The energy and exergy flow for a space heating systems of a typical residential building of natural ventilation system with different heat generation plants have been modeled and compared. The aim of this comparison is to demonstrate which system leads to an efficient conversion and supply of energy/exergy within a building system. The analysis of a fossil plant heating system has been done with a typical building simulation software IDA–ICE. A zone model of a building with natural ventilation is considered and heat is being supplied by condensing boiler. The same zone model is applied for other cases of building heating systems where power generation plants are considered as ground and air source heat pumps at different operating conditions. Since there is no inbuilt simulation model for heat pumps in IDA–ICE, different COP curves of the earlier studies of heat pumps are taken into account for the evaluation of the heat pump input and output energy. The outcome of the energy and exergy flow analysis revealed that the ground source heat pump heating system is better than air source heat pump or conventional heating system. The realistic and efficient system in this study “ground source heat pump with condenser inlet temperature 30 °C and varying evaporator inlet temperature” has roughly 25% less demand of absolute primary energy and exergy whereas about 50% high overall primary coefficient of performance and overall primary exergy efficiency than base case (conventional system). The consequence of low absolute energy and exergy demands and high efficiencies lead to a sustainable building heating system.  相似文献

The paper brings new evidence on the impact of separate mechanical ventilation system on the annual energy and exergy performance of several design alternatives of residential heating systems, when they are designed for a house in Montreal. Mathematical models of residential heating, ventilation and domestic hot water (HVAC–DHW) systems, which are needed for this purpose, are developed and furthermore implemented in the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) environment. The Coefficient of Performance and the exergy efficiency are estimated as well as the entropy generation and exergy destruction of the overall system. The equivalent greenhouse gas emissions due to the on-site and off-site use of primary energy sources are also estimated. The addition of a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery to any HVAC–DHW system discussed in the paper increases the energy efficiency; however, it decreases the exergy efficiency, which indicates a potential long-term damaging impact on the natural environment. Therefore, the use of a separate mechanical ventilation system in a house should be considered with caution, and recommended only when other means for controlling the indoor air quality cannot be applied.

An underwater compressed air energy storage (UWCAES) system is integrated into an island energy system. Both energy and exergy analyses are conducted to scrutinize the performance of the UWCAES system. The analyses reveal that a round‐trip efficiency of 58.9% can be achieved. However, these two analyses identify different directions for further improvement. The heat exchangers, expanders, compressors, electric motors, and generators account for the most exergy destruction. A sensitivity analysis is also conducted to investigate the importance of different input parameters on the round‐trip exergy efficiency of the UWCAES system. The results of both local and global analyses show that the round‐trip exergy efficiency is most sensitive to the isentropic efficiency of the expanders and compressors, and the efficiencies of the electric motors and generators. The impacts of the heat exchangers, the self‐discharge rate of the air accumulator, the inner diameter of the pneumatic pipelines, and the insulation thickness of the hot‐oil tank on the round‐trip exergy efficiency are shown to be highly nonlinear.  相似文献

Detailed heat exchanger designs are determined by matching intermediate temperatures in a large-scale Claude refrigeration process for liquefaction of hydrogen with a capacity of 125 tons/day. A comparison is made of catalyst filled plate-fin and spiral-wound heat exchangers by use of a flexible and robust modeling framework for multi-stream heat exchangers that incorporates conversion of ortho-to para-hydrogen in the hydrogen feed stream, accurate thermophysical models and a distributed resolution of all streams and wall temperatures. Maps of the local exergy destruction in the heat exchangers are presented, which enable the identification of several avenues to improve their performances. The heat exchanger duties vary between 1 and 31 MW and their second law energy efficiencies vary between 72.3% and 96.6%. Due to geometrical constraints imposed by the heat exchanger manufacturers, it is necessary to employ between one to four parallel plate-fin heat exchanger modules, while it is possible to use single modules in series for the spiral-wound heat exchangers. Due to the lower surface density and heat transfer coefficients in the spiral-wound heat exchangers, their weights are 2–14 times higher than those of the plate-fin heat exchangers. In the first heat exchanger, hydrogen feed gas is cooled from ambient temperature to about 120 K by use of a single mixed refrigerant cycle. Here, most of the exergy destruction occurs when the high-pressure mixed refrigerant enters the single-phase regime. A dual mixed refrigerant or a cascade process holds the potential to remove a large part of this exergy destruction and improve the efficiency. In many of the heat exchangers, uneven local exergy destruction reveals a potential for further optimization of geometrical parameters, in combination with process parameters and constraints. The framework presented makes it possible to compare different sources of exergy destruction on equal terms and enables a qualified specification on the maximum allowed pressure drops in the streams. The mole fraction of para-hydrogen is significantly closer to the equilibrium composition through the entire process for the spiral-wound heat exchangers due to the longer residence time. This reduces the exergy destruction from the conversion of ortho-hydrogen and results in a higher outlet mole fraction of para-hydrogen from the process.Because of the higher surface densities of the plate-fin heat exchangers, they are the preferred technology for hydrogen liquefaction, unless a higher conversion to heat exchange ratio is desired.  相似文献

