obtain a low friction coefficient and wear rate under water lubrication. The proper initial surface roughness for SiC and Si3N4 ceramics is approximately Ra 10?nm, and it will be lower in an alcohol or graphene aqueous solution. A large load does not worsen the tribological behaviour of a Si3N4 ball sliding against a SiC disk, and it reduces the friction coefficient and wear rate. Among the five lubrication states of dry friction, dry graphene lubrication, water lubrication, graphene solution lubrication, and self-developed graphene lubrication, the self-developed graphene lubricant can exhibit an ultra-low friction coefficient of 0.009 and ultra-low wear rate of 1.69?×?10?7?mm3/N·m. The excellent tribological property of the graphene-coated ceramic surface helps the prepared lubricant to decrease the friction coefficient effectively. Furthermore, the graphene film can protect the SiC from being oxidised by water under the tribo-activated action, and therefore, lead to ultra-low wear rate under low friction condition. Alcohol improves the tribological property of the self-developed graphene lubricant, mainly because of the good wettability between graphene and ethanol. The self-developed graphene lubricant can be applied in water-lubricated ceramic bearings and motorised precision spindles.  相似文献

The present work examines the applicability of DLC and WC/C low friction coatings on Al2O3/TiCN based mixed ceramic cutting tools for the dry and hard turning of AISI 52100 steel (62 HRC). The characterization of coated tools reveals that the coatings retain very low values of surface roughness, whereas the DLC coating exhibits much higher microhardness when compared to the WC/C coating. On the other hand, the WC/C coating exhibit a coarse surface morphology virtually due to the tungsten doping. Later, continuous turning tests were executed with the help of coated and uncoated cutting tools under dry cutting conditions, and their performance was investigated in terms of machining forces, cutting temperature and tool wear. Coating delamination by flaking and peeling is quite prominent in the case of both the coatings; however, it is less severe for the WC/C coated tool. The coatings help to reduce machining forces, cutting temperatures and tool wear, but the performance of coated tools converge towards uncoated tool as the cutting speed, and feed rate is increased. Both the coatings prevent the development of cracks near the cutting edge with WC/C coating exhibiting superior wear behavior basically due to its multilayered structure and better thermal stability. Moreover, the tested low friction coatings don't serve as thermal barriers and only the lubrication generated due to graphitization at the chip-tool interface is mostly responsible for the improved machining performance.  相似文献

Plasma spray deposition of Al2O3 is a well-established technique for thick ceramic coatings on various substrates to shield them from corrosion and wear. Owing to its high hardness, aluminum oxide is known to protect stainless steel substrates from wear. However, the plasma process requires optimization for desired coating thickness and adhesion strength. It is also necessary to understand the sensitivity of friction and wear resistance of the deposited coating on exposed environment for evaluation of service life. The study offers comprehensive investigation on plasma process parameters for the development of strongly adherent aluminium oxide coatings on SS 316L substrate. Impact of environment like dry air and dry nitrogen on tribological properties of the coatings was also investigated. Dense adherent coatings of alumina could be deposited on SS 316L at a plasma power of 20 kW with an intermediate bond coat of NiCrAlY to enhance the adhesion properties. The effects of stand-off distance and bond coat thickness on adhesion strength were additionally examined. Further, the coatings were characterised for phase composition, microstructure, microhardness and wear resistance potential. Reciprocating wear tests of the coatings were carried out using ball on disc reciprocating tribometer at different loading conditions (5, 10 and 15 N) at constant (5 Hz) sliding frequency. Unlike the coefficient of friction (COF), wear volume was found to increase with an increase in normal load. These adherent coatings revealed promising properties for the applications where the tribological failure of SS 316L in dry air or dry nitrogen environment is to be controlled.  相似文献

