The paper deals with the evaluation of power generated by variable and constant frequency offshore wind farms connected to a single large power converter. A methodology to analyze different wind speed scenarios and system electrical frequencies is presented and applied to a case study, where it is shown that he variable frequency wind farm concept (VF) with a single power converter obtains 92% of the total available power, obtained with individual power converters in each wind turbine (PC). The PC scheme needs multiple power converters implying drawbacks in terms of cost, maintenance and reliability. The VF scheme is also compared to a constant frequency scheme CF, and it is shown that a significant power increase of more than 20% can be obtained with VF. The case study considers a wind farm composed of four wind turbines based on synchronous generators.  相似文献

A serial AC?DC integrated load flow algorithm for variable speed offshore wind farms is proposed. It divides the electrical system of a wind farm into several local networks, and different load flow methods are used for these local networks sequentially. This method is fast, more accurate, and many factors such as the different wind farm configurations, the control of wind turbines and the power losses of pulse width modulation converters are considered. The DC/DC converter model is proposed and integrated into load flow algorithm by modifying the Jacobian matrix. Two iterative methods are proposed and integrated into the load flow algorithm: one takes into account the control strategy of converters and the other considers the power losses of converters. In addition, different types of variable speed wind turbine systems with different control methods are investigated. Finally, the method is demonstrated using an 80-MW offshore wind farm.  相似文献

This paper presents a data‐driven adaptive scheme to adjust the control settings of each wind turbine in a wind farm such that an increase in the total power production of the wind farm is achieved. This is carried out by taking into account the interaction between the turbines through wake effects. The optimization scheme is designed in such a way that it yields fast convergence so that it can adapt to changing wind conditions quickly. The scheme has a distributed architecture in which each wind turbine adapts its control settings through gradient‐based optimization, using information that it receives from neighbouring turbines. The novel control method is tested in a simulation of the Princess Amalia Wind Park. It is shown that the distributed gradient‐based approach performs the optimization in a more time‐efficient manner compared with an existing data‐driven wind farm power optimization method that uses a game theoretic approach. Fault ride through of fully rated converter wind turbines in an offshore wind farm connected to onshore network via either high voltage AC (HVAC) or high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission is described. Control of the generators and the grid side converters is shown using vector control techniques. A de-loading scheme was used to protect the wind turbine DC link capacitors from over voltage. How de-loading of each generator aids the fault ride through of the wind farm connected through HVAC transmission is demonstrated. The voltage recovery of the AC network during the fault was enhanced by increasing the reactive power current of the wind turbine grid side converter. A practical fault ride through protection scheme for a wind farm connected through an HVDC link is to employ a chopper circuit on the HVDC link. Two alternatives to this approach are also discussed. The first involves de-loading the wind farm on detection of the fault, which requires communication of the fault condition to each wind turbine of the wind farm. The second scheme avoids this complex communication requirement by transferring the fault condition via control of the HVDC link to the offshore converter. The fault performances of the three schemes are simulated and the results were used to assess their respective capabilities.  相似文献

