Editorial.
Psychology, Public Policy, and Law focuses on the links between psychology as a science, relevant information derived from related disciplines as sciences, and public policy and law. It will publish articles that (1) critically evaluate the actual and potential contributions of psychology to public policy and legal issues, (2) assess the desirability of different public policy and legal alternatives in light of the scientific knowledge base in psychology, (3) articulate research needs that address public policy and legal issues for which there is currently insufficient theoretical and empirical knowledge, and (4) examine public policy and legal issues relating to the conduct of psychology and of related disciplines where relevant to psychology. The goals for the journal are to (1) provide a multidisciplinary forum for scholarship and interchange relevant to the mission of the journal, (2) provide a forum for the publications of comprehensive, scholarly articles that critically consider theoretical, conceptual, and doctrinal issues or that critically review the literature on topics relevant to the mission of the journal, and (3) provide a forum for the publication of comprehensive, scholarly articles that report the results of programs of research or large-scale empirical studies relevant to the mission of the journal. This particular issue provides a forum for critical discussion of the implications of using a social science amicus brief in court cases. It also demonstrates the opportunity that this journal will provide to social scientists to critically evaluate their colleagues' work when those colleagues attempt to offer their science and opinions in the legal or public policy arenas. Finally, this issue reflects the journal's desire to be a flexible forum for scholarly interchange. Rather than always publishing articles that are relatively independent of each other, the journal will also publish issues devoted to a single theme (as occurred in the first issue of this volume), and, as in the case of this issue, to interchange about one theme when it is appropriate for advancing the field. The Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition has long held the position as the premier international outlet for psychological studies of memory and cognition. The journal publishes work that is programmatic, rigorously designed and analyzed, and of great theoretical importance. The work published here is widely cited and includes some of the most influential studies in the field of cognitive psychology. The journal has a fairly rapid turnaround time, and the reviews are typically of high quality. As editor, I will work to ensure that all of these positive aspects remain in place, and to make changes that I believe will help the journal maintain its leadership position in the future. There are two main innovations that I will bring to the journal. The first is to broaden coverage to include more articles related to cognitive neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience. The second is to encourage the submission of shorter empirical articles through the initiation of a Brief Reports section. I also hope to attract some of the highest quality papers in cognitive neuroscience. I encourage my colleagues whose work includes both behavioral and neuroscientific approaches to submit their best papers to JEP: LMC. I hope to be able to continue the journal's long tradition of publishing some of the best and most influential papers in experimental psychology, while opening the door a bit wider to newer perspectives. This issue, like most law reviews and social science journals, presents articles that were unsolicited and are unrelated. The first article, using the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Foucha v. Louisiana as the vehicle, critically explores how mental illness should be defined for various legal purposes and argues the need for the application of a new constitutional principle to limit state power to involuntary hospitalize—therapeutic appropriateness. The second article then considers the U.S. Supreme Court's social science analyses in two juvenile death penalty cases, demonstrates that the Court's approach is in error, and presents an alternate analysis that the author asserts the Court should be using. The issue concludes with an article that focuses on the potential harmfulness that may result to society from censorship of sexually explicit material. When a new editorial team takes over responsibility for the important task of overseeing the production of a journal, it is critical, for both readers and those interested in publishing their scholarly work in the journal, that they clearly present their vision for the direction of the journal. Such a statement provides an opportunity for the editors to illustrate their plans for interpreting the journal's mandate in a manner that ensures continuity with previous volumes of the journal while also emphasizing areas of the mandate that may not have received the attention they deserve. This editorial is designed with these purposes in mind. In the following paragraphs, we will provide information on the structure and scope of the journal for the next four years, as well as practical information on how authors should interpret the mandate of the journal and submit their work to the journal. It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I write to you regarding several updates, new initiatives and changes with our journal. As you may have already noticed, this includes the change to a larger format, and a return to the color purple that helped define this journal from the early 1980s through the turn of the century, as well as to the original title “Psychotherapy.” The change in format will allow us to benefit from the standard American Psychological Association (APA) journal design and layout, leading to more efficient processing and arrangement within their electronic journal system. I have found this first year as the Incoming Editor of Psychotherapy to be as challenging, rewarding, and intellectually stimulating as I imagined it would be, and I remain quite excited and enthusiastic about the work ahead. It is with great pleasure that I accept and begin my tenure as the fourth editor of the International Journal of Stress Management (IJSM), following F. J. McGuigan, John Carlson, and Gary VandenBos. In this brief editorial, I provide historical context to set the path for the future of the journal and reflect on two parts of the journal’s title, “international” and “management,” that shape my vision for the journal. My envisioned future for the journal is increased focus on international and cross-cultural perspectives, as well as an interdisciplinary approach to gain a comprehensive understanding of factors that shape (a) individuals’ perceptions and experiences of stimuli (or stressors); (b) the environment’s internal and external pressures; (c) individuals’ perceptions of physiological, psychological, and behavioral health and well-being; as well as (d) individuals’ and organizations’ efforts toward prevention, coping, and management of healthy lifestyles. My ultimate goal is to see IJSM serve as the desired publication outlet of choice and primary journal for scholars and practitioners around the globe who are focused on the progress of scholarship and practice in identification and management of stress. éditorial.