In this paper, we deal with the energy and exergy analysis of a fossil plant and ground and air source heat pump building heating system at two different dead-state temperatures. A zone model of a building with natural ventilation is considered and heat is being supplied by condensing boiler. The same zone model is applied for heat pump building heating system. Since energy and exergy demand are key parameters to see which system is efficient at what reference temperature, we did a study on the influence of energy and exergy efficiencies. In this regard, a commercial software package IDA-ICE program is used for calculation of fossil plant heating system, however, there is no inbuilt simulation model for heat pumps in IDA-ICE, different COP (coefficient of performance) curves of the earlier studies of heat pumps are taken into account for the evaluation of the heat pump input and output energy. The outcome of the energy and exergy flow analysis at two different dead-state temperatures revealed that the ground source heat pumps with ambient reference have better performance against all ground reference systems as well as fossil plant (conventional system) and air source heat pumps with ambient reference.  相似文献

The present study highlights the exergetic performance characteristics of an underground air tunnel for greenhouse cooling with a 47 m horizontal, 56 cm nominal diameter U-bend buried galvanized ground heat exchanger. This system was designed and installed in the Solar Energy Institute, Ege University, Izmir, Turkey. Underground air tunnel systems, also known as earth-to-air heat exchangers, are recognized to be outstanding heating, cooling and air heating systems. On the other hand, they have not been used yet in the Turkish market. Greenhouses also have important economical potential in Turkey’s agricultural sector. Greenhouses should be cooled during the summer or hot days. In order to establish optimum growth conditions in greenhouses, renewable energy sources should be utilized as much as possible. It is expected that effective use of underground air tunnels with a suitable technology in the modern greenhouses will play a leading role in Turkey in the foreseeable future. The exergy transports between the components and the destructions in each of the components of the system are determined for the average measured parameters obtained from the experimental results. Exergetic efficiencies of the system components are determined in an attempt to assess their individual performances and the potential for improvements is also presented. The daily maximum cooling coefficient of performances (COP) values for the system are also obtained to be 15.8. The total average COP in the experimental period is found to be 10.09. The system COP was calculated based on the amount of cooling produced by the air tunnel and the amount of power required to move the air through the tunnel, while the exergetic efficiency of the air tunnel is found to be in a range among 57.8–63.2%. The overall exergy efficiency value for the system on a product/fuel basis is found to be 60.7%.  相似文献

The development of efficient long-term heat storage systems could significantly increase the use of solar thermal energy for building heating. Among the different heat storage technologies, the absorption heat storage system seems promising for this application. To analyze the potential of this technology, a numerical model based on mass, species, energy, and exergy balances has been developed. The evolution over time of the storage imposes a transient approach. Simulations were performed considering temperature conditions close to those of a storage system used for space heating coupled to solar thermal collectors (as the heat source), with ground source heat exchangers (as the cold source). The transient behavior of the system was analyzed in both the charging and discharging phases. This analysis highlights the lowering of energetic and exergetic performance during both phases, and these phenomena are discussed. The thermal efficiency and the energy storage density of the system were determined, equal to 48.4 % and 263 MJ/m3, respectively. The exergetic efficiency is equal to 15.0 %, and the exergy destruction rate is 85.8 %. The key elements in terms of exergy destruction are the solution storage tank, the generator, and the absorber. The impact of using a solution heat exchanger (SHX) was studied. The risk of the solution crystallizing in the SHX was taken into account. With a SHX, the thermal efficiency of the system can reach 75 %, its storage density was 331 MJ/m3, and its exergetic efficiency and exergy destruction rate was 23.2 and 77.3 %, respectively.  相似文献