Power production of an onshore wind farm is investigated through supervisory control and data acquisition data, while the wind field is monitored through scanning light detection and ranging measurements and meteorological data acquired from a met‐tower located in proximity to the turbine array. The power production of each turbine is analysed as functions of the operating region of the power curve, wind direction and atmospheric stability. Five different methods are used to estimate the potential wind power as a function of time, enabling an estimation of power losses connected with wake interactions. The most robust method from a statistical standpoint is that based on the evaluation of a reference wind velocity at hub height and experimental mean power curves calculated for each turbine and different atmospheric stability regimes. The synergistic analysis of these various datasets shows that power losses are significant for wind velocities higher than cut‐in wind speed and lower than rated wind speed of the turbines. Furthermore, power losses are larger under stable atmospheric conditions than for convective regimes, which is a consequence of the stability‐driven variability in wake evolution. Light detection and ranging measurements confirm that wind turbine wakes recover faster under convective regimes, thus alleviating detrimental effects due to wake interactions. For the wind farm under examination, power loss due to wake shadowing effects is estimated to be about 4% and 2% of the total power production when operating under stable and convective conditions, respectively. However, cases with power losses about 60‐80% of the potential power are systematically observed for specific wind turbines and wind directions. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The maintenance of wind farms is one of the major factors affecting their profitability. During preventive maintenance, the shutdown of wind turbines causes downtime energy losses. The selection of when and which turbines to maintain can significantly impact the overall downtime energy loss. This paper leverages a wind farm power generation model to calculate downtime energy losses during preventive maintenance for an offshore wind farm. Wake effects are considered to accurately evaluate power output under specific wind conditions. In addition to wind speed and direction, the influence of wake effects is an important factor in selecting time windows for maintenance. To minimize the overall downtime energy loss of an offshore wind farm caused by preventive maintenance, a mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problem is formulated and solved by the genetic algorithm, which can select the optimal maintenance time windows of each turbine. Weather conditions are imposed as constraints to ensure the safety of maintenance personnel and transportation. Using the climatic data of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the schedule of preventive maintenance is optimized for a simulated utility-scale offshore wind farm. The optimized schedule not only reduces the annual downtime energy loss by selecting the maintenance dates when wind speed is low but also decreases the overall influence of wake effects within the farm. The portion of downtime energy loss reduced due to consideration of wake effects each year is up to approximately 0.2% of the annual wind farm energy generation across the case studies—with other stated opportunities for further profitability improvements.  相似文献

Aerodynamic wake interaction between commercial scale wind turbines can be a significant source of power losses and increased fatigue loads across a wind farm. Significant research has been dedicated to the study of wind turbine wakes and wake model development. This paper profiles influential wake regions for an onshore wind farm using 6 months of recorded SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) data. An average wind velocity deficit of over 30% was observed corresponding to power coefficient losses of 0.2 in the wake region. Wind speed fluctuations are also quantified for an array of turbines, inferring an increase in turbulence within the wake region. A study of yaw data within the array showed turbine nacelle misalignment under a range of downstream wake angles, indicating a characteristic of wind turbine behaviour not generally considered in wake studies. The turbines yaw independently in order to capture the increased wind speeds present due to the lateral influx of turbulent wind, contrary to many experimental and simulation methods found in the literature. Improvements are suggested for wind farm control strategies that may improve farm‐wide power output. Additionally, possible causes for wind farm wake model overestimation of wake losses are proposed.Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper is based on continuous measurements of voltages and currents from three wind farms for a period of 1 year, and the focus is on voltage dips. The purpose is to get an overview of the characteristics and rate of voltage dips, which occur in the wind farms and to study the wind turbine responses to voltage dips. In each of the wind farms there is one measurement point at a single wind turbine and one for measuring the contribution from the whole wind farm. Different wind turbine technologies are used in the three wind farms; fixed speed turbines with directly connected induction generators in wind farm 1 and variable speed turbines with power electronics converters and synchronous generators in wind farms 2 and 3. Voltage dips are evaluated according to the standard EN 50160, by considering the durations and residual voltages of the positive sequence component voltage dips. Some examples of voltage dip events with corresponding responses in active and reactive power are shown and discussed with a view to the different technologies. In this study, we propose the use of model‐based receding horizon control to enable a wind farm to provide secondary frequency regulation for a power grid. The controller is built by first proposing a time‐varying one‐dimensional wake model, which is validated against large eddy simulations of a wind farm at startup. This wake model is then used as a plant model for a closed‐loop receding horizon controller that uses wind speed measurements at each turbine as feedback. The control method is tested in large eddy simulations with actuator disk wind turbine models representing an 84‐turbine wind farm that aims to track sample frequency regulation reference signals spanning 40 min time intervals. This type of control generally requires wind turbines to reduce their power set points or curtail wind power output (derate the power output) by the same amount as the maximum upward variation in power level required by the reference signal. However, our control approach provides good tracking performance in the test system considered with only a 4% derate for a regulation signal with an 8% maximum upward variation. This performance improvement has the potential to reduce the opportunity cost associated with lost revenue in the bulk power market that is typically associated with providing frequency regulation services. Turbulence characteristics of the wind farm inflow have a significant impact on the energy production and the lifetime of a wind farm. The common approach is to use the meteorological mast measurements to estimate the turbulence intensity (TI) but they are not always available and the turbulence varies over the extent of the wind farm. This paper describes a method to estimate the TI at individual turbine locations by using the rotor effective wind speed calculated via high frequency turbine data. The method is applied to Lillgrund and Horns Rev-I offshore wind farms and the results are compared with TI derived from the meteorological mast, nacelle mounted anemometer on the turbines and estimation based on the standard deviation of power. The results show that the proposed TI estimation method is in the best agreement with the meteorological mast. Therefore, the rotor effective wind speed is shown to be applicable for the TI assessment in real-time wind farm calculations under different operational conditions. Furthermore, the TI in the wake is seen to follow the same trend with the estimated wake deficit which enables to quantify the turbulence in terms of the wake loss locally inside the wind farm.  相似文献