Tribological properties of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating with an adhesive tungsten-containing DLC (W-DLC) layer were investigated. The coatings were deposited onto AISI316L steel substrates and Si wafers using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and tungsten co-sputtering of the metal target. Methane and argon gases were used as the precursor of the coatings. In this study, three types of coatings were evaluated: DLC/W-DLC on AISI316L (DLC-1), DLC/W-DLC on Si wafer (DLC-2), and DLC on Si wafer (DLC-3). The structural characterizations were performed by transmission electron microscopy and tapping mode atomic force microscopy. At the boundary between the W-DLC layer and the AISI316L substrate, microscopic decohesion or delamination was not observed. The surface roughness of the DLC-1 coating was greater than that of the DLC-2 coating. This feature was derived from the surface roughness of the initial surface of the AISI316L substrate. Friction tests were performed using a rotation-type ball-on-flat configuration tribometer. The observed friction of the DLC-1 coating was unstable compared with the DLC-2 or DLC-3 coatings. This was due to wear debris which had risen to the friction surface resulting in unstable friction on the DLC-1 coating. During the friction studies, the top DLC layer was removed from the adhesive W-DLC layer because the adhesive strength at this part was not enough. In order to achieve the low and stable friction of the DLC coating with the W-DLC layer on AISI316L, it is necessary to improve the smoothness of the surface and the adhesion between the DLC coating and the W-DLC layer.  相似文献

In the present work, AlCrN coating was deposited on Al2O3/TiCN ceramic inserts with varying thin film thickness using physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique. The thickness, surface morphology, chemical composition, hardness and adhesion strength of the coating to the substrate were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), micro-indentations and scratch tests respectively. The machining performance of uncoated and coated tools was investigated in hard turning of AISI 52100 steel (62 HRC) under dry environment. The cutting behavior was analyzed in terms of machining forces, tool temperature, wear, friction and chip morphology. Further, a 3D finite element model with hybrid friction criterion has been adopted to support the experimental findings. The results revealed that coating/substrate adhesion and edge radius were the deciding criteria for the machining performance of coated tools with 3 µm coating thickness tool exhibiting best turning performance on Al2O3/TiCN mixed ceramic insert.  相似文献

For tribological applications, the low friction coefficient and high microhardness of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films give significant advantages in cutting and forming non-ferrous materials. The inherently large residual stress of DLC films, however, prevents the depositing of thicker films. This study designed and implemented a compound interface, comprising a series of metal, metal nitride, and metal carbonitride interlayers deposited in a graded structure, between the DLC (a metal-doped a-C:H) film and M2 steel substrates. The tribological performance of the interface was evaluated using a scratch tester and ball-on-disk tribometer. Meanwhile, the failure mechanism of DLC deposited on M2 steel substrates was examined using SEM/EDS and TEM microscopy. Experimental results demonstrate an improved DLC hard coating with superior adhesion strength on the steel substrates.  相似文献

Cemented carbides coated with diamond layers are promising materials for mills in the wood industry. Therefore, a study of the tribological properties of the contact between this material and wood is interesting and important. Wood is a specific material with a highly anisotropic structure, which causes roughness of its surface. For example, the friction coefficient (μ) of wood in contact with polished steel coated with a smooth DLC layer, has a relatively high value of μ=0.2–0.5. Cemented carbides, as manufactured for tools for wood milling purposes with roughness Rz=0.66 μm, have been modified with a nanocrystalline diamond film (NCD) using the RF PACVD method. The surface of the NCD coating showed ‘sharp hills’ morphology, but the surface roughness of cemented carbide decreased slightly after coating. The friction was very high (μ=0.7–0.8 at v=1 m/s; FN=60 N) and it depended on the species of wood. When examining oak and poplar using carbides coated with the thickest NCD layer and a DLC film on top, this value decreased by 30% with respect to that of uncoated carbides. For fibreboard against NCD, the value was increased. Comparing the friction of NCD against wood to its friction against steel, titanium and aluminium alloys, we could see that the roughness of wood was the main factor which determined its tribological behaviour. SiC-B4C ceramic composites with different ratios of SiC to B4C were produced. The relative density, mechanical properties, initial surface characteristics, dry sliding tribological properties against SiC ball and worn surface characteristics of the SiC-B4C ceramics were studied. Results of dry sliding tribological tests showed that, 40 wt. % SiC-60 wt. % B4C ceramic composite had the best tribological properties in SiC-B4C ceramic composites. A relief structure with height difference of 10−30 nm between B4C grains and SiC grains is formed after dry sliding. This relief structure, on the one hand, can reduce real contact area on interface, decreasing adhesion effect, and on the other hand, can fix or trap the wear pieces formed on sliding interface during the dry sliding process, reducing the abrasive wear. However, there is a limit to the beneficial influence of decreased adhesion effect and reduced abrasive wear, and an optimum proportion of relief structure. Pores can also fix or trap some wear pieces, reducing the abrasive wear. Under the condition of strong bonding between SiC grains and B4C grains, the SiC-B4C ceramic composites with higher porosity can obtain better tribological properties. In addition, it is observed by AFM that the depth of scratch on B4C grains is shallower than that on SiC grains. Hence, it is demonstrated by micro scale measurement that the wear rate of B4C is lower than that of SiC in this study.  相似文献