The new editor of the CJEP introduces his editorial philosophy. He also discusses three issues arising from the journal’s history and scope. First, the editor sees the journal as an archival record. Second, the journal specializes in papers about brain, behavior, and cognitive science (BBCS). Finally, the able assistance of two remarkable scholars, Professors Mike Masson and Daniel Voyer, who have agreed to serve as associate editors, is acknowledged. Investigated the role that factors such as journal circulation and acceptance rate play in relation to citation impact (CTI). CTI was negatively related to acceptance rate and positively related to circulation, consistent with the construct of CTI as a measure of journal quality. CTI was highest for moderate publication lag and had substantial stability over time. Compared to non-American Psychological Association (APA) journals, APA journals had significantly higher CTI in both 1977 and 1978, higher circulation, and lower acceptance rates. CTI is probably the best single measure of journal quality currently available. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

This article, from the President of the Canadian Psychological Association, discusses the history of the journals from the Canadian Psychological Assocation. The Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science is the fourth venture in journal publication of the Canadian Psychological Association. The first was the Bulletin, a modest little quarterly which from 1940 to 1946 served the association as an embryonic scientific journal and newsletter. By 1946 the number of reports of scholarly and scientific works which it received indicated clearly that a proper scientific journal was required. Hence, in 1947 the association undertook its second, but first major journal publishing venture, the Canadian Journal of Psychology. This replaced the Bulletin. In 1950, the association established another journal to serve as a house organ and named it the Canadian Psychologist. In 1967, the association decided that if funds could be found, a journal devoted to theory, research, and application in the areas of psychology concerned with social problems would be established and called the Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science. Recorded, counted, and tabulated by source and author citations in the Journal of Counseling Psychology from 1954, 1958, 1962, 1966, and 1970. A study of the tables revealed that the dependence function of the journal (i.e., the citation of the journal itself) increased as the journal grew, sources of citations remained relatively stable over the years, and authors cited significantly changed during the same period. Two astute and creative editors have guided History of Psychology through its first 12 volumes. Michael Sokal, Founding Editor, and James Capshew have done marvelous work in making the journal must reading for scholars in the history of the human sciences. I feel honored to serve as the third editor of the journal and will continue the excellent editorial standards set for the journal. Over the course of the next year, readers will see several new features in the journal. Each year, we plan to have either one full issue or a special section devoted to a particular topic. A second new feature is Teaching the History of Psychology, with Barney Beins, a past-President of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology, serving as Section Editor. While the journal will continue to cover all eras of psychology, I will seek more submissions on the history of psychology after World War Two. For American psychology, this has been the period when it has grown most dramatically, not only in numbers, but in worldwide influence, concurrent with the growth of American political, economic, and military influence. My goal as editor is to make the journal indispensable reading and to have the kind of quality that will make it necessary to expand the number of pages we print each year. With the wholehearted support of the members of the association the Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science should soon become a sister of the Canadian Journal of Psychology of which the Canadian psychological community can be justly proud. The American Psychologist began publication 50 years ago this month as the official journal of a reorganized American Psychological Association. The journal was created as a centerpiece of the new Association, reflecting its acknowledgment of a broader role for the APA, a role that called for the advancement of psychology as a profession. The American Psychologist was intended to be the "professional " journal of the new Association, but it never really filled that responsibility. Drawing on published records and the unpublished documents of the APA Archives, this article recounts the history of this journal's founding. Editorial.
I am honored and delighted to bring you the first official issue of the newly launched Asian American Journal of Psychology (AAJP). Much in the same way that the Chinese celebrate the new year for over a week rather than a single evening, as in New Year’s Eve, the launching of this journal for the Asian American Psychological Association (AAPA) has really spread out over a year. From the signing of the contract in early 2009 to the celebration of the journal’s launch at the AAPA and American Psychological Association (APA) conventions in Toronto in August 2009, we have now come to another benchmark of the journal, which is the publication of the first official issue. Whereas we were able to produce a sample issue (Leong, 2009) from previously published articles on Asian Americans in APA journals in August 2009, the articles in this current issue mark the official beginning of new studies, new perspectives, and new contributions to the field. The journal will publish empirical, theoretical, methodological, and practice-oriented articles covering topics relevant to Asian American individuals and communities, including prevention, intervention, training, and social justice. Particular consideration is given to empirical articles using quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methodology. For the journal, Asian Americans are broadly defined as people of Asian and Pacific Islander ancestry in the United States and Canada.
