Abstract— Several TFT‐LCD devices exhibiting high image quality have been developed and commercialized, overcoming the narrow viewing‐angle characteristics of conventional twisted‐nematic (TN) devices. Nevertheless, no single device dominates large‐sized TFT‐LCDs. In this paper, the product issues of existing LC devices related to manufacturing process and performance are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract— A novel pixel memory using an integrated voltage‐loss‐compensation (VLC) circuit has been proposed for ultra‐low‐power TFT‐LCDs, which can increase the number of gray‐scale levels for a single subpixel using an analog voltage gray‐scale technique. The new pixel with a VLC circuit is integrated under a small reflective electrode in a high‐transmissive aperture‐ratio (39%) 3.17‐in. HVGA transflective panel by using a standard low‐temperature‐polysilicon process based on 1.5‐μm rules. No additional process steps are required. The VLC circuit in each pixel enables simultaneous refresh with a very small change in voltage, resulting in a two‐orders‐of‐magnitude reduction in circuit power for a 64‐color image display. The advanced transflective TFT‐LCD using the newly proposed pixel can display high‐quality multi‐color images anytime and anywhere, due to its low power consumption and good outdoor readability.  相似文献

Abstract— To improve the display quality and yield of the TFT‐LCD driver IC, non‐volatile multiple‐time‐programmable (MTP) memory, which consists of an EEPROM cell and our proposed sense amplifier and power control circuit (SP), was integrated into a TFT‐LCD driver IC. The proposed SP has a 30% smaller layout area and a 18% faster response time compared to that of the conventional SP. The proposed SP also has lower power consumption because it does not use a static current. The TFT‐LCD quality was also improved by tuning the characteristics of the driver IC and the panel with the VREF, OSC, and VCOM blocks, using non‐volatile MTP memory. When the display quality improved, the yield also improved, along with a reduction in the failure ratio of the display module, which consists of the driver IC and the panel. As a result, the TFT‐LCD driver IC with the non‐volatile MTP memory demonstrated improved display quality and a higher yield compared to conventional driver ICs without such a memory.  相似文献

Abstract— Single‐crystal‐like silicon (SLS) technology is the most cost‐effective laser‐crystallization process ever invented. The throughput of the SLS process is about two times higher than that of the conventional excimer‐laser annealing (ELA) method. In addition, the performance of the TFTs fabricated by the SLS process is among the best utilized in mass production. Various TFT‐LCDs employing SLS technology, which included a 1.02‐in. full SOG LCD using an icon display for the sub‐display of cellular phones, a 1.9‐in. qVGA TFT‐LCD with a low‐power analog interface employing a low‐voltage driving scheme, and a 3.0‐in. VGA TFT‐LCD compatible with the 480i data format without additional signal processing were developed. Because the SLS process enables us to achieve highly uniform and reliable transistors, it can be effectively utilized in the mass production of mobile TFT‐LCDs with low power consumption and enhanced image quality.  相似文献

Abstract— Bistable displays are known to have low‐power consumption, but they usually lack the ability to display full‐color video‐rate images. Operating active‐matrix liquid‐crystal displays (AMLCDs) with an ultra‐wide refresh‐rate range, down to ~1 Hz, can lower the power consumption to that of bistable devices and offer video rates as well. A SiOx‐layer‐based liquid‐crystal (LC) alignment technique is studied here to overcome the ion problems typically encountered with low‐refresh‐rate devices. The effect of ions on the voltage‐holding ratio (VHR) and residual DC voltage (RDC) with SiOx‐based LC alignment is compared with those for polyimide‐based LC alignment. It is found that only SiOx alignment provides high VHR and small RDC, with good stability over time. Therefore, it is shown that SiOx alignment is an excellent candidate for low‐power AMLCDs operated with an ultra‐wide refresh‐rate range.  相似文献

One of the most critical areas in the manufacturing process for FPD panels or shadow masks for CRTs is lithography. Most existing lithography technologies require high‐quality large‐area photomasks. The requirements on these photomasks include positioning accuracy (registration) and repeatability (overlay), systematic image quality errors (“mura” or display quality), and resolution (minimum feature size). The general trend toward higher resolution and improved performance, e.g., for TFT desktop monitors, has put a strong focus on the specifications for large‐area‐display photomasks. This article intends to give an overview of the dominant issues for large‐area‐display photomasks, and illustrates differences compared with other applications. The article will also present state‐of‐the‐art methods and trends. In particular, the aspects of positioning accuracy over large areas and systematic image‐quality errors will be described. New qualitative and objective methods have been developed as means to capture systematic image‐quality errors. Results indicating that errors below 25 nm can be found early in the manufacturing process is presented, thus allowing inspection for visual effects before the actual display is completed. Positioning accuracy below 400 nm (3 sigma) over 720 × 560 mm have been achieved. These results will in the future be extended up toward 1 × 1 m for generation 4 in TFT‐LCD production.  相似文献