Energy and exergy analysis has been conducted to investigate the thermodynamic–electrochemical characteristics of hydrogen production by a solid oxide steam electrolyzer (SOSE) plant. All overpotentials involved in the SOSE cell have been included in the thermodynamic model. The waste heat in the gas stream of the SOSE outlet is recovered to preheat the H2O stream by a heat exchanger. The heat production by the SOSE cell due to irreversible losses has been investigated and compared with the SOSE cell's thermal energy demand. It is found that the SOSE cell normally operates in an endothermic mode at a high temperature while it is more likely to operate in an exothermic mode at a low temperature as the heat production due to overpotentials exceeds the thermal energy demand. A diagram of energy and exergy flows in the SOSE plant helps to identify the sources and quantify the energy and exergy losses. The exergy analysis reveals that the SOSE cell is the major source of exergy destruction. The energy analysis shows that the energy loss is mainly caused by inefficiency of the heat exchangers. The effects of some important operating parameters, such as temperature, current density, and H2O flow rate, on the plant efficiency have been studied. Optimization of these parameters can achieve maximum energy and exergy efficiencies. The findings show that the difference between energy efficiency and exergy efficiency is small as the high-temperature thermal energy input is only a small fraction of the total energy input. In addition, the high-temperature waste heat is of high quality and can be recovered. In contrast, for a low-temperature electrolysis plant, the difference between the energy and exergy efficiencies is more apparent because considerable amount of low-temperature waste heat contains little exergy and cannot be recovered effectively. This study provides a better understanding of the energy and exergy flows in SOSE hydrogen production and demonstrates the importance of exergy analysis for identifying and quantifying the exergy destruction. The findings of the present study can further be applied to perform process optimization to maximize the cost-effectiveness of SOSE hydrogen production.  相似文献

Absorption thermal systems are attractive for using waste heat energy from industrial processes and renewable energy such as geothermal energy, solar energy, etc. The Absorption Heat Transformer (AHT) is a promising system for recovering low-level waste heat. The thermal processes in the absorption system release a large amount of heat to the environment. This heat is evolved considerably at temperature, the ambient temperature results in a major irreversible loss in the absorption system components. Exergy analysis emphasises that both losses and irreversibility have an impact on system performance. Therefore, evaluating of the AHT in exergy basis is a much more suitable approach. In this study, a mathematical model of AHTs operating with the aqua/ammonia was developed to simulate the performance of these systems coupled to a solar pond in order to increase the temperature of the useful heat produced by solar ponds. A heat source at temperatures not higher than 100 °C was used to simulate the heat input to an AHT from a solar pond. In this paper, exergy analysis of the AHT were performed and effects of exergy losses of the system components on performance of the AHT used to increase solar pond’s temperature were investigated. The maximum upgrading of solar pond’s temperature by the AHT, is obtained at 51.5 °C and gross temperature lift at 93.5 °C with coefficients of performance of about 0.4. The maximum temperature of the useful heat produced by the AHT was ˜150 °C. As a result, determining of exergy losses for the system components show that the absorber and the generator need to be improved thermally. If the exergy losses are reduced, use of the AHT to increase the temperature of the heat used from solar ponds will be more feasable.  相似文献