For improving the bio-mechanical properties of articulated and solid implants diamond-like carbon (DLC) is a very promising coating material because it is chemically inert, extremely hard, wear resistant and biocompatible. These possibilities are reviewed. The high quality (sp3-fraction ∼80%) hydrogen-free DLC coatings tested were deposited (5 μm/h per 20 cm2) with a filtered pulsed arc discharge method. Adhesion problems were solved with proper plasma energy control and suitable intermediate layers. With a hip simulator, loads up to 1300 kg on DLC-coated (50–200 μm) joints were used without failure. Under a 200-kg load the coefficient of friction was 0.05, 0.05 and 0.14 for DLC-coated, metal–polyethylene and metal–metal pairs, respectively. Diverse tribological tests show that the wear in DLC-coated metal joints is 105–106 times lower than in conventional metal–polyethylene and metal–metal pairs. The wear of the plastic acetabular cup is reduced at least 10 times if the metal ball of the joint is coated with DLC. On a commonly used CoCrMo alloy 1 μm DLC decreased the corrosion rate of the substrate by a factor of 105 when exposed to a saline solution equivalent to the body fluid in 37°C for 2 years. Preliminary animal tests indicate benign biological response.  相似文献

Although the friction and wear behavior of plasma sprayed aluminum matrix ceramic coatings have been extensively discussed in the last decades, only few researches have been carried out the wear mechanisms sliding against different pairs. The tribological behaviors of plasma sprayed Al2O3 coating sliding against ZrO2, Si3N4, Al2O3 and stainless steel balls in air were comparatively investigated in this study. It was showed that Al2O3 coating sliding against different counterparts exhibited diverse tribological behaviors, which could be mainly ascribed to the different mechanical properties of counterparts. Meanwhile, the tribochemical reactions influenced the friction performances significantly. Moreover, the transform of γ-Al2O3 to α-Al2O3 occurred during the friction, which was closely related to the coefficient of friction and thermal conductivities of counterparts. The main wear of Al2O3 coating sliding against ceramic materials resulted from the brittle fracture and abrasive wear. While it was dominated by adhesive wear when sliding against stainless steel, and accompanied with abrasive wear.  相似文献

This work is part of a program on composites used in thermoelectric devices. Tribological properties of dynamic vulcanizate blends of polypropylene and ethylene‐propylene‐diene rubber filled with 5 wt% of microscale powder have been studied. The microscale thermal‐shock‐resistant ceramic filler contains α‐Al2O3, mullite (3Al2O3 · 2SiO2 or 2Al2O3SiO2), β‐spodumene glass‐ceramic and aluminium titanate. We found that our ceramic particles are abrasive; they cause strong abrasion of softer steel ball surfaces during dry sliding friction. To overcome the difficulty of particle dispersion and adhesion, the filler was modified through grafting using three types of organic molecules. Dry sliding friction was measured using four types of counter‐surfaces: tungsten carbide, Si3N2, 302 steel and 440 steel. Thermoplastic vulcanizate filled with neat ceramic powder shows the lowest friction compared to composites containing the same but surface‐treated powder. We introduce a ‘bump’ model to explain the tribological responses of our composites. ‘Naked’ or untreated ceramic particles protrude from the polymer surface and cause a decrease of the contact area compared to neat polymer. The ball partner surface has only a small contact area with the bumps. As contact surface area decreases, so does friction and the amount of heat generated during sliding friction testing. Chemical coupling of the ceramic to the matrix smoothens the bumps and increases the contact surface, giving a parallel increase in friction. Copyright © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Ternary materials with compositions in the B–C–N system offer properties of great interest. In particular, mechanical and tribological properties are expected to be excellent, as they can combine some of the specific properties of BN, B4C and C3N4. In this paper, BCN thin films deposited by r.f. magnetron sputtering are characterized by their micromechanical and microtribological behavior. BCN coatings with different composition were obtained by varying the N2/Ar proportion in the sputtering gas. Hardness and elastic modulus of the coatings were measured by nanoindentation. The adhesion and friction coefficient against diamond have been evaluated by microscratch and the coatings have been characterized in their wear behavior at the nanometric scale. These mechanical and tribological properties have been related to film composition and structure, which have been studied in a previous work. It is found that the measured wear resistance at the nanometric scale is directly related to the coating microhardness rather than friction behavior or adhesion of the coating to the substrate, which are the determinant factors in the macroscopic scale wear behavior.  相似文献