Abstract— Large‐sized active‐matrix organic light‐emitting diode (AMOLED) displays require high‐frame‐rate driving technology to achieve high‐quality 3‐D images. However, higher‐frame‐rate driving decreases the time available for compensating Vth in the pixel circuit. Therefore, a new method needs to be developed to compensate the pixel circuit in a shorter time interval. In this work, image quality of a 14‐in. quarter full‐high‐definition (qFHD) AMOLED driven at a frame rate of over 240 Hz was investigated. It was found that image degradation is related to the time available for compensation of the driving TFT threshold voltage. To solve this problem, novel AMOLED pixel circuits for high‐speed operation are proposed to compensate threshold‐voltage variation at frame rates above 240 Hz. When Vth is varied over ±1.0 V, conventional pixel circuits showed current deviations of 22.8 and 39.8% at 240 and 480 Hz, respectively, while the new pixel circuits showed deviations of only 2.6 and 5.4%.  相似文献

Abstract— Multi‐view displays employ an optical layer which distributes the light of an underlying TFT‐LCD panel in different directions. Certain properties of the layer create specific artifacts, such as ghost images, moiré patterns, and masking. The layer was modeled as an image‐processing channel, and the display parameters related with the model were identified, which are importantfor the design of image‐processing algorithms for artifact mitigation. The identified parameters are interleaving pattern, angular visibility, and frequency throughput of the display. A methodology for deriving these parameters for an arbitrary LCD‐based multi‐view display are presented, which does not require precisely positioned measurement equipment. As a case study, measurement and modeling results for a particular multi‐view display are also presented.  相似文献

Thin‐film transistor (TFT) array testing technique has been used, which provides defect detection capability to control the yield of the TFT process. In the past, several defect inspection technologies have been developed and applied for the TFT array testing. When the TFT array pixel size is getting smaller and the resolution is higher, they also encounter the performance limitation on detecting the critical defect in this small‐pixel TFT array and facing a limited testing requirement. For medical display applications, the display pixels on an array panel are getting smaller and smaller; therefore, defect detection is getting more important and critical for managing yield with quality. In this study, a novel approach for defect detection was proposed. Here, the proposed voltage imaging technique is used for the TFT array test, and it provides better small‐pixel TFT array defect detection capability. The experimental results show that by using the voltage imaging technique, detecting critical point defect of TFT array can be effectively improved. And the detected small‐pixel size of TFT array panels can be smaller than 55 µm of an advanced medical display.  相似文献

Low‐temperature poly‐Si TFT data drivers for an SVGA a‐Si TFT‐LCD panel have been developed. The data drivers include shift registers, sample‐and‐hold circuits, and operational amplifiers, and drive LCD panels using a line‐at‐a‐time addressing method. To reduce the power consumption of the shift register, a dot‐clock control circuit has been developed. Using this circuit, the power consumption of the shift register has been reduced to 36% of that of conventional circuits. To cancel the offset voltage generated by the operational amplifier, an offset cancellation circuit for low‐temperature poly‐Si TFTs has been developed. This circuit is also able to avoid any unstable operation of the operational amplifier. Using this circuit, the offset voltage has been reduced to one‐third of the value without using the offset cancellation circuit. These data drivers have been connected to an LCD panel and have realized an SVGA display on a 12.1‐in. a‐Si TFT‐LCD panel.  相似文献

Abstract— A novel reflective display [Quick‐Response Liquid Powder Display (QR‐LPD®)], has been developed. This paper‐like display has the advantages of outstanding image stability, easy viewing, low‐power consumption, and a high‐response time. QR‐LPD® will be promoted, initially, for use as electronic price‐tag displays for merchandise. In addition, QR‐LPD® is suitable for flexible display applications because it does not require TFT arrays or a high‐temperature process while maintaining an excellent paper‐like image as well as glass‐type display compatibility.  相似文献

A low‐power‐consumption thin‐film‐transistor liquid‐crystal display (TFT‐LCD) with dynamic memory cells embedded in each pixel using low‐temperature poly‐Si technology has been developed. By holding data in the memory, the operating rate of the data driver can be dramatically reduced to 4 Hz. Eight levels of gray scale with low power consumption can be achieved by using the area‐ratio gray‐scale method. This TFT‐LCD can be used for displaying fine still images, with low power consumption.  相似文献

Collaborative slide image viewing systems are becoming increasingly important in pathology applications such as telepathology and E‐learning. Despite rapid advances in computing and imaging technology, current digital pathology systems have limited performance with respect to remote viewing of whole slide images on desktop or mobile computing devices. In this paper we present a novel digital pathology client–server system that supports collaborative viewing of multi‐plane whole slide images over standard networks using multi‐touch‐enabled clients. Our system is built upon a standard HTTP web server and a MySQL database to allow multiple clients to exchange image and metadata concurrently. We introduce a domain‐specific image‐stack compression method that leverages real‐time hardware decoding on mobile devices. It adaptively encodes image stacks in a decorrelated colour space to achieve extremely low bitrates (0.8 bpp) with very low loss of image quality. We evaluate the image quality of our compression method and the performance of our system for diagnosis with an in‐depth user study.  相似文献

