Examined placement listings at 6 regional conventions, the American Psychological Association (APA) Regional Placement Bulletin, and the monthly APA Employment Bulletin (February through June, 1969). Overall, there were 1,931 unduplicated positions and 1,753 unduplicated applicants. Colleges and universities were the most frequent employment setting. Employers generally were successful in locating applicants with the desired educational requirements. For PhDs, there was a surplus of applicants for clinical/counseling positions, while there was a surplus in industrial psychology for those with less than a PhD. Reports that a tabulation of all the job openings listed in the APA Employment Bulletin for the period October 19S7 to May 1958 inclusive shows that approximately 26% have maximum age restrictions of some sort or another placed on them. Considering the efforts made by the APA to raise the standards of education and training of psychologists and its insistence on well supervised and varied experience, there should be some concern expressed over this increase in age restrictions in the employment of psychologists. No psychologist will deny the value of experience, and all will agree that education and practicum training are no substitute therefor, although a necessary foundation. One way to forcibly bring this to the attention of employers would be for the Employment Bulletin to refuse to accept any listings which put any age restrictions thereon. Three books that are intended to teach about psychotherapy (B. D. Beitman & D. Yue, (see record 1999-02454-000); N. A. Cummings & J. L. Cummings, (see record 2000-08252-000); M. O'Brien & G. Houston, (see record 2001-14109-000)) are reviewed with an intent to note points of agreement and disagreement. Although they disagree about some specifics, they agree as to the crucial role of research, theory, and experience and focus on the centrality of the therapeutic relationship. Each endorses the value of psychotherapy integration, although they approach it in different ways. In addition, each recognizes the importance of the cultural context of the treatment relationship and emphasizes the importance of knowledge and attitudes as preconditions to developing appropriate skills. On August 26, 1984, at the annual meeting of the APA in Toronto, Canada, the American Psychological Foundation announced the recipients of the Gold Medal Award (to Anne Anastasi), the Distinguished Teaching in Psychology Award (to David L. Cole), the Distinguished Teaching of Group Process Award (to Robert Freed Bales), and the National Psychology Award for Excellence in the Media (to Howard Gardner, Daniel Goleman and Roger Sergel). Presents the 4th in a series of reports on job placements listed in American Psychological Association (APA) publications and regional conventions during 1969-1972. In 1969 there were 1,931 positions for the 1,753 applicants listed, whereas in 1972 there were 812 positions for 1,662 applicants. However, the fewer listings may reflect the amount of job advertisements placed in the APA Monitor, which was not included in the present data. During the 3-yr period there was also a recession in the demand for psychologists in college, state government, hospital, and clinical settings, with a more favorable situation for industrial psychologists. The salaries associated with the positions were slightly higher in 1972 than in 1971. This study examined children’s peer information processing as an explanatory mechanism underlying the association between their insecure representations of interparental and parent–child relationships and school adjustment in a sample of 210 first graders. Consistent with emotional security theory (P. T. Davies & E. M. Cummings, 1994), results indicated that children’s insecure representations of the interparental relationship were indirectly related to their academic functioning through association with their negative information processing of stressful peer events. Insecure interparental relationships were specifically linked with negative peer information processing patterns that, in turn, predicted increases in child maladjustment over a 1-year period. These pathways remained robust after taking into account the roles of representations of parent–child relationships, trait measures of child negative affect, and socioeconomic characteristics as predictors in the analyses. A sample of 131 real estate agents was used to examine the criterion validity of the Proactive Personality Scale (T. S. Bateman & J. M. Crant, 1993). A job performance index was computed for each agent from archival records of the number of houses sold, number of listings obtained, and commission income over a 9-month period. Experience, social desirability, general mental ability, and 2 of the Big Five factors—Conscientiousness and Extraversion—were controlled for, and the Proactive Personality Scale explained an additional 8% of the variance in the objective measure of agents' job performance. These results provide additional evidence for the criterion validity of the Proactive Personality Scale and suggest that specific personality measures can have incremental validity over the Big Five factors. This study assessed relations among placement instability, inhibitory control, and caregiver-rated child behavior. The sample included 33 adopted children who had experienced placement instability, 42 adopted children who had experienced 1 stable placement, and 27 children never placed in foster care. Five- and 6-year-old children completed the day-night task, which requires children to inhibit a prepotent response, and a control task that presents similar memory demands but does not require inhibition (C. L. Gerstadt, Y. J. Hong, & A. Diamond, 1994). Adopted children who had experienced placement instability performed worse on the inhibition task than did both other groups of children, when the authors controlled for age, verbal intelligence (as measured with the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence--Revised; D. Wechsler, 1989; or the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test--Third Edition; L. M. Dunn & L. M. Dunn, 1997), and control task performance (p.05). In mid-fall 1968, the APA in cooperation with all constituent societies of the Scientific Manpower Commission surveyed graduate departments in order to learn the possible effect of the changes in draft regulations. The survey indicated that between 30 and 40% of the full-time male students were draft eligible (Boneau & Gates, 1969). In May 1969, the APA resurveyed the graduate departments in order to determine how many of the students had actually been affected. Approximately 10% of the full-time male students in PhD programs had either entered service or been issued postponed induction orders. The Scientific Manpower Commission, in addition to disseminating information on the effect of the draft, is cooperating with the Defense Department in helping the graduate student draftees in "finding military slots in which they will be able to utilize their scientific and technical training." A table indicates the percentage of American Psychological Association (APA) members among individual listings in the classified telephone directories for 20 major cities from 1947 to 1962 as follows: 1947, 18.5%; 1949, 35.5%; 1953, 46.7%; 1957, 55.8%; and 1962, 76.9%. Problems considered involve listings by persons identifying themselves as hypnotists; dianetic auditors; those who promise memory power, marriage and tranquility development, relief from sexual problems, etc.; and organizations using display advertisements despite the APA Code statement that "Display advertising is not acceptable practice." The article by R. C. Fraley and S. J. Spieker (2003) serves to remind the discipline of the possible virtues of assessing attachments on continua, a practice that has a long history in attachment research. In this commentary, the author further develops the potential contributions of this approach to assessment and advocates renewed efforts toward assessment of attachments on a single continuum of emotional security. The author contends that theory is essential as a guide for new directions in attachment assessment and that Bowlby's notions of secure base and emotional security provide the needed conceptual foundation for these further developments (E. Waters & E. M. Cummings, 2000). Moreover, challenges that have been made historically to the scoring of attachment on a security continuum are addressed. New means for continuously scoring attachment are advocated as a supplement to the primary direction of categorically assessing attachment patterns.