In order to disclose friction and wear mechanism of TiB2-HfC ceramic, tribological behaviour of TiB2-HfC ceramic sliding against YG8, 316 stainless steel (316) and TA2 were investigated. Friction coefficients between TiB2-HfC ceramics and these materials decreased not only with an increase of sliding speed but also with an increase of normal load, respectively. Wear rates of TiB2-HfC ceramics sliding against these materials increased with an increase of sliding speed as well as with an increase of normal load, respectively. B2O3, TiO2 and HfO2 formed in TiB2-HfC ceramics sliding against these materials. In addition, intergranular and transgranular microcracks and WO3 appeared in the worn surface after the ceramic slid against YG8; lamellar structures like fish scale, areas of exposed grains, pits, FexOy and Cr2O3 existed in the worn surface after the ceramic slid against 316; ribbon-like structures, areas of exposed grains, wear particles and furrows existed in the worn surface after the ceramic slid against TA2. Besides oxidation wear, abrasive wear played an important role in TiB2-HfC ceramic sliding against YG8, while adhesive wear and abrasive wear played a dominant role in TiB2-HfC ceramic sliding against 316 or TA2.  相似文献

Al2O3-TiB2-TiC ceramic coatings with high microhardness and wear resistance were fabricated on the surfaces of carbon steel substrates by laser cladding using different coating formulations. The microstructures of these ceramic coatings with the different coating formulations were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrometer. The wear resistance and wear mechanism were analyzed using Vickers microhardness and sliding wear tests. The results showed that when the amount of independent Al2O3 was increased to 30%, the ceramic coatings had a favorable surface formation quality and strong metallurgical bond with the steel matrix. The cladding layer was uniformly and densely organized. The black massive Al2O3, white granular TiB2, and TiC distributed on the Fe substrate significantly increased the microhardness and wear resistance. The laser cladding ceramic coating had many hard strengthening phases, and thus resisted the extrusion of rigid particles in frictional contact parts. Therefore, the wear process ended with a “cutting-off” loss mechanism.  相似文献

This paper presents a tribological investigation of Si3N4-hBN composite ceramics using synthetic lubricants. The friction and wear properties of Si3N4-hBN ceramic composites sliding against TC4 titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) were investigated via pin-on-disc tests. An axial compressive load of 10?N was applied with a sliding speed of 0.73?m/s. Three different lubrication conditions including simulated body fluid (SBF), physiological saline (PS) and bovine serum (BS) were used. For SBF lubrication, the friction coefficients and wear rates of Si3N4-hBN/Ti6Al4V pairs were varying with the increase of hBN contents. When using 20?vol% hBN, the average friction coefficient and wear rate of Si3N4 (0.28 and 3.5?× 10?4 mm3 N?1 m?1) were as good as that of the pure Si3N4 (0.34 and 3.69?× 10?4 mm3 N?1 m?1). Meanwhile, the processability of the Si3N4 material would be improved by adding hBN. It was worth to mention that when using 30?vol% hBN, the tribological performance of bearing combination deteriorated with extensive wear from the ceramic pin. This may due to the reduction of mechanical property caused by adding hBN and the occurring of tribochemical reaction. According to the worn surface examination and characterization, the main wear mechanism was abrasive and adhesion wear. Scratch grooves were observed on the metal disc, and metallic transform layers were seen on the ceramic pin. Moreover, surface lubrication film consisting of TiO2, SiO2·nH2O, Mg(OH)2, and H3BO3 were formed on the metal disc when using SBF lubrication and 20?vol% hBN content. Among the three lubrication conditions, SBF generally led to the best tribological performance. No surface lubrication film was found during BS and PS lubrications. This may be resulted from the absence of essential ions to promote the formation of surface lubrication film (PS lubrication) and the formation of a protein barrier on the surface of the metal disc (BS lubrication).  相似文献