A tidal turbine is a device converting hydrodynamic power into electrical power. Lately, more and more projects have been developed in order to optimize the productivity of this kind of energy. In such research with industrial interest, under the impact of the wake effect on the output power, the analysis of a tidal farm layout is regarded as the first priority. Simple approaches such as those developed for wind farms could be used in tidal turbine arrangement optimization. These methodologies can be improved by taking into account the turbulence in tidal farms and tidal turbines' mechanical characteristics. The goal of this work is to propose a predictive analytical model to estimate the tidal speed in the far wake of tidal turbines with small diameter to depth ratio (20% here). It is a first step prior to integrate the wake model in a tidal farm layout optimization algorithm. The wake model development is achieved reanalyzing the far wake's equations used in wind farm applications. A turbine represented by an Actuator Disc (AD) in conjunction with a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) numerical model is used as a reference for this purpose. The CFD-AD model has been validated with experimental results from literature. The novelty of the present work consists in expressing the far wake's radius expansion as a function of the ambient turbulence and the thrust coefficient. The proposed equation is used in conjunction with the Jensen's model in a manner that the velocities downstream a tidal turbine can be estimated. The velocity distribution in the far wake of a single turbine obtained by the proposed model is in good agreement with the CFD numerical model. As a matter of fact, the model provides satisfactory accuracy in the cases of two parks: one with five aligned turbines and one with ten staggered turbines.  相似文献

In this study, a particle filtering approach is used to get an optimized layout of a wind farm that has the minimum wake effects and maximum power generation. There are two main constraints of the problem, which are the wind farm boundary and the distance of any two turbines to each other. The constraints and wake effects of the wind turbines are integrated to the solution methodology. Particle filtering is a new approach and used to optimize the layout model of the problem with three different cases of the wind speed and its direction distribution of the windy site. Results show that the particle filtering approach can compete with ant colony and evolutionary strategy algorithms available in the literature.  相似文献