Thermoelectric (TE) modules are possible reversible pre‐cooling and pre‐heating devices for ventilation air in buildings. In this study, the opportunity of direct coupling of TE modules with photovoltaic (PV) cells is considered. This coupling is evaluated through a numerical simulation depending on the meteorological conditions of Chambéry, Alpine region in France, and on the cooling or heating use of the TE modules, through annual energy and exergy efficiencies. For the considered conditions, TE module performances are of the same order as the ones of the vapour compression heat pumps, with a TE coefficient of performance higher than 2 for low values of input DC current. The PV–TE coupling efficiency varies between 0.096 and 0.23 over the year, with an average value of 0.157. Evolutions of the exergy effectiveness of PV and TE elements follow the same trends as the corresponding energy efficiencies but with steeper variations for the coupling exergy yield that varies between 0.004 and 0.014, with an annual average value of 0.010. The direct PV–TE coupling does not seem to be a sustainable option for the summer cooling purpose particularly. A case study with indirect coupling under a warm climate is considered and shows that the use of TE devices could be efficient in housing to ensure summer thermal comfort, but the corresponding necessary PV area would induce a high investment. In this paper, through introducing an external heat source to the conventional humid air turbine (HAT) cycle, we have studied the performances of the improved humid air gas turbine cycle mainly by exergy analysis method. In order to attain the performance of the humid air gas turbine with external heat source, we compare it with the conventional HAT cycle in detail with different factors such as the pressure ratio, turbine inlet temperature (TIT) and the external circulating water mass flow. The results showed that the specific work of the new system and the humidity ratio of saturator are all increased in some degree. For example, in the same pressure ratio and TIT, when the ratio of the external circulating water mass flow rate with that of the internal water is 0.2, the specific work increases more than 15.2 kJ kg−1a, and the humidity raises at least 2.0 percent points. By introducing the external circulating water into the system, though thermal efficiency of the new HAT cycle is lower than that of the conventional HAT cycle, the exergy efficiency exhibits different results. Generally, when the pressure ratio is over 8, the exergy efficiency for the proposed HAT cycle is higher than the conventional HAT cycle; while less than 8, whether or not the exergy efficiency increases will mainly depend on TIT. In addition, the exergy destructions of components in systems were investigated. Through the comparison of the new system with the conventional HAT cycle, it was found that the exergy loss proportion in combustion declines for the new system, and the proportion of exhaust loss increases. From the viewpoint of total energy system, the HAT cycle with utilization of external heat source is a beneficial way to improve the overall performances of energy utilization. In this paper we deal with the effects of varying reference temperature on the exergy efficiencies of one- and two-stage crude oil distillation units. Such units essentially consist of the crude oil heating furnace, the distillation column and a network of heat exchangers. Since the exergy efficiency is a key parameter to see how well the system is performing, we undertake a study on the influence of the reference temperature on such efficiencies. In this regard, a commercial software package, SimSci/PRO II program is used for the calculations. The results show that increasing reference temperature decreases the exergy efficiency in both one- and two-stage crude oil distillation systems and also increases the difference between the exergy efficiencies of both systems. Therefore, the exergy losses increase in the crude oil distillation systems.  相似文献

Heating, cooling and lighting appliances in buildings account for more than one third of the world's primary energy demand and there are great potentials, which can be obtained through better applications of the energy use in buildings. In this regard, the building sector has a high potential for improving the quality match between energy supply and demand because high temperature sources are used to meet low-temperature heating needs. Low exergy (or LowEx) systems are defined as heating or cooling systems that allow the use of low valued energy, which is delivered by sustainable energy sources (i.e., through heat pumps, solar collectors, either separate or linked to waste heat, energy storage) as the energy source. These systems practically provide heating and cooling energy at a temperature close to room temperature while the so-called LowEx approach, which has been and still being successfully used in sustainable buildings design. The present study comprehensively reviews the studies conducted on LowEx heating and cooling systems for establishing the sustainable buildings. In this context, an introductory information is given first. Next, energy utilization and demand in buildings are summarized while various exergy definitions and sustainability aspects along with dead (reference) state are described. LowEx heating and cooling systems are then introduced. After that, LowEx relations used to estimate energy and exergy demand in buildings and key parameters for performance assessment and comparison purposes are presented. Finally, LowEx studies and applications conducted are reviewed while the last section concludes. The exergy efficiency values of the LowEx heating and cooling systems for buildings are obtained to range from 0.40% to 25.3% while those for greenhouses vary between 0.11% and 11.5%. The majority of analyses and assessments of LowEx systems are based on heating of buildings.  相似文献