Abstract— The plasma‐display panel (PDP) is a type of flat‐panel display that can display a high‐quality image. However, when moving images are displayed, annoying disturbances such as false contour noise occurs. This noise is called dynamic false contour (DFC). To achieve a higher‐quality image, DFC has to be reduced. Therefore, a new method to reduce DFC is proposed. To find a way to reduce DFC, a new evaluation value for it has been defined: the evaluation value of dynamic false contour (EVDFC). This value is defined on the basis of a person's subjective evaluation. By applying this value, the cause that generates DFC can be identified. On the basis of these studies, a new method for reducing DFC by applying frame‐rate control (FRC) with suppression of the side effect is proposed. This improved method can be used to provide high‐quality images.  相似文献

Abstract— Multi‐primary‐color (MPC) display technology is one of the fastest emerging research areas in recent years. Wide‐color‐gamut display devices have been required for visually sufficient and/or accurate color reproduction. It is well known that MPC displays can reproduce accurate colors with high efficiency. In addition, not only the image‐quality improvement but some other performance of display devices is also required for display devices. This paper reviews achievements in MPC display technologies and focuses on the benefits of MPC displays: power‐savings and high resolution.  相似文献

Abstract— We have developed a 470 × 235‐ppi poly‐Si TFT‐LCD with a novel pixel arrangement, called HDDP (horizontally double‐density pixels), for high‐resolution 2‐D and 3‐D autostereoscopic displays. 3‐D image quality is especially high in a lenticular‐lens‐equipped 3‐D mode because both the horizontal and vertical resolutions are high, and because these resolutions are equal. 3‐D and 2‐D images can be displayed simultaneously in the same picture. In addition, 3‐D images can be displayed anywhere and 2‐D characters can be made to appear at different depths with perfect legibility. No switching of 2‐D/3‐D modes is necessary, and the design's thin and uncomplicated structure makes it especially suitable for mobile terminals.  相似文献

Abstract— An improved AMOLED with an a‐Si TFT backplane based on a unique structure is reported. The new structure is refered to as a dual‐plate OLED display (DOD). While a top‐emission OLED array is directly fabricated on a TFT backplane, the DOD consists of an upper OLED substrate and a lower TFT substrate, which are independently fabricated. Because the OLED substrate, which is fabricated through the process flow of bottom emission, is attached to the TFT substrate, the light is emitted in the opposite direction to the TFT backplane. The DOD enables the design of large‐sized TFTs and a complicated pixel circuit. It can also not only achieve higher uniformity in luminance in large‐sized displays due to the low electrical resistance of the common electrode, but also wider viewing angles.  相似文献

We have developed a 6‐bit D/A converter and amplifier integrated low‐temperature poly‐Si TFT‐LCD in which an integrated signal‐line driver is driven by a 5‐V power supply. We have employed a D/A converter including a new capacitor array and an original amplifier comprised of serially connected comparators to achieve high accuracy. The D/A converter performs gamma correction using upper significant bits of input data. Control signals for these circuits were generated by the integrated timing circuit. These advances in integration have been achieved for the first time using 3‐μm design rule and improved LTPS TFT technologies and provide an advanced display system with lower power consumption, smaller module size, and higher durability.  相似文献

Abstract— High‐performance solution‐processed oxide‐semiconductor (OS) thin‐film transistors (TFTs) and their application to a TFT backplane for active‐matrix organic light‐emitting‐diode (AMOLED) displays are reported. For this work, bottom‐gated TFTs having spin‐coated amorphous In‐Zn‐O (IZO) active layers formed at 450°C have been fabricated. A mobility (μ) as high as 5.0 cm2/V‐sec, ?0.5 V of threshold voltage (VT), 0.7 V/dec of subthreshold swing (SS), and 6.9 × 108 of on‐off current ratio were obtained by using an etch‐stopper (ES) structure TFT. TFTs exhibited uniform characteristics within 150 × 150‐mm2 substrates. Based on these results, a 2.2‐in. AMOLED display driven by spin‐coated IZO TFTs have also been fabricated. In order to investigate operation instability, a negative‐bias‐temperature‐stress (NBTS) test was carried out at 60°C in ambient air. The IZO‐TFT showed ?2.5 V of threshold‐voltage shift (ΔVT) after 10,800 sec of stress time, comparable with the level (ΔVT = ?1.96 V) of conventional vacuum‐deposited a‐Si TFTs. Also, other issues regarding solution‐processed OS technology, including the instability, lowering process temperature, and printable devices are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract— The state of the art of large‐area low‐temperature TFT‐LCDs will be reported in this paper. High‐performance poly‐Si TFTs are expected to realize various applications such as system display where various signal‐processing functions are added to the display. In the past few years, low‐temperature poly‐Si thin‐film‐transistor (LTPS TFT) technology has made great progress, especially in the areas of excimer laser annealing (ELA) of high‐quality poly‐Si film, ion doping for large‐area doping, and high‐quality gate SiO2 film formation by using the low‐temperature PE‐CVD method. Also, technology trends and possible applications, such as a system displays, will be discussed.  相似文献