The dynamics of wind turbine behavior are complex and a critical area of study for the wind industry. Identification of factors that cause changes in turbine performance can sometimes prove to be challenging, whereas other times, it can be intuitive. The quantification of the effect that these factors have is valuable for making improvements to both power performance and turbine health. In commercial farms, large quantities of meteorological and performance data are commonly collected to monitor daily operations. These data can also be used to analyze the relationship between each parameter in order to better understand the interactions that occur and the information contained within these signals. In this global sensitivity analysis, a neural network is used to model select wind turbine supervisory control and data acquisition system parameters for an array of turbines from a commercial wind farm that exhibit signs of wake interaction. An extended Fourier amplitude sensitivity test is then performed for 2 years of 10‐min averaged data. The study examines the primary and combined sensitivities of power output to each selected parameter for two turbines in the array. The primary sensitivities correspond to single parameter interactions, whereas combined sensitivities account for interactions between multiple parameters simultaneously. Highly influential parameters such as wind speed and rotor rotation frequency produce expected results; the extended Fourier amplitude sensitivity test method proved effective at quantifying the sensitivity of a wide range of more subtle inputs. These include blade pitch, yaw position, main bearing and ambient temperatures as well as wind speed and yaw position standard deviation. The technique holds promise for application in full‐scale wake studies where it might be used to determine the benefits of emerging power optimization strategies such as active wake management. The field of structural health monitoring can also benefit from this method. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An experimental investigation was conducted for a better understanding of the wake interferences among wind turbines sited in wind farms with different turbine layout designs. Two different types of inflows were generated in an atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel to simulate the different incoming surface winds over typical onshore and offshore wind farms. In addition to quantifying the power outputs and dynamic wind loads acting on the model turbines, the characteristics of the wake flows inside the wind farms were also examined quantitatively. After adding turbines staggered between the first 2 rows of an aligned wind farm to increase the turbine number density in the wind farm, the added staggered turbines did not show a significant effect on the aeromechanical performance of the downstream turbines for the offshore case. However, for the onshore case, while the upstream staggered turbines have a beneficial effect on the power outputs of the downstream turbines, the fatigue loads acting on the downstream turbines were also found to increase considerably due to the wake effects induced by the upstream turbines. With the same turbine number density and same inflow characteristics, the wind turbines were found to be able to generate much more power when they are arranged in a staggered layout than those in an aligned layout. In addition, the characteristics of the dynamic wind loads acting on the wind turbines sited in the aligned layout, including the fluctuation amplitudes and power spectrum, were found to be significantly different from those with staggered layout.  相似文献

Frequent failures of power converters affect the availability of wind turbines and cause considerable maintenance costs. To enhance the reliability of power converters in wind turbines, the prevailing causes and modes of failures have to be identified. This publication contributes to root-cause analysis of the power-converter failures in wind turbines from a statistical point of view. For this purpose, the failure behavior of power-converters is modeled via lifetime models as well as repairable-system models. By means of regression models, covariates are incorporated, including both design-related and site-specific covariates. The analysis is based on a worldwide extensive field-data collection covering more than 9000 turbines, including different turbine designs, sites, and ages. The results obtained by means of the applied regression models indicate that the location of the power converter within the turbine, the cooling system, the converter rated power, the DC-link voltage, the IGBT-module manufacturer, and the commissioning date of the turbine as design-related covariates have a significant effect on the phase-module failure behavior and with that on converter reliability. Among the site-specific covariates, the analysis results confirm humidity as a likely significant driver of failures.  相似文献

Wake losses are a critical consideration in wind farm design. The ability to steer and deform wakes can result in increased wind farm power density and reduced energy costs and can be used to optimize wind farm designs. This study investigates the wake deflection of a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) experimentally, emphasizing the effect of different load distributions on the wake convection and mixing. A trailing vortex system responsible for the wake topology is hypothesized based on a simplified vorticity equation that describes the relationship between load distribution and its vortex generation; the proposed vorticity system and the resulting wake topology are experimentally validated in the wind tunnel via stereoscopic particle image velocimetry measurements of the flow field at several wake cross-sections. Variations in load distribution are accomplished by a set of fixed blade pitches. The experimental results not only validate the predicted vorticity system but also highlight the critical role of the streamwise vorticity component in the deflection and deformation of the wake, thus affecting the momentum and energy recoveries. The evaluation of the various loading cases demonstrates the significant effect of the wake deflection on the wind power available to a downwind turbine, even when the distance between the two turbines is only three diameters.  相似文献