A present key barrier for implementing large-scale hydrogen liquefaction plants is their high power consumption. The cryogenic heat exchangers are responsible for a significant part of the exergy destruction in these plants and we evaluate in this work strategies to increase their efficiency. A detailed model of a plate-fin heat exchanger is presented that incorporates the geometry of the heat exchanger, nonequilibrium ortho-para conversion and correlations to account for the pressure drop and heat transfer coefficients due to possible boiling/condensation of the refrigerant at the lowest temperatures. Based on available experimental data, a correlation for the ortho-para conversion kinetics is developed, which reproduces available experimental data with an average deviation of 2.2%. In a plate-fin heat exchanger that is used to cool the hydrogen from 47.8 K to 29.3 K with hydrogen as refrigerant, we find that the two main sources of exergy destruction are thermal gradients and ortho-para hydrogen conversion, being responsible for 69% and 29% of the exergy destruction respectively. A route to reduce the exergy destruction from the ortho-para hydrogen conversion is to use a more efficient catalyst, where we find that a doubling of the catalytic activity in comparison to ferric-oxide, as demonstrated by nickel oxide-silica catalyst, reduces the exergy destruction by 9%. A possible route to reduce the exergy destruction from thermal gradients is to employ an evaporating mixture of helium and neon at the cold-side of the heat exchanger, which reduces the exergy destruction by 7%. We find that a combination of hydrogen and helium-neon as refrigerants at high and low temperatures respectively, enables a reduction of the exergy destruction by 35%. A combination of both improved catalyst and the use of hydrogen and helium-neon as refrigerants gives the possibility to reduce the exergy destruction in the cryogenic heat exchangers by 43%. The limited efficiency of the ortho-para catalyst represents a barrier for further improvement of the efficiency.  相似文献

Energy storage systems are becoming more important for load leveling, especially for widespread use of intermittent renewable energy. Compressed air energy storage (CAES) is a promising method for energy storage, but large scale CAES is dependent on suitable underground geology. Micro-CAES with man-made air vessels is a more adaptable solution for distributed future power networks. In this paper, energy and exergy analyses of a micro-CAES system are performed, and, to improve the efficiency of the system, some innovative ideas are introduced. The results show that a micro-CAES system could be a very effective system for distributed power networks as a combination that provides energy storage, generation with various heat sources, and an air-cycle heating and cooling system, with a energy density feasible for distributed energy storage and a good efficiency due to the multipurpose system. Especially, quasi-isothermal compression and expansion concepts result in the best exergy efficiencies.  相似文献

A literature review on the application of horizontal heat pipe heat exchangers for air conditioning in tropical climates was conducted. This paper focused on the energy saving and dehumidification enhancement aspects of horizontal heat pipe heat exchangers. The related papers were grouped into three main categories and a summary of experimental and theoretical studies was made. It was revealed that although there are a number of valuable researches on the impact of heat pipe heat exchangers on the energy consumption and dehumidification enhancement of air conditioning systems in the tropics, but only limited research work on the application of horizontal configuration heat pipe heat exchangers in air conditioning systems has been carried out in these regions. Therefore, it needs more research to deepen the understanding of the benefits of this heat recovery device in the air conditioning systems. On the basis of results obtained from the reviewed research studies, the application of horizontal heat pipe heat exchangers in terms of energy saving, dehumidification enhancement and condensate drainage is recommended for the tropics.  相似文献

This paper describes a performance evaluation of the Gonen geothermal district heating system (GGDHS) in Balikesir, Turkey, based on energy and exergy analyses. The exergy destructions in the overall GGDHS are quantified and illustrated using energy and exergy flow diagrams for a reference temperature of 6 °C. The results indicate that the exergy destructions in the system occur primarily as a result of losses in the pumps, heat exchangers, and pipelines, as well as losses associated with cooled geothermal waters injected back into the reservoir. These losses amount to 14.81%, 7.11%, 1.06%, and 12.96% of the total exergy input to the GGDHS, respectively. Both energy and exergy efficiencies of the overall GGDHS were investigated to analyze and improve system performance. The efficiencies were determined to be 45.91% and 64.06%, respectively.  相似文献

The world is facing a challenge to reduce energy use to meet the environmental goals set for the future. One factor that has a great impact on the energy performance of buildings is the ventilation losses. To handle these losses, heat recovery systems with rotating heat exchanger are often implemented. These systems have been shown to recover about 60–70% of the energy in the exhaust air on an annual basis. After a heat recovery system is installed it is hard to improve the efficiency of the installed recovery system with an acceptable economic payback period. In the present paper one way to improve the energy performance of a building with this type of heat recovery system by the use of a heat pump is investigated by simulations in TrnSys.The heat pump system is arranged so that the evaporator is connected to a heat exchanger mounted in the exhaust airstream after the energy wheel, and the condenser of the heat pump is mounted so that the temperature of return water from the heating coil is increased. The simulations show that there is a possibility to increase the heat recovery rate of the air handling unit in a significant way by retrofitting a heat pump to the system.  相似文献
